Recieveing Threats from a HCP?
Dolomite_supafly replied to Smith's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
After being arrested but before my brother's court case I went to the clerks office to get one. I had one in hand that had been signed and approved by the judge but knowing how things can turn I asked if my brother could get a retaliatory order against me. The judge stated he would sign my brother's order of protection against me as well. I asked how it was possible and he said he would take his word just like he took mine even though my brother was sitting in a cell with charges pending. I have clearances that that I must maintain as part of my work (if I ever heal up enough to go back to work after my helicopter accident). If he would have gotten one against me my clearances would have been revoked without question. I would have probably lost my HCP as well. I kind of laughed at the judge and said I have more to lose than my brother. I crumpled up the restraining order and asked a cleark to throw it out while I stood there talking to the judge. He said I didn't need to throw the restraining order away but as he walked away he said that peice of paper isn't going to stop a bullet either if your brother wants to kill. I again laughed and at that point my wife grabbed my arm and said it wasn't worth the hassle. Dolomite -
Recieveing Threats from a HCP?
Dolomite_supafly replied to Smith's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
I'll give some personal light into a similar situation that I went through regarding threats by a third party. My father called me stating in essence that my brother, who is a heavy drug user, was holding him hostage at gunpoint. I told him I was calling LE and my father stated my brother stated he would kill anyone who called LE. My father stated my brother would know when I contacted LE. I contacted LE by going to the SO in person. I spoke with the sheriff who stated that because my father didn't call LE that my statement that he was being held hostage was heresay. I asked about what my father had said about my brother stating he would kill anyone who contacted LE, including me. Again it was heresay because the threat did not come directly from my brother but came through my father. In the end the sheriff said they would do nothing unless my father called to file a compalint. I asked about a welfare check on the residence and was told if LE showed up to do a check and had to kill my brother that LE would be held accountable because they had no probably cause to be their other than heresay. My father didn't contact LE that day or in subsequent days out of fear of what my brother would do. This all occurred on September 23rd last year. The first week of October my brother tried to make good on his threats to kill anyone who contacted LE. On that day he assaulted our mother then left the residence with a AK-47 stating he was going to kill my family and I. I received the call from dispatch notifying me of my brother's intentions. LE responded and my brother fleed into the woods before reaching our house. He had a standoff with LE in which he threaten their lives as well. I had SWAT team members in a creek on my property watching the house until they located my brother. After he was located and subsequently arrested he threatened suicide and was taken to a mental hospital for a eval. In light of his threats of suicide as well as statements by my mother, my brother was released and all charges dismissed although his AK-47 was confiscated. In the end I learned that unless it is a direct threat it does absolutely no good to notify LE. My brother is still telling people he is going to make good on his threat to kill me he is just not threatening me directly so their is nothing I can do. I know it is coming, it is just a matter of time. Dolomite -
Being overseas A LOT I was able to see how scrwed up the American media is. All the time I would see a story of importance about the US on a foriegn news networks but never see it mentioned on any US based media. I would call back to ask family and friends about what was being reported and was almost always greeted with the same thing "WTF are you talking about?". Even to this day I try to watch foreign based news because they seem like they are less driven by politics or a personal agenda. Dolomite

+1 I hit a deer a few years back. Insurance came out, took a few pictures then said get it fixed. It did not raise my rates at all because it was an act of god. I was actually able to work a something out with the insurance company so I didn't have to cover the deductible as well. Dolomite

I live just east of Knoxville and we have seen a bear with som regularity here. She gets seen about every 3-4 months and lst year she had a cub with her. She was seen last week around a local lake. Last year she scared the crap out of my wife who thought it was a deer making a recket in the woods behind our house. She went to see the deer the realzed that is wasn't a deer. Hog hunting would be the only type of hunting I think I could get into. I haven't hunted anything for sport since 2001 other than squirrel with my brother a few years ago. That trip was more for him than me. I do kill nuisance animals but other than that the only things I hunt are steel targets and paper. Dolomite

If I am not mistaken the American CLassic .45 ACP you are talking about is made by Bersa. Here are a few at Buds Gun Shop: $424 shipped for a decked out one $411 for a base model If parts will interchange relatively easily they are a steal. I know all parts need to be hand fitted anyways but I am talking major modifications to get the parts in. I swapped out a bunch of parts in a Llama once. It was doable but I would never do it again. The refrigerant that is a big no-no to release into the atmospere is R-12. It hasn't been used in cars for 20-25 years. R-134 is supposed to be enviromentally friendly or at least more so than R-12 which does deplete the ozone. There are regulations concerning the release of R-134 but I believe the fines are no where near as high as for releasing R-12. R-12 pricing is was well over $600 for a tank the size of a propane grill tank while R-134 is relatively cheap. On to your car, if you are unsure about what you are doing take it to someone who knows and have them check it out. It shouldn't cost much for someone to diagnose the problem. If you try to correct a problem without knowing exactly what it is and do more damage it will be way more to repair the damage. So far I have heard too much refrigerant and too little, kind of 50/50 chance. Get the wrong one and you could ruin the compressor. If it is low on refrigerant then adding some can be done at home but if it is anything more serious you could actually do more harm by trying to fix it yourself. Dolomite

