Does it seem 22 shortage is getting worse?
graycrait replied to urdubob's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Looks like it is going to be a long wait just to get Mexican made .22LR: Got this today from CMP. I used to buy Aguila from LGS. If CMP is having difficulty then I don't stand much of chance. Looks like it is going to be a grim year or two yet in .22LR land: AGUILA .22LR AND .30 CARBINE AMMO PRICE INCREASES. For the past seven years CMP has purchased Aguila ammunition from Centurion Ordnance, Helotes, TX. Centurion Ordnance is no longer the U.S. distributor for Aguila ammunition. The sole U.S. distributor for Aguila ammunition now is Texas Armament & Technology (TX-AT) in Houston, TX. Yesterday we received new pricing from TX-AT and adjusted our selling prices accordingly. Prices now are as follows: Aguila Standard Velocity .22LR, 5000 rd case, CMP item number 419ASVSE, increase from $260 to $305 per case. Aguila Target Golden Eagle .22LR, 5000 rd case, CMP item number 419ASVGE, increase from $385 to $445 per case. Aguila .30 Carbine FMJ, 500 rd case, CMP item number 438A, increase from $210 to $225 per case. CMP regrets that we have to pass these increases on to our customers and understands that some of our customers will now wish to cancel their orders. Please email cancellation requests to custserve@thecmp.org. AGUILA .22LR DELIVERY STATUS. The Aguila ammunition distributor, TX-AT, has informed CMP that due to the massive nationwide Rimfire shortage deliveries to CMP will only be a few hundred cases every 4-6 weeks and it may take another year to receive all the .22LR ammunition we currently have on order with them. When this ammo is received, customers who had orders already placed with the CMP will be contacted to determine if they wish to pay the increased price per case or if they wish to cancel their orders. Customers with oldest orders will be contacted first. Until all existing orders have been filled, CMP will not accept any new orders for Aguila .22LR. -
.22 shortage, according to Win. rep

The thing which "amuses" me most is how otherwise sensible folk get bamboozled into fear buying reactions in response to Internet nonsense perpetuated by gougers and other private sellers in firearms, who use scare tactics sent in "bold 20 font" to sell ammo at "unreasonable prices. Things like, "the last smelter in US closing = no more ammo," or "Obama is going to take all your guns." Or, "DHS is buying all the .22LR to ensure that no kids get to shoot." or "The government is buying all the .22LR ammunition, buy mine for 3 times what I paid for it yesterday at Walmart." Ok, I haven't seen the last one but that is the intent of them all. It pains me to see gun guys "doing it" to gun guys. I get the current surge in consumption due to various factors, but it does bother me that our own shooting sports brethren would perpetuate myths to profit on fear, and doubly pains me to see gullible folk figuratively and literally "buy" into it. -

Go aftermarket. Stock is lame:) http://s862.photobucket.com/user/graycrait/media/RedGlocks.jpg.html?sort=3&o=282

I had an X5 Tactical, nice big gun, fun to shoot at the range. I don't miss it except for seeing those smiles from anyone who shot it. Always wanted to shoot a 210 but am not willing to "pay to play."

A friend of mine had a pair of SKS Norinco Paratroopers, this is what he did for his two sons. Craig, Timbersmith stocks Murray’s triggers, hammers, sears Tech-Sight insert-ready aperture sights KNS Precision .052 front sight posts TAPCO gas pistons Sling swivel studs for Harris bipods Recrowned one muzzle The gunsmith tuned, hand-fitted, shimmed, etc. what were a couple of hastily assembled rifles. The extra LOP compared with the Chinese paratrooper stock is very nice. The Monte Carlo stock’s cheekpiece is too. The rubber recoil pad may or may not make much difference but the SKS’s recoil never bothered me anyways. The gunsmith was impressed with the Timbersmith stocks but he said that it could be quite a project for your average do-it-yourselfer. He had to do a lot of inletting and hand fitting to get them right. I am a big fan of Tech-Sights and the extra sight radius that they provide on these rifles is outstanding.

5 minutes with a dremel fixes the bolt release. I have been doing this simple mod for years. ONce done it still works but to release it all you have to do is pull back slightly on the charging handle and it is released. It isn't hard and doesn't require anything but eyeball approximation. Or you can buy an aftermarket replacement. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6cSmF1eIXY http://www.rimfiresports.com/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=RSC&Product_Code=VC10BR&Category_Code=R1A

kidd trigger install problem
graycrait replied to gomer pyle's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
a Kidd kit in a plastic trigger housing is the bomb. -
The Boyd's Tacticool is a really nice stock for the money. Midway sells unfinished ones at a good price. I am working on a putting together a nice 10/22 for a Nashville doc who is a TGOr that utilizes a Tacticool. I spent a good bit of time on his unfinished Tacticool. Barrel and bolt are off getting accurized. I'll post up some pics in a couple of weeks. The problem with 10/22 barrels is that you are limited with either 28/29" or 22" or less. Back in the heyday of bolt 22s by Remington, 26" or so was common. I cut a 29" barrel to 18.5" but should have cut it to 26". I am reluctant to cut this 28" to 26" as it shoots pretty well as is. Really quiet with subsonics and pellet gun quiet with Colibras.

Pretty simple set up: Green Mountain 28" barrel PWS T-Rex stock (on sale for 115.00 through Hawktech Arms) DNZ (High) one piece scope mount Simmons Whitetail Classic 6.5-20x50mmAO <30ft (was on sale through MidwaryUSA for 100.00) Trigger job by TGOr Plinker4life Now the tuning of bedding and ammo begins. Incidentally, if your .22LR supports such a large scope these Midway-only Whitetail classics work really well for the money. Anyone have any idea what the new Gallatin plant is going to produce? Parts? If complete firearms which one(s)?

