Stuff gets postponed all the time. When the BG is out on bond it almost always gets pushed back to make room for those in jail because of that pesky "speedy trial" thing. I am not sure if you could get a bond release notification now or if that would even help keep you informed of his status, I doubt it. I got a bond release notification when my brother was put in jail for assaulting our mother and then coming to kill me. You also might try getting an order of protection from him based on the fact he robbed you. They still won't notify you of his status in the court system though unless the courts feel he is a threat to you. Are you going to be a witness in the trial? If so then they should have notified you of any changes in the court dates. The justice system is so overworked as it is that calling victims would only create more of a backlog. It sounds like you probably need to stay on top of it yourself. Don't rely on the courts to notify you of his status. And honestly, I do not believe they are obligated to notify you of the changes or his status in the court system unless you have a order of protection or a bond release notification. I had to call to find out if my brother was released and I had a bond release notification. Mine fell through because my brother was transferred to a medical facility and released from there. I know it sucks knowing the criminal is out running around when he shouldn't be but it is all part of the system of today. I see my brother all the time and it tears me up knowing he intended on hurting my family and I but was able to get the charges dropped. He should have been in jail for a substantial amount of time because of the standoff with police. Dolomite

I was cruising some pawn shops yesterday and found a decent looking model 2nd generation model 21. The tritium sights are dead but the finish looks great. They wanted $329 out the door for it. It is a bit big for my hands but I am still considering it. I normally buy my Glocks new but this is a lot cheaper than I normally spend also. What do you guys think? Dolomite

My wife has been telling me for a few years to buy a MG as well as suppressors. I haven't yet but maybe I need to. My biggest problem will be feeding any MG I buy. Even a 22 is going cost me a fortune to feed as often as it would probably get shot. Dolomite

And wrap you mind around this. Since then I have had a number of really close calls. One was overseas when if I had been where I was supposed to be I wouldn't be typing this. I left a post to go check on some indig guys, never did it before but that night I did for whatever reason. While I was away a rocket peppered the place I would have been. I definitely would have been hit and judging by the size of the holes and their location it would have more than likely been fatal. Step forward about a year and a half and I am on my way home from another one of my gigs. I was in a helo accident in the middle of "indian" country. Spent 4 hours waiting on SAR before I was able to get out. What should have taken 3-4 hours took well over eight to get where I needed to be. I was treated locally but they felt I would get better treatment if I was able to make it back to the US. I made it home a few days after that and haven't been the same since. Severe nerve damage as well as some other damage in my back because of the accident. If it wasn't for my wife and son I would have lost it a long time ago. I have plenty of other close calls both stateside as well as overseas. I just run with it because it is part of life and I am the one who chose to do what I do. It does seem to follow me though and has for a very long time. Now whether it is bad luck for happening or good luck for surviving I don't know. Dolomite

I m not going to get into it but I was shot with a 45 ACP a few decades ago. It was a FMJ that struck me in the lower leg. It didn't incapacitate me, as a matter of fact I hadn't realized I had been hit for several minutes. It didn't hit bone and left a nice neat entrance as well as a nice neat exit would, looked like a cigar burn the next day. No more than a trickle of blood until the doctors got a hold of me . I had been walking around when I realized I had been hit. I was able to walk without the use of crutches and was back to running regularly within a few weeks. It never felt worse than a mild muscle cramp and I liken the immediate effects to having a firecracker go off in your hand, more of a numbing effect than painful. The worst part of the whole deal was the dressing changes 3x daily for a few weeks. Not saying anything else would have done any better or any worse but every round's performance is dependent more on where it strikes than what it strikes with. With that being said, people need to carry what they feel comfortable carrying and can shoot well. I have seen people buy the biggest baddest gun only to leave it at home all the time because it is uncomfortable to carry. This does no good because you will not have it when you need it. A hit to a critical area is going to cause a system failure whether it is 9mm or 45 ACP. Dolomite

