Carry and accident, what happened?
lowery100 replied to zenman's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
A couple of years ago, me and a couple of friends were riding our motorcycles back from bike week in Daytona Beach when one friend went unconscious and wrecked his bike. The FL trooper took everyone's info and asked where me and my other friend were heading, we were going to the next exit and getting a room to wait to hear the condition of our friend who was being life flighted to Tallahassee. We had been there for about 45 min when the trooper came rolling up while we were unloading our bikes and said the ambulance drivers had found my friends SP101 on him and turned it over to the Trooper. He asked if one of us would mind taking possession of the weapon, that it would save him an hour of paper work and my friend would get his gun back much faster. I kind of doubt this is the norm but I am sure there is an SOP for medics and police for such situations. -
I'm always glad to see jobs come to the area. However, manufactures are coming south because they know we southerners will work longer hours for less pay, do as we're told and be happy to do so with no interference from an outside source(unions). Sounds very familiar to conditions in Central/South America and most of Asia. Everyone loves to talk about the good old days, well in the "good old days" a man could get out of school or the military get a good paying job, buy a house and raise a family and take the occasional vacation with his family. All this with the wife staying home raising the kids.

I looked for close to a year for a used 550 or 650 with no luck. Any one I found was priced nearly at new prices, especially when factoring in shipping. As far as new ones, it does not seem to matter who you buy one from, Dillon dictates what they must be sold for, so no deals there. I finally broke down and bought one from my local dealer here in Mt Juliet.

I too was talking to the sporting goods manager a few weeks ago in Mount Juliet. They are just now getting long guns in to sell, seems their market research said people in Mt Juliet like guns. Also said they expect to be selling handguns after the new year. Just as all stores do not sell guns not all will sell handguns, it all depends on the local demographics.
-
I don't have the 650 but the 550 and that's all I use in it is Lee dies. You should be able to use any brand dies you want in the Dillon.

Small pistol primers are all that I've ever used in 357. Never used Longshot though. Always with Unique or Red Dot.

I'll have to check around other Walmarts to see what they have.

I just stopped in my local Walmart (Mount Juliet) to check the ammo situation, They had lots of new stuff (Federal PD ammo, Winchester 1000rnd .22lr, along with several other new choices) but no bulk 440rnd cans of .223 they did say it may be coming. However, started talking to the Sporting goods manager and they have the cabinets for long guns and expect to be selling handguns after the first of the year. Had no idea of what kind of inventory they would stock though.

Sheriff tells citizens to carry a concealed weapon.
lowery100 replied to mav's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Its refreshing to see someone not speaking in p/c circles trying to further/protect their political careers. One well placed shot would have ended this problem for good. Now he will be pushed through the system, to be let out in a few years only to be on the prowl again. -
I personally dig a girl who is brave enough to do her own thing and find her sexy! As a person with a few tattoos , I may be a bit prejudiced. Semper Fi.

Carrying a "Compact" 1911 - "Advanced" carry gun?
lowery100 replied to Viracnis's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
I will add, I too have carried 1911 for a long time. If you ever take the time to go to a good shooting school and are put under a great deal of stress you will sometimes find the weakness of the 1911 platform, Getting a proper grip on the pistol(enough to disengage the grip safety) and under stress disengage the thumb safety. Unless someone is willing to put in the range time to become proficient in these areas, I too will advise someone to look elsewhere. And as far as the reliability of the shorter than full size guns, they are as a whole, less reliable than a full size(5"). That's not say you will not find many people who will say their 3-4.25" runs fine just as a percentage of 1911's out there they are less reliable than a full size. All things to consider when making your decision. The 1911 platform has many advantages but just be ready to accept it's few pitfall. Shoot it shoot it shoot it ....... You should find your self taking the safety off pistols that have no safety. -
I will add, the Speed Six is one of only a few guns I ever regret selling, it and a couple of Colt 1911's. I have been looking for a good deal on one ever since.

