  1. He said "less than what I paid for it."  I think that's pretty much what it means.  Tell you what, if that 22LR is in the "way less than what I paid" category, I'd hate to know what you did pay for it, lol. :woohoo:   But good luck on the sales and the move.
  2. On slickguns this has been up for five hours and is still available.  I'll take up golf before I pay that price, but it's encouraging that it can last that long without selling out.  Must crawl before we walk and all that.
  3. Bad week?  No not at all.  I helped out several clients with serious problems and signed up a few new ones.  Ammo-wise, several times this week I saw it for sale online at good prices and passed up on it.  I either don't need it or I'm pretty confident the price will be even lower in a month or so.  Not to sound elitist, but for these people who camp out at Walmart and such...dude I make 10 times more in an hour than you'll make waiting to buy and then resell that box of ammunition.  So while you're standing in line, I'm getting a good night's sleep, then going to work at a profession I love, making good money, and at my leisure I can check all the online ammo websites from the comfort of my home or office, and buy it for about the same price you did.  So go ahead, stand in line, drive around all day, but what you should really do is take that work ethic and put it into a marketable skill.
  4. Awesome.  Now be a winner and go resell that 22 for $50.  C'mon, think of all that hard work and time you put in, and the gas for driving, don't you want to make 20 bucks for it?? That's like 66% profit!!!  Screw the stock market I'm gonna be a professional ammo flipper.
  5. Looks like 54r finally caught up to the rest of the ammo world.  Back in Jan-Feb it would sit there for days and not sell out.  Now, a few hours.
  6. Copper's dropped nearly 10% since this happened (and most raw materials have gotten drubbed), therefore you can safely say it's a non-event.  That's how the market views it.  Long-term the price may go up, but right now there's plenty of copper out there and not much demand.
  7. Dang that's good.  Prices may not quite come down to where they were, but I think the magazine panic is officially over.  But not for ammo.   I wonder what the guy who paid $75 for Pmags is doing now.
  8. I've quit reading the New York Times because of its intolerable elitist, leftist views (and that took many years) but I came across this on another website and was very moved by it.  From some brief internet searching, it looks like this piece has been getting a good bit of talk in the financial and political world.    It is an unflinching, brutally honest account of our country's finances, and I was very surprised that the NY Times, the throne upon which the socialist Paul Krugman sits, published it.    With all-time highs in the Dow and S&P, I hear more and more talk of a market crash as the bill for our government's unlimited spending and printing of money comes due, and they are probably right.  But who knows when that will happen.  I could see this Federal Reserve-induced sugar high lasting for a good while longer.  Maybe years.  And it could be extended even further with Congressional deals and deferments.  Markets are not known for their rationality.    But as the Bard said, something is rotten in the state of Denmark.  This isn't news to most people here.  Prepare accordingly.   http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/31/opinion/sunday/sundown-in-america.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0#comments
  9. Well any fiction based on emp will be far fetched because there's no data to back it up.  It's pure speculation.  Nobody knows what would really happen.  I did just hear of a book about Yellowstone blowing up, that sounds interesting.  There's like a big-ass underground volcano out there.
  10. I missed the 223 but yesterday I bought 7.62 and 9 mil. Cabela's is a great place to get ammo when they have a sale. It goes fast but not in five minutes like some places. You actually have a chance to get it. Plus they usually have free or $5 shipping if you use your store card.
  11. Val Kilmer in Tombstone is one of the best examples of how an accent can make a performance.  Heath Ledger was really good at that too.