Knoxville Gun Show...What to expect?
Dolomite_supafly replied to Bubbatn's topic in Events and Gatherings
I generally use the gun shows to actually touch and item before I order it from somewhere else. It is hard to tell how something feels on a computer screen or the quality. I do this mostly with scopes. About the only things I regularly buy at gun shows is reloading supplies and rimfire ammunition. Other than that I just order what I want off of the internet. As everyone else has said, private sellers is where you are going to find your deals. Generally before certain hunting seasons is when the deals pop up. Before turkey you could find hunting rifles all over because people were selling them to finance their turkey guns. Now that turkey season is almost over you will more than likely find more shotguns for sale from private individuals as they are no longer using them and are probably looking for something else. Never look for a particular firearm right before a hunting season that uses that firearm, like a deer rifle right before deer season. And finally, don't be afraid to haggle. Even dealers are open to haggling if it leads to a sale. I have never found a person who wouldn't haggle over price or accessories. Dolomite -
The way I take the scoring is a positive number is good for the bad guy and bad for you. A negative score is bad for the bad guy and good for you. This is for the first test. Dolomite ETA: Murder score is 10 Burglary score is 24

I got a -30. Friends of mine consider me a bit more cautious than most. I even carry a gun to the mailbox or if I sit outside on my porch. I do this mostly because of the escalation of events in the last 6-9 months that have placed my family and I in danger. The danger still exists but I am trying to be as prepared as possible. A little idea of what I am talking about. Back in the first part of October I had SWAT members in the creek in front of our house guarding my house from my brother. My brother had stated he was going to kill us. He had left our parents house with a loaded AK in a rampage after assaulting our mother over drug money. After he assaulted our mother he had a minor standoff with police but all charges were later dropped because of my mother lying for him and the charging officer not being present when he appeared before the judge. My brother is a HEAVY drug user (meth, crack, MJ, oxy) and drinker. He became enraged and assaulted our mother when she refused to give him more money for his drugs. She has even racked up $50K of debt on his drugs because he threatens to kill himself if she doesn't give him money. Personally I think he has threatened her as well but she said he didn't. He hates my family and I because we told him no more cash. We went on to tell him that if he needed something we would buy it for him, gas, food, etc. He did not like the fact he couldn't get his $30-$50 a week anymore and has refused to talk to us after that. He has said things implying he is jealous of the fact we live better than him. He has even went as far as saying we owe him because we make more money than him and that we should share our money. I have always tried to be fiscally responsible and because of this I have no bills other than a mortgage and car payment. And as such I am able to buy "toys" my brother can't. Before all of this happened my father called me saying my brother had a shotgun and wouldn't let him leave. I contected LE to try to get things resolved. Afterwards I told my father he was crazy for letting my brother do the things he does. I told him that neither of us need anymore of the stuff my brother was doing and that I would call the cops the next time something happened. My father told me that the cops don't need to be involved and if I brought them to his house he would "take care of me", implying he would kill me. I later found out my father may have been involved in something illegal as well. That was the last time my father and I have talked. It was brought on by the fact that my father called me saying my brother had a shotgun and wouldn't let him leave. So I am a bit more cautious than most because I have a brother who has had intentions on more than one occasion to harm my family and I. This on top of the fact my father, who has had the cops at his house, has threatened to harm me if they ever did show up. There is a lot more than this that has gone on but I am not going to get into anymore of it. I am just trying to recover the best I can or at least try to live a normal life after my helicopter accident in a third world **** hole in 2008. Life for my family and I is hard enough as it is without the additional problems they seem to like to burden us with as well. Dolomite

Is there any way to remove an engraving from glass?
Dolomite_supafly replied to Slappy's topic in General Chat
If it was etched by sandblasting it I would do the same to cover it. Maybe use tape to make a frame around what you want to remove then media blast it. I would think it would look better. If it was actually engraved I am not sure if you can remove enough through sanding and polishing to make it look decent. Dolomite -
Also, how old is your son? The reason I ask is if he is younger and just wanting an AR you may want to look at some of the 22lr versions. They make excellent training tools for anyone and are cheap to shoot. Dolomite

Rigth now S&W seems to have a pretty decent deal on their M&P 15's. They can be found for around $800-$900. As long as the parts are milspec, which most are, then you shouldn't have any problems. STAY AWAY FROM VULCAN, HESSEE, BLACKTHORNE. THEY ARE JUNK FROM TEH SAME COMPANY. THEIR PRICES ARE AMAZING BUT THEY ARE JUNK AND NOT WORTH THE MONEY EVEN IF IT IS CHEAP. Dolomite

