  1.   I'm not so sure about that. I hear Memphis has had better luck with theirs.
  2. According to a friend in Metro PD, nearly everything they get on their buybacks is junk. Every now and then something good shows up, but you'd have to be in the right place at the right time and hope against all odds that the one or two that show up that day would deal with you instead of turning it in to the cops.   Metro's recent buyback in November only netted them 91 guns.   But if an impromptu gun show broke out then word spreads pretty quickly that some people are down there paying cash instead of $25 Dollar General gift cards. Maybe that would make more show up.
  3. Thanks for the tip. I ordered 2 that night and got the shipping conf. email this morning.   One more reason why TGO rocks!
  4.     If a vendor has a physical presence (store, office, warehouse, etc.) in a state, they have to collect the sales tax from any buyer in that same state on behalf of the state and send it in. When you buy on the Interwebz/Mail Order from out of state, you still owe sales tax to your own state, but the vendor isn't required to collect it from you. You're supposed to fill out a form and send in the sales tax yourself. Shopping on line is often seen as tax free when It's actually tax evasion.   The deal Amazon made with TN delayed them collecting the sales tax until 2014, but they have to send out the form you saw in the meantime so that you can pay the tax to the state directly. That's something on-line shoppers should have been doing all along, but almost nobody does it. I suspect the state's thinking was that the form might prompt people to pay the tax out of fear that someone's watching. Collecting even a small part of what's owed is better than collecting nothing.
  5. Nope. CTD can go out back and do things to themselves involving a rusted farm implement.
  6. The news is reporting it now as official. I will be sending them one last message stating why I'm cancelling my account and why I'm "spreading the word".
  7. I was in Chicago this summer for my 3rd trip. I like the place. Hate the politics, but the city can be pretty fun. I spend the extra money to stay at a nice place near the watertower (Sofitel Water Tower...awesome modern architecture by Mies Van Der Rohe). I always feel safe walking near there. It's busy with the Mag Mile 2 blocks away and part of Loyola Univ. a block south. I use the L train with no worries. I try to remain in the Loop except when going to a Cubs game. The red-line trains to Wrigleyville on game day are busy and full of Cubs fans. Don't ride them late at night or course. General safety things apply there like every where else. If the station is deserted and you don't feel safe, go back up to the street and get a cab.   Between the river near the Tribune building and over to Navy Pier, there's not much activity. I wouldn't walk that except on a sunny Saturday when all the people are out. Get a cab or take the "trolley" bus. Stick to The Mag Mile, Water Tower, John Hancock Bldg. Wrigleyville on game day, Theater district including a huge Macy's*, and the Willis (Sears) building during the week (dead on Sundays) and you'll have a great trip. The parks along the lake like Millenium park down the Field Museum are usually pretty dead this time of year. See "The Bean" and the giant Buckingham Fountain, then move on unless there's something happening like a concert or festival. I did NOT feel safe there one early Sunday morning.   The way some people on here sound, Chicago is Beirut circa 1984. It's not. I found the transitions from "safe" to dangerous much more rapid in Baltimore than Chicago. If you're super worried about it, take a bright flashlight and try to pick up some pepper spray once you're there. You may find some at a Walgreen's. They're everywhere up there. Mostly, relax and have fun. Just don't be stupid.   *Take her to a nice lunch at the Walnut Room in Macy's. Girls like that stuff :). You may need reservations. http://www.visitmacyschicago.com/pdfs/WalnutRoom_Menu.pdf
  8.   Close. The media thinks we ARE a bunch of fascists.
  9. We even checked inside air ducts. It's amazing what you can find that fell through a register in an older home. Equally amazing is how well sound travels from one room to another through those things. Instant spy-network!
  10. Depends on what/how you carry.   Crossbreed Supertuck and CompTac Minotaur are both popular IWB (inside waist band) options. Most here tend to give Crossbreed the edge but CompTac is a fine choice. They're both good for guns ranging from little pocket pistols to full-sized.   I have a Remora that I like for IWB, but only for small guns like a Kahr PM9. I'll probably give it a try with a G26 too.   Safariland makes a molded series for OWB (outside waist band) that I like and will probably pick up some variant of it. They are offered with various levels of retention depending on how much or how little you want your holster to hold on tight.   Don Hume leather holsters are popular too, but can get expensive.
  11. I knew where everything was in the house, including the revolver hidden under the mattress. Hiding things from kids doesn't work. Top shelf out of reach? Not for a kid with time, some dining room table chairs, and no fear of falling over.
