  1. Hydrated lime, the white powder (calcium hydroxide), not agricultural lime, the gray pellets (calcium carbonate). At least that's what my grandparents provided a bucket of in their outhouse. That and wasps. And a Sears catalog.
  2. My first thought was, "Kim Jong Un is the #3 son? He should be named Kim Jong Trois!"
  3. Watching Samurai helped me to better understand the plot and some of the characters in Magnificent Seven. All in all, Samurai was a much better movie. Toshiro Mifune was brilliant. Bergman also made some stunning films - Virgin Spring and The Seventh Seal come to mind. Odd little stories with great scenery and photography. TCM is a good place to catch the old classics from Kurosawa, Bergman and Eisenstein, not to mention John Ford.
  4. Calcium carbide and water react to make acetylene gas. Any old guy from WV knows this.

    opinion on a 44mag

Shoot a grizzly center mass and a pissed-off bear will kill you. Save the last round for yourself.
  6. I like their magazine design because it's a lot easier to unload the tube than it is with a side gate.
  7. Fear of a Lonely Planet <== Link "Escape into fantasies of regional and global orders, global government" This guy makes a lot of sense. I think he's on to something.
  8. I never had any luck with peanut butter, but bacon rind tied on the trigger with frayed yarn is deadly. Even if they miss the rind, they get their teeth tangled in the yarn (so goes the theory) and trip the skull-splitter. I won't live with mice. Lizards are a different story -- they eat bugs I don't like. In Michigan, I used to leave food in the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket and a stick leaning against the rim of the bucket. In an unheated garage, I used to collect a few mouse-sicles every winter. Jack Russell terriers are deadly against mice, but not in the house. They'll keep all critters out of your yard. They've been known to attack a bear. Unsuccessfully.
  9. The Post Office announced $3 Billion in cuts for next year. They're expecting a $14 Billion deficit next year. Kind of like bailing out the Titanic with a shot glass. The Gov won't let them fail -- they'll eventually get money from the Gov (as if they aren't now) and we'll foot the bill, one way or another.
  10. I don't pocket carry in a vehicle -- I tuck the gun & holster between the seat and console.
  11. Isn't there a pill for this?
  12. Haven't used them, but Garmin makes the best GPS's, IMHO. The radio should give you fairly reliable communications over a couple of miles line-of-sight. If you have a hill between stations they won't work so well. Cell phones will work better if you can get a signal. You might be less-than-impressed with the performance of the radio, but the GPS should be a dandy.
  13. Kramer horsehide pocket holster, strong side front pocket. I don't have any problem with dress/casual pants or jeans, as long as I wear Wranglers. When weather allows me to conceal with an IWB/OWB holster, I carry a bigger gun - K frame or SIG. If you're having trouble with jeans, you might want to change brands or fit.
  14. I quit reading Guns and Ammo.
  15. WBIR Knoxville has done the same thing at their website. Since I usually can't get into Facebook, I usually can't comment on the crap they publish. They win, for now.
  16. I count 4 acts of negligence: 1. victim didn't wear orange, 2, grandfather didn't wear orange, 3. grandfather didn't make victim wear orange, 4. shooter didn't identify his target. There were no accidents involved - it was all assignable negligence. I wonder if the kid took the hunter safety course?
  17. Come to think of it, I have one in cowhide also. I much prefer the horsehide. I waited a couple of weeks for mine, but that was years ago.
  18. I have one in horsehide for a semi-auto. It's a fine, high quality holster.
  19. It was a strange Thanksgiving - just me and my wife. We've always had a kid or two and, lately, grandchild at the table but not this year. Family is spread out all over - Texas, Michigan, Ontario, West Virginia, Virginia. We're the only ones sane enough to live in Tennessee. In retrospect, it didn't make much sense to spend that much time preparing a meal for two people. But it was good!
  20. I believe that some felonies could have an expiration date, as a first step. And I believe that those crimes, non-violent in nature, should never have been felonies in the first place. I have a friend who is a combat veteran marine, Korean War, former competitive pistol shooter, who cannot own a firearm because of an IRS felony conviction. A tax dispute! Which, of course, the IRS won, as they do 99.99% of the time. We need some laws revamped, or we'll have half the population in jail with the other half guarding them. We could use LESS government.
  21. We're going down to the local China-mart to observe, not participate. The traffic's never bad around here. Wouldn't think of going out in Nashville/Knoxville/Memphis/Chattanooga.
  22. I like the dark theme - it's easy on the eyes. Looking good overall - snazzy!
  23. I see them every week around here. But then, we have chupacabras too. Common in the seedy areas.
