  1. Thank you Garufa. That is exactly what I had in mind. It looks to be a tad more pricy than the one I looked at on Brownell's webpage but alot nicer.
  2. Hello everyone. My wife/CFO just called to let me know that my $30.00 check cleared today. Should I buy one of the BATFE approved bound books available from Brownell's or download and print the pages available on the web? I am all for saving some cash but I also like the idea of a leather covered professional looking book. I figure that I will likely save enough in the next year or so to cover the cost of a book. Haas anyone ordered one and liked the format? I am working on approval from the above mentioned CFO to allow me to order one of each of the firearms mentioned in this thread. I will post results after the Christmas board meeting. (any sugestions on a good gift)
  3. The CMP M1 rifles look very interesting but as mentioned you can buy them without the C&R. A big reason I started this thread was to encurage myself to apply for the C&R FFL and get involved in collecting older rifles rather than buying the same new guns that everyone else has to hunt and shoot with. Untill researching the C&R I would have never thought of using it simply for discounts but it looks to me that ammo discounts will save me more than the discounts on guns. I will likely have an M1 carbine at some point and the 30-06 is by far my favorite deer caliber. Here in my corner of Northeast TN anything over 150 yards is rare and truthfully most shots are taken under 80 yards. An M1 could be a great deer rifle even with open sights. If I had a budget of $2,000 per month to blow on guns, ammo, and accessories I would still want more.
  4. I will hunt in the morning, eat at the in-laws, eat at my parents, then get ready to hunt the rest of the weekend. This is the first time in many years that I will not be traveling for Thanksgiving.
  5. Well I finally got around to dropping the paperwork into the mail today. I have decided to order a Mauser first, then the SKS, and finally a fancy 91/30 unless the supply changes in the next few months. Do You guys know about how often the suppliers rotate their model selections? I understand that availability changes all the time but I assume that they would import new and exciting surplus stashed guns on a biannual basis or so. Please excuse my bad spelling.
  6. Well add me to the list brothers & fellows. #547 Past Master O.E.S.#414 Scottish Rite 32rd degree Valley of Knoxville
  7. I use an NRA holster shirt when riding the mountains and spirited rides with no destinations other than fuel stops. It keeps my gun dry and well hidden under my jacket. I have a beaded key chain on my zipper so it opperates better in gloves. If I am going to dinner or commuting I carry IWB as always. Sometimes I just put my 45 in a belt holster with no cover, printing or even open carry is not an issue to me especially on a bike. I guess that everyone is looking at my bikes or I'm going to fast for anyone to see a gun because I have never had any comments.
  8. TGO must be loaded with us.... But then again we are everywhere.
  9. Well I received the application today and have decided to fill it out and send it on back to the ATF. I hope to have everything in order to buy March in order to buy my first surplus rifle for my birthday.
  10. This brings back memories. My dad bought me a nickel HP-22 for my 18th birthday as my first pistol. In his defence he is not a gun guy. After about 300 rounds of ammo with maybe 70% reliablity a 1/4 inch section of the slide under the ejection port flew off over my sholder. The only reason I bothered sending it in for a replacement is because it was a gift from my dad. I hate to knock any american made product but please stay away from all Phoenix Arms product.

    AR Pistol

The closest thing to an AR pistol I have had was a Kel-Tec PLR-16. I bought it thanking it would be better than an AR-15 because it was a pistol. That was one of the two guns I have ever sold. I tried about 8 types of ammo and none would feed through the 6 types of magazines I tried. Like others have stated, there is no real use for a combat rifle cut down into a pistol package. What looks like the best of both worlds is not any good at anything.
  13. For that price I could sign up for two! I hope to find a friend with one or more of the rifles you all have listed and get a bit of trigger time over the next few months. As a few here have stated I have plenty of time to shop around.
  14. Thanks for the info folks. I have decided that any pistol I would buy with the C&R ffl will be in 9x18 as the 9x19 is not a round I use in my modern pistols. I like the idea of the SKS and the Mosin rifles and odds are that I will own both. I just want to start off on the right foot and stay motivated to buy older guns for investment reasons. Please keep the input coming.
  15. O.K. I am new here and new to the C&R rifle options. However, I am not new to modern firearms at all. I did order my C&R application this week but I do not know if I will fill it out and send it back yet. I do understand that C&R guns are typically safe queens rather than weekend toys. I want to get into older rifles for long-term investment values but I would like to be able to use them for there intended purpose and shoot them at least some. In ansuering the following questions please consider ammo availability and cost as well as initial cost of the rifle. My questions: 1. What is the best choice for a C&R rifle that will be shot semi-frequently at the range? 2. Where is the best place to buy your chosen rifle and ammo for it? 3. What are some known issues that I should be aware of when shopping? Thank you for your help and comments.
  16. From my rimfire rifle experiance my vote almost always goes to Marlin. I have two model 60 .22 caliber rifles and a .22 WMR bolt action. The three Ruger 10-22's I own do not feed or shoot that great with any of the ammo I have tried. I have about eight rimfires at this time and the Marlins with the microgrooved barrels just shoot wonderful. Of the two rifles on your list I would go with the Savage if you have something aginst Marlin rifles. I am no expert but I do shoot alot of rimfire rifles because they do not break the bank as quickly as the centerfire rifles do.
  17. Bubbatn, That is a great looking toy. I just wanted to let you know that I have been wanting an SKS for the past few months and found your post and this site in the process of doing some research. Enjoy that great looking rifle.
  18. Thank You for the friendly welcome everyone.
  19. Well they start the demo and I get to then rebuild, replace, or modify things to her liking. Examples include: One time I got home from a business trip and the panneling on our bathroom walls was removed with live exposed wires hanging at all the outlets. Light fixtures in the floor and a note reading "call if you need anything from Lowes, I getting some cute lights. My wife is a wonderful lady and we have a great time working on projects togather. I just wish she would take it a little slower. I thank we need a new shotgun more than new columns on the fromt porch don't you guys? and isnt a new fireproof safe more important than a ventless gas fireplace?
  20. My model 60 is by far the best 22 I own and is the cheapest and only used one in the bunch. I grabed it for 80 bucks at a show in Kingsort in 2004. My three Ruger 10-22's are not even close. Federal bulk ammo is the only problem I have had.
  21. Ladies and Gentlemen, I am Mason from Northeast Tennessee. I am a big fan of almost anything with a trigger or a motor. My recent free time has been consumed at home with my wife and dog working on a large number of home improvement projects. In the summer I waste my time shooting pistols, riding motorcycles, fishing, farming, and being drug around behind my ski boat. In the winter I shoot shotguns, hunt, restore antique tractors, and work on my antique cars. Like most folks I spend way too much time working and not enough playing. I enjoy spending time with my family, friends, and church. If you want to know anything about me please ask. I am sure I will learn alot from the many menbers here. I signed up today after doing some research on C&R licences and getting sidetracked looking at a post or two regarding concealed carry. my replies may take a bit of extra time because I currently do not have internet access at home.
