Try the local highschool that has ROTC. I know the standard for me was 1903, M1 Garand and M14, all demilled of course. The M14 was able to be completely disasembled and other than not being able to chamber a round was fully functional. We even practiced function checks on them after they were reassembled. Dolomite

If anyone wants to look for me I'll be in jeans, black belt, tan boots, well worn black Ariat hat and a white button up shirt. It might be covered with a black and gray winter coat. I have short hair and a short, scraggly beard that is redish/ brown. I will have a 1911 on me as well. I am trying to get there by 9am but as I said before it depends on how I feel when I wake up at 4am-5am. Dolomite

Their scopes are pretty unreliable especially if you are making a lot of adjustments. Most people consider them junk even for their cheap prices. Now their other items seem to be a bit better. I have a rail light that has been used and abused for the last 3 years. It uses a CR123 battery and lasts quite a long time. It has never failed me and as I said before it has been well used. I have also had one of their green lasers. It too worked well and kept its zero. It only crapped out when I tried to turn it up but before that it worked well. I would say stay away from anything that is considered an optic but most other items work well for the money. I would nto trust NcStar stuff with my life but for a range toy or something non critical I wouldn't hesitate. Dolomite

I have been told by several people that Monarch is some of the more accurate "budget" ammo. I have never used any personally though. Dolomtie

I will probably be there if I am feeling up to it. I am feeling alright at the moment but I have to live day to day. I need to pick up some 7 round 1911 mags. Dolomite

Looks like 1/2 the AK's being held by Afghans. They will decorate them beyond anything on that site. The bedazzle them like a pro as well as hang everything from chains to small bells from their guns. I have seen their AK's wrapped in silk scarves as well as painted like they were minature jingle trucks. And for those of you who don't know what a juingle truck is: jingle truck - Google Search Dolomite

If you aren't going to reload then look at Walmart for plinking ammo. The Tula, as mentioned by OhShoot, is about the best deal there is on 223. Out of a 16" AR it runs about 2850 fps, not bad but not that great either. I works great in my AR but others have reported issues. Before buying a bunch I would try a few boxes. Anyone else notice how well he is shooting? Three shots on top of each other in fast succession. To me that is pretty impressive. Dolomite

Practice how you are going to fight. Most fights are rarely scripted and even the best plan rarely goes as envisioned. With that being said find your weak shooting positions and practice them relentlessly. When I was able to I would practice shooting from every conceiveable position possible with every conceivable weapon system. You never know when the fight is coming to you or what you will have at your disposal. I have practiced with everythign from a .22 to a shotgun and every caliber/weapon in between that I own. Look at building a V-Tac barricade for practice. A single sheet of 4'x8' OSB builds two of them. They have plenty of firing positions so you can practice a lot of odd shooting styles. With basic tools they can be built in a few hours for less than $30. There is a larger, printable version on this site: VTAC barricade - M4Carbine.net Forums Dolomite

