Source for railroad ties near Knoxville?
Dolomite_supafly replied to Dolomite_supafly's topic in General Chat
$13.97 Each I am getting some for free I just don't want to wait for them. It might be a week or a month. Dolomite -
I am looking for a source of railroad ties in the Knoxville area. Rail Road Salvage sells them but are a bit pricey to me at $9 each. Looking for another source that might be a bit cheaper. Home Depot no longer sells them. If anyone knows another source I haven;t thought about please let me know. I am needing about 20 or so ties to build a backstop on my property. Thanks Dolomite

And if you don;t like it you can have it shortened. Kind of hard to lengthen a rifle barrel but shortening it is easy. Dolomite

A different take on stopping power
Dolomite_supafly replied to a topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
There is also a difference between physiological stopping someone and psychologically stopping someone. Both can stop someone just as equally well as the other. It is the unexpected that stops most people psychologically. I was told this story by a training officer, I'll use it as an example of a person being psychologically stopped. They were training on how to react to the unexpected but it was under another guise so it was unexpected. No one knew they were going to be shot at. They were using a 38 special revolver loaded with blanks as the weapon of choice for the training. It just so happened the first person who was part of the scenario was a person who would suffer from a psychologically incapacitation. The student came in expecting one thing and then had someone shoot at him. The student immediately fell to the ground, lying there unresponsive in a huddled mass. At that point the isntructor said his heart came up in his thoat because he had thought someone had accidentally loaded live rounds into the revolver, shooting and killing the student. He said it took a few minutes but the student finally woke up but was still in an obvious state of shock over being shot. Mental state, or if it is skewed through the use of drugs, has a lot to do with how a person is going to react to being shot if the shot isn't physiologically incapcitating. Shot placement is more important than caliber but caliber also helps in those less than perfect shots. But caliber isn't the end all be all in stopping a person. For me it is all a wash. I carry 9mm just as much as my 45 ACP and don't feel under gunned at all with either. I am more concerned with my training as well as being mentally prepared for any encounter. I am always running scenarios in my head, looking for exits or restrooms as well as just being aware any time I am away from home. Carrying yourself in a positive manner will prevent you from becoming a victim in most cases. Criminals are looking for those they can easily turn into victims. Dolomite -
Offensive Bumper Sticker Law
Dolomite_supafly replied to strickj's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
I would love to see fines issued for people wearing offensive t-shirts or exposing parts of themselves that shouldn't be getting exposed. Almost every trip into Walmart I see something I would not want a child to see. I have seen people with their pants and underwear down to a point where if they bent over it would expose their "brown eye". Or the t-shirts that say "F**K" this or "F**K" that. I can tell you if I were a manager for a day I would upset a lot of people. I know it is a bit over the top for most but my biggest pet peeve is those who are out in public wearing the dirtiest, smelliest and most dishevelled clothing ever. I am not talking about those who work for a living and get dirty doing so. I am talking about those who smell of week old body odor and urine. I find those smells more offensive than the writing on most shirts. Dolomite -
I have spent a lot of time overseas and I would say just the opposite. Most troops I saw or came in contact with were using issued magazines. Not saying there weren't P-Mags in theater but most of the troops are not using them. An 8 twist will shoot even the lightest bullets accurately. It depends on bullet construction more than anything. Centrifugal force will and does tear apart bullets with thinner jackets but if you have a bullet with a thicker jacket, even if it only weighs 40 grains, it will shoot fine out of a 8 twist. I have shot 40 grain bullets out of a 7 twist barrel without issue and have had issue with 53 grain SMK's. The SMK's would fly apart at about the 35 yard mark once velocity got over 3400 FPS in the 7 twist gun. You want the twist rate to be as such that the bullet you are using is barely stable in flight. That way it tumble upon impact. Too fast of a twist and the bullet will not tumble. And with the heavier bullets the velocity is going to be slower and in short order the bullet will not have neough velocity to disrupt. And when the bullet will not tumble or disrupt it just passes through the intended target like a .22 rimfire. A bullet that is sideways will always have more surface area than a bullet that isn't. DPMS is a good a trigger for stock builds. It is about all I use and never had a problem. I am able to easily tweak them to give me ZERO take up. Makes the trigger feel better than what it is and with a little more tweaking I can reduce the factory trigger to under 4 pounds and still fire anything I want including hard primers. If no hard primered surplus is in the future I can get the trigger to under 3 pounds. I have actually fired a lot of hard primers with the sub 3 pound trigger without issue but I still prefer a stiffer hammer spring. I have tried two stages and they are nice but there is a trade off. There generally is a lot of take up even compared to a factory AR trigger. They are light though. Using the same methods I also remove a lot of the pretravel on two stages. It all comes down to preference. Some prefer a two stage and some, like me, prefer a single stage. PM me your address. I'll help that trigger out for you. Won't cost you anything other than about 15 minutes. Dolomite

