1. Hi. It's me, the guy who asked the question. I did the job on both guns to my satisfaction. I had **three** printed instructions in front of me (screen dumped from the good guys who gave me detailed answers), and you guys made this little job idiot-proof. I **couldn't** screw it up... no way, nohow. A word about me and oiling: When I was a kid (about ten thousand years ago), I was "into" model trains, especially the very small ones, the "N Scale." I occasionally would lubricate the motors (motors about the size of a pinky nail). I know what it is to apply oil from the POINT of a pin onto a small, small spot and then blot blot blot with a Q-Tip to get rid of excess. Thanks to everybody. I'll keep looking at this thread. If you have a postscript you'd like to add, post it here or PM me. Thank you. Mike B
2. Yes. Yes. ...and I will repeat the same words that everyone else is saying: You did the right thing. It sounds like you came within a millimeter of death. If your gun hadn't been visible, consider how that might have ended. According to your description, you did a lot of things right: 1. You kept your cool 2. You talked to them 3. You concealed your fear (see #1). You kept your self-control. 4. You were sober yourself. 5. You're not a substance abuser 6. You made a sane sensible reasonable objective common-sense decision to get the hell OUT of there afterward. This is a list of the things you did wrong: 1. Nothing. 2. Nada 3. Zilch 4. Zero They knew that if something bad happened, you could identify them (therefore, they'd have to kill you, and that gun of yours gave the impression that you could at least HURT one of them in a fight). I HOPE I would do as well as you did, in a similar setting. You got guts and you got brains. You're generous to tell the story. Mike B
3. 1- I printed out your detailed instructions. I will refer to them. 2- You are the second person to remind me about the placement of the recoil spring when the gun is reassembled. Good... thank you. THAT IS WHAT I MEANT when I said that I needed the input of good guys with experience and savvy. Good point, good point! 3- Best of all though, was your signature and your reference to the blank check signed by a serviceman or -woman for an amount up to and including his/her own life. That's good... I am going to quote that. I have a dear friend (an ex paratrooper) who will like that. I won't claim it as my own, either. I will say that I read it on a bbs of Tennessee Gun Owners. He is a Tennessean and he does own several guns, but he is not on this board. Mike B
4. I have a brand-new Glock 23… arrived in the new box with two shell casings. I learned how to remove (and reassemble) the slide, recoil spring and barrel. I won’t take it apart any further. Who can tell me what needs to be done in terms of cleaning? (I can follow idiot-proof directions easily enough – I need advice from EXPERIENCED, SAVVY Glock owners who may have a word of advice not covered in printed instructions.) I do have Hoppe’s 9 Cleaning Kit. I don’t have Breakfree CLP. I plan to do this basic cleaning on this gun (and my other new Glock, a 27) and then leave any deeper cleaning/adjusting to the experts. (“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.â€) Thank you. Mike B
5.
Good point!! I forgot that. Mike B
6. CURRENTLY made very important statements, and I hope the other readers of this thread noticed them: 1 - the LOW frequencies present problems that "earmuffs and plugs" don't handle well 2 - In addition to the earmuffs, Currently says he uses foam ear plugs too... 3 - A 40% loss in hearing ability (leaving 60%) is serious. The trouble with this sound-suppression thread is that we haven't emphasized the PERMANANCE of hearing damage. We might take another look at this and maybe reconsider how much time we've given to this... Maybe an investment of hundreds of dollars now would not allow hearing damage in the future. In my case, my hearing is about the only sense I now have that still works 100%. That might explain my concern over this issue and my gratitude for the good guys on this board who took the trouble to help me out. Mike B
7. Thank you all. I've had so many helpful replies that I can't name names any more. However, I have some information that might help someone else with this question: I finally bought Peltor Tactical 7S -- 97039 -- MT1H7A-01 They seem to work perfectly so far. I haven't subjected them to continuous use.... yet. I first bought a "lower" Peltor 6S -- MT15H67FB -- I returned them (to Amazon) because although they seemed to work well as far as sound suppression was concerned, they had a very badly-designed method for battery replacement (which would eventually break the earphones). If anyone wants more details on this, I'll reprint my criticism... if you want to know RIGHT NOW, please go Amazon and look at my comments You'll find them under my name, "perstare." Again, my thanks to the members of this board. Mike B
8.
