HCP man stops carjacking in Memphis
ZenDog replied to mac12's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Woohoo! Go dude. That bad guy might have been hit, and might remember the event in the future. Might not. The readers comments in the Commercial Appeal are overwhelmingly supportive of the HCP holder. -
Power to the people, y'all. News from Rocky Top UT Students to Protest Ban of Handguns on Campus <table><tbody><tr valign="top"><td>Contributor: Shane Myers Email: smyers@myeyewitnessnews.com </td></tr></tbody></table> KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Some University of Tennessee students plan to protest state laws and university policies that bar handguns on campus. The students say they will wear empty gun holsters, beginning Monday, April 21, 2008. UT senior student Nathan Robinson said it would be part of a nationwide protest by a group called Students for Concealed Carry on Campus. Robinson said the weeklong protest would be limited to wearing holsters, wearing T-shirts and passing out fliers. State lawmakers recently voted down a bill that would have allowed faculty and staff members to carry handguns on state college campuses if they had valid permits. --- Information from: The Knoxville News Sentinel, http://www.knoxnews.com

Believe it or not, when I took the HCP class there were 2 people who failed the shooting part out of a class of 20. They definitely needed more time with the weapon! I don't think the state should require more practice after the initial qualification test-- training should be up to the permit holder's discretion.

I have an almost 13 year old step son, Carl-- I have taken him shooting at RangeUSA a couple of times. His dad doesn't shoot or do much that is traditionally considered masculine, so I am teaching him the fine art of marksmanship. Because of schools, careers, etc, he is only at my house a couple of days a week- the rest of the time he lives with his dad and stepmom. Like many women, Carl's mother's second husband (me) is a lot different than her first husband (Carl's dad). I shoot, love football, most sports, am a lifelong athlete, and will fight in a heartbeat to protect my wife and child, and country. Carl's dad is a really nice guy, who is really good at being really nice. He isn't too good at any traditional man stuff except controlling the remote. Carl's mom, my wife, goes with us and she shoots too (and she's a fair shot/HCP holder), but she has left most of the instruction to me. When I was 12, Carl would be the kind of kid I would have had nothing to do with, or, if he had crossed me, I probably would have punched him a time or two. He's incredibly bright- both of his parents are academics. He's also geeky, nerdy, uncoordinated, goody two shoes, nonathletic, a scaredy cat--- a bit of an odd duck. He is hard for me to like. I was a bad boy, always in trouble, fought a lot, and had no use for kids like Carl when I was 12 (or 20, or 40, or 50...) I like him a lot better when we shoot together. He has mixed feelings about shooting- the intensity of the indoor range kinda freaks him out, and the attention to detail required for safety is not his forte, but in our two trips to the range he has already improved a lot and his aim is becoming more steady. He knows he is accomplishing something unusual for someone in his family. And I really am glad I like him more. I think I just needed to see him do SOMETHING that was from the same planet as I am from. Something special happened the first time we went. My dad was a competitive pistol shooter- I inherited his long barreled .38 S&W revolver. I think it is about 60 years old. It had not been fired since about 1957, when my dad gave up shooting for medical reasons. My dad has been dead for 33 years. I cleaned it up, checked it out, and bought some practice ammo. I fired the first two cylinders, and then Carl fired his first shot ever as a young man from that weapon. He did pretty well with it- naturally, it has low recoil, and my dad had it set up with a really light trigger, so it is easy to shoot accurately. So I connected with my Dad when I fired that .38 -- I have pictures of him as a man much younger than I am, in Army khakis, firing that weapon in competitions in Japan during the Korean War. One handed, left handed. I fired the first round one handed, left handed through that .38, even though I am a righty. (Two hands works better for me!) And I connected with my step son through that .38. He likes me more, I like him more. I notice I am more tolerant of the things in him that are not like me. My father's hands, my hands, Carl's hands- 3 generations of men firing that .38. I think we'll shoot some more, soon.

Welcome, neighbor. I live near the U of M- what part of town do you live in?

Dang, I should charge y'all just for reading this #$%#$ thread. I do a lot of marriage counseling- I get well paid for it ---it is hard, crazy-making work. Just like reading this thread has been. I threw one couple out of my office a few years ago when it became apparent that neither was going to change, both were yelling, neither was listening, and my blood pressure was going up. I hereby ban myself from reading anymore of this particular thread-- it is too much like work. Good luck y'all.

Hey! I got a Bday AK too, last week. Not my photo, but it looks like this one-- We should get a commie gun group shoot together somewhere someday.

Kwikr, The Chinese have a saying "It is a curse to be born in interesting times." My life is a lot less interesting than it was a few years back when I was stuck with courts and lawyers every few weeks!! I am so glad it isn't that interesting anymore. I hope your future is not as interesting as your present.

Jaegermeister = Yeager. It was a bilingual joke about Yeager. I lived in Germany 8 or 9 years, so I do that sort of bilingual joke thing. We aren't supposed to say the 'Y' name on this board because too many people will get upset and have to vent their angry feelings through the pixels on their screens. I respect their opinions about 'Y'; I did not want to arouse sleeping dogs. And, I really am a little too fond of Jaegermeister.

Y'all have gone over to the dark side of the Force. Electronic crack- y'all are all electronic crack heads. The machines have you in their power. Take the red pill, Neo. Get a Big Screen Window-- they function perfectly, they never need upgrading, and the bill is much lower. Reality is analog. Only the machines are digital. Pretty soon y'all will all be shooting digital ammo.

Front Site seems too smarmy slick marketing hype to me- in it for the money first. Come to Memphis and take some classes at RangeUSA or Rangemaster- more for your money, more reputable, cheaper, little to no travel expense---etc. And there's a lot of training in Camden, but some folks on this list don't like the reputation of the owner of that place... but the training, I hear, is decent, even if the owner, Jaegermeister or something like that, is held in low regard.

Well, sometimes sh$t just happens- my wife was in 4 accidents in 3 months a few years back- only 1 was her fault. No accidents before that time frame, none since then. It was just a rough summer for her and her T-Bird. She's a good driver. It is easy to infer error on the part of others like the OP when we hear of the chaos that has been in his life, but we haven't walked in his shoes. Or, it could be bad karma of some sort working out. We have no idea. ...but I think I won't park next to him anytime soon- I'll make sure my car is a few spaces away from his!! I'm glad he got a lawyer-- this is too important to try to do without representation.

Welcome- I'm trying to get my wife on the TGO board-- maybe one day she'll join you here.

Get a lawyer. Once I represented myself- It ended up costing me about 3 years of time (not incarcerated, just in going through the courts) and about $100,000 in income. I was trying to save money by representing myself and not paying an attorney $2500. Was that smart or what? I don't like paying lawyers anymore than I like paying plumbers. But if I don't know what I am doing, paying a lawyer (or plumber) is usually cheaper than me doing it myself.
