  1. Sections of: Knoxville, Chattanooga, Nashville? New York, Chicago, Philadelphia? I believe it's any high population density urban area where the local underground economy is driven by and supported through illegal and criminal activity.
  2. I like Bud's; have bought firearms and accessories, shoot there regularly, and the staff is pretty good. Go here BEFORE you visit SMKW, otherwise you may be underwhelmed. Bud's is a large gun store with competitive, if not great prices. SMKW is a destination that happens to have a good selection of guns, ammo, and accessories. I've been in dozens of times over the years for ammo purchases only, I still enjoy looking around.
  3. I did consider, but I wasn't willing to invest in running wire for exterior or attic mount. Challenge is signal travels SE towards my house, the TV is in the far main floor SE corner. Couldn't be better shielded unless I moved it down to the basement.
  4. Can't get the Leaf situated. Enrolled in Hulu plus Live $44.99 month Programming is similar to an upgraded cable package, which I pay ATT $172 including taxes and fees. Hope to maintain my internet at $50 Net savings will be $100 per month.
  5. Sure you do, it's simply expanding on the Golden Rule. Happy Father's Day to you, Doug!
  6. Custer's last words? Actually, the difference between 5.11 and TruSpec. When not working, I am usually wearing tacti-cool pants. To the casual observer, with no other operator-like clothing or logo'd apparel and top siders, more like ubiquitous cargo pants. Add a button down shirt, patterned sport coat and nice shoes, you'd be surprised how dressy the effect can be. I started with 5.11, traded some ammo for two pairs 5 years ago. 34" waist, gave me +1/2" plus the stretch band for AIWB. Still have those pants, still serviceable. Cuffs and seams are not frayed and they have some stains. Did not follow care instructions, so never turned inside out to wash. This probably washed out the Teflon faster than normal. Bought a third pair, $49.99 everywhere. Have since lost some weight and switched to OWB, can still cinch down the 34s without excess fabric gathering. Strolling through SMKW, I see Tru-Spec, $39.95. For $10 cheaper, I'll try out a blue pair. Belt loops in slightly different positions, stretchy part is hidden within the band, all the pockets have Velcro fasteners. Wore the Tru-Specs to a carbine class in the rain. 1. The Teflon did an amazing job of repelling water. I assume equal performance with a fresher pair of 5.11s 2. Discovered the large cargo pockets are subdivided, so I was easily able to stow and move with 4 - 30 round .30cal carbine mags. 3. The front pocket slash is slightly smaller than the 5.11s 4. Depending on what your activity is, each has benefits. 5.11 with large front and rear pocket slashes make it easy to access and stow extra mags or gear. Tru-Spec allows for secure storage, but not as easy to access the flapped and Velcro'd back pockets. I also have better access for front pocket carry with the 5.11s
  7. Welcome to the group!
  8. The narrative is white LE is systematically targeting and killing black men. Rail on, "well, it is Memphis." Wonder if people GA, CA, or IL say, "well it is Atlanta, South Central, Chicago." While my personal habits won't change a thing, I'm a middle-aged white guy who wears a suit, if approached by LE, they're going to see my empty hands with no sketchy body language.
  9. It's a new TGO thing. The day before Father's Day to celebrate the men, married and single, whose behavior is an example of leadership. I strive to be a gentleman, it seems a reflection of behavior God expects from me. According to Wiki, a man of good am courteous conduct. Wiki, Gentleman by Conduct: This use develops through the centuries until 1710, when we have Steele, in Tatler (No. 207), laying down that "the appellation of Gentleman is never to be affixed to a man's circumstances, but to his Behaviour in them," a limitation over-narrow even for the present day Could someone explain why this statement is "a limitation over-narrow even for the present day." Shouldn't one rise above his circumstances vs. adapt to them as a chameleon? Act the gentleman depending on your audience? Hypocrisy? urban Dictionary addresses some specific points: Educated - Partially, but I engage in continuing education, professionally and personally. Well dressed - I'm neat and clean, unless ill and bedridden, shower and shave daily. Well spoken - Mostly, though the art of uttering horrific strings of profanity can still exit my mouth. Scholarly - hope I am well informed on topics I contribute to and listen and learn from topics I don't. https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Gentleman Being a gentleman has ZERO bearing on background, education, socio-economic standing, the clothes that you wear, it's a mindset with daily wins and losses. Don't get discouraged, it's a marathon, not a sprint!
