The last couple years I have been able to keep lettuce and spinach almost all year without a greenhouse or any covering. in the mild winter year before last we had fresh lettuce all winter long without me covering it once. It's awesome to go out and pick you a big ol salad for Christmas dinner! Just because i want to try it I have some old tomato cages i no longer use that i plan on cutting loose, rolling out and the rolling up long ways to make a frame then covering with plastic and using rebar to hold it down. I'll run a soaker hose through in case i need to water and then mulch with straw. I figure i can roll the plastic up and reach in through the gaps in the concrete wire to pick. I honestly think you could leave the plastic off lettuce most of the winter except for when it's going to be very cold for a few days straight. A little frost doesn't hurt it or spinach too much. To me fall and winter is definitely the time to grow lettuce and spinach. It's very simple.

Pee mmm! Technically there isn't safe guidelines for canning squash if you go by recent published info. So I freeze squash. I like canning stuff though. Then i can fill the freezer with critter meat.

Btw not gardening but Breeden's Orchard in Mt Juliet has some real good pick your own peaches for $1 a lb. they had some that just came in and were loaded this past Sunday and I swung in there and picked half a bushel and was outta there in about 10 minutes. I canned them last night.

I'll join in. So far my pole beans did ok I've canned about 20 qts of green beans and ate some. Gonna can some more tomorrow. I got about 3, 5 gallon buckets of potatoes. Round 1 of squash got annihilated by vine borers but I saved a couple of plants to have some for eating. So much for my try at limiting my insecticide use. Maybe I'll get some for freezing on round 2. Theyre bout a foot tall. My tomatoes are finally getting red. I planted about 30 tomates including some heirlooms we acquired from one of my dads customers, (he called them Minnie Bussel as thats the old womans name he got the seed from originally. We call them "those maters we got from Smith") either way they're big, ugly, and red, and damn good. They have pretty good disease resistance and at this point I'm really just trying to maintain the variety. My spring broccoli did pretty good. Gonna plant more plus cabbage again for fall. Pulled about 6 dozen ears of corn on my first go round. Got another couple rows that'll be ready in a few days but it ain't gonna be as good. Didn't plant cucumbers this year. I made 2 years worth of pickles last year and I don't like eating them fresh so I'll grow some for pickles next year. Okra is growing. Sweet potatoes are going crazy up top. Not sure what's going on underground. Pulled some decent carrots today so my wife can feed some to our 10 month old. They were bigger than I thought. Probably pull the rest in a week or so. At this point I'm waiting on peas, winter squash, and my second summer squash. I planted some bush beans and more pole beans too. When the corns gone I'll prep that area for turnip greens. I plant something and when its done or declines i pull it and plant something else. Lettuce and spinach can last a lot longer than most realize. If you start it in Sept you can be eating salad at Thanksgiving and sometimes Christmas or like year before last, all year. I have about a 40'x60' main garden, a 10'x20' spot i usually plant lettuce and spinach in (right now i rotated in peas and our halloween punkin in it), a 10'x30' strip behind the shed, a 15'x10' raised strawberry bed ( had some bare spots so i planted okra in it) a bed with herbs, a couple blueberry bushes, and a coulple blackberry canes. I'm considering tearing down my shed and rebuilding it as shed with attached greenhouse. We've always been big on gardening in my family. My uncle grows and sells vegetables at his place up in Gallatin and he has a 50' greenhouse. my dad always kept all this stuff here planted I just do what he did. My grandaddy had a pretty big yard and the entire back from fence to fence was garden. my aunt told me my granny used to say that she expected to come home one day and he'd be tilling up out front. If ours was more level it'd be the same way.

