Firearm discharge on public road
Dolomite_supafly replied to Knox Al's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
I take it you are joking. It isn't like in the movies, it takes a while for an animal to go down from a tranquilizer. A bullet on the other hand is pretty much instant providing it is a good hit. I have shot at dogs before on several occassions. When I got tired of having out animals maimed or killed I did shoot at dogs. Same goes for any other animal that is going to cause damage or possibly kill one of our animals. Dolomite -
Are you trimming the 9x19 or turning them into 9x18? I have never trimmed a pistol caliber. I loose them before they need any work b Dolomite

Which optics or scope is better for AR15?
Dolomite_supafly replied to a topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
I disagree. There are several brands that are reliable for under $200. Vortex, Mueller, Hawke, Bushnell and Burris all have rifle scopes under $200 including mounts. I have a Hawke Varminter II that has been used for all kinds of shooting. It keeps zero and is 100% repeatable in it's adjustments. Every Mueller I have owned has been great and those are as clear as every VX-II I have looked through. The Burris' are also a value. Midway has a 10x mil/mil on sale for $200 but was on sale before for $179. It is a great optic. I agree you get what you pay for but there are instances where you pay more for what you get. What would you do? Road Rage incident
Dolomite_supafly replied to kesava's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
I know you were upset but how scared do you think your wife and kids were as this was going on. Giving him the finger only continued the interaction. Also, your kids seeing you give the finger probably taught them it is ok because their hero (you) did it. The only thing I would have used my finger for was to dial 911 if the guy continued acting like an idiot after you honked. People drift into our lane all the time. And yes we do honk the horn from time to time. But if we get any negative reaction we leave it at that. Too many idiots in the world for me to try to fight. After all most idiots will drag you down to their level and beat you with experieance. Dolomite -

What price range are you looking at? That would help us narrow down the best bang for the buck. Dolomite -
The factory grips can be uncomfortable. I personally can't stand the MIAD grips as they tire my hands because they are so wife and flat. Try replacing the factory grip with a Hogue or some sort of Ergo grip. Makes for a much nicer feeling gun. Now I only use the Hogue ergo style grip. Or you could just pick up a few extra factory grips and sand them until they feel comfortable. Most people have them laying around and would probably give them to you to help you out. As far as the handguards there are a couple of cheap options. Get a cheap bolt on rail, they are generally less than $10, then add either a vertical grip or a off brand angled forgrip, either of those are about $25. If you don't mind going a bit more expensive get a free float tube as they tend to be thinner. You can get free float tubes for under $50. Or if you don;t mind just replacing the handguards there are plenty of good ones out there that are thinner than the factory CAR handguards. For the buttstock they do make risers that bolt on that give it a little height as well as width. Or you could find a few AR owners and try theirs to see if there is anything you like. Once you find one you like it is literally a 10 second job to replace them on a collapsible stock. I don't mind the factory collapsible stocks because they are about the lightest collapsible you are going to find. There are dozens of stocks for the AR, I am sure you can find one that feels good to you. Dolomite

Do Detectives secure their handguns in their office?
Dolomite_supafly replied to Tim Nunan's topic in General Chat
Every detective I have known keeps them on their person. At least they do when out of the office. I have known some that will take it off while sitting at their desk working on the computer or making calls. I think it all boils down to comfort level. What does disturb me more than leaving a gun is almost all the detectives I know or have known never regularly wore a vest. Even when they are in the field conducting an investigation they rarely have one on. The only time I have seen more than a few with vests on is if they are serving warrants. I consider it like carrying my EDC gun. If you have it use it. Some days I absolutely hate carrying my pistol but I strap it on anyways. I could also go down a few notches in size because I carry full size guns. Dolomite -

They automatically turn off after 4 or 8 hours. When I used them I never turned the off because they turned off on their own. Dolomite -

Dolomite_supafly replied to a topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
Not sure if they make them for your optics but I would look at getting one of the winged protectors for your MRDS. I can't tell you how many scratches are on mine that would have damaged my FastFire. They are cheap insurance and keep me from worrying about damaging it. Dolomite -
Everyone has to own a 10/22. They are by far the most popular 22 rifle in the country. It is their ability to be modified and changed to suit the tastes of the owner. I have had more than I can count over the years. Now I only have one but it is a culmination of all those years of finding out what I like. Dolomite

