  1. Still, it's not good planning to rely on doing something you've never done to save yourself. The provision in the FCC regs was not designed to relieve people from the obligation to educate themselves or obtain licenses, but to prevent them from being prosecuted if the SHTF and they were lucky. That's not a survival plan.
  2. Seriously though, will you have the knowledge to set up and effectively use an HF station? You don't even have a license yet.
  3. If your VHF/UHF rig isn't within sight of a repeater, it won't do you much good out there in the boonies. You can expect simplex comms to work out to about 10 miles or so, but that may not get you any assistance in case of an emergency. Not saying that amateur radio isn't a good idea for you, just saying that it has it's limitations too. HF will get you out maybe 2-300 miles on 75 meters at night and in the early morning. 40 meters is fairly reliable out to 500 miles until early afternoon and you can work DX on it at night. I'd look into a PLB for the best protection. EMERGENCY BEACONS
  4. Detroit.
  5. I carried all of this until my pants started falling down in public. Now it's just the knife and a snubbie.
  6. I carry a Leatherman Wave around the house and a Surge at work. Can't do without the pliers!
  7. Techs can operate phone from 28.300 to 28.500 Mhz, and CW from 28.000 to 28.300.
  8. Darn, I wanted to be first. I use crock sticks for light sharpening and a Lansky for heavy work. I never had much luck with stones as I can't maintain the proper angle. I'm a fan of Kershaw and Case knives, am usually carrying one or the other, or both.
  9. We have an ICOM 2m/440 unit (207?) in the car and an ICOM 706 (HF/VHF/UHF) in my truck, both with remotely mounted control heads. ICOM, Yaesu and Kenwood all make good equipment, Alinco and ADI less so, IMHO.
  10. It's all BS. The spill can't affect oil production unless the government lets it affect production, and I think that's what they want. You can't drill for oil without spills any more than you can mine coal without cave-ins. It's part of the process, but the end result is worth it. The left is against drilling for oil, mining coal, and building nuclear plants. What's left? Solar panels and windmills are not reliable sources of energy. Oil and coal ARE solar power. Let California freeze in the dark - I want electricity.
  11. I lift my glass of Scotch to your Grand-dad -- 'Til you meet again!
  12. I keep #1 buck in my HD shotgun for adequate but not excessive penetration. Other people seem to use anything from birdshot to slugs for reasons I don't understand.
  13. We came from a swamp. My rifle was a GM M16A1, S/N 3155417. Army burned that into my brain 38 years ago. Thanks for your service and SEMPER FI!
  14. Ed's Red is also highly recommended by some, but I haven't tried it. Hoppe's should do nicely.

    Breaking News

I don't know . . . pickled eggs and beer are pretty nasty, speaking from personal experience.
  16. It got hairy here in the middle of the night. Darndest lightning show I've ever seen. We lost power and may have had a small tornado pass just north of us.
  17. I don't do pagan religions.
  18. Got one yesterday from about a 6 inch range. He was hovering near the railing and I got behind him. DRT. I need to load more rounds -- I made a dozen to start with and I'm down to one now. I think I'll try walnut tumbling media instead of grits the next time - try to get a little more weight/energy in the charge.
  19. PS - I didn't use a Smith - used my 40 year old Taurus clone of a S&W Model 10. He's just as dead, but I didn't get $500 worth of satisfaction.
  20. Got one today! It took two rounds of grits and a size 11 Sperry Topsider to finish him off. Film at 11 . . . .
  21. Mebbe somebody saw me on my deck shooting bees with a .38?
  22. IBTL Where'd the funny emoticons go? :eating popcorn: Use your imagination.
  23. Why would I use a tennis racket, or a wiffle bat or anything else when I have a Smith & Wesson? I don't want to kill them with a dollar wiffle bat -- I want to kill them with a $500 Smith. It's more elegant that way.
  24. Care to share it with us?
