Discussion Of Possible Gun Legislation, Parks Again
Dolomite_supafly replied to runco's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
And I don't mean to paint LE in a bad light either. There is approximately 1 in 511,000 chance that you are lawfully killed by law enforcement which is 82x as more likely than being struck by lightening in their lifetime, 1 in 6,250. So statistically you should be struck by lightening 82 times before being killed by law enforcement. And the chance of you being illegally killed by law enforcement is such a statistically small sample that it should never even be feared as a way to die. -
That too. Went so long without a Ruger AR15 that I completely forget about them all the time. Plenty of different ways to get into an AR15 and because it is probably the most customizable firearm on the planet you can either build it to suit you or buy then swap parts to suit you.

Discussion Of Possible Gun Legislation, Parks Again
Dolomite_supafly replied to runco's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
I found some numbers. In 2014 there were 623 people killed at the hands of approximately 900,000 police officers in the US. It does not say whether these shoots were good or bad. That works out to .00069 deaths per officer. There is an estimated 11.1 million people who carry a firearm for self defense in the US. That is ~11,100,000. And those 11.1 million people killed, on average, 76 people a year. That works out to .00000685 deaths per person carrying a firearm for self defense. You are 100x more likely to be killed by a LE officer than by someone who carries a firearm for self defense. Even if these number are off by 50% you are more likely to be wrongfully killed by a LE officer than a person carrying a gun for self defense. So those "experts" are full of it. But if you don't compare the numbers to each other and actually look at the percentages you realize that the actual chance of being killed by a person carrying a gun for self defense is nearly a statistical improbability. You are probably more likely to be killed by fireworks, drowning, car accident, stroke or heart disease than by LE or a person carrying a gun for self defense. references: http://crimepreventionresearchcenter.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Concealed-Carry-Permit-Holders-Across-the-United-States.pdf http://www.nleomf.org/facts/enforcement/ http://www.gunfacts.info/gun-control-myths/concealed-carry/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_killings_by_law_enforcement_officers_in_the_United_States,_2014 But even if my numbers are off by 50% your are still more likely to die at the hands of LE than at the hand of a person who carries a firearm for self defense. -
Discussion Of Possible Gun Legislation, Parks Again

I would like see how many wrongful deaths occur in the hands of LE officers compared to civilians legally allowed to carry firearms. There are a lot less officers than civilians carrying firearms so if the officer's numbers are even close to being equal to the civilians then it is painfully obvious that his statement is completely false. All they are trying to do is control who can carry a firearm and where they can carry, nothing more. It has nothing to do with public safety or revenue, as they claim. I can guarantee that the vast majority of the those against gun owners would carry a firearm themselves or have security do it for them. So it is not a fear of gun, or the fear of those carrying guns, that drives them like they pretend. -

