TN permit holders vs those who actually carry
Dolomite_supafly replied to Erik88's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
I carry everyday and everytime I am more than a few feet from my house. I walk to the mailbox with a firearm. I go to the store with a firearm. I carry a full size 1911 and before that a G17. I feel comfortable with both and have no complaints other than the occasional poke when I get into a vehicle. The reason I carry is mostly because my brother has tried to kill my family and I twice. The most recent was almost a year ago. He is a long time drug user and has supposed mental problems but that is up for debate because he only acts out with people that coddle him. He got upset when I refused to give him any more cash. I told him I would buy him whatever he needed but no more cash. Then he got really upset when I contacted LE after my father called me saying my brother was holding him at shotgun point. Because I contacted LE my brother felt he needed to kill my family and I. According to dispatch, when they called me, he had said he was armed and heading to my house afterassaulting our mother. I had LE as well as a SWAT team guarding my house until they tracked him down and when they did he was in fact in possession of an AK47. My brother has started to tell everyone again that he is going to kill us so it is just a matter of time before he tries again. I have total strangers come up and warn me. I can only be so prepared and we have modified the way we live to accomodate the threat. And for those that will ask, the reason why he hasn't been put in jail is because of his supposed mental status. They put him in Lakshore or Pennisula for a few weeks then declare him stable and release him. For me carrying everywhere is very important for both my family and I. And the one day I did go without a firearm I felt helpless. Dolomite -
Sounds like a plan. I just emailed the corporation that manages Outback Steakhouse about some restaurants being posted. http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/handgun-carry-self-defense/46896-recent-stoney-river-success.html#post612615 Dolomite

I have decided to write another prominant chain of restaurants in the area. OSI Restaurant partnership is responsible for the Outback Steakhouse, Carrabba's Italian Grill, Bonefish Grill, Flemming's and Roy's. Concerned by the fact that not all of these restaurants are posted to prevent firearms I suspect that individual managers are making these decisions and not the corporate management. This is the same way the manager of the Stoney River restaurant acting. So I have sent this: I went here and went to the realestate part of the drop down menu. It and the gift card selections where the only ones with a box for comments. Maybe we can get the same success with the various restaurants under OSI that we did with Stoney River. Dolomite

Thanks goes out to all of you who decided to contact corporate and voice your opinion regarding this. What needs to happen now is for us to use this small victory as motivation for us to change the status of another establishment. Corporations will listen and I believe that in the economy we are in right now most would be willing to accomodate almost any group of people for more revenue. Anyone have any ideas of what the next conquest should be? Dolomite

I am sure she will let us all know when she gets her HCP. At that point I may talk to her more about carrying but I do believe it will probably be fruitless. At least she will be one more one the HCP list . As the list grows so does our influence on the politicians so even though she isn't carrying at least the act of having a HCP is a good thing for us. There are a few semi autos but they are generally either expensive or crap. There are a few makers who are producing AR's chambered in the round but they are expensive. But when you consider the cost savings they would pay for themselves quickly if you shoot a lot. The Tokarev round is also a fun round. I think it is a very good caliber and if the ammo makers would make some decent ammo using modern technology it would be a very good SD round. I have had a few rifles chambered in the round, a couple of AR's and a couple of Savage bolt actions. Here is the last Savage I chambered in the 7.62x25 Tokarev. I would use it to shoot heavy subsonic reloads as well as cheap surplus. The subsonic Tokarev loads I worked up are actually being used by a few people now that are producing the AR chambered in the Tokarev round. The subsonic rounds will never hit the mainstream but makes for a very quiet gun with a suppressor. The Tokarev uses a .308' bore rather than the .311" like the AK. This makes finding reloading components easy. Here are pictures of the last Tokarev build: The tube is a tensioning sleeve that fits over the barrel then the muzzle nut is tightened down to tension the barrel. I first did this to try to fix a heat related drift problem I had with a rifle and it worked great. Before after about 5 rounds the bullets would start walking and by round 10 they were 1"+ off of zero but after I could shoot long strings without any drift. It seems to work out to be similiar to a bull barrel as far as stiffness goes yet is lighter weight. I actually used do a lot of odd projects, over the years some have worked and some haven't. I considered the Tokarev rifle a success because it did exactly what I wanted it to. It was also cheaper to build, load and shoot than the 300 Whisper. And as long as I stay subsonic there were no difference between the two. Reamers, dies, brass are all cheaper and available while the 300 Whisper tends to be expensive on all counts unless you decide to make your own brass but the dies and reamer as more expensive than the Tokarev's. The Tokarev let me shoot cheap surplus or my subsonic handloads. Even without a suppressor is was a quiet gun. My previous build used a 24.5" barrel and was as quiet as a 16" 10/22 shooting CCI subsonics yet with the heaviest bullets it developed muzzle energy that was comparable to a 357 magnum not to mention the ballistics were better. I did a lot of testing on stability also and rather than try to get a HP to open at subsonic velocities I was able to get it to readily tumble. This was more reliable and created more damage than just passing through. Also, the chance of tumbling only gets better as velocity drops while a HP opening it only gets worse. I did this by testing several different twist rates and getting the bullet just stable enough to be accurate yet unstable enough to tumble when it hit something. I got it to where the subsonic bullet would reliably tumble at 6"-10" of water. I have had to slow my projects substantially because I was in a helicopter accident in June of 2008 in some far away place. I know this is long winded but the Tokarev round is a very fun and powderful round in a rifle and if you get one you will have fun with it. Dolomite

