I routinely see Savage long actions at pawn shops for ~$300. And while cheaper than new I prefer to buy new because it is easier to sell new parts than used.   Another reason I buy new is in ~2006 there was a restructuring of Savage and the older guns are no longer supported so finding parts can be problematic. Also, the quality of the older guns were not as good as the modern ones.   If a Savage has an Accutrigger it is a new version. If the Savage has a flat area at the back of the receiver it is an older action. Also be aware short actions can have either a 4.27" bolt spacing or 4.40" bolt spacing. The 4.27" is an older, but decent action, while the 4.40" is the post 2006 action.   All long actions, regardless of when they were made, have the same bolt spacing.   If you have any Savage questions feel free to ask. Ok, replace the extractor and the firing pin stop. Buy Ed Brown brand for both. DO NOT mix and match brands because they do not play well together. I have used various brands over the years and they all do OK but the Ed Brown products have always been top notch.   What happens is the factory extractor is not fitting tightly into the firing pin stop. This allows the extractor to "clock" and turn slightly. This causes the empties to eject all over the place and sometimes hit you in the head. It also causes the other problems you describe. The factory extractor is probably not cut correctly and is very loose. There is no amount of tweaking that will make the fix permanent with the factory extractor.   The extractor and firing pin stop are drop in replacements and should not require any tuning. I will say it is a little bit of a pain in the butt to install because they fit so tightly together. But once installed your gun will run so much better. I would also suggest picking up a 16 pound recoil spring and replacing the factory spring of unknown quality. I know it sucks to spend money on a brand new gun but having a reliable gun is worth it.

BTW, ask the clerk at the counter for the catalog. They can order most guns in the catalog and only require a 50% down payment at the time of order. If it doesn't arrive within two weeks they will issue you a refund.

They sell ALL Savage models. The one I parted out was a model 11 in 243. It was the first left handed short action I had seen in 5+ years so I snatched it up. It was on sale for $350 because it hadn't sold in the 3 years it was in the store. I told the clerk I had never seen it and she looked at its history. Turns out it had never been taken out of the store safe until the day I bought it. Left handed short actions were selling for more than what I paid. I have seen model 10FPs as well as all of the standard models.   I would NEVER buy an Axis/Edge. Not because they are bad but because there is not a lot of aftermarket support for them.

Yeah, Walmart.   Go buy the gun for the receiver then disassemble the gun and sell all the take off parts. I picked up a short action left handed action for $350 from Walmart. I sold the left handed stock for $200 because you cannot find them. The barrel sold for $125. So I have less than $50 in my left handed Accutrigger action.   You can find the models with scopes for $384 and do the same except add $50 when you sell the scope with rings.

I would tell them you are a 3 gun competitor. Let them know you were wanting to use Smith products but you are probably going to use a competitor's gun.

You can look all that up online using tax records.   If you want PM me the address and I will look it all up. I would be willing to bet that if they owe a nursing home they also owe taxes, and maybe back taxes, on it.   I use the tax records all the time to look into properties we are interested in.

Give the gun, and especially the trigger group, a good cleaning. A very dirty gun can cause everything you describe. Crud can hold the firing pin forward and the gun acts like an open bolt MG until the firing pin frees itself again. And a bolt face full of crud can cause cases to stick. Bad extractors can cause a lot of these problems too.

By heavy I mean profile wise but that is what keeps the cost down.   We are in a AR buyers market. Who would have ever thought AKs in general would be more expensive than ARs. Nowadays you can build an AR for $500 and buy them for $550 but AKs are generally more than that.   We have 18 months to buy as many "assault rifles" as possible before the next round of OMG the sky is falling when Hillary becomes the first female president.

You do not need two separate. I do know from talking to a dealer recently they told him he could ONLY buy, sell or transfer on his FFL. The dealer said the agent told him he needed something additional to be able to do ANY type of gun smithing work. the dealer had high hopes but settled on transfers mostly but does have some guns he has taken in trade. The painting constitutes manufacture came from an overzealous industry letter but it was quickly reversed. I looked and cannot find the copy I had that I printed off to show a dealer that didn't believe me. It has since been reversed anyways.