Where To Find Winchester Ranger T-Series?
lowery100 replied to wcsc12's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
$30 for a box of premium HP's are about the going rate depending on caliber. As far as I know, the Ranger T's are only sold as law enforcement 50 round boxes, not the 20-25 round packs most "civilian" ammo is sold as and most 20-25 premium HP's run $25+/-. -
As said above. The Speer Gold Dots are among the top performers in defense ammo. I carry the 155gr Gold Dots in my Glock 23, but ammo is a big can of worms. It's similar to the oil debate on car and motorcycle forums, lots of opinions. If you can't find the Speer's find most any of the top brands, they all have an acceptable line of defense ammo. As far as practice ammo goes, its more important you are practicing than what brand or grain. So generaly the cheapest ammo that will function in your pistol will be fine.

I have a friend of mine who worries the s**t out of me to sell him mine all the time. Post it up, and I will let him know about it.

Taurus still catalogs the Mdl. 905 9MM revolver. I haven't seen one in a while though. Most gun shops can check through their distributors to see if they are still available.

I am a big Glock fan. I have a 23, 19, 35, & 34. I had a 36, very good gun. Reliable and easy to carry. A little uncomfortable to shoot but a great pistol. As far as reloads, it's just lead is the only problem. Plated or jacketed will be just fine in the stock barrel. I do shoot lead in my Glocks with no issues but that seems to start a huge controversy in the Glock world.

You can try Reloaders Bench in Mt. Juliet. I think they have one or two EAA's in stock. If not I know they can order them.

Anybody want to swap some LP primers for LR primers?
lowery100 replied to glockster157's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Yea, that may cause an issue. Good luck with the trade. -
I use a Wilderness Tactical belt with CSM poly liner for stiffness. This synthetic thing has been a slow grow on me. I have forever considered steel, wood and leather worthy components for guns and gear. It has been a slow transition to nearly all synthetics now. I first switched to Wilderness tactical belt because the belt is infinitely more adjustable. My only problem with a good leather gun belt is depending weather I was carrying IWB or OWB, the belt holes always lined up either just short of where I needed or too long. Rarely a perfect fit, however with a Wilderness style belt you can put the tension right where you need it. With holsters you have to spend a little more and get a good quality holster, weather it is leather or Kydex. Leather looks better, feels better, smells better but I hate say this, the Kydex holsters and nylon belts seem to work better in most situations for me. I still can't carry my 1911 in any thing but its leather holster. However, my Glock23 which I carry most of the time rides in a Kydex holster. Good quality gear weather it's leather or synthetic makes carrying a heavy gun much more comfortable.

Anybody want to swap some LP primers for LR primers?
lowery100 replied to glockster157's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
I have shot about 150 .45 with the LR. Have now loaded up about 400 more. I can't tell any difference in the way they shoot, no miss fires, no pressure signs. I do have to press a little harder in my Dillon to seat them well. I'm going to use all mine up (about 250 or so more). They are just collecting dust otherwise. -
Look at the EAA Witness Match. It has a single action trigger as opposed to the SA/DA trigger of the standard Witness, however they are just a few dollars more. Either gun is great. I've owned the standard EAA Witness (formely a TZ75) and shot the Match. Hard to get more gun for the money.

lowery100 replied to glockster157's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Yea, I knew they are supposed to be longer, but when seated I can't tell any difference. 6gr of Unique is a fairly low charge for a 200 gr LSWC max being 7.5 so I did not have any concern on over-pressure. Lg rifle primers are also supposed to have a thicker metal for the cup and are supposed to be harder to ignite but I had no problems in my Kimber. They shot to the same POI of all my other Lg pistol primers ammo. I am going to use up my supply since they are getting old and I don't see any other use for them in the immediate future. You may try loading up a small batch just to test them out. -

Funny you ask this. I discovered this same problem this past weekend(800 Lg Rifle primes and no large rifle in my inventory). Did a little research and went out and loaed up 100 45 with 200gr lswc and 6.0 gr of Unique. They all shot fine, not a single misfire or signs of any other problems. -
I rented an appliance dolly from Uhaul to get my TSC Winchester safe in and it still took 3 of us to get it in(up 3 steps).