  12. This weekend I took a rifle class with Randy Harris (Cruel Hand Luke) down in Tunica, MS.  Randy is, in addition to being a pretty cool dude and not someone upon whom I would want to attempt a criminal act, a highly qualified instructor full of real-world, street-practical knowledge.  I've seen this in his posts here on TGO over the years, and that is what attracted me to his classes.  He did not disappoint in real life.  In short, I highly recommend seeking training from him. I truly think you'll come away with more tools to put in your box.   Because (I suspect) of current market conditions, we did not shoot a whole lot of ammo.  I shot maybe 400 rounds rifle and 25 pistol.  And this was a two-day class.  I was fine with this and it's even something Randy and I had talked about beforehand.  You don't need to shoot through a lot of rounds to learn how to run your weapon.   Saturday we worked on transitions to pistol, shooting on the move to both right and left, and magazine changes.  One drill we worked was standing close to the target, maybe 7 yards, and acquiring a nice even sight picture, then speeding it up by just looking over the top of the sight or optic.  We did this standing still then on the move.  I learned a lot by doing this moving to the left, and how to move my hands on the weapon to switch shoulders.   Sunday we continued shooting/moving drills, then worked into using cover and concluded with some great team drills incorporating communication and covering fire.    The weather was a challenge.  It was very windy both days and we kept having issues with the targets being blown down or just blown away.  Sunday was perfect Scottish golfing weather, about a 20-mph wind, steady rain, and temps in the 50's (which felt lower with the wind and rain).  Aside from the target issues, I liked the weather because of the difficulties it presented.    I kept my gear pretty simple and learned that what I have works pretty well.  Just a battle belt with a couple each pistol and rifle mags.  Rifle is in an MS3 sling which I really like.  One thing I do need is a dump pouch to put empty mags.  We discussed the realistic use of a rifle for civilian use.  Basically it's going to be either home defense or a short-term, regional event that might disrupt power, law and order, and the generally thin veneer we call society.  In a situation like that you might want to get in the habit of retaining your mags.  I always thought I could use my pockets but that doesn't work too well under stress I found out.  So I'll be looking for a dump pouch.   I got a lot out of this class, especially using cover, transitioning shoulders and moving to the left.  A lot that I can now work through on my own. Randy has great personality for teaching, very real, not wooden, and very knowledgeable and organized.  He puts things in a real-world, civilian perspective.    Go train with him, you won't be disappointed.
  13. I will put BSL on my short list.  I ordered some bullets from Missouri Bullet Company and they are about the same price.  But MBC is not as fast.
  14. I think it's pretty safe to say lead will never get anywhere near the price of silver.  Caster is just in a totally different universe than most of us when it comes to ammo.
  15. I'm good enough not to have to pay these ridiculous prices or go to Walmart at 6 in the morning.  A couple times recently I paid more than what I used to but it wasn't too much more.  I do have a low threshold, unlike apparently a lot of people out there.    You know what I've been buying more of recently?  Silver.  It's at some of the lowest prices we've seen in 18 months, and you don't have to go to the store at 6am to buy it or watch it get sold out online in 15 minutes.  Maybe when it goes to $75 an ounce I can sell it to the same idiots who are paying $75 for a brick of 22.
  16. Not in a gun store.  Like, on the street.  I was on my usual morning commute to the office, about 7.30 this morning, and I was making my way up 2nd Street in downtown Memphis.  I saw traffic up at the next intersection start to get bunched up, then a large truck, might've been an 18 wheeler, turns right from the cross street in front of everybody then stops halfway through the turn and is taking up a couple lanes.  2nd St. is three lanes wide, one way going south.    Then a white SUV comes through the intersection from the same direction as the large truck and stops right in the middle.  The driver gets out and he starts motioning for all the oncoming southbound traffic (me) to turn left.  We can't go straight, we all have to turn.  He's wearing a police/security looking uniform but I'm not sure if it was MPD.  He had on a lime green traffic vest.  The SUV was unmarked.    And he got out carrying an AR15.  Whoa, I said.  I'm getting out of here.  I would be lying if I said the thought of a "Heat" style shootout about to happen didn't cross my mind.  Don't mean to sound like an anti-gun person, but an AR is just not something that you want, or at least expect to see openly in an American, urban, downtown setting.  This was just a couple blocks away from federal court and city hall.  I see these types of guns all the time when I go to Colombia (mostly Galils, actually) but here we enjoy a little more stability.   I made the turn, had to take a detour, and the last few blocks to the office I was half-expecting to see police cars whizzing by, maybe a news chopper, but nothing.  So I've been wondering all day what it could've been.  On that intersection sits the Memphis branch of the St. Louis federal reserve; maybe it had something to do with that.  Maybe a dignitary?  Who knows.  I just thought it was unusual for the guy directing traffic to have an AR.  Makes you wonder what was up ahead.  What do y'all think?  Is this standard op in certain situations? All in all it made an otherwise extremely mundane commute pretty interesting.