Need a Smith to re-barrel my AK-74
Dolomite_supafly replied to jmecklen's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
Not so fast. CAI is importing a lot of milspec guns that are some of the best on the market. Dare I say it but CAI is the top importer of top quality guns. In the past there have been issues but I have not heard of any widespread problems from CAI imported or built guns in the last 3 years. The only exception to that is the PAP. It had some issues with the bolt carrier being too soft but CAI did not produce those but they are making it right for any owner who complains. And it only applies to certain PAPs. Nothing wrong with the N-PAP DF as it is a current production, 100% foreign made, AK built by the Zastava corporation that would be the AK I would pick if I had to have an under folder. And every single time I have contacted CAI they have been wanting to help. I called in with a simple question and one of the tech guys spent 45 minutes on the phone. I have never been placed on hold, they have always been extremely nice and helpful. I can say that there are plenty of other firearm manufacturers that are way, way worse as far as customer service and quality of their firearms. WASRs, for example, are probably the best milspec AK on the market right now. The older WASRs had issues but the current production Romanian guns are 100% foreign made using 100% brand new parts. No more WASRs are being made using older parts from demilled guns. And so far the six or seven Romanian AKs I have bought in the last two years have been PERFECT. And if I had to grab just one gun today to trust my life to it would be a current production WASR regardless of price. Cold hammer forged barrels, that are chrome lined, will last several lifetimes and everything else that makes up a current production WASR is as good as anything I have ever shot, used or owned. Not a single Romanian gun I have owned, or shot, has EVER had a malfunction. They are as accurate as any AK I have ever shot and it seems like the current production is a lot more accurate. Reports are coming in that they are shooting under 2 MOA using cheap ammunition which is better than most ARs, or other AKs, using milspec ammunition. But realistically as long as it can reliably shoot minute of bad guy inside of 200 yards it is acceptable for me. And the guns they are currently manufacturing are a lot better than in the past and definitely better than anyone else in the same price range. No other manufacturer or importer can compare to CAI when price and quality are the major deciding factor. You won't find another manufacturer's gun that is as good as the WASR for the same price or even within a few hundred dollars of the WASR price. I would like to know about another manufacturer selling a foreign made milspec AK with a forged barrel for under $600 shipped. The US is great at making ARs, it is "our" gun but we are decades behind even the most rudimentary foreign AK manufacturer. We see it over and over again, US manufacturers trying to duplicate the durability, reliability and accuracy of a foreign made AK only to fail unless it costs 2x more than the gun they are competing with. So why spend 2x as much to get a gun that is probably not as good as the gun that costs 1/2 as much. Most of the "custom" AK builders out there are not builders. They are assemblers at best because all that most of them do is swap out parts, much like assembling an AR, then charge thousands more for the parts and labor that anyone can install themselves. They claim that when they "smooth" the action it is an added bonus but in reality anyone can do it in 20 minutes using 600 grit sandpaper to smooth the rails, bolt and carrier so the gun feels smoother. And the go to starting platform for all these "custom" builders has been the Saiga because it was so cheap to begin with. So, as you can imagine, these "custom" builders are now using the WASRs instead of the Saigas because of the ban. They take a $500 WASR, apply a few hours worth of labor installing parts and sanding the internal surfaces then charge the end user $2,500+ dollars for a gun the manufacturer probably has less than $1,000 in. And the absolutely worse part of the who thing is anything these modification do can be done by anyone with half a brain. -
This is a warning for individuals or trusts who are unfamiliar with the NFA laws relating to machine guns. First rule of thumb, if it is to good to be true it probably isn't true. You cannot buy ANY full auto that is legally registered for under $3,000 now, especially an AR-15/M16. Legally registered full auto ARs are now $15K-$30K depending on the make, model. The days of cheap full autos went away in May of 1986 and after that date there was no way to register or make a machine gun legally as an individual or as a trust. You cannot legally convert your gun into a machine gun without registration and that registration ended in May of 1986. So if someone is trying to sell you a machine gun or the parts to convert your gun into a machine gun be aware it is not legal in any way shape or form to convert your gun to a machine gun after the 1986 date. Possession of the parts needed to make a machine gun is just as illegal as possessing the machine gun itself. Even if your gun was made before the May 1986 cutoff date it cannot be converted into a machine gun unless it was actually registered as a machine gun prior to May of 1986. If someone is trying to sell you a machine gun ask for the Form 1, Form 3 or Form 4 to verify it is properly registered. I would also suggest you get the serial number and verify that the serial number is on file with the ATF. The reason is there has been a rash of people making up phony Form 4's, accepting payments then when the buyer tries to transfer it becomes clear the item is not on the NFA registry. This also applies to any other NFA item you are buying from another individual. The only people who can legally posses a new machine gun after May of 1986 is government, law enforcement, the military or dealers licensed to manufacture or demo, or sell them. So if you are contacted by ANYONE wanting to sell you the parts to convert your gun to a machine gun, "no questions asked", run away. What they are selling is illegal to posses and install in any gun not registered prior to May of 1986. And yes, there is a reason why I am posting this now. You have been warned! **************************************************************************************************************** I wanted to add something else. This also applies to lower receivers that might already be fitted with the machine gun parts. I recently read of some people trying to sell airsoft lowers as full auto lowers. Some are built so realistic that it would be easy for anyone, especially someone who is not familiar, to confuse them for the real thing.