  10. We call it leeway for builders...
  11. Seems pretty happy being muzzled by a street sweeper. Finger in the trigger guard?
  12. I understand YoY forecasting, but unless something dramatically changes on the political level, many gun owners are reaching saturation levels and being more selective when adding new stuff. I assume the firearm, ammo and accessory manufacturers are slowing production, but it takes time. They missed a lesson from the car business, it's cyclical. I think they assumed it'll never stop. I'll keep me eye out for even cheaper ammo opportunities
  13. Regarding the area, no idea if a hotbed of civil disobedience, my best guess, bored kids riding down your driveway looking for opportunity. Stout motion detecting lights, both house and remote would probably deter all but the most determined. I would also assume once you get to know and trust your neighbors, they'll keep an eye on your homestead, likely to notice strange vehicles or unusual traffic
  14. DaveTN = shop your realtor, check. Found this link using "home builders in Sparta" SPARTAAAA!!!!! https://www.houzz.com/professionals/home-builders/c/Sparta--TN In more rural TN areas, you will find the good contractors are not necessarily keeping current on Google reviews and have more basic websites. Good luck with your search. Is a prefab on permanent foundation with or without basement an option? They're not the single and double wide models of years past.
  15. I was exiting I-26 at Johnson City on Wednesday and noticed a guy; homeless, God bless, scribed in marker on a mostly square piece of cardboard. I am the only car on the double exit ramp. Professional panhandler, guy down on his luck with little to no hope, or someone else? I had already decided to help, my duty is to serve, not decide who gets the service. Dig into my pocket, President Jackson, Lincoln, and 2 Washingtons Fold up Mr. Jackson, roll down my window, "hey buddy, I'd like to help you out." I am pretty sure he's not a threat, no obvious weapons or tools, other than that piece of cardboard, first in line, so I can step on it if I misjudged intent. As I roll down my window, I re-observe this guy. Appears to be oh-so-slightly shifting weight from left to right and his lips were moving and wasn't any close enough to have a conversation. Slip the gift into his hand, "thank you, God bless you," with a smile. As he is walking back to his spot, he looks down and discovers the denomination. As he looks back at me, tears are beginning to stream down his face. More vehicles are now exiting and approaching the red light, the man turns away from the road to gain his composure. Lord, thank you for showing me how I made a difference in someone's life. Thank you for answering my prayers to be your obediant servant and serve as your hands and feet. Thank you for rewarding me in mind, heart, soul, and pocket for being a faithful steward of the blessings you place in my care.

  17. I didn't see the excitement at $99 - $149
  18. It has arrived! Shooter condition. Bluing on barrel is like new except for wear at muzzle and a few surface scratches. Receiver is worn, has a great patina from 60 years of handling, and bluing fades back in about 1/2 of the way up and over the top. I think the case hardening pattern in the lever is beautiful. Leupold VX2 - 7 x 33 with fancy flip caps, oh so clear and non distorted. Cheek weld is fine at 2, when I start zooming, I have to move my head a bit. Inspecting the innards through the ejection port, I think this rifle has a low round count - not much if any visible wear including the breech face. The action is smooth and it does satisfy my desire for a level gun. I think the trigger is fine, when I shoot I'll figure out if it is good. The actual trigger itself is wide, serrated, and smooth with virtually no take up and clean break. .300 Savage has an interesting history as does the 99, which is also appealing to my ecletic sensibilities. I do have both the ladder and rear peep sights as well.