  12. David, I thought the same thing....           I liked a sign that you can only see part of in one of the pics. It says this is my sign there are and you just know it goes on with many like it but this one is mine.
  13.   That's pretty much it. The 53 is the carbine version so it's shorter and lighter, but costs more. The 1891/30 is a looooong rifle. There are aftermarket stocks if you want to sporterize it. That cuts down on the weight and allows optics etc. to be put on one easily. It's sacrilege to some folks around here to do that. If you find a great deal on one with good metal and terrible wood, it's not the worst way to give the old girl a new life.     You would think so, but right now, that's just not the case with much of anything. SGAmmo, AIM, SportsmansGuide...all <<SOLD OUT>>. It will come back though.     Here's a slightly older thread from GnL, a forum sponsor. It will give you an idea of some of the pricing avaialble for a few things on your list. They were clearing out an overstock of prior-model bolts and pumps. Notice they had a Marlin in .243 for $200, a Savage in 30-06 for $150, and several pump 12 ga. under $300. Pretty excellent prices since as you said, you're seeing Mosins for that much. Metalhead last updfated that thread back in October, before the fire at the Greenbrier store and before the current panic wave. They may still have some of the stuff that Metal hasn't updated with a strikethrough line. You won't know without giving them a call. The last time I was at the Hendersonville store about the only thing they had plenty of were bolt rifles and pump and O/U shotties. http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/topic/52777-its-clearance-time-at-gl-take-a-look-updated-10-16/
  14. I have one just like it. It's my favorite one to look at.   I can't believe I just said that about a Taurus.
  15. Retailers should be having mixed emotions on it. They made their intended profit (sometimes profit+more) on their existing stock, but now they don't have much to sell. So they're now paying salespeople to stand around telling customers "thanks for coming in with a wad of cash, but we can't take it off your hands." If they can keep enough stock coming in from their distributors to make enough profit on to pay the bills, they can weather through it. Otherwise, it will start eating their cash reserves. I expect it's a tough spot for some of them.
  16. +1 for Coinstar and the giftcard option. They take 0%. Nothing. Nada. It's all yours. You'll find one at most Kroger stores.   There are quite a few choices on the giftcards, so you're likely to find something you'd want.   Since I'm going to shop at Amazon or Lowe's anyway, I just get one of those and call it a day.
  17. I received the same response except the line about existing Groupons still being valid.   I replied asking to be informed when the decision is made.
  18. There's a sticky thread at the top of the Handgun Carry & Self Defense forum that has some helpful links. http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/topic/341-tennessee-handgun-permit-resources/     Specifically it has links to OpenCarry.org* and NRA-ILA's gun laws by state.   *It's not just about open vs concealed. They keep a good list of state laws.
  19. http://www.aimsurplus.com/   Their stock has been as up and down as anyone else's lately, but it's a good source for stuff.
  20. I've tried both a Ruger LCP and a Kahr PM9 and I'll second what razorback2003 said. I'll do it when I have to, but it's much slower to access than IWB or OWB. You'll also need loose legged pants like thin dress slacks or bootcut jeans. If you wear 'em thug style, you could keep an 870 wingmaster in there.
  21. Undo a coat hanger to make it straight, then tie a bright piece of fabric to one end. Shove that end up through the hole in the sheetrock ceiling. You'll need to push it up pretty far to get through all of the insulation. Go to the attic and locate the bright fabric. There's your ceiling hole. Now look at the roof decking above there (assuming a 45d angle from there) for damage. Push on the decking with your hands. You may find a soft spot that you can't visibly see very well if you have OSB decking. The pattern in the wood chips make breaks/damage hard to see. Maybe you got lucky and you hit a truss or cross member instead of the decking.   If you damaged the decking, the shingles on the other side are probably damaged too, or at least loosened. You'd need to get a roofer to inspect that area.
  22. WalMart also stopped selling Chirstmas trees. I went in yesterday to get one and they were out. The clerk said they weren't ordering any more. I found gas grills and garden hoses in their place, so they aren't even holding shelf space for them any more.
  23. What I don't know is the strength of the metal product. What could you print and have actually hold up on say a 1968 Buick? Sure you could make an emblem badge, or a power window switch, but what about a piston arm or exhaust header or steering linkage?   Even if you can't make the tough stuff today, the time is probably coming when you can. AutoZone won't need to stock a bazillion parts. Just the most common ones and a couple of 3D printers.
