"In other news, today the internet crashed briefly from an overload of sheer cuteness..."

For a grand I'd get an AR. Heck for a little more you could get an M&P Sport and an Aimpoint Pro and have a great setup. AKs are all well and good, but they ceased being competitive with ARs when they became the same in price.

Rifle Gunfighting Tunica MS March 9-10 2013
Stegall Law Firm replied to Cruel Hand Luke's topic in Training Discussions
Intriguing. I will keep this in mind. I have a couple questions, purely out of curiosity and probably some ignorance: why the 500-ish round count? I like the idea because it probably lends itself to more efficient training. But compared to say TR, which advises 1500 and seems excessive, I'd just like to know the reason behind it. Also, what is your research for concluding the close proximity of rifle fights? I don't doubt its veracity, just like to know what data you used. AARs and such? -
It could be a lot. TN law says that a felon in possession of a firearm, who has been convicted of a felony involving a deadly weapon, will be charged with a class C felony. The range on that is 3-15 years (3-6 for someone with little or no prior record). Interestingly, possession of a handgun is 1-6 as an E felony, but you can assume from the article that a long gun was involved (AND a handgun, actually). In the fed I believe it would be up to 10. Worst case, he could get popped for both pistol and rifle in both state and federal, possible consecutive sentencing.
Domestic Violence & a felon ... I knew I didn't like that guy. What's the standard charge/sentence for a convicted felon owning a firearm? Ex Felon Arrested After Shooting Intruders
Stegall Law Firm replied to xRUSTYx's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
It isn't too difficult to get your rights restored, but that does not include firearm rights. Getting your gun rights back after a felony is well-nigh impossible in Tennessee. Restoration of rights generally means voting and serving on a jury. Diversion is always an option for first-time offenders. All non-violent or non-sex related felonies are eligible for it in Tennessee, though the judge could deny your request. That happened recently in Memphis. A young guy, maybe 20, was speeding through a neighborhood and struck and killed a man as he was going to check his mail. He was charged with and pled guilty to one of the lower homicides, reckless or maybe negligent, can't remember, then the judge denied his petition for diversion. So this 20-year old guy, who committed what was really a horrible accident more than anything, is a felon for life. Forget gun rights, just try and get a job! -

If this happened in Tennessee he could not be charged in state court (assuming it was justified) but he could be charged federally. -
It's amusing, but one day moves really don't mean much. Just an example of the super volatile nature of our electronic, high frequency markets. This probably had as much to do with Europe as anything else.

Tyler (Glock 30) recently sold me a 556 AR that he built, and it is sweet. He knows his stuff. Those 9 mils look awesome and I'm sure they run just as good.
-
So glad I just bought my first AR, with mag prices like this. I bought 10 pmags right off the bat and should go head and get some more. Much better than, say, a Saiga 223 (which I also have...30 bucks a mag... ) or anything in 5.45. Even the vaunted Euro surplus AK mags are going up in price, and the last batch I got looked like they came off a battlefield in Chechnya.

We'll be staying here. Couple things I'll definitely be looking at: what's around the land and is it in the way of future development. A lot to think about and consider.

A little bit more about wanting to get out of the city: where we live, we have great neighbors. Been here several years. But this area is in decline, and it's way too overbuilt. Houses are packed in like sardines. So far this year I've seen the police on my street on five different occasions, responding to calls. And not just cruising by, but actually out canvassing the neighborhood. Five times! The last time was at MY house. This was a few weeks ago, about 8 pm. Several cruisers pull up outside, lights flashing. Two officers knock on my door and I go talk to them. Turns out there was an armed robbery nearby and the suspect was seen driving a car matching a description of my wife's car, which was parked in the driveway. As I'm standing in the doorway talking to them, another officer is strolling across my front yard with an AR15. He'd been checking around the side of the house. Holy crap! We're getting out of here, I told my wife after that. (This is Memphis, btw.)

Great responses so far, thanks. I was thinking you'd need more land than just a few acres. I was thinking at least 10, which I'd still like to get if we can afford it. The more the better.
-
How many acres do you need if you want to be able to shoot on your own land without bullets flying on someone else's property or the neighbors being upset by the sound (assuming no suppression)? I've always been an urban/suburban dweller, but me and Mrs. S. have decided it's time to start looking at getting some land and setting up our own little homestead. We pretty much want to do it for the same reasons everyone else does: freedom, wide open spaces, all that. We're tired of the city life. Obviously there are going to be a lot more considerations here than just being able to shoot our guns. Proximity to schools, commute to work, where's the water coming from, are there any easements, or restrictive covenants or ordinances...probably many many others. But I definitely want an area big enough to shoot on. And I'm not talking long range. 50 yards would be more than enough probably, but I'd want to shoot bigger than 22 long. And I'd want to be able to do dynamic (not flat-footed) training. Not 360 degrees, but plenty of running, crouching, shooting on the move, etc. So for those of you who can shoot on your own land, how'd you do it, and what are your dimensions like? Did you build a berm? How many acres would it take? Do you ever get complaints from neighbors? Would love to hear some input on this.

