I only drink from a Glencairn Glass anymore.

I go to the local malls often. To fix their broken things. They still seem crowded to me. I might have been to a mall five times in total over the last ten years. I have been a few dozen times in the last year.

We have the $20 Walmart FAK in all the vehicles. Nothing fancy.

I am thinking of SHTF in terms of a grid shutdown. In that aspect, myself and millions of others won't be able to depend on debit cards, credit cards or checks. Cash will rule. If we assign a spot value ($20 an oz) on silver, or similar commodities, general trade transactions will be able to continue. Even if we think in terms of a collapse like Venezuela, there will be other major powers out there to continue on. You think that China and Russia won't recognize an oz of .999% pure silver? In the event of a total collapse or a TEOTWAWKI situation, my silver stockpile will be as useless as my guitars or my wife's art collection. Again, for a common day first world problem, I don't see this as a loss. I will be relying on my stockpile of food, guns, ammo and my will to survive.
-
If the SHTF yes, in TEOTWAWKI, no. SHTF implies that order will be reestablished. I would be willing to trade my services for precious metals in the event of a natural disaster or short term social collapse. I have a skilled trade. Even without it, I might be willing to part with some of my supplies for a valued commodity if I knew that eventually normality would return.

What guns, gear or training are in your crosshairs for 2018?

I would like to get my heathen to the range more often. Once a week in the warm months is doing well, but I think weekly would be better. -
I will have the physical cold hard bullion on my hands as soon as it is delivered. I would not have done it any other way. It will be as secure as any other physical possession I "own."

That is honestly the biggest question I have right now. My empirical experience with this is an episode of Pawn Stars where Rick paid spot to a cat that brought in like $100k of silver. Overall though, I have $50k+ invested in cars that I might be able to get $20k out of. $20k in guns and ammo I might be able to get $5k out of. $10k in guitars and gear I might be able to get $2k out of. I figure $10k in silver, that doesn't move, that is worth $10k ,is a worthwhile investment given my impetuous habits. I see precious metals as just a worthwhile investment. Like many here, expressed or not, I rate things on a ZPAW scale. If the Zombie Apocalypse occurred, what value with this have? Guns, ammo, food, etc... If I have 100k rounds in ammo and a year's worth of freeze dried food, why would I not have some silver in easily bartered denominations? Like I told my wife, if I am crazy, tell me so. However, I don't think that based on the amount I have spent, versus my disposable income denotes me anywhere near insane. At the very least, I can roll around in all the shinyness in the floor. Alone. Where I am not judged.

I think I might buy a Mil-Spec style 1911 this year. Since I don't have one, or a .45ACP. -
I searched and found a few old threads, but nothing definitive. I recently decided to drop a small chunk of change into silver. It wasn't pocket change, but it wasn't a massive amount either. I haven't invested in something like this before. I normally collect toys like guitars and guns, so a new hobby like this seems fun. JM Bullion was running a deal where you get 10oz of Silver Rounds at spot. I got that and some other stuff to add to it. I can't say exactly why I did it. Sure, if SHTF silver will probably be more reliable for purchasing until things stabilize. It might be neat to pass on to grandkids or something many years down the road. If prices ever skyrocket on silver for a day or two I might make a couple of bucks selling it at spot. I can sit alone in my office in the floor and roll around in all of it... Sure, it isn't as useful as my guns or guitars, but I think it is neat to have, and my wife didn't complain one lick about it. Which I am certain is a trap. But then again, it is shiny, and she is a woman.

Better safe than sorry. My cars and bike are locked in the garage. I am driving the wife's car and the work van. Granted, we did get flurries up here today.

I might be talked into buying one.

It is in the new American Rifleman too. It made me laugh.

