1911 Metro Arms American Classic Commander
A.J. Holst replied to A.J. Holst's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
Haven't had a chance to shoot it again, but I have been hand cylcing ALOT with no issues. Aside from a good cleaning and moly-lube, one thing DS did do was to square up the notches on hammer where the sear seats (sorry if I am using the wrong terms for parts - my first 1911) After measuring with his micrometer, he discovered they were slightly out of square. -
done!

Since you posted in long guns, what about a Ruger 10/22? Cheap to shoot, reliable and zillions of bolt-ons to build anything from a varmint sniper rifle to the most tacti-cool plinker that would make the most jaded Mall Ninja drool. With $500, you could buy two base models, a his and hers...

My buddy bought a Dan Wesson based on his experience with his CZ-75. It's a great 1911 right out of the box. To confirm Warbird's comments - buddy paid around $800 about a year ago, same gun now is $1100 - $1200. From your list, it looks like you are in the higher-end price point; you make want to check out the Fusion line. Same buddy just got a long-slide 1911 in 10mm, virtually a custom build for around $1600.

Dolomite Supafly and TGO!!! Met with DS today and he fixed my AC 1911 Commander A little tweaking, grease and 2000 grit sandpaper and we are good to go. Even had a chance to run some rounds through (yes, he has a range on property) - trouble free operation. Without his help and the TGO network, I would have been sending it in under warranty wondering when I would be getting it back. Great forum, GREAT members!!!

Just bought my wife a Walther P22 and she is pretty excited. What RN and HP .22LR do you recommend? Thanks

Dolomite - PM sent. I would have no issues replacing the parts as you suggest; I too am planning to use it as a carry gun. Thanks! GtG -
Are Fragibles any good at all for Self Defense?
A.J. Holst replied to MikePapa1's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Isn't that stuff pretty expensive to run enough rounds through your gun to make sure it feeds reliably (assuming a semi-auto) -
Bought it new on Sunday. Performed basic cleaning. Had a chance to shoot 8 rounds through it today. 230gr Remington UMC First 7 rounds, no issues at all. On the 8th round, as the slide returned to fire position (back to battery?) the hammer did not stay fully cocked, but traveled to the 1/2 cock position. Cleared the round, hand cycled the slide with empty magazine. About every 8 to 10 cycles, upon releasing the slide stop, the hammer does not stay in the fully cocked position, but travels to the 1/2 cock position. I know I am still in a break-in period, but this is somewhat unexpected. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Man wards off Sexual Offender with shots fired.

As crime moves farther south down Chapman, our quiet little subdivision in Seymour is becoming more BG unfriendly. All my immediate neighbors are now armed and dangerous. -
American Classic II, PICTURE HEAVY **56K BEWARE**
A.J. Holst replied to Dolomite_supafly's topic in Handguns
I bought an AC Commander at the Knox gun show yesterday, very pleased with the fit; jury's out on the finish as it is just new. It is my first 1911. I researched both RIA and AC; the AC has a few more features over a RIA GI for a nominal increase in price. The RIA "tacticals" appear to be harder to find and price seems to be a bit higher than an equivalent AC. I couldn't find a RIA Commander at all, none at the gun show nor the brand-name on-line retailers. I did a basic breakdown and cleaning, didn't fully strip it as you did, but other than heavy oil, no metal shavings, etc on the internals. My feed ramp appears to be a little "rougher" on the leading edge than yours. The only thing I plan on is adding an ambi-safety, being a southpaw shooter. 1911 QUESTION --- I have heard you use grease as opposed to gun oil on the slide; what kind of grease??? My $.02 regarding the Officer / Compact question, I didn't like the grip as it is just short enough to be uncomfortable. I carry either a SP101 or P95 at the 10 - 11 o'clock postion with an untucked shirt, the commander 1911 is similar in size and I have no printing issues due to the grip size of the Rugers. -
Visited their booth at the Knoxville Gun Show yesterday; Great folks to work with, prices were very competitive and still willing to negotiate. Joined the 1911 club, walked away with a Metro Arms American Classic Commander. No pics yet, my camera is down down and out... My NIB LCR is going up for sale!!!

