  1. I watched it and actually liked it. Nothing really new or unusual about the show but it was entertaining mostly because of the scenery. Also I think it will show a more down to earth side of her and her family. Now whether it will help or hinder any further political career it is hard to say. I don't believe that the show was harmful or scandalous like some would hope it wpuld have been. Dolomite

  3. Once a rifle always a rifle. If you shorten the barrel on a rifle to less than 16" it is still a rifle regardless of the stock it wears, even a pistol style stock. Once you get below 16" it will be a short barreled RIFLE, not a pistol. You can't take a rifle and legally convert it to a pistol, only into a short barreled rifle with the proper approval ($200 stamp). Even if you have a 16" barrel you must maintian at least 26" OAL or it will again fall into SBR status. Thompson Center series of pistols/rifles like the Contender and the G2 have exemptions from the BATFE which allow them to be converted back and forth at will so long as the barrel is never less than 16" while a rifle stock is attached because at that point it is a short barreled rifle. A shotgun with a barrel of less than 18" or OAL of less than 26" is considered an "any other weapon". It also takes approval to make an AOW which also costs $200 if you are the one making it. If it is made by another who has already paid the $200 then it is only $5 to transfer. The .410 pistols are legal because a portion of the barrel is rifled so it is not considered a shotgun but a pistol. It just so happens it is capable of firing a .410 shell as well as the 45 LC. As far as Taurus. I have owned one. It went bang every time but it wasn't a nice weapon. It felt cheap and the parts inside were made using a grinder. The worst part about the weapon though is it had Taurus on the side of it. I contacted Taurus about the fact the new pistol didn't have a frint sight. They wanted me to ship it in to install the sight rather than just mail me the sights. In the end they sent the wrong sights and refused to do anything else for me so I had to pay out of pocket to fix a brand new Taurus. 45 LC is far from the top of people killers. I would venture 22lr followed by 9mm would be the top two pistol calibers. The Judge while interesting is far from ideal for self defense. It is too large to carry and conceal if need be. Although 410 will kill you it is far from the best caliber out there. Even the 45 LC has its drawbacks. As far as your claims I would like to see and hear of your testing methods you used to come up with your conclusions. Just because a round is capable of killing a milk jug or pumpkins hardly makes it lethal. Look at Glaser Safety slugs, they will absolutely destroy a milk jug but have penetration levels in the 4" range. Hardly enough to reach the vitals in all but the starving Somali. I understand you like your Judge and I am not dinging you for it we are all saying it is far from the ideal self defense gun. The new ammo makes it a better 410 revolver but it is still a 410 revolver. Dolomite
  4. Already linked it to the OP in a PM. That is an easy trigger job, I do a few more things on top of that one to get a really nice trigger on an AR. The triggers on an AR are among the most simple ones out there. This makes tuning them a bit easier than most but it also make what you do more important because when you only have a couple of parts to tweak it is easy to mess things up. Dolomite

6.8 is better suited to shorter barrels than 5.56. The 5.56 was designed to use a longer barrel and needs it in most cases to get adequate performance. Now if you were to load the 5.56 with faster powders to make use of the shorter barrels you could improve performance but then you would run into other problems. The 6.8, by design, needs less barrel to perform well. I am a fan of fast over heavy because velocity quads the energy while weight doesn't. That is if you double the weight the energy only doubles while if you double the velocity the energy increase is inreased by a factor of four. Now energy is only used for comparisons because there is a lot more that goes into the ability to injured or kill.

