I have an idea for a storm shelter.

Wow. Thanks for the info. I’d be interested in seeing some pictures of you want to share. Great idea on opening in. I’d probably store my chainsaw in there as well just in case. -

I do. That’s about the size I’m considering. Just enough to fit 4-5 people at most. I guess I’m also wondering if it will actually be safe. I see pics all the time of homes completely gone with only the safe room left standing. The alternative is in the hill side 100 yards from the house. The wife wants electricity though and that will be a pain. She is also nervous of critters that move in, spiders, etc. I know I don’t want one with the door on top. I’m to nervous of getting trapped in them. With a normal door I can at least attempt to kick or cut my way out. -
I just had what I hope is a great idea. I’ve been thinking of getting a storm shelter for a few years now. Each bad storm that comes through renews the thought. I have pole barn structure with my house portion built inside. I’ll attach a pic of my garage portion. My though is to use the back right corner shown in the picture to build out an above ground storm shelter using cinder blocks. I assume all I’d need to do is lay them, insert rebar, then pour concrete in them. I’d also run a light and some power inside to be able to run a space heater. I have an extra metal exterior door like the one in the pic I can use on it. I’d probably leave a few openings in the side bricks for circulation and to allow someone to hear us in case we were stuck in it. Im unsure of how to do the roof portion though. Build a wood frame then lay bricks over?

AR Braces. Here to stay?
maroonandwhite replied to maroonandwhite's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
True that. I might be making a new post about the whole gun rather than the stock depending on how that goes. -
To the point quickly. Do you think AR pistol braces will hold the current ruling that by shouldering them they do not constitute a design change that would render them as an illegal SBR? Don’t worry, I won’t be writing anyone a letter for clarification lol. It just drives me up the wall. It just seems silly to me that an SB3 or SB4 is somehow different than a true stock I’m their eyes. The SB4 especially. I know I’m talking about the crowd that thinks fore grips and pistol grips are deadly but really? It seems at this point they’d just say screw it and stop making us find solutions to get around their idiocy.

Honestly for me it’s been eye opening that I need to have more savings. Something I’ve always known but you know how that goes. Luckily my wife and I are both still working but if we were both sent home it’d be tough. No debt but the house but still..... I keep seeing people in tears because they are scared to go to work in places open to the public . I’m sure most of them don’t have the option to just take off and go home. On the material side. I want to get plenty of propane stocked up for my dual fuel generator along with a decent plan to manually pump water from my deep well.

G&A Editorial on The Current Economics of Ammo
maroonandwhite replied to Jamie Jackson's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
I honestly don’t think there will be a long term shortage. Just from observations up until last week. Ammo was trickling in to stores and there weren’t people setup to snatch it all up for resale. One thing that is different....in the last .22lr shortage, there were multiple people in my area buying it for resale at local shops. A lot of those shops don’t exist anymore. I do think prices will go up and not come back down. I really have no evidence to support any of this but it’s my gut feeling. -
I work at a local community bank. We’ve closed the lobby and are doing everything through the drive through window and tubes. We occasionally have someone in with appointment if it can’t be avoided. It’s obviously affected our traffic but so far we have no cases within our workforce

Thanks for the confirmation. As you said, this won’t be a bench gun. My shoulder wouldn’t like it but I also couldn’t afford it haha.

Welcome! The good news is you can learn lots from YouTube. A good instructor is hard to beat but once you get some basics you can always get on YouTube for more tips. Just be sure to use discernment. There are some idiots on there as well. Dryfire is basically just going through the motions of drawing and/or shooting along with manipulations of the gun. Make sure you have no ammo in the room or near you as an extra level of safety. I usually choose an external wall in the house facing away from anyone. You won’t gain any recoil control practice from this but if you focus on proper draw, grip and a smooth trigger pull it WILL help you over time.

I watched that way too many times.

Someone school me on barrel life. Looks like I may be hanging on to my .300 RUM and am reading up on barrel life in magnum calibers. I doubt I’ll ever shoot a rifle barrel out but since this caliber seems to be on the upper end of a “barrel burner” I’d like to keep an eye on it and take proper precautions. Any info or tips?

I’m in a situation where I’m pretty “safe” going to work with minimal contact to others. We also have a decent amount of supplies and go to a small town grocery store to resupply. All that said, I’d like to wait and see on any vaccine released. I’m guessing they won’t follow the normal trial period timeline and I don’t care to be a guinea pig.

Oddly enough I haven’t had the urge to pick up the guitar through all of this. A good dose of SRV usually cures that.

I actually kind of like some of the quad rail models. Not the old school, massive ones though. I’m having a minor issue now with an “in style” handguard. No rail where I need a rail. I don’t have a pic of my first but it was a PSA parts build. It’s lower is all that’s left of it which is now an SBR.

Pressure pad or tail cap switch?
maroonandwhite replied to maroonandwhite's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
I think my issue with my particular setup is the lack of a top rail. I’ve found that’s about the only position I find comfortable for the switch. I’ll probably run this one switchless and go with an OWL on my next build. I really like the integral switch on it. -
Y’all stop being so civil to each other. This is a pandemic.

Your favorite press? (Non progressive)
maroonandwhite replied to maroonandwhite's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
I think I’ve decided on the coax. I’d always had a Rock Chucker at the top of the list until I saw the Hornady. I think the coax will satisfy my needs over all of them. Thanks for all the suggestions. -

There is actually one listed that’s missing the primer tube and can. I’ll probably just get a new one for the price difference. -
Far as I can tell the west side of the state doesn’t know there is a problem. Folks everywhere.

maroonandwhite replied to maroonandwhite's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
One thing I didn’t like about my turret press was the movement allowed in the turret. When I’d raise the ram, the turret would come up by a few mm. It just had a certain tolerance built in to allow the turret to spin without binding. I’m not sure if it had an effect on the final product or not but I’m looking for something a little more precise this time around. I’m not gonna spend more just for the sake of it but I do want to get something a little more solid. -

Thanks. I’m not really concerned with speed. Just the best practice. Looks like you would have to handle each primer with the coax. Would a hand primer or other standalone seater be ideal? -

maroonandwhite replied to maroonandwhite's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Wow. The coax looks super nice. I hadn’t seen it before. I’ll have to figure out the best way to insert primers since the built in seater looks slow. Do most of you do them with a handheld seater? I was using a Lee turret press before that had a gravity feed seater. -
I’m looking to get back into rifle reloading. I did the bulk pistol thing on a Dillon 550 when I was doing a lot of competitive shooting and just got sick of reloading. Once the word normalizes I plan to get a nicer single stage press to load rifle ammo. I’m really leaning heavily toward the Hornady Iron press but looking for some advice and recommendations. I would eventually get a trickle powder measure but would initially rely on manual powder dump. My main reason for the Hornady is to take advantage of the lock and load system.

This just inspires more confidence to me. And looks better if that should be a factor.