Looking for the overall dimension per model. Full Size Commander Compact Basic pros/cons of each size? I have also seen designations of: "G.I." which appears to be the classic (and basic), low sighted 1911 "Tactical" which seems to have improved sights, trigger, hammer and bob Thanks!

Here is what is so cool about the whole deal: "one of my customer's came in and gave me a gift" You are running your business the right way to build that kind of relationship with your clients. Keep up the GREAT work and congrats on your new toy!

How much ammo do you carry for EDC?
A.J. Holst replied to Backon4's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
5 in the SP101 + 2 speed loaders in the truck for local commuting 15 in the P95 + 15 in the spare mag + the SP and 2 speed loaders when traveling. -
I have used the Kholster, High Noon Hidden Ally and Don Hume #52 (Pocket) for my SP101. The Kholster is the most comfortable of the three.

I am getting ready to sell my NIB Ruger LCR and want to replace it with a RIA 1911. Does anyone know who is carrying them in the greater Knoxville area?

Head on over to gunbroker.com Search for your particular firearm and you should get a range of price points as a guide for evaluation. This would give you a starting point before going to a gun show and getting lowballed. Another cool place I found is armslist.com, like craigslist, only for guns. I sold a rifle a while back and got a fair price from a knowledgeable buyer. Be careful when selling on-line! Don't invite an unknown potential buyer to your home, meet in a public place! As a side note, please review the locked thread regarding "how much is my gun worth" There are some other great search options listed for firearm eval.

Worst gun for me was a Colt King Cobra, 6" bull barrel. Nothing wrong with the gun, it was the shooter! I was never able to get comfortable with the grip angle.

For the most part the TWRA officers are pretty gun friendly, since they are around hunters / sportsmen on a regular basis. If you are boarded by TWRA, if it is an obvious SD weapon you are good to go. A scoped out rifle or hunting-type pistol - you may have some 'splainin to do' As far as the traditional marine LEO, don't know, never had it come up in my years of boating on Ft Loudon / Tellico / Watts Bar

Like many, I don't look for the "No Gunz Allowed" sign, though ignorance is not a valid a defense. After hiking 2 miles across a parking lot and seeing an obvious sign on the door, I will honor their request or policy on my thrid visit. Why third? Because my first visit counts as two - my first and last. Isn't a NGA sign an advertisement for a BG with a gun as a safe place to commit an act of armed robbery?

Can one quallify for a HCP with a 22 revolver?
A.J. Holst replied to a topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Back in the day, didn't everyone pretty much learn to shoot with a 22 revolver / 22 rifle? That's how I learned which prepared me to move on up in caliber... -
I don't own a C9, but have shot a few. My neighbor doesn't carry, his C9 is a night table gun. He has run 1000 rounds through it with no malfunctions of any kind using different brands of ammo, both HP and FMJ. As far a carrying a HP, size-wise it's comparable to alot of other 9's. Regarding weight, if I was going that heavy, I would probably look for something with larger mag capacity. I carry an SP101, so weight doesn't really bother me. HP quality and reliability - I do have a 995 carbine with tacti-cool ATI stock (Mall Ninja in training) and have had hours of failure-free fun.

I am an IWB guy, 10:30 - 11:00 position (left-handed shooter), either an LCR in a Kholster or SP101 2.25" in a High Noon Hidden Ally. I have always worn a t-shirt under my "work" shirt, so the extra layer of clothing has never bothered me, even with the summer we are having now. The Kholster is a full pancake, so with no undershirt, leather against skin. The SP rides pretty low in the HA, so mainly the grip would be against bare skin. I wear my shirts untucked 95% of the time, but both of these holsters are advertised as "tuckable"

Ended up with the 5.11 1.5" Casual Leather, $22.00 + tax. I couldn't take advantage of $4.95 sale, too small! Pros - good looking belt, imprinted as "all leather", handles the weight of the SP in a High Noon Hidden Ally very well (no sagging) Cons - made in China