  17. All metals have been down the last few months.  Could be less industrial demand due to economic uncertainty (but that's not stopping the Dow or S&P), could just be that the gold bull market is coming to an end or just taking a breather.  I bought some $100 boxes of nickels at the bank in 2011, and I think the highest it got on coinflation was $142.  So that was a nice, brief, theoretical 42% return.   Eventually, when they debase the nickel, the prices of the old ones will go up.  But that could take a while.  But nickels aren't a bad buy and hold small-time investment.  I may buy some more, but personally I prefer silver.  Those nickels are just so bulky.    A while back there was a story about one of the guys who made a shitload in the housing market crash, he was one of the few who saw it coming and took opposite (short) positions on the credit default swaps.  He literally became a billionaire out of it.  He had made a huge purchase of nickels, like several tons.
  18. Herter's brass cased 40 S&W, $18 for 50, $5 shipping if you have a Cabella's Visa.  First saw it earlier this morning and it's still in stock, which is surprising.    http://www.cabelas.com/product/Shooting/Ammunition/Handgun-Ammunition|/pc/104792580/c/104691780/sc/104372280/Herters-Select-Grade-Handgun-Ammunition/1305056.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Fshooting-ammunition-handgun-ammunition%2F_%2FN-1100189%2B4294756900%2FNe-4294756900%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_104372280%3FWTz_l%3DSBC%253BMMcat104792580%253Bcat104691780%26WTz_st%3DGuidedNav%26WTz_stype%3DGNU&WTz_l=SBC%3BMMcat104792580%3Bcat104691780%3Bcat104372280
  19. That brings down the value of it but these have a detachable magazine, unlike most milsurps like the Mosin Nagant where the mag is fixed.  I guess it's not uncommon on some of those Swiss rifles for the magazine to go missing.  Another thing that makes these rifles unusual is that even though it's detachable, you're supposed to load it top down like the fixed magazine guns.  So don't take it out.  And that way it won't get lost!   I'd make sure that the lack of magazine is reflected in the price.
  20. If you like interesting military surplus rifles and it's a good price, get it.  They are really neat.  And ask the seller if the trooper tag is under the buttplate.  If they don't know just get a screwdriver and find out.  And get a few cases of that ammo too, unless you plan on reloading for it.
  21. Swiss, not Swedes.  Considered one of the finest, most accurate milsurps out there.  They've kind of dried up, though surplus ammo is still available (which is also excellent).  Someone more knowledgeable will be able to tell you the difference between K11s and 31s, but they're both straight pull and I believe they both fire the 7.5mm.   I have a K31 and bought it a few years ago for 250.  Prices are probably a good bit more now, maybe 400-ish.
  22. It says 450 on the website but 400 in your post. Was that just a typo on your part?
  23. I was very close to buying some myself but backed off.  Been hitting up the reload components pretty hard lately, plus silver is dipping.  But the 'net was about bursting at the seams today with decent ammo deals.

  25. Jeez Louise!  Don't people know how to search anymore?  This question was just asked a few days ago, and gets asked every week on the 300,000 other gun forums out there.  We were all new once, but I wish more new folks would realize that every possible question they could think of has already been asked, answered, and discussed many times.  Every one.  You were not the first one to think of that question.  Internet's a big place.  And if you're having trouble with the forum search menu, just use Google.  Always works.
