  1. +1 My $475 Metro Arms shot better than my Colt even before modifying anything. I have since replaced all the MIM internals but there is no need for a range gun or even a defense gun as long as you have a lot of rounds through it. A friend came out with a brand new Kimber TLE, wihich is almost double the cost of my Metro. In the end he liked my Metro better than the Kimber he just bought. $325 goes a long way towards ammo and the more you shoot the better off you are. And if you buy an inexpensive gun you won't be afraid to shoot it, modify it or abuse it. Dolomite
  2. What are you going to be using it for? If it will be a carry gun size matters. If it is going to be a drawer or a range gun it doesn't. Rugers are built like tanks but are heavy. S&W and Colt have decent offerings as does Taurus. It will come down to what you like because if you don't like it you won't use it. Dolomite
  3. If I was considering a 9mm I would buy a 38 special capable of +P or even a 357 magnum. Nothing wrong with a 9mm but in a revolver 38 special or 357 magnum is easier and probably cheaper to find. It will be about the same costs to shoot and 38 special seems to be one of those calibers that is always available, more so than 9mm. Finding a decent 357 magnum revolver in the $450 range should be easy. Just so you know, if you get a revolver chambered in 357 magnum you can also shoot the cheaper 38 special or 38 special +P out of it. Personally I would forget about getting a 9mm revolver. 9mm is better suited in a auto pistol. Dolomite
  4. He is the largest source for rimfire ammo within 100 miles easily. Granted it is a little pricey but you can't find any larger of a selection than what he has. Some of his other stuff is high but some of his other stuff is pretty reasonable especially if you can't find it any where else in town. I have seen him lowball people before but not too bad. He offered a guy $200 for a gun that could not be shot and even if it could be repaired it was in 32 rimfire which would have been impossible to find ammo for. I have never had a problem with their attitude and have been in there dozens of times. Never seen an attitude other than when people came in there with an attitude. For those people they did deserve the response they got. By all means post the link for a $25 shoulder holster please. Dolomite
  5. I would buy the Lee hand held primer over any press mounted one. The reason is with a press mounted one you are tied to the press. With a handheld one you can prime anywhere. I have several press mounted primers but almost always use the hand held. I will sit and watch TV while I prime cases. Another advantage is they are cheaper as well. Dolomite

  8. Wonder how much they would hate those big poluting companies if they were holding a donation check for their school? Dolomite
  9. +1 This is what I used to make my wads. Dolomite
  10. DPMS is on the bottom of almost any list you might see. Most parts used do not meet milspec. Milspec is a minimum standard for quality, not an assurance of high quality. It just makes sure the parts made meet the minimum criteria set forth in the contract. It says its guns are milspec but it is only the stripped lower that meets the minimum milspec standard. There are only a few makers of the major components of an AR. Look at different AR's at the next show. You will notice several different makers have the same forging marks on their uppers. Lowers are also only made by a few companies but they engrave the lowers for a particualr manufacturer because most makers aren't setup as a forge. Same goes with the barrels and unless you are having a gun custom built you are going to get the same components as any other maker. The exception to this is DPMS because they make a lot of their products in house and that is why their products do not meet the milspec standard which, again, is a minimum standard. The only good thing that DPMS makes is their lower parts kits. I have used them for years and they have always worked great. Chamber specs should be the same between makers for a given catridge. There are standards and most makers are going to build to those standards. Saying one is tighter than the next is only speculation unless dozens have been tested from one maker to get an average. And even then it is the individual barrel that determines accuracy. Identical barrels will not shoot identically, doesn't happen. As far as twist goes I would get a 9 twist. Avoid the 7 twist coolaid drinkers suggestions. A 9 twist barrel will let you shoot everything from 69 grain bullets down to 35 grain bullets without issue. The only advantage to having a 7 twist barrel is being able to shoot 90 grain bullets but those will have to be single loaded as they can't be fired from a magazine. Something else, with a fast twist certain bullets will fly apart from centrifugal force. I have a 7 twist gun that when shooting 53 grain SMK's at anything above 3300 fps it turns them into a gray dust cloud. Same bullet in a 9 twist at even greater velocities is not a problem. Read this: BCM Complete AR15 Upper and Lower Receivers [2010-01-01] - 03DESIGNGROUP And notice the absence of anything DPMS. There is a reason. And then there is this: Notice that DPMS is at the end. Then notice how much they DO NOT do to the weapons. For most people they will not notice that DPMS is lacking in quality because it will be their only or their first gun. And in most cases those people aren't going to put 1,000 rounds throguh the gun in a life time. So for most DPMS owners they are "good enough" but far from being anything I would trust my life with. Now I am not a high end AR owner or even a fan boy of the high end guns. I don't believe you need to spend $2,000+ to get a quality gun. My main gun I built for less than most brand name guns and it has been flawless since day one. As long as you use quality components you can have a quality gun you can trust your life with. Now there is a certain amount of quality that the higher end guns have but that is not needed in order for you to have a gun to trust your life with. And in the end all guns may be used to save a life. Dolomite
  11. It has more to do with the store managers. I have spoken to several workers as well as managers as of late regarding their lack of certain kinds of ammo. I was told each store orders what they want as an individual store. So it may be the managers who have stopped ordering or stocking guns and ammunition. Dolomite
  12. I submitted mine on the November 4th, 2008 (yes the day Obama was elected) and received it on the 21st or 22nd of November. Dolomite