  19. Last weekend I drive to the Ridge in Dayton, TN to assist and participate in Defensive Concepts for Low Light Environments. Randy Harris, founder of Harris Combative Strategies was our instructor. Class start was 6pm, we had 15 students, including 3 ladies. Having never shot at night, i was looking forward to it. No fancy gear, my trusty CZ 75B with 10 year old OEM night sights, Safariland accordion-style universal single mag pouch (works like a champ) and new Fenix UC35 flashlight with up to 1000 retinal burning lumens. This particular flashlight was $89.95 at SMKW, selected based on previous experience with the LD05, on board USB charger, and 2 battery choices. I am NOT a light expert, so this is opinion. A good flashlight runs $60+ depending on features. A good flashlight makes for an excellent striking weapon or use to break glass. Combination of classroom and range work. Here's what I learned: It is not illegal anywhere in the world to carry a flashlight in your hand. As a rule, people don't like to get flashed, so a blast of light from waist down with a firm, "I'm sorry, I can't help you," should be pretty effective. For me, I get to see his hands For him, I've added a huge question, who carries and uses a flashlight? At the very least, not your typical antelope. If unable to disengage, a blast to the eyes, with, "hey buddy back off," gives about 2-3 seconds of time before the potential bad guy has clear vision. To know is from experience, so we all got blasted in low light, but not dark - that was later. If a light blast to the eyes doesn't dissuade the predator, and he's close, strike him in the face with that well made, machined aluminum with fantastic gripping surfaced cylinder of hurt. Sounds really John Wick like, but really a simple gross motor skill. Then it was dark and time to shoot. I discovered there was enough ambient light from the other shooters illuminating their targets, I didn't really need more light. I also discovered positioning the light is important to avoid losing my front sight from splash along the top of the slide. Other musings When I would step to the rear to hydrate, I was about 25 yards from the firing line. As 8 students were shooting and flash illuminating at different tempos, it was chaotic to experience. Point being, a running gun battle at night is scary. I came to the realization that I've been approaching this shooting thing the hard way; day light, two hands, can easily see the target. 10 yards, move to cover, engage strong hand, flashlight however you want to manage it, 6" steel, don't hit the bystander or The Suit. Ding Ding ding Ding ding ding Ding ding ding (Randy didn't say exactly how many) ding. I'm also pleased with my overall progress with slide lock reloads. If nothing else, a fun confidence booster. Feedback from the class: start earlier due to volume of content, convert dry erase to PowerPoint for classroom. Last drill, a little after midnight, only ambient is starlight, no moon, and it's dark in Dayton. After I flash you in the face, when you can see the target, draw and fire. I'd estimate 20-30 seconds in my case and almost a minute for full night vision. Tremendous amount of time to do a variety of things. Tips from Randy: Turn off the lights when practicing dry and add your light. Hit a mirror to experience what the BG will experience in different light levels. I am an unpaid spokesperson and talented valet for Randy Harris and Harris Combative Strategies.
  20. Your number one job is to run towards gunfire and stop the threat. Then fulfill the traditional role. Dave is right, filling with a less than optimal candidate, is playing the odds and hoping it doesn't happen. It may be a deterrent, but not a threat to a determined attacker. Engaging in a gunfight with the good possibility of students in the foreground and background, get these officers some additional training.
  21. Noticed that as well. Used the handy crowbar key conveniently left on the porch to pry the flimsy frame. I guess a ladder was left pretty accessible for second story work if ground floor was more secure. Alarm dog as well. As to your bias, because I am no longer single nor party like a rockstar in my bachelor pad, I too, felt disdain for the apparent lack of basic housekeeping. Lots of what ifs...and I've done worse. To your point, there are some less than desireable neighborhoods off Clinton Highway
  22. Which is why "must" is the only question that you need to answer. I will return home each day under my own power and my loved ones will be protected from violence while I am present. That's when must enters the equation, because carrying a firearm is a lesson in humility when those factors do not apply. I know I can and if it's my circus and my monkeys (Randy Harris) should is pretty obvious.
  23. Missed this as we don't follow much local news. "Suspect fled when confronted" Everybody got lucky. From the video, BG was ready to use the crowbar as he came around the corner and headed down the hall. Appears enough ambient light, the homeowner should be able to identify he didn't have a Bible in his hands. Homeowner didn't get brained, BG didn't get shot. Starts an interesting rhetorical questions for the gun owner, attributed to Lee Weems Can I shoot? A question of ability. Should I shoot? A question of morality. May I shoot? A question of (legal) permission. In this case, assuming you cause no damage or injury to your neighbors, you should be legally protected. Despite the media re-labeling home invaders as "unwanted visitors" The final imperative is, must I shoot? A dude kicks in my door, knowing I'm home and has a weapon in his hands, it will probably be easy for law enforcement to locate him. We use this best practice: lock bedroom door, have cell handy, and be ready. I've got insurance and stuff is replaceable. If you've got kids and need to gain a better defensive position, keep you plan simple and maintain perfect muzzle and trigger discipline.
  24. On the fed level, didn't the laughter begin with Ollie and Iran-Contra and continue through every admin to date, devolving to include the dreaded, "found in contempt of Congress" If it weren't on the tax payer dime, it'd be free entertainment