Anyone watching? Pretty good game last night. The Giants pitching is just dominant, four runs given up in the last five games. But Doug Fister of the Tigers is my new hero. He takes a line drive off the head, and it looked absolutely frightening, but he stays in the game and retires 12 in a row after that, ends up pitching six innings of one-run ball. It looked awful when he was hit, but I guess it wasn't that bad. Hope he doesn't suffer any after effects. On the mound the trainer was asking him, "What city are you in?," "What game is it?" Tim McCarver needs to just go away. He said pitchers should wear helmets now, like the batters. If you're going to do that, might as well not even call it baseball. They've already emasculated the game enough, with pitchers not being allowed to throw inside anymore. I understand safety, but at some point you have to say enough is enough. There's a certain risk you just have to accept. If you don't like it, don't play the game. So is anyone watching? Anyone care? I still think Detroit can get back in this series.

Actually most new lawyers come in the fall. Majority of law students graduate in May, take the bar in July, and get licensed in Oct/Nov, assuming they passed. If it were me, I'd certainly want up front from the defendant (the armed citizen). If it were a criminally justified shooting I'd tell him or her that the law allows us to recoup attorney fees, etc., but (as others have pointed out) don't count on that actually happening. As for the shootee, I wouldn't even take that kind of case because that's just not what I do, but if I was a plaintiff's lawyer and it was clearly a justified shooting I probably still wouldn't take it. If the client broke out the checkbook and said, just tell me what number to write, I would put it in the fee agreement that they understand the difficulties of the case and that they may end up paying more, that there are no guarantees, etc. But if it was an unjustified shooting and it looked like there was a deep pocket somewhere, I'd probably take in on 1/3. It would have to be a pretty sleazy lawyer to represent a plaintiff on contingency where the shooting was justified. Even a bottom feeder will realize that's not worth their time.

I've been thinking about just buying some land in rural Shelby or Fayette County so I can have my own little fun and gun, maybe one day build a house. Having your own place, or knowing some who does, is the only way to do it. The kind of dynamic, real-world drills and training I like to do are probably not accepted at most ranges. Would have to look into getting a berm put in and other legal/liability issues.

Multiple Unarmed Attackers/ Justifiable Homocide
Stegall Law Firm replied to a topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
That's a pretty long winded version you're using there. Try this: You need to have a reasonable belief of an immediate danger of death or serious bodily injury, to yourself or another. Period. That's about as simple as you can boil it down (and Tennessee law on use of deadly force is pretty simple). Whether you're justified to both is just going to depend on the facts. Like if they're both closing in on you, yeah, they're both good for it. But if one is further away (like maybe a getaway driver) and you go after him after taking care of the principal, when you really didn't need to, might be problematic. -
I practice more than my share of magazine changes, and I understand that the mag is the weakest link of an autoloading gun. You have to know how to manipulate your weapon and deal with mechanical failures. But without statistical evidence of civilians using multiple mags in a gun fight (and if you carry a gun for a living it may be a different story), I have to question the usefulness of this accessory. I think this goes in the category of cool but not really necessary. Cruel Hand Luke offers what I think is an excellent perspective on the mag change in this thread: And again, I do practice this stuff. I know what it's like to have the instructor behind me with the shot timer, the stress that's induced when you hear that beep and you're trying to shave tenths of a second off your par time. That's all well and good, but I train for real world street fights, not the Olympics.

.223 on sale at Cabela's
Stegall Law Firm replied to Chadastrophic's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Good deal, thanks. -
The micro's $100. I don't have one but that's not unreasonable to me. Maybe you're thinking one of the full sized rigs? I think if you don't carry a gun for a living you're probably looking at 75-100 for a good basic setup, and that'll cover most everything you need.

Is there a carbine class coming up at RUSA? And don't sweat the cost. You're done. Won't have to buy another one for a long time, if ever.

Recommendations for training in Memphis?
Stegall Law Firm replied to PolePosition's topic in Training Discussions
I second that. RM and RU are like the Coke and Pepsi of Memphis firearms training. We're very lucky to have Tom Givens here, who's a world-class expert in defensive pistol use. Now if you want to go where the insiders go, where it's a bit more intense, check out Ronin Strategies. They don't offer classes that often, but when they do it's not to be missed. They have a two-day pistol class coming up the first weekend in October. It's actually a private AR15.com class, but if you contact them they may let you in. roninstrategies.com
