Feel Good Story - If You Don't Have A Dog, GET ONE!
Murgatroy replied to xRUSTYx's topic in General Chat
I can't wait to get out of my little apartment and into a bigger one so we can get a dog. -
Thanks, I think we can do that. Let me get a couple of parts stocked up for it, a rail and a scope most importantly at this point, then I will bring it over, we can do some work on it and set the barrel back then sight it in.

Justin Timberlake attends Marine Corps ball as promised - NY Daily News While I was never a fan of his music, it was refreshing to read about him and Mila Kunis agreeing to attend the Marine Corps Ball. I have much respect for a star that tries to give something back. Mila Kunis is slated to attend hers later this month.

Glad you had fun. I wondered if any of the other shooters up there were from the board when I was there. I was shooting the 10/22.

Works fine for me, loads pretty fast too.

I don't recall a 4Runner there when I got there. There was a gentleman sitting on the far right end with an Olympic AR, and a gentleman sitting on the left with a .17HMR bolt action. It was 4pm or so when we arrived. I set up in the middle and played with my Ruger 10/22. I didn't hit squat, but I loved it. I don't know how I made it this long without a 10/22. The wife decided to go, took the daughter along, showed her the ropes, she kept her muffs on the whole time, so maybe next time I will take her rifle with us and let her try it out.

It is a blast. I definitely need more magazines. The ten rounders aren't bad, they drop right out, impressively so, but I only have two, so I wind up reloading quite a bit. I grabbed the Winchester 525 brick from Academy, $16 and not a single failure in 200 rounds. I will run back and grab a couple more boxes if it stays the same price. This is probably the first range session I have had that I didn't sit with my Rough Riders and pop shot shell hulls for several hours. Part of it had to do with the lateness of my arrival, having my wife and daughter with me and having so much fun with my new rifle. I am hooked on rimfire.

Ah... I was pressing and holding to release.

Made it up to Norris with it today. Wow. How did I make it to this age without a 10/22? I didn't hit squat, ran through 200 rounds of ammo and loved every second of it. Well, let me rephrase. With irons at 50 yards, it was about three inches to the right. Not bad at all, the groups held great. Over all I was very happy. Thirty rounds went this way. Now here is where I made my mistake, if we are going to call it that. I didn't get up there till late, and I didn't get started shooting until after 4pm. I attached the factory rail, and dug out an old rimfire scope I had, I think it came factory on the Nylon 66 I have from back in the `70s. So I get it all buttoned down, and set of a target to zero the scope. Not a shot on paper. So I spent the next 100 rounds going shot by shot, pulling out my binoculars, checking, adjusting... Nothing. So I got frustrated, the range goes cold, I go downrange, check my target, and see that I had been making a nice little 2" group right in the black ring, where I couldn't see it. Overall I am very pleased. It ate everything, and just kept on going. That little bolt hold open thingy is a pain in the ass though. Now I am looking for a better rail and scope. Should keep me busy the rest of the night reading reviews.

It was busier up there today than I have ever seen it. There were six of us at the rifle side over the two hours I was there, and probably a good ten folks over on the pistol side. Someone left a later model Toyota key up there, it is on the center rifle table.

Probably visiting within the last thirty days.

For the price, I don't see how anyone could go wrong with it. It is just large enough to be a utility knife, but still small enough to be nimble. Like I said, the only thing I didn't care for was the sheath, but even then, it is a neat design.

Anyone going to head up? I am trying to talk the wife into going, but she is not having any of it at this time. I figure I will head up sometime in the afternoon.

So after reading some raving reviews about Moras and their usefulness, I picked one up yesterday. I was at SMKW and browsing around, and for the first time that I can remember, my wife spent more than I did. After asking a few employees that were clueless, I found one that pointed me in the right direction. The woman working the counter was actually fairly knowledgeable about what they were, even owning one herself and knowing the reputation they have among the bushcraft community. After handling a Mora Cutter in a carbon blade for a bit I decided that $9 it was worth it. The knife was very solid and just felt good in the hand. The sheath felt a little cheap, but overall I liked the package. It is shaving sharp, so I haven't taken it to a stone yet, but it seems that it will be very easy to sharpen. One question I do have regards the carbon steal blade, should I do a forced patina on it to keep it from rusting? This is going to be a knock around knife, but I don't want the blade to rust up. Over all I am pretty happy with it, and at $9, how could I not be.

Sonofa... I have been on vacation all week. I went to CCA and paid to shoot. I may slip off tomorrow and avoid Sunday Cleaning...

I hope I am wrong, but I thought they were closed for hunting season? If not, it would be a great chance to go play with my new 10/22.