BP Revolver Chronography
Dolomite_supafly replied to ttocswob's topic in Curio, Relics and Black Powder
And from what I have been told and observed is the substitute tends to be more corrosive than black powder itself. Blackpowder itself tends to be easier to clean as well from what I have been told. I have a very limited experience with blackpowder but in most of my observations blackpowder is better than the substitute in most cases. Dolomite -
I have a Kimber conversion that is very accurate and reliable. I have it installed on my Metro Arms. If you already have a 1911 get a conversion. It is about the same price and you keep the same trigger pull and grips. Dolomite

Glad to hear you made it out relatively unscathed. Make sure you file your claim with the VA for anything and everything you were ever treated for while in the military, even if it is all better now. It is easier to have a 0% rating increased than trying to prove service connection later on. Also, if you have anything come up within either the first 6 months or the first year (can't remember exactly) after exit is is assumed it is service connected as well. And if anything service connected causes other injuries then those secondary injusries become service connected as well. Even if you only receive an offset becasue you are retiring there are several programs that help you once you become service connected. They do have some programs that pay you in addition to your retirement as well. Look up CRSC to see if you qualify. One thing you will be service connected for is tinnitus. I have yet to meet a service member that doesn't have the ringing in their ears. It is almost like standing under really strong fluorescent lights. It is worth 10% and verification is nothing more than answering the question "Do your ears ring?" with the word "yes". It was hard on me for the first 5 or 6 years of civillian life mostly because my exit wasn't expected. I still miss it today but am glad I am no longer in. I was discharged after 10 years because of some injuries that kept me from staying in. If you have any questions about the VA system please ask. I have been battling with them for 12 years now trying to get what I think I deserve. I have the current CFR that covers how the VA operates and makes its decisions. It makes it easier to beat them when you know the rules they use. 38 CFR Ch. I (7-1-08 Edition) Here is the msot current version I can find online. I have read through it a few times preparing some of my appeals. Dolomite

The locals were shooting steel at distances up to 350 yards. Had a few really good shots that could hit the 350 yard targets 7 out of 10 times using their AK's with open sights. I would let them shoot my AR with a red dot and those same guys would get 9 out of 10. In addition to the weapons and ammo it was also the fact they were just good shots. And we had some on the other end of the spectrum. They couldn't grasp the concept of sight picture and sight alignment. No matter how much we trained and how many shots we fired with them they could never hit a target with their AK. Even at 25 yards they were digging into the dirt or shooting wildly over the targets. Just like American's, some shoot well naturally and soem don't. I am in the don't category so I as much as I can to stay proficient. It is funny, actually it isn't, but intelligence and understanding by locals had more to do with food quality than anything. Here people are just lazy but most are still somewhat intelligent. There they have a lot of problems understanding even the most basic stuff. I spoke to a terp and he said it is because they were starved as kids and never developed mentally. Watching locals try to figure out why the magical stick that makes light (flashlight) stopped working would be comical if it wasn't so sad. Dolomite

Buy a Ruger 22/45 and don;t look back. It will outlast any of those already mentioned. I have one that has close to 20K rounds though it now and I have not had to replace a single item. Dolomite

It is only when you ingest lead that it becomes a problem. I have lead in my body that has been there for at least 20 years and probably closer to 25. Never had an issue. Dolomite

An officer was fired last year from KCSO for escorting the money for some of these games. He also provided security at the games as well. Claims he didn't know that gambling was illegal. Maybe this is why the illegal gambling suddenly became a priority. Dolomite

Some of my thoughts. I am far from the expert but I have had some experiance with AR's over the years. And one more thing, try to find people in your area that have AR's you can handle. I have spent a small fortune on items I thought would be right for me but weren't. If you can find a few people hat have a variety of AR's you can figure out what works for you and what doesn't. AR's are very customizable and personal so don't be afraid to step outside of the circle of those who dringk from the "tacticool" fountain. Dolomite