There is a mid 70's Licoln Continental done the same way in the Knoxvile area. It is tan and as HUGE as a boat but as in all things unsual or unique I thought it was cool no matter how impractical it might be. Dolomite

I generally keep everything I remove. The reason I do is because on more than a few occassions friends have needed the parts after theirs have failed. Also, if your upgrade parts fail at least you can use the original parts to put the weapon back in service without waiting for replacements. Dolomite

I carried a Charter Arms Bulldog in 44 SPC for a long time. I absolutely loved the gun and for the life of me can't figure out what I was thinking when I traded it. I would grab it if I didn't want to or feel like carrying a full size 1911. I never had any problems with mine, always went bang when it was supposed to. I honestly do not know how they compare size wise to some of the other recommendations. It might be a little bit bigger but you are also starting out with a bigger round as well. Dolomite

Still not bad, when I used to have a few hotrods I would buy the AvGas for them to run on. It was cheaper than buying racefuel and actually ran better. The last time I bought some it was around $2.60 a gallon at the airport when premium was running $2 and racefuel was $4+ a gallon. I was told the AvGas was between 108 and 116 octane which really helped bring the high compression engine I would run to life. Dolomite

I think the biggest problem you are going to have is putting a value on it. Most people do not understand having a gun fitted as well as the cost of quality accessories. All they are going to see is a Beretta shotgun and assess your value based on the value of the cheapest Beretta they can find unless the person doing the assessment is a "gun guy". Even if the person is a "gun guy" they are still only going to offer the minimum initially. I used to deal a lot with muscle cars and would see the same thing. "It is a 30+ year old car, how much value could it have?" I suspect you are in for a long hard battle to get what you are actually out. I haven't dealt with problems with airlines before but I have with other organizations. In my cases they would and are trying to wear my resolve down in an effort to make me settle for less than what I am entitled to. Dolomite

Simplified gun law for Tennessee.

Having a few drinks does impair judgement, even a single drink can impair judgement for some. Allowing people to carry a handgun while consuming alcohol will lead to problems, probably not by the majority of HCP holders or even the majority of the populace. The ones that will cause us problems are the idiots that start out with impaired judgement, add alcohol and it only gets worse from there. We have all said to ourselves "what was that idiot thinking?" after seeing or reading what they had done. It is those idiots who scare me more than anything and are going to cause us the most problems if they are allowed to drink while carrying. I just think giving up a few drinks with dinner is worth it to keep the idiots, with their impaired judgement, from drinking and carrying. Dolomite -
You will also be amazed at the quality of the ammunition. There is no ammunition I can buy that compares to my handloads. When you compare quality you are getting a huge deal. For me it would cost me over $1 each to buy the rounds I make for 28 cents each. My primary rifle when I started reloading would shoot around 3/4"-1" at 100 yards and when I dialed in a handload the same gun shot .3's regularly. Like SpacemanSpiff said, you will not save any money by reloading but what you get to do is shoot more often with better quality ammunition. If you have any questions feel free to ask, there is plenty of knowledge on this board. Dolomite

Simplified gun law for Tennessee.

I understand but the bad guy needs to bear some responsibility. Maybe hold the bad guy for 50% and the property owner for 50% but if the bad guy cannot cover his 50% the property owner takes up the bad guys slack. Or maybe the property owner is held liable for 100% with the provision the bad guy pays any restitution to the property owner. I just don't want the bad guy to get off relatively penalty free. Especially in today's sentencing climate when a bad guy might be able to plea out to a much reduced sentence. In you dog analogy your dog would be penalized by being put to sleep unless it was justified in biting and in that case you would not be held responsible anyways. Dolomite -

I would like something in the law holding the business/ property owner partly responsible for all damages that could have reasonably been prevented if patrons were allowed to carry a firearms for self defense. Example: I am having dinner in an establishment that does not allow me to carry my defensive firearm. During dinner a bad guy comes in and with a deadly weapon injures my family, myself or innocent bystanders because I am not allowed to defend myself. These injuries could have been reduced or prevented if myself or someone else had been armed and intervened. Because the property owner denied the patron the means to defend themselves they should be responsibility for part of the damages that occurred during teh assault. The damages should be split between the business/ property owner and the bad guy. I hope it is understandable but in my mind it seems pretty clear. Dolomite -
TN sales tax on pistol bought online and shipped from another state?
Dolomite_supafly replied to a topic in General Chat
I recently found out that you may be charged state sales tax if the online vnedor has a store location inside the state. I purchased something online from Walmart and was charged state sales tax. I called as well as emailed and was told that new federal law allows online vendors to collect sales tax if they have a retail store within the borders of the state. I know Walmart does but I am not sure about other online retailers. Not sure who you are going to be ordering from but I would double check to make sure they do not have a retail location within the state. Dolomite -