TN permit holders vs those who actually carry

I was with my wife at the stable where she boards her horse and we were discussing HCP's. One of her friends named Becky, who is a middle aged women, said she was going through training in a few weeks to get her HCP. I asked her which school she was attending to make sure she was going to a decent one. Becky doesn't seem like she was a gun person or very knowledgeable, even for a women and I just wanted to make sure she got as much quality training as she could. She said she was being trained by a person who worked for the Sheriff's office. IAt that point I knew her training would be good so I ducked out of the conversation. At that point my wife asked her what kind of gun she was going to carry. My wife is looking around for something for her to carry and wanted to get some ideas of what other women were carrying. Becky laughed and said she would never carry a gun for self defense or otherwise. My wife asked why she was getting a permit then if she wasn't going to be carrying. Becky's said she just wanted to show the HCP instead of her DL when her ID was checked as she ordered drinks at a bar her and her other friends frequent. My wife was like "huh" with a confused look and Becky went on to say all her girlfriends all had them and she wanted one also to impress the waiter. My wife told Becky I had a permit and carried a gun all the time. She looked down at me and probably noticed my pistol peeking out from under my shirt. While at the stable I dress comfortably, even though I don't ride, so my handgun does peek out. At that point the lady the lady's attitude kind of changed. She acted like she didn't approve of me carrying as well even though she knew I had a permit. People are strange to say the least. It is her choice not to carry, I just don't like the idea that she is going to use her HCP to verify age at a bar. Dolomite -

Along with your boycott let corporate know how you feel. If they know what is going on then maybe they will make things right. If you just stop going they will have no clue to the reason why. Please take a few minutes and let them know so we can get this resolved. No other restaurant that they are part of has a sign posted that I have seen. Dolomite -

I would but that would put me over the 1800 character limit. I did use my real name though so they can see that I do frequent their restaurants often. I will cease to do so if this isn't resolved and so will our groups of friends who go there often. I am sure we are just a drop in the bucket of revenue but maybe they will see that allowing us will not keep others out yet limiting us will. Dolomite -

Here is what I plan on sending: It comes out as 1795 characters of the 1800. Click here then hit the "click here" under the "Gather 'round the campfire". It opens another window that allows you to put in some comments. The character limit is 1800 and I had to put in the first 3 paragraphs, let it figure the character count then put in the last one. I am in the process of writing a long letter to corporate expressing my concerns over this. It is not corporate policy to do this or at least I don't think it is because no other restaurant I have seen has a gunbuster sign. I eat very often at one of their restaurants and if they post I will go somewhere else. Corporate policy is one thing but a manager is obviously either too stupid to know the government didn't write the letter or is using the restaurant to support his personal views. Either way this shouldn't happen. Dolomite -
I did a lot of research before buying. From everything I was reading about the best parts of the gun are the frame and slide. Both are forged 4140 and fit together very nicely. Everything else can be replaced as the need or want arises to make the gun "yours". With a decent slide and frame as well as being a low budget gun this allows users to spend a little and get a lot. I can honestly say that out of the box these are the best sub $500 1911's and I would even say probably the best sub $750 guns. Put another $200 into them and they are comparable to most $1K guns. I have about $70 worth of dependability parts in mine and I couldn't be happier. By doing this it has rewarded me with a nice 3.5 pound trigger. It does have a little take up but I want it that way for a carry gun. I could file the foot on the beavertail and bend the pretravel tabs on the new trigger and have a gun with zero take up and near zero overtravel but as a carry gun I don't feel comfortable doing that. I would rather have a little overtravel than a gun that fails if it gets a littel crud in it. Dolomite