30 minutes seems about fight for me providing nothing crazy happens. There are times when a roll pin seems to refuse to want to go in under "normal" conditions. It generally takes a little longer to finesse it into place without damage. Dolomite

I have never used one but some say they help. Personally I can't see how it does with such a larger opening. If I wanted a compensator on my 1911 I would get the barrel mounted one where only the bullet passes through it. The tighter tolerance helps the compesator work better. The type you are talking about is large enough for the OD of the barrel to come through the opening. This extra clearance can't help tame the recoil or at least not much. To me the type you are talking about is nothing more than eye candy or range bling. Dolomite

And I would say 7-10 yards is even stretching it a bit in most shootings not involving LE. Most LE shootings I have read about or watched the video from have been under 10 yards. Most civillian shootings are going to be much more up close and personal. Dolomite

One more thing, opening up the ,378" bolt up to .424" isn;t a problem. I have had them opened up to .445" for the 7.62x39 without issue. The only issue I have seen is the extractor is too far in and will not snap over the rim. To remedy this a setscew was installed that allowed me to set the extractor depth. Dolomite

Up until recently all 9mm AR's and other pistol calibers were blowback. There has been a trend of making DI or piston uppers for pistol calibers. There are several custom builders that are making several pistol caliber AR's that are gas driven. From memory they make them in 7.62x25, 9mm, 10mm and 45 ACP. 357 wouldn't be any different to build. I do know they require a gas tube that is way shorter than even a pistol length gas tube. Of the non standard DI builds I have built I have done a 7.62x25 but never got it to run 100% so I had it chambered it in 7.62x39. After that it was 100% reliable with factory ammo as well as using my 180 grain loads. I do know from discussions that gas driven pistol caliber AR's have very little recoil, compared to blowback guns, because the it soaks up a lot of the recoil. It is also very tunable to increase reliability and decrease felt recoil. It also makes for a cleaner system than blowback whether using a DI or piston setup. Here are some discussions on gas driven pistol caliber AR's: http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=15&t=366336&page=6 http://www.ar15.com/archive/topic.ht...&f=15&t=509364 Here is one of the more prolific custombuilders: http://www.teppojutsu.com/ Ron Williams is another builder that does an equally good job building custom AR's. I do believe this is his 7.62x25 DI AR: http://www.cncgunsparts.com/ar-15_m-16_762x25_uppers I have had more positive dealings with Ron than with Teppujitsu. I asked Teppu if his system would work with subsonic 7.62x25 rounds and his response was "buy one and find out". A few other general questions resulted in similar responses. I have provided Ron, through a mutual friend, with some of my subsonic load data I worked up. He has also provided me with some data as well, again through a mutual friend. I also worked on what twist rates where needed to get a subsonic bullets to tumble in the 7.62x25. I did this for a friend of both Ron's and I's. I also have a 9mm blowback I built from a parts kit. Nothing out of the ordinary and anyone could have put it together. It uses a standard 5.56 carbine buffer and is 100% reliable with everything except a few HP styles. I do know that blowback guns kick a lot harder than a gas gun even when the DI is a much heavier caliber. The 9mm kicks substantially harder than my 223 gun which happens to be lighter than the 9mm as well. I have done several blowback 7.62x25 AR's for myself. I didn't like them because they were loud, dirty and actually painful if you did a lot of shooting. After a few hundred rounds I would have bruising because the gun only weighed around 5 pounds and had quite a recoil impulse. Ultimately I gave up on the 7.62x25 AR's and built bolt guns because I was more interested in shooting subsonic rounds but still wanted the ability to shoot surplus. Dolomite

Who elses property taxes/appraisal went up?
Dolomite_supafly replied to Dolomite_supafly's topic in General Chat
The building is on a seperate tract under a different name within the family. The total value of the property is appraised at $313,000. I just don't understand how my property is worth more than his when he paid what is at least 10X what mine would bring. Even if you compare cleared acre to cleared acre mine is 30x more per acre. It would be really easy. Grab a built 9mm upper and run a 357 Sig chamber remeamer in there. After that take the bolt and remove the extractor. Chuck it into a lathe and open up the bolt to accomodate the .424" rim diamter of the Sig round. I suspect you wouldn't even need to touch the extractor. The only thing you might need is a heavier buffer. I would almost be willing to bet the 9mm stick mags would work fine as well just with a smaller capacity. Dolomite