DO WANT: Army Begins Shipping Improved 5.56mm Cartridge
Dolomite_supafly replied to G27's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
You will probably not see it come to market as loaded ammunition. If I am not mistaken a law was passed a few years back making it illegal to sell complete loaded military ammo to civilians. Most of the stuff you see is stuff manufactured before the law went into effect. That is why we haven't seen any current manufacture loaded military ammunition for sale, components yes but not any loaded ammunition. If you have seen loaded surplus ammunition for sale is more than likely built from components sold seperately. It is perfectly legal to buy the bullets, the powder, and the brass then build your own. With that being said the components is what you will probably see come up for sale. They say it is based on the Trophy Bonded Bear Claw so that might be used to duplicate the round once the specifics on velocity are released. Personally there are better ammuntition for the asking price of most of the surplus now. Most M855 is crazy high since the law went into effect. Dolomite -

Even if the ballistics are better I do not believe that they are going to be so much better that it renders current ACOG's obsolete. The differences in elevations of Afghanistan are going to cause more problems than a round that is a bit better ballistically. It is the same weight so it would have to more than likely be going faster to be ballistically superior in my eyes. Also, when they were looking for ballistically superior rounds I believe they are for better performance on hard targets more so than long range accuracy. Here are a few quick numbers through JBM calculations comparing differences between elevation and velocity changes. With a 25 yard zero, a velocity of 2900 FPS, using the ballistic coefficient of .234 which the M855 round that has: At 600 yards M855 drops roughly 86" when the elevation is 500 feet above sea level. Now at 6000 feet the round drops roughly 73", 13" less. I have been in areas over there where the elevation was close to 8000 feet and at that range the round drops 70", 16" less. All calculations are exactly the same except the elevation. So going from 500 feet above sea level to 8000 feet reduces the drop by 16" making the bullet strike 16" higher than at 500 feet above sea level. Think about it a shot aimed at center chest at 8000 foot elevation is going to more than likely fly over the head of the bad guy at at 600 yards if the gun was zeroed at 500 foot elevation. If I increase the velocity to 3000 FPS changes the drop is 77" at the same 600 yards with an elevation of 500 feet. Jump to 6000 feet of elevation and the drop is 66", 11" less. At 8000 feet elevation it is 63" of drop at 600 yards giving 14" less. The difference between the two when compaing only the velocities at 8000 feet above sea level is only 7", meaning a shot aimed at the center of the chest will not over shoot the target. This is the reason I believe any added velocity will have less of an effect than enviromental changes most soldiers will encounter. We are not even taking into account humidity, pressure levels or temperature which all have an effect on ballistics. The stadia lines on an ACOG might be calibrated for a certain round but enviromental conditions create more problems with the calibrated scope than an increase in velocity. The ACOG is designed to be minute of bad guy and it does this well. It will also shoot minute of bad guy just as easily with the new round just as it did with the old round. It is the envirometal factors that will cause problems. Dolomite -
I appreciate it. I did throw a few rounds across it today. It is surprizing what kind of velocity I was getting from my 16" AR, actually kind of depressing. The load was a near max load of Varget with a 40 grain V-Max yet it only gave me an average of 2743 for 5 shots. The Remington 7.5 primers were starting to flatten so I know the pressures were starting to rise. I would have thought the velocity would have been more. I am going to try to find a powder better suited for my AR but that will also work with the long barreled bolt gun I plan on putting together in the next few months. My middle of the ground 69 SMK's had an average of 2371 with Varget as well. This load is an accuracy load though and not a supped up load. It saves brass as well as wear and tear on my gun. Best part about all this testing is I can punch the ACTUAL velocities in my ballistics programs on my Iphone. Without having to guess I should have no problems getting hits at 400+ yards now. Before I was just guessing based on published data. They must be using some long barrels to get the velocities that are published. Dolomite

I actually got invited to go shoot at a personal range Friday morning in the Morristown area. He said he has 1000 and could stretch to 1200. I don't have anything that can reach out past 600 at the moment. He also has lines on a 1 mile range that is local. Problem is we need more people because it will be more of a production with going back and forth between the line and the targets. Need 4 wheelers and such to go back and forth. I do a lot of subsonic stuff so most of my builds are geared towards that. I am getting ready to put together a 223 to get to 1K. Right now I have a AR I use for most of my distance shooting. I know I could get a better caliber to get to 1K but I am very recoil sensitive since my helicopter accident. I had a 308 but sold the barrel once I realized I would never be able to shoot it again then used the action for a 45 ACP build. Thanks for the invite, I appreciate it. Dolomite