Rather than pay the high prices for factory SBR receivers do this. Buy a regular AR receiver. Once in your posession fill out the paperwork for you to get approved, it is the exact same paperwork or at least close enough to be a mute point. While you are waiting on approval send the receiver off to have it engraved with your name, city and state. Generally less than $50 to have this done. In the mean time you can use your receiver in rifle configuration while you wait on approval of the shorter barrel. One more question, why a 7" barrel? That is if you plan on using 5.56. You loose so much from having such a short barrel. You are seriously in the low 2000 fps range with a 7" barrel. You also get tons of blast pressure that can be disturbing to say the least. Getting them to run can be a challenge as well. The problem is not the 5.56 cartridge itself, it is what the military has tried to do to "improve" it that has ruined it. The 5.56 needs barrel length to be as effective as it can possibly be. The next problem is barrel twist, too much twist and the bullet overstabilizes which leads to even more problems. An over stabilized bullet that doesn't have enough velocity to come apart upon impact will not tumble and will only punch a neat little hole through the target. Even if it does tumble it will likely be through most of our enemies in the middle east by the time it does. Most males over there are concentration camp thin. An Afghan male that weighs more than 130 pounds is a big Afghan and most come in under 110 pounds. They are very, very thin and as such we need a round that will tumble or fragment within the first few inches in order to eb effective on these targets. The military ruined the cartridge by increasing the twist and using heavier bullets. The heavier bullets require the velocity to be reduced this reduces the chance the bullet will disrupt on impact and the increased twist decreases the likelyhood of the bullet tumbling upon impact. Believe it or not but by taking the 5.56 and reducing the velocity to less than 2000 fps it will increase its penetration because the bullet no longer tumbles or disrupts on impact. This is the reason we are hearing of all the problems with it overseas. The military is trying to take a short to medium range caliber and turn it into a long range caliber. Here are some interesting reads on the effectiveness of the 5.56: Do not hot link this but copy and paste it into a new browser to open it: http://stevespages.com/pdf/5_56mm_military_info.pdf This is the penetration based on velocity: http://stevespages.com/jpg/bestbullet.jpg Dolomite

Not trying to split hairs, just trying to expound on the conversation. I was trying to clear up the process of getting a silencer. Dolomite -
The receiver must have been received or transferred as either a stripped receiver or a pistol receiver in order to be legally assembled as a pistol. If the receiver has ever been assembled or transferred as a rifle it can not be legally assembled as a pistol. A receiver that has been received or transferred as a stripped receiver or pistol can be assembled as either a rifle or pistol but not a combination, ie pistol length barrel on a rifle receiver. The only deviation is if your rifle receiver is a registered SBR and in that case you can put a barrel shorter than 16" on it. Any receiver can be assembled as a rifle but a rifle receiver can never be assembled as a pistol. By adding a buttstock the firearm becomes a rifle and must have a 16" barrel or be approved as a SBR. You can add a buttstock at any time but you must follow the rules for a rifle when you do. You can not have a barrel less than 16" and install it on rifle receiver without it being a SBR. The easiest way to remember" Once a rifle, always a rifle". With regard to the "multi" marking on the receiver it refers to caliber and not firearm type. Dolomite

Anyone can purchase a silencer from a maker or another but they can not legally take possession until the stamp comes back approved. It requires no paperwork or approval to purchase a silencer but it does take the tax stamp to take possession. I can get on the phone right now, pay for a silencer and have it shipped to a dealer before any paperwork is even started. They transfer the same way as a firearm between dealers. It is when you go to take possession that the extra paaperwork comes into play. The silencer will stay at the dealer until the paperwork is completed and the stamp comes back approved. Dolomite -
I seen them for sale for $99 including tax and TICS. Dolomite

And that stamp is only good for one NFA item. A single stamp does not permit ownership of multiple NFA items. Each NFA item must have its own approved stamp before owning the NFA item. The tax stamp is not a license but a tax levied by the government. The cost of the tax stamp for a silencer is $200, same as a MG. That is whether you buy one or make one but in each case you must have the approved tax stamp in hand before making or taking possession. The cost of the tax stamp for a short barreled shotgun is $5. It would be nice if there would be some sort of system of having a license to own several but that would eliminate the revenue generated by the government so that is likely to never happen. As far as a headache, it is no more of a hassle than getting a passport. The biggest headache is the current, 4-6 month, wait times. Dolomite -

It all runs in cycles it seems. One may be best this month then next month it goes to hell. Winchester 555's seem to be the best at the moment as far as consistently going bang, followed by Federal bulk ammo. In all the times I have tried Remington bulk I have never been really happy with them because they either don't go bang or are very inconsistent. If I was buying a lot of rimfire ammo without testing it first I would buy CCI as it seems to be some of the best out there. It is pricier but it is magnitudes better than most bulk too. If I had to buy bulk I would buy Federal Automatch or Winchester 555's. Dolomite