All I was saying is a 223 regardless of bullet weight is at a significant disadvantage when you shorten the barrel. The bullets will not disrupt or even tumble. There are better choices than 223 when you are going to be using a barrel less than 10.5". And when firing from inside a vehicle a short barreled 223 is going to be very disorienting to say the least. Personally of you wanted a high capacity firearm for your car that is maneuverable I would grab a few high cap pistol mags for your weapon of choice. A 32 round mag for your Glock would fit the bill. It would carry more energy thru a car door than a short barreled 223 launching a 55 grain pill at 2200 fps. I am talking about short barrels not 16"+ guns. I have carried 10.5" guns as part of my work on numerous occasions. Towards the end I started using the longer guns because i preferred the advantage of the longer barrel over the convenience of a shorted barrel. Even today I prefer at least a 16" barrel. Dolomite

One more thing, if you are going to use an AR with a short barrel at least use a bullet that is likely to come apart at the reduced velocities because they are not going to tumble. Any of the polymer tipped bullets, like the Hornady TAP, would work better than most hunting or FMJ bullets. Hunting bullets were designed to be fired out of a full sized gun, not our shorter carbines and as such they do not perform well. Most bullets are designed in a lab under ideal conditions and fired out of a firearm optimized for the ammunition being developed. This is the reason we rarely see real world data match factory claims. Real life is rarely ideal and for most a firearm is a series of compromises in order to fit our individual needs. The ammunition we choose is the same, a series of compromises to meet our needs. Dolomite
  8. Buy a DMPS parts kit, they are about the best for the money. The RRA two stage trigger is going to have a lot of take up compared to a standard trigger. They are lighter but they do have more travel. Dolomite

I'll try to host the link above as well as a few other very informative pieces. I'll try when I get home. Dolomite Do not hot like this but copy and paste it into a new browser to open it: http://stevespages.com/pdf/5_56mm_military_info.pdf This is the penetration based on velocity: http://stevespages.com/jpg/bestbullet.jpg Again DO NOT HOTLINK. Open a fresh browser and copy the above URLS. The host has had issues with people hacking his erver so he has disabled a lot of differnt stuff including hot links.

Personally I think they are a waste other than a noise maker. The velocity is in the 22 magnum range out of the short, 7.5", pistol barrels and even some 10.5" barrels depending on ammo. With AR's you need either enough velocity to disrupt the bullet upon impact or the bullet needs to tumble in order for them to be effective. By slowing down the bullets they will not have enough velocity to cause the bullet to disrupt or come apart. And with most guns having faster twists the bullet will be over stabilized to a point they will not tumble, even at these reduced velocities. This will cause the bullet to pass right through. This is what is causing all of our service members problems overseas, too much twist and not enough velocity. As you reduce velocities from a starting point of where the bullet disrupts the penetration increases. That is say you have a 30 caliber bullet travelling at 3000 fps. The bullet disrupts as normal and has normal penetration. Now take that same bullet and drop the velocity by 1000 fps to 2000 fps. The penetration will increase substantially because the bullet no longer comes apart because it is no longer going fast enough. Bullets that would normally only penetrate 12" are now going to penetrate over 3 feet because they no longer come apart as designed. The same can be said for 223/5.56, if you don't have enough velocity the bullet will not disrupt or tumble. Here is an intersting read on the subject. Notice how almost all the bullets increase in their penetration as the velocity decreases. These findings mimic my personal testing I have done while doing work on subsonic loads. http://stevespages.com/jpg/bestbullet.jpg I would post the picture but it is huge because of the amount of data. If it were me I would just carry a full size rifle in your vehicle. If you have a HCP you can legally carry a long gun in your vehicle so long as a round is not in the chamber. I say either lock the bolt to the rear or leave it forward then insert a magazine. It could be made ready rather quickly and with the additional barrel length it would be more effective. Or if you must have a short barrel use a caliber that would work better with the shorter barrel like 7.62x39 or even a pictol caliber. You loose too much by using a short barrel with 223/5/56 in my opinion. Dolomite
  11. I started another thread about this but there is a lady who uses her food stamp card to buy tuna for her house cats. She doesn't try to hide it and actually kind of brags about it. She said that she will quit buying tuna when they allow her to buy cat food for her cats. I found this out while speaking to a cashier at our local hometown kind of store. The cashier said she was told not to question any purchases. I have also been there and witnessed it when the cashiers allow a purchase to be made on someone elses card also which leads me to believe there may be some type of selling going on like the old food stamp system. The biggest thing they could do to relieve some of the burden on the system is drug test all who receive public assistance. Do random annual testing and if they piss hot then take them off the rolls for one month on the first offense, six months for the second and permanently on their third. If they can afford illegal drugs then they can afford to pay for their own food. I honestly believe marijuana should be legalized but I, as a taxpayer, whould not be subsidizing their food so they can buy drugs. Dolomite