I got the impression that this forum might have MORE value to a man than to a woman. I learned from this forum. My original purpose was to get ideas dealing with a gun for my wife. I got that, and a lot more. I think Kathy Jackson's articles are excellent; I sent her a short email saying so. In that email, I wrote that she had written, "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus -- Firearms Edition." Mike B
9. Yes. My mistake. Mike
10. I'm a guy. I'm a newbie, too, but not as new as I was about one month ago. I learned some things that might be useful here on this forum. Corneredcat.com is an excellent website. Its main focus is on women and gun issues from their point of view. I think it would be worth your time to look at it, and that is true if you are female OR male. In particular, if you are tangled up in the gender confusion regarding firearms, Corneredcat.com has many articles by Kathy Jackson which deal with this. For example: 1. If you're a man trying to interest your wife/girlfriend/fiancee/bestbuddy in gun ownership (and you are running into "communication problems"), go to Corneredcat and take a look at Kathy's articles. "How to Make Your Wife [or any female] Hate Guns" is a good place to start. 2. If you're a woman driven crazy by your husband/boyfriend/fiance/bestbuddy and his clumsy efforts to buy a gun for you, read Kathy's article, "What Gun For a Woman?" Those are just TWO examples. Take a look at the site... you'll see a lot more. You may have to get past gender issues before you can deal sensibly with gun issues. Mike B
11. I'm new, but not as new as I was about a month ago. My wife and I are just starting to learn about self-defense and the role that a good handgun would play to accomplish that. My first name is Mike. My wife is originally from Hickman County. We retired here about 13 years ago. (Why retire to Dickson? Because wifey has family ties here.) This is a good place to thank all the members of this board who helped me. I/we now own two Glocks, 27 and 23. We have a lot to learn, but we're getting there. During our stay here, I was an Associate Member of the Dickson FOP. The friends that I made in FOP have stepped forward to help me/us on a hands-on level. I take a look at our Glocks and see a lot of good design and engineering. My son is a police officer in NYCity, and now I can understand why he likes his service pistol, a Glock 9mm. Bye for now. Mike B
12. I second the motion. I was very lucky (about 3 weeks ago) to read horror stories about "TopGlock." There was too much evidence there were too many complaints -- far too many -- for the criticisms to be just a couple of guys trying to get even! It's a good thing there are enough honest guys around who are willing to admit their bad experiences to save the "other guy".
13. After you get the cap off, it'll be 'hollow point.' nyuk nyuk Mike B
14. I'm new. I need advice regarding sound suppression headphones. My hearing is excellent (wife’s too), and I really want to keep it that way. I’m looking for electronic, battery-powered headphones that will muffle the loud noises of a shooting range, but amplify conversation voices (so that the headphones don’t have to be removed every time someone wants to talk to me.) Who can recommend a specific brand and model? The cost is secondary. Thank you very much. Mike B
15. Thank you for your detailed reply (hours, phone numbers,,,) to my question. I "screen dumped" it and it's in my GUN looseleaf right now.
16. I need recommendation for a FAST online company which sells Glocks new. I'm looking for 40 cal, that is, the Glock 27 and/or the Glock 23 and/or Glock 22. [For example, Bud's. ... or one of Bud's competitors.] Doesn't have to be in TN Speed is priority Your personal experience and satisfaction is what I'm looking for I have a local FFL dealer -- out of state is fine. I noticed that Summit (near Kansas City) was very highly recommended. Sadly, they do not sell new Glocks. Many thanks. Mike B
17. Regarding your "bubba'd" warning. ........ Have you had good experience ordering from Summit Sales (near Kansas City,MO)?? I wrote to the owner, Mark Kitterman, and he agreed to look out for a Glock 35 for me. Many thanks. You taught me something. ..... BUBBA'd..... I will remember that. Mike B
18. You made me laugh. The Glocks are OK as long as they aren't "bubba'd." I told my wife -- she broke up -- she thought it was doubly funny because she's originally from a bubba family herself. But seriously... you made a point that I will remember: If I have an opportunity to buy a gun face to face (not from a dealer), I'll make sure that the gun (or the seller) isn't "bubba'd." Good point -- good point -- good point! Thank you. Mike B
19. 1) Glock 22 -- generation 2 and generation 3… how are the ‘generations’ different? 2) Glock 22 compared to Glock 35 – I’ve looked at the specs and I can see that they differ in trigger pull, line of sight, barrel length, weight, etc. But the specs are **just numbers** and the specs don’t tell anything about the **human** factor. Who can give his/her input on the human factor? Thank you. Mike B
20. My first name is Mike B. I'm originally from NYCity, now living in Dickson with my wife who is originally from Hickman County and who has many family ties in Centerville and in Dickson. Our son is a police officer in NYCity. I am an ex-Associate Member of the Dickson FOP. My wife and I are just starting out as gun owners. In a week or less, our order from Bud's will arrive at the Sportsmans Store in Dickson. We ordered two new .40 cal Glocks. We need to: take the gun safety course get our carry permits shoot practice et cetera......forever. We're just starting out, remember. I noticed that tomorrow, June 5, 2010, there is a target-shooting gathering in Dickson on Coon Road. I will try to get there just to scope it out. I have no gun yet. I'm looking around for a place close to home where my wife and I can get in some practice. I've got a lot to learn, but I learn fast. If anyone has suggestions as to how we can begin the gun-owners part of our lives, I'd really appreciate some help. Thanks