Where to find vegtables/carbs in the woods

Store rice, it is cheap enough to be able to stock pile a few months worth for very little money. Walmart sells it for $6/20 pounds. I have started storing the stuff in food safe containers and putting dry ice in the containers to displace the oxygen to keep the critters at bay and to help with oxidation. I am starting to do the same with beans now for protein in the event I can't find any through hunting. I am not doing a lot, just enough to keep the wife and I in food for long enough until a garden can produce. Dolomite -

At night I have my 1911 on my night stand, wife has her 1911 in her nightstand and both loaded with 230 grain PDX rounds. Flashlights on both nightstands. Close by is my wife's 9mm AR with light/laser and is loaded with Hornady FTX rounds. If I have more warning I'll grab my 5.56 AR and throw on a vest. Daytime, I always have my 1911 either on my person or within reach. The biggest part of my home defense strategy is the dogs. I have a pit and a boxer. Either one on their own would probably be a bad day but both together and it would make for a really bad day for who ever tried to cause us problems. As long as we let the dogs know "everything is ok" they are great, anything even a little off and they are ready. If we mention anything about a "bad guy" their attitude changes for the worse. There are those that actually need the system to survive then there are others who are using it as a means to defer living expenses while earn money in other ways, mostly under the table. We have all seen them, people in a nice car, wearing nice clothes and jewelery pull out their "card" to pay for food. Then they will use cash to pay for the items that can't be put on the card like alcohol and cigarettes. I have even been told of a lady who buys her cats tuna on her card. When asked she said she would continue until she could put cat food on the card. I guess because those are her kids it must be OK in her mind. Then there are those people who are content with nothing as long as they do not have to work for it. I see their living conditions and for most it would be untenable but they don't mind. There is nothing that you are going to say or probably do that is going to change their way of thinking and they will continue to do the bare minimum to keep from feeling hungry. For those on any type of government funded assistance there should be some very basic rules they must follow. If I were in charge, which isn't going to happen, these are the changes I would make. First and foremost, you must do something to help the community rather than sit on your butt all day watching the mailbox. Just because you are on welfare doesn't mean you can't pick up trash 5 days a week for a few hours each day. If you are disabled and unable to leave the house then you can do other things like stuffing envelopes or answering the phone for a government office. Second, you must submit to an annual drug test. If you are using government money to live on then you obviously shouldn't be able to afford illegal drugs. If you test positive then you lose you benefits for one month. Second offense then you lose benefits for 6 months and finally on the third offense benefits are gone for one calendar year. Third, you must not get caught breaking the law while on assitance. I don't care if you were in trouble before you received it or after you are off of assitance, just while you are currently receiving it. It isn't that hard to stay out of trouble, millions of people do it every day. We will use the same loss of priviledges as above. First offense, one month after getting out of jail. Second, six months a finally a year on the third arrest. Fourth, any money received through lottery, income tax or any other unexpected source must be used to pay back into the system you receive benefits from. Not all of it but say 50% of the amount received. Finally, if you are on assitance because you can't afford the kids you have then you should be put on birth control. Nothing permanent but as long as you are unable to support the kids you currently have on your own then I shouldn't have to pay for you to squirt a few more out. It also applies if the person has had their kids taken by the state, birth control until you are deemed to be a fit parent. And until it is determined who the father is through DNA testing the mother should not be able to receive any benefits for the child. And once the father is determined half of his assistance will go towards the child if he receives assitance. Of course this is all contingent on the fact you are a legal resident of the US. If you are not then you should receive nothing but a ride to your country of origin. Then we, the US, deduct the transportaion and housing costs from the foreign aid we send to their country of origin. No more anchor babies, child assume the parent(s) nationality if the parents are here illegally. Dolomite

Another strong motivaor for me to quit was the money. At a pack a day it is at least $100 a month. Goes a long way towards toys or savings. Dolomite