  13. Posting the shops contact information would be the best start right now for a couple of reasons. First one is to prevent anyone here from dealing with the shop and second so we can contact him to voice our concerns. I seriously doubt the ATF is going to do anything because telling someone to use smokelss powder in a blackpowder firearm isn't violating any criminal laws, yeah it is stupid and will get someone hurt but it isn't illegal. On the other hand having the shop's phone ring non stop for a day or two would probably push the point through more effectively. If the shop owner is on the phone constantly maybe it would prevent someone from getting his advice. Dolomite
  14. At some point he will be questioned about it by LE about the badge. Even though it is legal it can get him in trouble if it is appears he is acting in a manner similar to LE. At this point I believe everyone is right in the fact he wants one just to have it and not to prevent anything. If he wanted to prevent problems all he would need to do is cover his gun up. It isn't that hard with the right equipment but it doesn't sound like anything you are going to say is going to change his mind. Dolomite
  15. Next time you are going to be on the other end of Knoxville PM me. I'll take care of that trigger for you. I have done a lot and have a very safe and easy way to get a better trigger. They are no where near a two stage match trigger but they do make for a decent factory trigger. Dolomite
  16. Their lower parts kits are a bit rough compared to others but other than that just as good as any other "budget" AR. Dolomite
  17. I still don't believe the guy coming outside to tell them not to come back was instigating the situation. I don't believe his intentions were to start an altercation with three burly guys much less intend on pulling a gun. I do believe his intentions were to tell the three not to return and nothing more. At that point I believe the three burly guys became aggressive in some manner causing the single guy to become fearful and honestly who wouldn't. At that point the single guy knew he would not be able to defend himself against the three so he resorted to his only equalizer he had, a firearm. People are looking at it differently because one of the three are members here. Had someone on here posted "I pulled a gun on three big, burly guys who were going to attack me" most of the posts would be just the opposite. I know for a fact that if I had three big, burly guys aggressively coming at me I would probably pull a gun as well if I felt my life was in danger. We can only speculate on how the guy felt but if he felt as though his life was in danger he would be justified. We see it all the time on here, people tell others to say you were in fear for your life and all will be ok. This guy acted as though felt his life was in danger. Dolomite
  18. They are taking ammo from people again. Didn't get me again but if anyone lost their ammo to the security the show promoter will replace what you lost. It is illegal for them to take your property without cause. Just because there are signs posted they are not legally allowed to take your property. The only thing they can legally do is refuse admittance. I went thru this a few shows ago and even contacted LE and they stated security was breaking the law by taking my personal property. I was even advised to file criminal charges but I gave Rex, the show promoter, a chance to make things right. He did replace my ammo for me or at least his nephew did. Again, it is illegal for the show security to take your propert without due process and they can be charged criminally if you do decide tompush the issue. Today it was the old white haired guy doing it. This is the same guy who tells everyone it is illegal to sell guns outside. He is wrong there also. Dolomite
  19. I appreciate everyone's words and understanding. I came in here to vent because it does help. Unfortunately nothing I can say or do on here or in person is going to change anything. My brother is still a heavy drug user that wants me dead, my father is still goig ot be the same and my mother seems oblivious to it all. We will have no more family holidays other than my wife and I doing our own thing because my son should be leaving for the Air Force soon. He was my biggest worry and I think he has made it out relatively unscathed mostly because he was shielded from them once he came into his impressionable years. For my wife and I we will still live the way we have for a long time and deal with things as they come to the surface. We are prepared but you can only be so prepared before it starts to affect your life. Also, as some of you may know, if someone wants to get to you they will no matter prepared you are for to confrontation. Dolomite
  20. I normally use a punch and hammer to tighten the castle nut. It has worked dozens of times for me with no problems or them working loose. I do own a castle nut wrench but I still prefer to use a punch and hammer Dolomite