  13. It will later be edited to show the massive crowds that came out to support them. Dolomite
  14. I am glad to see there was some decent reporting on the actual facts and not something skewed. I knew from the onset that the guns in bars thing would be a non issue. It takes a lot of time, money and effort for most people to get their HCP. This generally means they are more mature and responsible than most. I think this is the reason that HCP holders are not going to be involved in anything they shouldn't be. It is the immature people who generally break the law by carrying a weapon when and where they aren't allowed to. Personally I wish it would be cheaper to get the permit. When I lived in Alabama it cost me $10 and a 24 hour wait for the background to come back. That was 15 years ago so I am sure things have changed by now but something that quick, inexpensive and easy should be the norm here as well. The biggest reason I believe it should be at least quick is if someone is in fear for their life from someone and know it. You can get a order of protection but you would still have to wait until you get a HCP to carry. Orders of protection are good but do nothing to deter someone who is intent on doing harm. Maybe if there was a law in place that if you had a order of protection in place you would legally be allowed to carry as though you had a valid HCP. As part of the normal victim advocacy programs ask if the victim plans on carrying to protect themselves and if so have a basic, basic handgun safety course that could be done on a as needed basis in a short time period. Reason I say this is my sister, who is was pretty much anti gun, contacted me about borrowing a gun. Her ex husband is acting really weird and she is really concerned he may try to hurt her. She is getting her HCP but in the mean time she has to travel without a way to protect herself. He is a work of art but I will leave that for another time. Dolomite
  15. First let me preface what I am about to say with I do believe OBL is dead. Whether last week or a few years ago I believe he is with his virgins. Now lets talk about what the reasons or advantages would be if Al Qaeda is saying OBL is dead if he in fact isn't. First, it removes the pressure off of OBL. After all if we think he is dead then why would we continue the hunt. Kind of like that relative that died, afterwards how many times did you try to call to talk to them. Second, it would make OBL a martyr (as opposed to just a lucky guy) which could be the rally call for all of his supporters as well as garner support from those who were on the fence previously. And finally, if they know he isn't dead yet made claim after claim he was it would make his "rising" even more dramatic. If Al Qaeda have been saying he wasn't dead then he came out in public it wouldn't be as monumental as OBL being dead then showing up in public. There are going to be a lot of questions as well as those saying he is still alive for decades to come. In reading all the reasons why, I understand the burial at sea but I still stand by the notion that he was dead long before a week ago. Dolomite
  16. Sorry, but it will all work out for the best. If you are ever in the Knoxville area PM me. We can get together for lunch or come by the house and sling some lead. Dolomite
  17. Whats up with the beavertail? It looks like it has a relief on the outside edge. Dolomite
  18. Not a carpenter bee. We have mason wasps killing the carpenter bees. Funny part was seeing all the carpenter bees relieved of their heads. The mason wasps use the holes for their own offspring. They place inch worms in the holes and mud them shut. Dolomite
  19. So I am not a born Tennessean. I spent some time as a young child and returned again in my late 20's. Prior to that I spent some time in some larger cities and seen a lot. Now to me an escort service generally meant a discreet meeting involving a woman o the night. Now to the funny observation. When I returned I was drivin when I noticed a red smaller pickup, like a Toyota or something similar, driving down the road with bright orange flags. It had a sign on the door so I became curious. I drove up next to the older lady driver and read the sign. "xxxxx's ESCORT SERVICE". At that point I thought to my self a few things. First, the people in Tennessee must be a pretty bold or are just plain used to seeing such things as openly advertising for an Escort Service. And second, the standards for escorts must be pretty low. I laughed about it and was a bit bewildered by for a few weeks until I noticed another escort service, this time in from of a mobile home. At tha point it "clicked" and I felt like an idiot. Even to this day when I see an escort service truck I smile at myself. Dolomite
  20. Familiar faces. I am horrendous with names but remember faces very well. Dolomite
  21. I have seen it personally and they carry these or at least MP7's and AR's. Pretty sure they were 416's but not absolutely positive. I am absolutely positive about the MP7's though. What they wear depends on the mission as well. The photo above is in line with what I have seen. I have also seen them in other garb. One thing I will say is in the photo above they seem a bit early in their deployment as most of the SEAL's I seen and dealt with had full beards. I'll assume they did it to help "blend". Dolomite
  22. Not enough pressure to really hurt anything if it did fail. If I remember correctly it should be 30 pounds or less and the tank isn't that big. If you are that worried about it take a wrench to a fitting and loosen it to allow the pressure to relieve itself slowly. Could be that if you have city water that it is still going through those lines. If that is the case the pressure is normal. Dolomite
  23. It is an electric water pump of some sort. The tank is a pressure tank so there is no drop in the pipes. Without the pressure tank when you turn the facet on you would have to wait for the water, When the pressure in the tank drops a bit the electric motor kicks on to pressurize the tank or to continue to pump water. I have the same setup, although more modern, on my well. Dolomite
  24. It's development had nothing to do with going green. It had to do with barrier penetration performance. It just so happens to be lead free. There was a long thread a while ago regarding this ammunition. Not going to get into my opinions on this but they have screwed the 223 performance up so badly that there is no way it will ever be as effective as it was 30 years ago. Dolomite