Good barrel but a little on the heavy side. It should run subsonic bullets fine with a silencer or supersonics without a silencer. You will have to drill the port to get it to cycle with subsonic ammunition without a silencer. But other than that is should last a lifetime.

You can buy 7.62x39 upper, or barrels, pretty cheap these days. If I wanted a supersonic only 30 caliber in an AR it would be 7.62x39 over 300 Blackout. 7.62x39 will feed fine from 5.56 magazines as long as you don't load them all the way up. I would load 15 rounds in 20 round magazines and never had an issue. I bet the AK magazine lowers will become available before too long. The ONLY thing 300 Blackout does better than 7.62x39 is shoot heavy subsonic bullets through a silencer. For home defense I would also consider a 9mm blow back gun. You get 357 magnum performance out of it. And being blow back it is the most reliable setup, infinitely more reliable than any locked breech gun.

I am going to make my own. I will likely use a Green Mountain blank.

Picked up some CCI MiniMag HP for $7/100 at Walmart yesterday.

Missouri Bullet Company sells some 245 grain cast, and coated, bullets for not a lot. Something like .20 each shipped and they do shoot really well.   If you are sticking with 5.56 then barrel length is king. A 7.5" barrel is barely over 2,500 fps and the extra 3" can bring the velocity up into fragmentation velocities. I would also try to find a 9 twist over a 7 twist. A 7 twist with such a short barrel is a very bad combination. Not only will accuracy suffer with anything but the heaviest bullets the bullets will not tumble, or fragment, limiting the effectiveness of the round.   The next shorty I build will have a 12 twist barrel to ensure the bullets tumble.

The fiber optic strands are such low weight I cannot imagine the recoil being a problem.

I am considering buying one and have a few questions. It will be used with a silencer at some point in the near future. First, does it have a chrome lined bore or does have a melonited barrel? Does the grenade sight cut the gas? How tight does the under folder lock up when open? What don't you like about the gun?

Heard of a similar incident when I was in the military. An African oryx got caught in some barbed wire fencing surrounding an area of the base. The MP shot it 14 times in the head with his 1911 and the animal continued to struggle. Someone went back to the station and grabbed an M14 and shot it several times in the chest.

I use a red dot only for home defense. It is in a QD mount and I have magnified optics for the range.   If you want to try a set of the offset sight PM me your address and I will send you a set to try. I really like mine and they do make close shots a lot easier. I will say that they do make the gun a bit wider but it is not a problem for most.

In early 1990 I was in a joint exercise called "Roving Sands" in New Mexico. We were unclear at the time why we had this HUGE exercise but it became clear a year later as we took on Iraq the first time. Large scale exercises are pretty common and this seems like it is nothing more than a joint force exercise.

He is not against silencers, he is against officers having anything that a regular citizen can't. Silencers should be mandatory for all officer's rifles to protect hearing and prevent disability claims. They even make mini silencers for pistols that do not make them much harder to draw.   The officers I have known that were issued full autos said they never received specific training on use of full auto. They said they would qualify in semi auto and that was it. I even knew officers that never fired their full auto weapons. Now imagine what is going to happen the first time they fire in full auto. I say that if an officer is being issued a, or buys his own, full auto he should be required to attend a class on use of full autos before he is allowed to carry it. Way too much liability when you flip that switch over to full auto, especially in an urban setting.   Departments are getting all sorts of military equipment to help them and I am all for it except there are certain weapons that should not be in police hands. Departments are getting M2 50 caliber belt fed machine guns from the government. Now what could that possibly be used for by a department? Not like they can use it to clear buildings or to use it at DUI check or anywhere else. I think a lot of departments are getting equipment while the getting is good without understanding what that equipment could be used for. I wonder how many officers know how to actually set the headspace and timing on an M2 or even load it.   The biggest problem I have is not the different weapons so much as the different sets of rules for different groups. Our representatives pass laws all the time that do not apply to them. And anyone associated with the government, either federal or local, have a different set of rules than the citizens they are supposed to be a representation of. If an officer is allowed to have a full auto to deal with a threat why can't I have the same full auto to deal with the same threat? A bad guy is a bad guy regardless of who their intended victim is and if an officer needs a full auto to deal with the bad guy I should have access to the same full auto.