I prefer velocity to mass. When doubling the velocity the energy goes up by a factor of four. By doubling the weight it only doubles the energy. Something else that comes into play with higher velocity rounds is hydrstatic shock. Some people believe in it some don't. Hydrastatic shock is the damage caused by the pressure wave of the impact and can travel a lot farther than the permanent wound cavity and even the temporary one as well. Think of it like being punched in soft tissue, although there isn't any visible damage it still causes pain and damage. This hydrastatic shock occurs more readily when velocity is higher. This is what makes lightweight 223 rounds so violent compared to the heavier versions. The 9mm is more capable of generating the hydrastatic shock because of the higher velocity. I carried a 45 for years and still miss my last 1911 but prefer fast rounds to the slow heavy 45. Because I believe so strongly in the hydrastatic effects of fast lightweight rounds I am going to be building a 1911 in 7.62x25 Tokarev. Having a bullet travelling at 1400-1500 FPS is going to have a masive hydrastatic shockwave even with a FMJ. I did some testing of some 90 grain FMJ 9mm rounds. Most people would agree that they are the worst because they generally pass right through with little to no damage. What I did was push those little bullets to 2000+ FPS to see how they performed. The didn't exit a 1 gallon jug and absolutely destroyed the jug. When the same rounds were fired at a more sedate 1100-1200 FPS they went tright through a jug but when the velocity was increased the hydrastatic shock caused so much more damage. Dolomite

Keep us updated on this. Anyway you shake it they are in the wrong and now they are just being greedy by not giving you the firearm then charging you a restocking fee on a firearm that isn't leaving their possession. They are crooks and I would contact local LE, possibly the DA, to determine the legality of charging a restocking fee for something they will not let you have after you have paid for and been approved to take possession of. Or what about the legality of them keeping the firearm you have been approved for and paid for. What needs to happen is their phones get called non stop until they change their BS policy. Of course there is no reason to jeopardize your transaction by doing this before everything is resolved, unless you want of course. There would probably be nothing more disturbing to a small business for hundreds of potential customers swear to never shop with them ever again. Letting them know you will try to discourage everyone you meet from shopping with them can knock a little sense into them as well. There are other national companies that do the same. I even heard of a MAJOR stock maker who didn't have a rifle stock in stock at the time an order was placed online. When the customer called the maker he was told the stock wouldn't be available for 6+ months. When the customer tried to cancel the order he was charged a 15% restocking fee, on an item not in stock, as well as a order cancellation fee. This wasn't a custom stock but a regularly stocked item that just happen to be on backorder from the supplier. Any business that charges a restocking fee on something that never leaves their possession is a crook in my eyes and will never see one red cent of mine. Dolomite

If you are LE, MIL, medical personnel or a holder of a current TN armed guard license you can get Glocks for LE pricing which is either $397 or $399 (I can't remember the exact price). That is for any standard frame, base model Glock. This should be standard pricing or at least it is at a Knoxville area dealer. I do believe the large frames are a bit more but not really sure because I have never bought a large frame. Dolomite

I do the same exact thing EVERY time I ship stuff. I reinforce all the edges with packing tape. I have never once been told I needed to pay extra for doing this. I have even hacked together numerous large flat rate boxes to ship bigger items and still only get charged for the rate of a single box. I did this with every scope I shipped and never a second glance. Sounds like someone working at the Post Office is on a power trip. Dolomite