You mean feed ramp? If so I would tread carefully. It is very easy to take too much off and cause even more issues. Dolomite -
I for one would like to give him the chance to give the whole story. I understand he wants to make it seem like what he did was some big secret but it isn't. There isn't a job in the military that is classified, now what they did might be but no job. Also, class dates are not classified nor are any ASI's he may have. Jon you can smear egg on everyone's face if you have been speaking the truth. Trust me, I want what you said to be true. Dolomite

I have ousted a lot of phonies on the internet as well as in real life. I can honestly say I have a knack for calling BS as a lot of service members can. It does upset me knowing we have heroes that have died to protect these phonies. It also cheapens the awards those heroes receive when every Tom, Dick and Harry claim to have the same thing. It seems like you never hear of the cooks, truck drivers or supply clearks. I only hear of the SEAL's, snipers, rangers or airborne. All the cool guy jobs. I can pull service records to verify people's stories without much effort. I can use the FOIA and get everything minus their social security number. Their deployments, training records and in some cases their enlistment contract(s). It goes a lot deeper than just a DD214. A DD214 is just a snapshot of service and with the other records it paints a more complete picture. I have done this on plenty of people in the past. Jon I have nothing to gain and have nothing against you. If you want PM me your name (if it is a common name your DOB would help), branch of service, service dates and what city you enlisted in. I will pull your records and post my findings. I won't post the actual records. It generally takes a few weeks to a month to get them back. So what you say? Dolomite

This is one of the few times you are going to see me say a 7 twist barrel isn't bad, it isn't great and I would still use a 9 twist barrel. The 7 twist needs a longer barrel to get the velocity up. With the longer barrel you are going to be able to push the heavier bullets closer to the velocities needed for them to work. Most people choose a 16" barrel with a 7 twist which is the worst of all worlds. But you are going with a longer barrel which helps some. I would build it around what you are going to be shooting the most. Which is 55 or 62 grain for most who don't reload. For those that do reload you can optimize the loads for the gun but the twist is still too fast, IMHO, for an AR where you are limited to magazine length cartridges.. I would still go with a 9 twist. You can shoot 69 grain bullets easily with the 9 twist. 8 twist will get the bullet weight to 77 grains which is about the heaviest bullet you are going to find that can feed from a magazine. For most people 9 twist is plenty for what they are going to do. If you go with a fast twist some lightweight (read varmint) bullets will come apart from centrifugal force. I know for a fact 53 grain SMK's will come apart at under 3300 from in a 7 twist barrel and 40 grain V-Maxes at roughly 3500. There is nothing to gain accuracy wise by choosing a 7 or 8 twist over a 9 twist. Problem with heavy bullets is they tend to be pushed to slower velocities than the lighter bullets. Combine this with a faster twist and you have a combination that results in bullets not tumbling or fragmenting, only punching neat little holes in soft targets. You can fix this some with proper bullet selection but with FMJ's it is miserable. The Miller Formula, which is used to calculate stability lists 1.40 as the optimum number. All these calculations are done at 2800 fps which is very optimistic for the heavier bullets even with a 20" barrel. And as you increase velocity the stability increases which is not what you want in order for a bullet to tumble and ultimately fragment. With a 7 twist barrel a 69 grain bullet has a Miller formula number of 2.738 or almost twice what is optimal. For a 77 grain the same number is 2.292 which, again, is well above what is considered optimal. And the 80 grain bullet has a number of 1.943 which is closer but still far from optimal. Now lets do the same with a 9 twist barrel. The 80 grain bullet has a number of 1.175 which is slightly below the optimal number and listed as unstabile. The 77 grain is 1.387 which is stabile and and would work well as it is just under the optimal which means as soon as it hits a target it would tumble. And with the 69 the number is 1.695 which is also stabile and a bit over the optimal number. 62 grain bullets are still stabile at 1200 fps with a 9 twist. With a muzzle velocity of 3100 fps that 62 grain bullet is still stabile at 750 yards. And 55 grain is about the same as well with the 9 twist. You are not losing anything by using a 9 twist unless you plan on trying to shoot past 1,000 and in that case you are not going to be using a magazine and will be loading them one at a time. Beyond 1,000 yards is where the fast twist barrels shine but they also require a lot of velocity and a long barrel. What happens when a bullet is overstabilized is it will not tumble. And the tumbling is what leads to the bullet fragmenting. And it is this fragmenting that does the damage. When the bullet can't tumble it can't fragment and will only pass through. Now this can be mitigated using different bullet designs but for most tumbling is what you are wanting the 223 to do for best results. Velocity can also cause the bullets to fragment but the velocity has to be high enough to force the bullet to loose its structure integrity. This is the reason why we are hearing all the poor reports from soldiers overseas. The bullets are being overstabilized which kills the hopes of tumbling and the velocities have been reduced by the heavy bullets which kills the hopes of the bullet coming apart from velocity. Here are some interesting reads on the effectiveness of the 5.56: Do not hot link this but copy and paste it into a new browser to open it: http://stevespages.com/pdf/5_56mm_military_info.pdf This is the penetration based on velocity: http://stevespages.com/jpg/bestbullet.jpg Other than the barrel twist it looks like it is going to be a nice build. People are going to say why do you need to worry about tumbling and terminal performance. To those I say you never know what the future holds. The gun you build for the range today might be called upon to save your life tomorrow. Dolomite