LOL, talk about phases. I started with DA revolvers then went through dozens of revolvers and pistols, TGo'rs have seen a lot of my choices, but I didn't join until after my CZ phase. I suspect I have had 20 some Glocks, yet still have my first G19 and classify it and my Keltec .32 as my daily carry. My wife has a G26 she has had for 7 years. I love the machinery of revolvers and can shoot DAO revolvers pretty darn well. However after taking a snubbie defensive pistol class I got rid of my revolvers and just use Glocks for a SYA pistol. I sort of regret letting two big pistols go, a Dan Wesson Pointman 9mm and a Sig X-5 Tactical, but they were too big for practical carry. I really liked the HK P7 and the CZ 85 Combat I had. I have had quite a few 1911s and although I love the trigger and simplicity I can live with the weight. I would like to run into a DW .22 revolver some day, but my Sig Trailside and Ruger 2245 suffice in that category. There are guns I like the aesthetics better and can shoot a bit better on the range than a Glock, but none I trust more. As far as the Keltec 32? At 6.6 oz empty and with ball ammo it is what it is. The one I have in hardchrome has never failed. I wish someone could design a really small Keltec .32 sized .22LR. The Bobcat ain't it in size or reliability. The Jennings J22 wasn't quite "it" either. So it remains, G19 and KT32.

I've had 3 Hi Points, all in 9mm, no complaints here.

I didn't have the gun long enough to know anything about it. Traded it for a 10/22 so I have something to tinker with for a couple of weeks. Haven't seen a box of .22WMR for sale in a store forever anyway. Just didn't feel like waiting for another year or two to be able to buy as much ammo for it as I wanted. I was not overly impressed with the Ruger American. Why did I trade for it in the first place? An old friend wanted one of my other .22s and he had this so I traded, expecting that I could get a 1022 out of the Ruger American faster than I could out of the other rifle. I may have kept this one had it been .22LR.

It would be interesting for the games I guess, and maybe LEO/Mil duty. It also looks like it would be easy to use the rear sight to rack the slide one handed on your gear/clothing.

I have not seen one 50rd box of any Aguila.22LR ammo since Sandy Hook. I used to enjoy messing around with their wide variety of .22 ammo types but not any longer. Anyone know where Aguila has gone to?

Very educational. Thanks all for taking the time to post this useful information

Traded for this today, NIB RAR .22WMR w/Simmons 22MAG 3-9x32 AO scope & 250 rds of .22wmr.

For some dumb reason I am trading one of my .22 rifles to a fella in a week for an RAR in .22WMR. I just emailed him telling him not to bring me a RAR .22WMR that falls within the affected range. Thanks guys for the warning. I literally hate shipping a gun back to a manufacturer.

Just remember that if you take other people's guns into your home to do gun work for money the ATF could become interested in your business unless you have an FFL. I still have my first "jacked" up grip job that I did just about everything to including some Devcon. That pistol fits me like a glove and looks like hell. I have done more than a couple of grip jobs, more as favors than anything else and taught several other fellas how to do it. I quit doing them when I realized that what I was doing was essentially illegal without an FFL.

When does Wally set out ammo in the am?
graycrait replied to serbu50's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
What would be the profile of person who buys 5 cents/rd ammo for 12-15 cents/rd from a reseller? Also, if you are in TN reselling ammo is there any requirement about tax stamps? -
BallisticArms, Very nice job. If you find that you have jacked up a grip then get black Devcon 290. You can fix or even custom mold a grip on a polymer gun with it. What I find interesting is some folks' reluctance to make a gun fit to them when it is relatively simple and not particularly time consuming when dealing with polymer framed guns. Skill set and tools are minimal. Glocks are tools, like a favoirte hammer, it ain't collectible as they all look the same and there is about a zillion of them around the world. A heavy Royal Blue Colt Python is a collectible handgun, Glock ain't. Which would I rather carry to a gunfight? Glock. Get your Dremel, heat gun, candle, Devcon or whatever and make that Glock fit you better.

I've had a pile of .22s and I would recommend looking for an older Remington Speedmaster Model 552 ACL if having a walk in the woods semi-auto .22 is your No. 1 criteria. Currently Remington only makes the fancier and more costly BDL version. This .22 has been in production a long time. The really cool thing about the 552 is that it will shoot nearly any .22 bullet you feed into the tube. I didn't try Stingers but I shot in one tube a mix of short, long and long rifle, subsonic, Hypervelocity and HV. Crazy but it would shoot them all. Of course such a mix strings up and down the target but the gun would shoot them all. In these times of shoot what you can get the Speedmaster's ability to digest a wide variety of ammo in a semi is an attractive option. Used you should be able to find a nice one for 300-350, maybe less one that has seen some outer wear. Of course if you want a nice little bullet slinger semi that is light and easy to carry others have mentioned the Marlin 60 and its Glenfield twin. Over 11 million 60's have been sold.

Saw a R51....OS, I was wrong again...

My favorite things next to my wife, the dogs, fishing and playing ball sports is shooting .22LR. I am truly sad that I can not any longer go into my LGS and buy 7-10 different kinds of .22 ammo in 50 rd boxes and play with them at the range. I wish a pox on every hoarder and hope every reseller dies of spontaneous combustion. I hope every AR-style hi cap .22LR firearm disintegrates in the safe.