There are a bunch of reasons why I will NEVER support CTD. I don't care if they have the cheapest guns, ammunition or accessories I will not buy because of what they did to me long, long ago. Back in 1997 I happened upon CTD and got their catalog to see if they had anything I wanted. I jumped on their website to place an order for some stuff. The order went fine no problems. Over a year later I was looking at my bank accounts and noticed "reservation rewards" for like $10 a month. I figured it was something my wife was part of so I never really looked into it. A few months later I asked her was the "reservation rewards" was for and she said it wasn't her. So I started investigating and called "reservation rewards" to figure out what I was paying for. It was some sort of BS thing to get discounts on HIGH dollar vacations, definitely something I would not sign up for because I could not afford a vacation nor would I ever pay to go to some third world country to "relax". They said I was signed up by CTD when I placed an order with them. I asked them for a refund because I did not join and they refused but they did cancel it. I called CTD and they were adamant that the "reservation rewards" did not come from them. Well a few months later I ordered from CTD again and once again I was enrolled in the "reservation rewards". I called CTD to ask why and they were, again, adamant it wasn't part of their website. I asked for a refund of the current and past payments and they refused. I called again and cancelled the "reservation rewards". I have not ordered from them since. At one point I considered ordering a few things from them but then I heard this. This was relayed to me by someone who I trust 100%. The owner showed up at a gun show, I think it might have been the Waco show or one of the other big shows. He went around and bought every single pound of a particular type of gun powder and paid for every purchase with a credit card. Then Monday morning he disputed EVERY single purchase he made for the powder. Most of the vendors didn't think it was worth the effort to fight it but one did. It took him several months but my friend eventually got his money back from the owner of CTD. But even so the owner of CTD probably made out with what was probably several hundred dollars worth of powder for free. And that is the biggest reason why I will not support him, his company or anyone affiliated with CTD. Crooks run in packs so I view anyone doing business with CTD in the same way I view CTD. And because of that I would never consider spending one red cent with CTD. They are not a company that supports the shooting community, especially those who actually shoot for fun. They look for any excuse they can find to raise prices to panic levels hurting those who do not have sponsors and just shoot for fun.

Would like input on purchasing a bolt action rifle

BTW, here is an AMAZING deal on a Savage Hog Hunter. If you EVER plan on shooting with a silencer this is where I would start my search. http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/topic/89943-savage-hog-hunter-308-w-weaver-super-slam-1-5x-scope/ -

Why would you need a new stock to replace the barrel on a Savage? Might have to clearance some if the new barrel is a heavier profile. -

Savage 10/110 series are WAY cheaper. You can find an accutrigger model Savage, with a scope, for under $400. That is not the Axis or Edge but a really Savage. -
Only certain parts are counted too. For example you cannot add a US made sight and have it count towards compliance. This only matters for rifles, even SBRs, originally made overseas. And the parts cannot be made overseas even if the company selling them is a US company. The only guns 922r does not apply to is pistols. Here is a good place to understand, and verify, your gun's compliance part count. http://thegunwiki.com/Gunwiki/BuildSaigaVerifyCompliance As far as 922r goes yes it is a law but no one has ever got in trouble for breaking it. It is one of those things that they could use it if they wanted to but so far they have not. I know some do not worry about while others, like me, try to follow the law the best I can. Yours should already be 922r compliant but be careful if you start swapping parts out. Just make sure what ever part you swap is US made and you won't have any issues. This is good example of more unnecessary regulations by our government. You can buy scrap parts kits to build your own gun but now those kits cannot include the original barrel. So you have to find, and install, a US made barrel to build your gun now which makes it infinitely more difficult for the home builder.

Time for a game of Good idea/Bad idea.

What about adding it to the barrel? The clamp on types are super cheap. Is there room in the wood for a threaded insert 1/4" long? I have some threaded inserts I can send you. They are 10-32. -
Does it HAVE to be milled? The reason I ask is there are plenty of quality AKs right now in the sub $700 range. I have bought a 1/2 dozen Romanian guns in the last 2 years and have ZERO complaints.