Here is the list that everyone has started to go by when buying complete firearms. I am not sure where RRA would be on the list or even if they would make the list. With that being said there are a lot of people out there who own and enjoy RRA rifles. Would I trust it with my life? I am not sure but it is better than nothing. Makers to avoid: VULCAN, HESSE, BLACKTHORNE (they are all the same maker and make cheap junk that is out of spec or breaks easily). I never really got into drinking the Colt koolaid. Although they make a good rifle but for the money a better rifle can be built for the same amount or a comparable rifle for less. Also, the reason they have large pin and small pin receivers is they sometimes drill the holes out of spec. Rather trash them like most others they just open the holes up to a larger diameter and presto you have a large pin receiver. So the large pin receivers are nothing more than a fix for a screw up while making them then sell them to the public because they are technically out of spec for the military. I know it is a money saving measure but I don't think there is anything else that has caused more confusion in the AR market than the large/small pin issue. My personal AR is one I built about four years ago. Since then it has probably got 2000+ rounds through it and I have never had a single issue ever, not even when new. It shoots very well with my handloads, as in under and inch good at 100 yards. When I built it it cost me less than $800 and I have added about $200 worth of stuff to it not including the optics to improve it/customize it for me. If you do get one I would get a 22 conversion kit so you can practice shooting for cheap. The kits can be had for less than $200 and will pay for themselves very quickly. I have literally fired well over 10K rounds through mine during practice/training. They make full size magazines that are reliable. I would recommend a few things before buying a bunch of goodies for your rifle, if you do decide to get one. Find other people with an AR and try out their setups to see if you like and accessory before buying it. I have literally spent the cost of the rifle on accessories that now sit in a box in the garage because I thought I would like them but actually hated them. Also, there is a lot of junk out there since the explosion of the popularity of the AR in the last few years so definitely ask before buying. I would have absolutely no problem trusting my rifle with my life. I used to work in high threat enviroments (until my helo accident) and take that statement very seriously. It has proven to be 100% reliable with every ammo tested and reasonably accurate with most. Just some thoughts of mine Dolomite And as SL1M offered, if there is any other questions feel free to ask. There are plenty of knowledgeable people on here that will steer you in the right direction.

The problem is that the representatives in Washington don't listen to who they are representing. It doesn't matter what we, or the nation as a whole, thinks because they are still going to do what they want without listening to the voices that elected them. In the hours prior to the last TARP bill Nancy Pelosi's said her office had received over 95,000 calls letting her know they did not want that passed. She went on to say she was going to do what is right and that people did not know what was the right thing to do. I watched her say this on CSPAN and it only makes me think that most other representatives feel the same way, common people don't know what we need to take care of ourselves. One of two things is going to happen. Either the current members are going to lay low and hope to get re-elected then at the end of the next term go crazy and pass everything knowing they are going to loose the majority. Or what I think is going to happen, They are realizing that the current group of representatives is going to be voted out. So now they are going to try to pass everything they can right before they get voted out. I suspect there is a lot more on the agenda than what is coming to light. I used to monitor govtrack for upcoming trends but I quit about a year ago. I guess I need to start watching it again. Dolomite

Urban hunter - next meal scampering by...

Racoon isn't that bad at all, I've had it a few times. What I actually really like is ground hog. It almost tastes like roast beef when it is roasted in the oven. I have probably tried almost any animal at some point in my life. I haven't had any wild game in nearly a decade. I quite hunting for sport in 2001 and other than the occassional nuisance animal haven't killed since then either. I don't look down on hunters or anything like that, it just became something I don't like to personally do anymore because if I don't need to kill it I don't. Dolomite -
I have asked at the Home Depot in East Knoxville and told no except on certain days. I have gotten discounts on large purchases though, like $2K+. Dolomite

Sounds great, I use them for my wife's 45 ACP bolt action. I use small rifle primers for it. Thanks again Dolomite

Don't chuck them! I use only small primer 45 ACP brass. I have about 500 pieces as it is but would gladly take more. Dolomite

Shooting pests (Squirrel, Rabbit, Etc) in Knoxville with an airgun?
Dolomite_supafly replied to a topic in General Chat
If you don't mind the gifts the cats leave for their masters . We have 4 cats, all go outside at some point. With that everyday we have some sort of present left in front of the door. The biggest is a rabbit so far but they have left many other things through the years. I didn't think we had flying squirrels around anymore but last year the cats left a few for us. I have even had one cat who tried to attack and run off a racoon. Dolomite -
Although the ammunition may not explode it may cause the ammo to get hot enough to cause a problem from increased pressures if fired hot. Not sure of caliber but it has been issues for some people. An alternative might be to take the magazine into work with you and leave the handgun out in the car. Dolomite