  21. The battle is never lost until it is over. Just because someone already as a gun drawn does not ensure they are going to hit their target. Most shots fired during a gunfight miss their intended target. Considering derringer guy only has two shots I would have taken my chances and drawn. After I draw I will give a bad guy a warning, if I can, before shooting and it sounds like I would have probably given the derringer guy a few warnings. I am always going to pull my gun unless the bad guy's gun is pressed against my head or the heads of my loved ones. I too prefer to walk away from a fight if possible but I will not lay down either. And to play devil's advocate here. You have three big and burly looking men being loud and probably obnoxious, normal acting people do not get asked to "turn it down". From the sounds of it your friend is a bit of a hot head and I am sure there were some other stuff that was said or done at the table after the guy asked you to "turn it down". After you finish the three of you leave and the person steps out to tell you "don't ever come back". He probably followed you out so as not to upset the other patrons if you guys became loud and obnoxious again. Now the three of you undoubtedly turn towards him and one of your buddys told the guy to kiss his ass. I am not sure what happened between the time your buddy told the guy to kiss his ass and the time the guy pulls his gun but if I had three big and burly looking men (your words not mine) who were loud and obnoxious act aggressive (remember it is in how it is perceived by derringer guy) towards me I would feel threatened as well. You gave no description of the guy with the derringer but I would seriously doubt he would feel he could defend himself in a fight between him and three big and burly looking men, especially if he was older or if he had medical problems. I am not saying the derringer guy was in the right because there isn't enough info here but I am saying there is probably more to it if he felt he needed to pull a gun, especially if the guy has been in trouble for it before. I have drawn on an unarmed group of people as well. It was in New Mexico and I was being surrounded by the group as I doing a quick search of their car. I do know that just because they are unarmed doesn't mean you can't be seriously hurt or killed. Dolomite
  22. Where I live there was an orange AMC Gremlin that sat on blocks at a prominent intersection. I used it all the time as a reference for people. Problem was most people had no clue what a Gemlin was. To that my response was always "you will know when you see it". Dolomite
  23. I also use Wolf and have no issues. I have tried numerous other brands but when I switched to Wolf my SD shrunk substantially. I will say this that Wolf primers are a bit harder to seat than any other brand I have triend but other than that they have been great. I use Small Rifle Magnum and Large Pistol. Dolomite
  24. Mine always gets taken to any shoots I go to. It is fun and cheap to shoot. And anybody can shoot it without much fuss. My wife liked it better than the 223 because of the muzzle blast. I always use it or my 22 lr AR to introduce new shooters to the AR because for some the 223 is too much noise and concussion. Dolomite
  25. Trust me I have tried everything as has my wife. We have tried being nice about it as well as being upfront with my mother about it. She doesn't want anything to change. My father is more of a mental abuser and as far as I know he has never been physical with her. I have had her show up at my door crying over stuff he does and says though. Him and I have had words several times about how he treats her but he doesn't see it and my mother tolerates it. Not sure what else I can do if neither of them are going to complain about it. I have even talked to LE about some of the stuff that goes on and they said unless one of the parties involved complained there was nothing they could do. Even when I got into specifics I was told it was heresay because they didn't witness it and the parties weren't complaing about it. The judicial system in my county leaves a lot to be desired. Even when I went to file a complaint about the death threats by my brother the court clerk said "open air" threats weren't against the law and nothing could be done. They did say I could sue in civil court for liable. I did a WTF, shook my head and walked out after a few more words between us becaue they have no clue about the law. Numerous officers said that unless my brother actually tries to kill me there is nothing they can do. When my brother was holding my father hostage I talked to the sheriff himself and he said his officers wouldn't go check because all they had was my heresay that something bad was going on. Anyway you shake it my mother and father have made the bed they are laying in and they seem to be comfortable in it. Dolomite