This and another post in a different thread reminded me of this. I was in your Maryville shop the other day, and you had both the Thureon (in .45ACP UZI mag version) and a JRC in .40S&W. Thought I would post to let any locals know if they wanted to swing by. After fondling both, I have to say the JRC felt much better overall. The Thureon felt more 'substantial,' but I didn't care for the fore end compared to the JRC.

I didn't see any of the wood stocked carbines, I did see some synthetic stocks and stainless versions. As I figure the bug will hit me, I didn't see the point of buying anything higher than the plainest and cheapest model. They did have a Thureon Defence and JR Carbine though. I was impressed to see those.

I bought two firearms today, paid for one background check. A pistol and a rifle.

Great show, are they doing both seasons, or just Season Two?

Thanks! That is kind of the reason I grabbed a 10/22. Just all the fun things out there for it. For the price, and shooting targets, as much fun as a high power rifle would be, I don't want to spend that kind of money. If I have any questions, I will be sure to ask. I just picked up a couple of Ruger magazines, believe it or not, Wal-Mart had them. I think Norris is shut down right now, so it might be a little bit before I shoot it, but I can't wait. I did a basic clean this evening to get a feel for it. The stock leaves a little to be desired, it has a few rough spots in it, but that is to be expected for what it is. Nodak just released a peep rear for the Ruger receiver, it includes a full rail with it, but it is a hefty price. I honestly think I might pick it up though, as it gives the option for optics, and a quality sight. With this being the base carbine model, and having the barrel band, wouldn't it be self defeating to free float the barrel? Is that something better left for a new stock? I am not adverse to dropping a little coin on it over time to make it better, but I think my immediate goal will be some better iron sights and then just shoot the crap out of it. I am kind of having a hard time deciding on the direction to go with it. I really like the M1 Carbine stock sets I have seen, but that doesn't seem like it would favor accuracy. On the other hand, I really like the Archangel Target Stock as well. Thus once I decide on the stock set, it helps decide whether or not to go with a barrel and other work. Or I could just buy another 10/22 and build both...

I am not aware of anything out in Nashville, last I heard our warehouse out there was staffed.
-
Well that answers my question.

I didn't check ammo prices all the way around, but the Winchester 525 Bulk is $16, which is cheaper than Wal-Mart. The Monarch Branded 9mm was $9.49, which is the same as Wal-Mart for Federal. Their rimfire long arms selection was priced equitably to Wal-Mart, and cheaper than I have seen anywhere else locally. They did have the $699 Bushmaster with the reddot that Buds is advertising. I really didn't pay a whole lot of attention to any other long arms. I saw the Cougars in 9mm at $499, one in .45ACP for $449. The LCPs were on sale for $279. A Sig Mosquito was $250 if I recall correctly, they had a colored frame higher. An Uberti .357 Single Action was $279, a slew of Rossi double actions in many flavors for $249-299. Glocks were in the $499 range. I didn't look at much else, took in some of the sights while I waited an hour for the background checks to begin. I did notice they had a lot of kids working there. There might have been two folks behind the gun counter over twenty-five. I noticed that several of them were stumped by the simplest questions, such as "What round does the Glock 17 shoot" as a gentleman was filling out the 4473 to buy said Glock. I did notice one of the floor walkers doing his damnedest to sell the Hornady Zombie Defense rounds. They had them in .223 and most handgun calibers he claimed. But he was blindsided when a customer asked him to locate another commercial brand in a different caliber. I am sure once they get settled into their groove in Knoxville it will just become another regular haunt, but right now there is a lot of fuss going on about it.

Rumor has it they will. Free Crocs to the first 100 visitors, door prizes and such. I was expecting that today, so I was a little disappointed. I was sitting there at ten till eight. I went to Maryville yesterday, the Walmart on 411 has guns, I stopped by Stars and Stripes right next to it, and then headed up to Bill's Outpost on Calderwood. I was price checking the Ruger 10/22 Carbine. Bills and S&S both had them $250+ while WM was at $197. Academy showed it at $197 on their website, so I just held off till this morning. They had a good rush going, by the time I left at 9:30, the parking lot was packed, and more folks pulling in. It took about an hour for the background checks to start running, so they had a slew of us sitting there waiting. It was refreshing to see some similar faces, some of the clerks from Gander Mountain are there, Steve notably, he is a great guy and always winds up costing me money. Their ammo prices and selections were fair, the Monarch Branded Russian stuff is a nice addition locally, I have never had a problem feeding it through my Glock or AK, so it will be nice to pick it up locally.
