UPDATE: Less than impressed with my 700 accuracy.
maroonandwhite replied to maroonandwhite's topic in Long Guns
I'll double check the action screws when I get home and maybe just remove it and re seat it all. I don't have anything to measure torque with so I am just guessing at it. I usually use the short end of the allen wrench and get it tight as I can turn the maybe a quarter turn more. Greg it has the Xmark pro trigger but isn't the externally adjustable one. Should I mess with adjusting it? When I last has the action off it look adjustable but seemed that Remington had put epoxy over the screw. -

I think in addition to trying hand loads I am going to break down an buy a box of the Winchester silver tips. They have always been pretty consistent for me in past rifles. -

Yeah I was going to try 150 but by that time I had just got tired of all the walking haha. My cousin is going to help me with some hand loads so I know that part of the equation is right. After that I may drop $100 on a boyds stock and just use that to get me through the hunting season then maybe get is pillar bedded and glass bedded later on. -

It's a .243. It's just odd because it shot pretty decent out to 100. -

I am really liking the look and the price of the Boyd's stocks. For $100 it may be worth a shot if I can't get it worked out with ammo. Is there anything to "breaking in" a barrel? I have never done it on any of the other rifles I owned in the past and have just seen some others saying that may be the issue. Also I may need to get some better scope rings. It came with leupold rifleman series mounts and rings which I though would be sufficient. -
As the title states I am kind of discouraged with the accuracy of my Remington 700 ADL. I realize the cheaper stock probably has something to do with this but I didn't think it would be this bad. I sighted it in at 1.25" high at 50 yards. No problem at all there. That meant it should be about 2.8" high at 100 yards. Again no problem there. It shot within 1/4-1/2" of the mark at both those distances. The problem was when I stretched out to 250. My first two shots were down/left of the bulls eye about 4" and up/right about 4". I let the wife shoot it after that (a pretty good shooter) and she didn't hit the paper either time. I then took one more shot at hit the bottom left outside ring of the target. Feeling discouraged I fired again at the 100 yard mark and hit about 1" away from the first mark fired at 100. I was careful to not pull or flinch on all shots and was shooting from a lead sled. I am hoping this can be corrected with different/better ammo as I am shooting the Remington Core Lokt 100 gr. I would just rather not dump a bunch of money into a stock and bedding right now in order to get it to shoot well if I can help it. I am not opposed to trying to free float the barrel but from what I read online this is not a good idea with the flimsy plastic stock the ADL comes with. Any suggestions?

It's just odd that it needs to come back that far. Maybe this stock is longer than the displays in the store they normally have them mounted on. That would make sense.

As pointed out in another post I just bought a new scope for my wife's Remington 700. The problem is in order to get the correct eye relief I have to run the scope all the way back with the turret touching the rear scope ring. Is this okay? I had read elsewhere online that I can purchase extension scope rings that sit back a little further than the base but I have no experience with those. I just don't want to mess anything up. The most reasonable answer I have come up with so far is that as long as I don't over tighten the screws I'll be fine.

I agree with him on all accounts. We don't have kids yet but when we do they will be home schooled. We are working towards getting the bills paid off now so the wife won't have to work. I will take a less frivolous lifestyle with one income over someone else raising my kids all day every day. I have joked with her that she can go to work and I'll home school! If that were to happen the kids would probably be really proficient with handguns but not so great at math.

Vortex Diamondback 4-12x40 DEAL!!!
maroonandwhite replied to maroonandwhite's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
That's weird. I did actually go on ebay and make an offer of $140. Don't know if that made a difference. I am sure they give them a lowest percentage they can go down and just let them use their discretion. Unless a manager was standing over her shoulder she did not put me on hold to check with anyone. Either way $170 is still a pretty good deal. I FINALLY received the scope last night and am pleased with it just from looking through it in the house. It feels sturdy and the zoom is easy to turn. It was tight at first but after a few turns it loosened up. I like the zero reset turrets but have never used them so it should be fun to experiment with. I won't use them hunting as I'll just set it for a dead on hold out to around 275ish. Hopefully it draws in a good amount of light but I will find that out this evening. I am going to go sit in the stand just for the heck of it. Maybe a coyote will walk out. -

Well if mine ever gets delivered I'll let ya'll know how I like it! It was sent Fedex smartpost and if any of you have ever dealt with that you know it's the worst idea anyone has ever came up with other than the ACA. It should be here tomorrow but has literally taken just over a week. -
Nice! The grain pattern on the first and the knot and the last are pretty cool. I want my next few to have a little more "character" like these.

Yep. I once had a security six that I am still kicking myself for trading. It was the same way.

Making my own handles. Need a little guidance.

Well they are done. Not too bad for a first try huh? I'm going to be ordering a scroll saw and sander from harbor freight soon and hope to improve my abilities. Thanks for all the help! Let me know what you think. -

If was like freaking magic. He turned it this way the that way then another way and voila. Also got the blanks cut for the smaller knife. I'll post up pics as they progress. For now I'm gonna let the epoxy get good and hard before hand shaping. -

Wow I don't feel so bad now! Yes this is the same knife haha. Just have to use my imagination now. Any tips for the hand shaping? -

Good news! I am going over to an experienced wood worker/knife makers house tonight to get some guidance. He is going to help me with the "important" knife. Not much I can do with this one until the glue dries but I think it should turn out fine. -

This just further reminds me it's nice to have the "tool for the job". Broomhead just think of this method as the "stock removal" method. -

 What can I say...I get anxious. In my defense someone else online had a tutorial to do it like this. I am thinking once it dries it should be pretty easy to just rough cut it down like lester said then finish it off by hand. Wonder if I jigsaw would be too harsh for the wood.? -

Oops... Guess we will see what happens haha. FYI this is the izula that I am not too concerned about. Practice for the knife for my grandpa. -

Wow that's a pretty good deal! I will definitely have to look into getting one of those. -
I am trying my hand at making some scales/handles for my Izula 2 as well as a small knife blank I bought for a Christmas present for my grandpa. I will be using maple on one and walnut on the other. The wood choice may not be the greatest but the whole point to that is that it came from his farm and was cut and planed down by him. He just doesn't know what I'm doing with it. With that said: I went to lowes this morning and bought a combo file, some epoxy and some 3/16" brass rod stock. I am wondering the best way to start the process. The blanks I have are 2x5x3/8". I am thinking of just drilling the holes first and fastening them to the knife and letting the epoxy dry. THEN going back and rough cutting the blanks and finishing. The Izula will be tricky because it has the big open center. I figure if I fill it all with epoxy it will make it's own "insert" though and hold well. Also any tips on actually setting the brass inserts will help. I guess you just tap them with a ball peen??? I can get some pics up of what Im working with in a little while if that will help. Edit:Correction 3/16" brass rod

Thanks Dave. Do you have a link or a brand name to search for? Also this will be used by me as well. I have just over a 300 yard shot possible in this stand so I'd like to be as steady as possible. Plus it will boost her confidence a little. She's a great shot but only at paper so far. Factor in the cold and adrenaline rush she hasn't felt yet and Im sure she'll be shaking a little. Heck I still do haha. Out to 50-75 yards I am confident she could make a free handed shot.

Can anyone recommend some type of gun rest that would work out of a ladder stand? My wife will be hunting out of a double stand with me and although it has a fold down shooting rest it's really too low to get a good prop on. I am thinking something that will screw into the tree. If all else fails I'll just get a mono pod but i'd prefer something more solid.