I got an Echo, that was neat. Now I need to learn to use it. The puppy got my a Deadbeat Thank You Fuzz pedal. Which brings into sharp contrast that my Mule Strat needs to be finished. $300 in parts and labor on a $100 guitar is awesome. -
Yeah, the critics are butchering it. I can see why though, it was predictable and left a lot to the audience to decipher. I kinda liked that part of it. If they had spent five hours telling up about who was related to who and why the Dark Lord wanted that ring back... Oops, my bad, wrong Orc movie. The special effects were good and the acting wasn't terrible. The setting was I liked the most though. I have also found that I rarely agree with critics. I mean, they take themselves too serious, and in the end they are just pretentious and baseless in their reviews. Some of the worst and most boring films I have seen have been "critically acclaimed."

I am a full on Fantasy Nerd. My daughter is named after a deity in a dice chucking setting. Takhisis if you must know, I have said it before. Bright is a new Will Smith film (I like Will Smith) that puts him as a cop partnered with an Orc as a 'diversity' hire. The film takes the entire setting for granted, if you watch it you just have to accept that Orcs are criminals and Elves rule the world. That is a plus for me. I don't want to spend an hour having the world explained to me when the film just rolls with it. The racial overtones are obvious, but done within taste and reason. Elves>Humans>Orcs>Faeries. It sucks as a buddy cop movie, it sucks as a fantasy movie, but if you watch it as a movie, it is pretty good and I really hope that the trilogy they are hoping to start goes forward. "Faerie lives don't matter today."

I personally rank the Smashing Pumpkins as one of, if not the definitive act of the 90's. Nirvana, Tool, and Creed be damned. Billy Corgan summed it all up in a few simple albums. Siamese Dream was gold, literally (;)) and Melon Collie was indisputably a genre definer. Alternative music never hit the high it did in the 90's before, or again. Even now, when I pick up a guitar, I dream of being as good as Corgan or Iha. Shoegazing is underrated.

Twenty years ago, I paid a great sum of money (for a young adult) to import The Proximity Effect at Sam Goody in Athens. They were the only place that could get diverse things like that. I bought Pearl Jam's Last Kiss Single there as well, not knowing at the time it would only be available as such. They got me several Iron Maiden albums and I stood in line for Metallica's S&M. Chain store or not, I mourn the loss of quality music stores. Amazon fills that roll now, but I recall I day when I could walk into a brick and mortar and they knew i wasn't asking about Christmas Carols when I asked for Sleigh Bells.

I haven't clicked the link yet. I wanted to lead off with that. But I did want to ask if you are a member of the Zombie Squad? It sounds cliche, but if you are there, you know it isn't. It could help you quite a bit in what you want, as the members there are well versed in heirloom farming and living off the grid as well as a million other things. Many of their members run courses and clinics. They have been published in mainstream prepping magazines and they have national level training classes. If you aren't a member, check them out. They are also a 503c that has actively participated in helping for most natural disasters of the last several years. The biggest focus there is preparing for the worst, in a legal fashion. If you are prepared for the ZPAW (zombie post apocalyptic world) dealing with a short term disaster like a flood or hurricane is nothing, right? Even the CDC and movie production companies have consulted with them. Disclaimer: I am a member there, and have been for a long while, but I am more of a lurker than a poster. There are a lot of tin foil/space shuttle door gunner types there that think their opinion is law/fact, but once you wade past that, there is A LOT of useful information. -
House of the Rising Sun is a very meaningful song to me. 5FDP's cover of it IMO is the best version. Over Leadbelly, The Animals, anyone. And the video (produced by Steve Darnell of Welderup) is my idea of heaven. Or hell depending on how you lived your life. It is my personal ringtone. And as soon as I find a version of this song, it will be my ringtone on my second phone.

I have worn out few CDs over time. The Offspring's Ixnay on the Hombre is one of them. (Chevelle's Wonder What's Next and Sublime's Self Titled is the third.) I have recently become a massive 5FDP fan. They are dedicated to their craft. They rock. They are devoted to veterans. I can't even begin to count the songs they have put out dedicated straight up to veteran causes. I think they might be alone in the pure effort they are making. Much love for that. Period. Your cup of tea of not. They released a new song yesterday (today for me still,) and it is a cover of The Offspring's Gone Away. I dare you to keep a dry eye.