Springfield uses MIM parts, Colt uses MIM parts, Wilson uses MIM parts, S&W uses MIM parts and as a matter of fact almost every gun maker uses MIM to some degree. As a matter of fact the Springfield frames and slides are no longer made in the US. Want to check, take off the grips and it will be stamped with Imbel a Brazillian company. Not saying it is bad but just that it is made outside of the US. I didn't realize Gander was the warranty center for these pistols. I doubt I would ever use it because I do all my own work on them. In seeing your problems I am going to go ahead and buy a bushing to prevent any problem. I had already replaced all the MIM parts inside. I will be replacing the rest as time and money permits. Good reloading powders for handguns
Dolomite_supafly replied to The Legion's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
For 9mm I have used VV 3N38, Power Pistol, HS-6 and Longshot. For 45 ACP I have used Clays, Power Pistol, HS-6 and Longshot. I generally stick to the loads listed on the Hogdon website. I will try a few powders until I find one the gun likes and stick with it. But for the most part I like either HS-6 or Longshot for my 9mm and 45 ACP. I am still up in the air about Power Pistol in the 45 ACP. My wife has a bolt action chambered in 45 ACP and it doesn't seem to shoot well when I use Power Pistol. In a pistol it is fine but the rifle it doesn't. Shooting Clays in 45 ACP does make for a very miserly load. You can get close to 2000 rounds per pound. It also shoots a bit softer. I have tried up to 4.5 grains with a 200 grain bullet without seeing any signs of pressure but I would definitely work up to it because Hogdon's max is 4.3 grains. Dolomite -
Update Adobe Flash Player. Sometimes I get the same issue with You Tube that you are reporting. Updating or removing/reinstalling it has fixed it for me in the past. I could have been a fluke but the correlation seemed like it was there. Dolomite

Don't sell it because you will not be able to get the $570. Not when new ones are in the $425 range. Most people don't take upgrades into consideration, all they see is a RIA 1911. If you did want to sell it I would break it down and put it back all the factory parts then sell all your upgrades seperately. And honestly for $570 how much more weapon could you really get. Springfields are made overseas as well and anything better than them are well beyond the $570 range unless you buy used. Personally if it shoots as well as you say and is as reliable then I would keep it and upgrade it to your liking. There is very few external parts that you couldn't install yourself. The slide release is a drop in part. Most shops I have dealt with will install sights "while you wait" because it is a quick buck for them. Night sights are overated and unless you live alone you will have trouble identifying a bad guy if it is dark enough for you to need to use your night sights. I would advise against getting both front and rear night sights if you do decide you need them. I had both front and rear and found myself getting confused as to which was the front sight of the 3 dots I saw. Once I went to a front only it was a cake walk, after all you should be concentrating on your front sight anyways. Dolomite

I watched a lady pull up two carts to the checkout. The first cart was the EBT purchases. After paying for that they rang up the second cart of cigarettes, booze and a few other non EBT items. The lady, who was wearing a ton of nice jewelery, then pulled out a couple of hundreds from the wad she had and paid. My wife and I stood there dumbfounded because she obviously wasn't hurting enough to need food stamps. Dolomite

They had them at the last show in Knoxville. They were selling for $450-$475 depending on model and dealer. I can't say enough positive things about mine. They are also on gunbroker as well. Here is one for $450 shipped to your FFL. Dolomite

I wonder if my AC had any part in your decision to get the Hogue grip for yours? Have you shot it any more since you came over? I have about 100 more rounds thru mine. I tuned my trigger up to give me a 3 1/2 pound pull as well as very little take up and overtravel. Every time I shoot this thing it seems like it is getting better. I was getting one hole groups at 10 yards today while I was getting the sight set. I tweaked my rear sight a bit by opening up the notch a bit more and squaring the bottom. Definitely made for a better sight picture for me. Dolomite

I normally add wax and a few other things to my fine walnut media to help with cleaning polishing. My results have always been pretty good. My wife tumbles stones and she also adds plastic 6mm airsoft BB's to her media to help take up space and to help her media work better. I was needing to replace the walnut media because of a mishap. I didn't have enough to completely cover the batch of brass I was working on so I decided to add the same plastic airsoft BB's like my wife does for her tumbling needs. I have never tried adding the BB's to the walnut media before but I figured I would give it a try. I ran some 223 cases then some 45 ACP cases. I let both batches run for about the same time that I normally would but this time I was greeted with very bright and very smooth brass. Brighter and more polished than when I use actual polish in the media. Doing it with the plastic BB's even seemed to clean the inside of 45 ACP cases better than walnut media alone. They came out comparable to polishing in corn cob media. This can either result in quicker polishing or better than just using walnut media. I used no polish or any other additive, just the walnut media and the plastic BB's. Not really sure why the plastic BB's work but they definitely do or at least they did for me. Dolomite