WM buys from a distributor not directly from the factory. WM will also show you their distributor book or tell you their distributor's website for you to place an order. WM will order anything you want from their distributor. The distributors do not have WM specific serial numbers. That is just more of the BS dealers say to try to compete with WM. If you got suckered into paying more for a gun because you were told it wasn't a WM gun then you need to go have a heart to heart with the dealer because he preyed upon your unrational fears. These are the same dealers that were selling "pre June" ammo in 2009. They said that ammo made after June of 2009 had a 6 month shelf life. Which is more lies by crooked dealers. I watched one dealer selling, not asking, CCI Stingers for $27 a box. He was also selling Federal Ligthning for $6 a box. We can put some of the blame on dealers but most of the blame centers on the buyers being ignorant and not doing research. It seems that there are more crazy gun myths. And it all comes from a story about my uncle's, cousin's, step brother who knew someone it happened to. I generally consider any story involving more than 2 family members as BS.

Price aside, the size of the box as well as the weight should have been a clue. It is your responsibility to verify the "young punk" grabbed what you wanted. I always verify what goes into the bag because I know we all make mistakes. If I don't verify and allow myself to get screwed it is my fault. Dolomite

my 9mm AR (bad pics though...)
Dolomite_supafly replied to Magiccarpetrides's topic in Show and Tell
Not at all on a semi auto gun. I would only consider them necessary on a $15K registereed FA receiver. For a semi auto gun you will not likely have enough wear to eggshape or wear out your holes. My wife's 9mm AR has well over 7,000 rounds through it without the use of KNS pins and her's is running fine. I will put a drop of oil in the pin and call it good. Most people use them to keep the pins from walking out but if the lower is assembled correctly they never should walk out. Most problems with the pins walking out come from two causes. One is the hammer spring is underneath the trigger pin, the legs should be resting on top of the trigger pin. Second is the hammer spring is installed backwards. Installing the hammer spring backwards can also cause light primer strikes. Dolomite -

I use a food vacuum sealer to mold mine. I soak the leather in hot water, too hot for hands but not boiling, for a few minutes. This gets rid of the oils that make the leather supple. I then let the leather sit out of the water for a few minutes so a lot of the moisture will evaporate. Then I place the leather over the gun that has been vacuum sealed to keep out the moisture. I slide that into its own bag and vacuum it. I will not allow it to seal but contnue to vacuum it over and over again with fresh papertowels to remove most of the moisture. Then I take out the leather and let it dry over night. Makes for a very detailed and rigid holster. Dolomite