Anyone see the Wilson County student packet?
JWC replied to Bill4282's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
I personally know 2 board members. I believe both would think someone is a jackass for sending out this paper. I've lived in MJ for 35 of 36 years (had a Lebanon address for a year in like 1999) My opinion is this is just the degradation of Mt. Juliet by the massive influx of yankees and yuppie vaginas. But yeah someone oughta have to catch some hell for this so they don't send this crap out again. -
How do you hide gun/or accy purchases from the wife or GF?
JWC replied to Dustbuster's topic in General Chat
I don't hide stuff. We're both responsible spenders so if I buy something she knows I need it and I either bought it used or shopped around for the best price and we can afford it. We don't make a lot so we both stay on top of our spending. If I want to make a larger purchase (such as a gun) I work some OT and I save my lawnmower sales/repair money, grass cutting money, and fishing tournament money until I can buy it. The only way we'd say anything to each other about buying an item is if it was on credit as that would mean we can't actually afford it in cash at time of purchase. Beings we don't even have any kind of credit cards or credit accounts to even buy stuff with, i guess that's not a concern. -
I believe if you had a scope malfunction in a TEOTWAWKI situation you could just shoot the irons. It may be more convenient than searching the planet (possibly on foot) for a suitable scope. Just saying :)

Elk hunting is totally different than deer hunting. Besides that if you wait until you master deer hunting you may die before you ever go elk hunting. I forgot to put in this year, dang it

Patriot Collector 39 Gun Safe 2HR (TONS OF PICTURES)
JWC replied to alwaysonjohn's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
How much of a discount for the crappy Patriot stuck in back off in the corner? Lol -
He still lives in Sanford? I do hope it was a black family.

Opry Mills is like Disney World, nothing bad ever happens there, or you really just don't hear much about it anyway. It seems like a not so bad place but I'd put it up there on the list of best places in town to come in contact with crime. Best friend of a girl I used to date was leaving her menial part time job one DAY and a gangsta pulled up, stuck a shotgun in her face, and relieved her of $7. Don't get me wrong there are many bad places and crime can generally occur anywhere. But malls seem like good places. Not sure why anyone goes to them with the internet and all. In the end this sure seems a little too random to me.

I planted some Navaho's this year. I think I've eaten 5 berries off of them and my 2 year old has eaten/pulled off a couple too. I'm gonna try to acquire 2-3 more next year or may have to buy em. They make big fat berries that taste good. Piss on thorns. This was the year of fruit. My dad always said he should've planted blackberries he just didn't for some reason. He died last year and left me the house so i figured in his honor I'd plant some. He sure loved blackberries! Then I decided he loved blueberries and strawberries too. So I planted them. But I want more so when the leaves drop I'm gonna take out 2 large useless Bradford pears, a ragged looking maple, and line the side fence with more fruit of some kind. Man I hate them trees.

TN black caucus calls for review of 'Stand Your Ground' law
JWC replied to QuietDan's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
It seems like some of these black "leaders" are fine with selling em out just like black African slave traders. I reckon many actual slaves were similar. They got all things from their owners and never even considered the fact that they were enslaved. -
$5 says she's arrested (i'm guessing drugs but who knows) within a year. Anyone willing to bet against that?

Sheep's ass... Slaves. and I believe they've succeeded putting 90%+ of blacks back in shackles. -
I don't always watch videos that are posted but when I do I'm glad that they are awesome ones.

Good score on the berries. Reckon that guy stumbled up on someone elses berry turf too? I'd have never seen the body, nor gone to the Y. I'd have just stopped there and picked berries all day.

I don't even eat potatoes every day but I just stockpiled 2 five gallon bucketfuls. (As to how this relates to deranged psycho, idk)

I got a cool Apache/lake story. A couple of years ago I was running about 65 mph up KY Lake/TN River down by the Beech River, just cruising along. All the sudden the guy with me reached over to get my attention. I looked to my right and there was an Apache pulling up directly beside me with his wheels right off the water. They smiled and waved. Then pulled ahead. Then another went right over the top of me, a little higher up of course, but still right above me. And another on went by just off my left side. It was crazy and awesome! Another night I was fishing Percy Preist. You could hear several helicopters coming but couldn't make them out. Then all the sudden one of the Kiowa's in the front lit us up with a spotlight. And the group bwent over us heading into Smyrna. it was a couple Kiowas and about 20 Blackhawks with zero lights on.

For rifle brass I chuck the cutter part of a Lee hand trimmer in my drill press then cut it on and put the brass in the little holder dude and hold em up to it. Seems like it'd be slow but ya get in a rythm and fly through them. Gotta be careful though. Never trimmed pistol brass
