  1. Glock 27 - my first carry weapon. I recommend taking class with your intended carry weapon, though anything will do.
  2. You know, at $1,000 per "tip", the brilliant folks in NJ could probably just announce a buyback program and pay folks what their stuff is worth. But wait, it's not about getting guns off the street, it's about reporting in on what your neighbor is up to...
  3. Never had a "live" self-defense situation, but I have had a couple of occasions I was extremely happy I had it. You don't buy insurance hoping that you're going to really use it, but you have it in case a bad day comes around. One person, standing in the gap, can be the difference between good and evil prevailing.
  4. If I ever bought the slide fire stock, it'd be with a .22 conversion kit. I don't think I want to blow 20-30 cents a round just for the thrill of seeing brass fly. I can get just as much "thrill" at a couple pennies per shot. By the way, if you're REALLY considering dropping that kind of cash for a RDIAS or FA, why not just buy up ammo instead? In times of economic crisis or a huge jump in materials prices, not only will your investment be safe, you can get your money back a little at a time. And just try extracting your cash in a pinch if you needed to sell the weapon quick...
  5. I don't see how they could be perceived at anti-2nd amendment at all. How many times have they used firearms as part of the show? And blowing stuff up to boot? How many whiny antis do you see blowing up cement trucks just for kicks? Just sayin'.
  6. That normal "hard" look is missing from the crook's face. Isn't he supposed to be proud of being picked up by the police? EDIT: I'm sure the bruises came while the struggle was taking place.... certainly not while he was being restrained.
  7. If it came back hot, the officer or FFL who ran it for you will want to know where the number came from. That's just a whole 'nother can of worms you don't want to open up. If your seller isn't ok with the idea of coming along, pass on it. It's your expense, not his - what's he got to lose (except hot merchandise)? The bottom line here is that the process may not be perfect, with the stolen gun database perhaps not always being up to snuff, but you'll have a government-approved clean bill of health AND peace of mind.
  8. REALLY great story, even if it does come from the NYT. Supplier Under Scrutiny on Arms for Afghans - New York Times
  9. Take it to a dealer and ask for them to do a transfer to you on a form 4473. If the gun's serial number checks out, then you're good to go. If the price is THAT low, you have at least $35 in savings to spend. Don't pay the seller until the weapon passes muster. If he is not open to all of this, the probability of the weapon checking out is not worth your time or money. EDIT: What is he selling and how much? There's a line between someone in hard times and someone flipping hot merchandise.

    AR lowers

Dolomite, Which brands are painting their lowers? I sure don't want 'em in my hands.

    AR lowers

It's a nice extra and it's something that is on the lowers I've been using to build. Now that I'm spoiled on it, and can build without having the buttstock assembly in hand, I don't want to go without it. I respect your statement that it's not a bona fide criteria for a quality lower and I agree with you. It's just nice to have. As far as finish quality (and I don't know if this even happens), you should have an anodized lower, as opposed to painted. I don't know if paint is used by anyone in the AR market these days. I saw an episode of Sons of Guns where that shop painted a weapon, as opposed to other types of finish (anodize, parkerize, chrome plate, etc).

    AR lowers

You can't go wrong with most lowers on the market today. Ignore name plates, unless that company literally produced the product themselves. Look for quality of machining, proper finish quality, and threading for a set screw at the takedown pin spring. Retailers will take all the money you're willing to give them, but a good quality lower is within reach of ANY budget these days. Buy a couple and have fun building your dream gun.
  13. Change the venue to some other part of the state and then try them as a group.
  14. If you carry every single day, why on earth would you unload once you get home? The extreme lack of logic here is astounding.
  15. The original case boiled my blood when it was first publicized. The thought of a re-trial just boils it all over again. If you are re-tried and have a chance at walking away without a conviction, you should also have a chance at getting a heavier penalty than the first go-round. Whether a person wants to roll the dice should be up to the individual in question. I am with Dolomite. Review the cases for potential judicial missteps before issuing court dates. Finally, try them as a group. All involved are either guilty as a whole or not guilty for anything. No matter how little or how big a role any single individual played, any of them could have stopped it and ALL of them contributed to the result. Justice for all or justice for none. God rest the victims souls and grant restraint to the victims families if those scumbags ever get out of prison.
  16. Clearly, it's not charity work. If it walks like an armed guard and talks like an armed guard, then it is an armed guard. Need the license accordingly; the employer - for any length of time - has to go through way more paperwork than its worth.
  17. The obvious winners? Taxpayers.
  18. Sensei Dolomite, we await your wisdom. I will say this much: my first couple of ARs hooked me on the platform. Then, I started building lowers. I am far from mechanically inclined and I can do it without instruction after one try. Building is very enjoyable and will teach you a LOT about your weapon. For me, building an upper from scratch is more troublesome and not worth the frustration. To each their own... at some point, I'll probably build an upper from scratch. Go at your own pace and most importantly, enjoy whatever you choose to do.
  19. So there I was, reading about FMJ vs JHP and worrying about hitting some innocent bystander.... then I read this. I laughed out loud. Easily the Post of the Day! Becaaaaaaaaaaause with any luck, my choice of carry round will dump ALL of its energy into its intended target. Not only do I not want to hit any other person/object, my primary objective is to incapacitate said target.
  20. Is it up to a judge that a shooting was justified? Does the DA rule a justifiable shoot, or just decline to prosecute? If the DA rules it justified, I'd think a person could take that letter into court, along with citation of the law, and act as their own attorney and ask for dismissal on those grounds. The questions above would clearly point us in the right direction.
  21. After a second look at the law, a justifiable shoot results in immunity from civil liability, not the suit itself. As DaveTN pointed out, you will receive yours lawyer's fees and costs back from a plaintiff who sues unsuccessfully. One would also receive compensation for lost wages/time. Last but not least, as DaveTN correctly pointed out, one does not require a HCP to receive these legal protections. I stand corrected and appreciate DaveTN's help in bringing it to light.
  22. Here's my thought: If you have time for one and only one shot and your life or your beloved's life is on the line: Do you want a FMJ or JHP hitting your target?

    GLOCK 30 FOR CARRY

Good choice for carry. G30SF is the way to go, if you have the option between a G30 or G30SF. I EDC a 19 in a Supertuck.... as JohnnyFox said, G30+Supertuck can't be beat.
  24. +1, as always The principal difference in this scenario with HCP/no HCP is this: HCP gives you statutory immunity from civil suit. No HCP = no statutory immunity. The cost of the permit/class alone are worth the no-lawsuit clause.
  25. Get the G19 or even a G26. The choice of accessories/holsters is wide, re-sale market is very good, and you can even wash it in your dishwasher to boot. You can also use the next-size-up in magazine capacity, which is something I have always appreciated about the platform. If you buy it and don't like it, you can get your money back as long as you didn't overpay to begin with.