Pick the one you would if they cost the same. The savings isn't worth being left with the feeling you settled because of cost. I am the king of cheap but I will spend the money needed to get what I want.

Discussion Of Possible Gun Legislation, Parks Again
Dolomite_supafly replied to runco's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Has nothing to do with revenue. It is just like everything else, control. They want to control every aspect of our lives even if it is very, very minor. Our country never repeals laws, they just choose not to enforce them. But they are still there waiting for the right person to decide to suddenly enforce them again. Jury nullification can be used to find someone innocent of an old law but most courts will not allow anyone to taint the jury with jury nullification. -

Don't make a big deal about someone carrying a gun and the other potential customers will not be afraid to attend. When you get a bunch of weak kneed individuals screaming that having guns at these festivals will be dangerous then of course potential customers will avoid going based solely on the statements of those who have irrational fears of guns. If the opposition would just shut up about it attendance should not change. But now, even if attendance were to be higher, they are going to claim a loss of revenue then try to sue someone over it. -

A good single stage is a good place for a beginner to start. That way they can learn how to set each die and learn what problems to watch out for. Not saying everybody should start out with a single stage but there is nothing wrong with starting there. -

The World of Contractor Work, All-Inclusive W2
Dolomite_supafly replied to CommsNBombs's topic in General Chat
If they are paying taxes that is great but if they are not then expect to loose 1/2-1/3 of the $44 by the time you pay your taxes, insurance and all the other "mandatory" government withholdings. If you want to talk about overseas contracts feel free to contact me. And honestly going overseas as a contractor might be a better option, especially coming out of active duty. Now is the time to get things going before you get out. It takes 3-6 months to get the first overseas contract from the time the company says they want you because of clearances and IDs. And no, your current clearances have ZERO bearing on any future contracts. Your current clearances are with the DoD and you will get vetted by the agency issuing the clearance. And it depends on the government agency what they are looking for. I have known of people who have been in jail get contracts while others were refused a contract because they were too far in debt. BTW, grab an SF 86 fill it out and use it as a master copy for when you fill them out for other clearances. Doing overseas contracts allowed my wife to stay home with our child. And with the rotations you will get more time home than you could ever fathom. I worked, on average, 6 months out of the year and lived it up the other 6 when I was home. And although it is dangerous it is no where near as dangerous as being an active duty soldier. Not sure what skills you have but if you are trained in medical or communications you could command a premium. I will say that the pay is not what it used to be and the competition is a little tougher now than 10 years ago but for the person with the right training you can easily get a job making a good wage. I know people who bought, and paid for, their house inside of three years. I also know people who blew every red cent they made. But how much you make is up to how much time you want to be gone. I know of one guy who would only do one trip a year that would cover Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years because of the bonuses working during the holidays. If you time it right you can make between $30K and $45K in two months time during the holidays. And if you, or anyone, is considering an overseas position only go with companies that are established and that you sign a contract with. NEVER go over on someone's word, you might end up dead or left in a hostile country trying to find your own way home. I have known a few people who went over with a fly by night company and were basically abandoned after the government paid the company. One guy turned over his passport to the country lead then the country lead flew back to the states with everyone's passports and fell off the face of the earth. My friend had to cross from Iraq into Jordan then go to a consulate to get back to the states and after all that he never received a single dime. One of the biggest indicators as to whether the company is reputable is to ask if you get paid during the training or if they are flying you to training. If they will then it is probably a decent company. If they want you to pay for flights, training and lodging then stay away from them as they likely either do not have a contract yet or they are just interested in making a bunch of money then splitting without paying you. All the times I was paid on a 1099 the "employer" never took out taxes or anything and that was three separate companies over the course of several years. I was left hiring a CPA to go through all of my 1099's to figure out what was owed and what was exempt. And finally, EVERYTHING is negotiable not just pay. I was on a contract when the company needed people to extend 2-3 weeks to cover a transition period. One guy said he didn't want any money but what he did want is some sort of rare 60's-70's drum set. I just laughed until a few weeks later when the company delivered on their promise to find him the drum set they promised.
