  1. I try to support to local guys as well so long as they are a reasonably close to their competition such as Walmart. It is their choice to price their items how they want but then they complain when they can't sell the gun that they have priced way too high to be competitve or even realistic. The last time I checked Walmart got their guns from Lipseys. The mom and pop stores can also order from Lipseys for a price that is reasonably close to the Walmart purchase price. Then I understand the mom and pop has overhead and that is why I don't mind spending the extra $75. But for the mom and pop to expect a customer to spend an extra $200 is ludicrous. I would consider and extra $50-$75 to be a reasonable amount for a mom and pop to charge above the big box retailers. But I will not support a dealer that adds $100, $200 or more to the purchase price of something that is available everywhere. If I can purchase a gun for $450 out the door from Walmart why would I want to spend $600+ for the same item just to say I bought it at a smaller shop. Even if I could take the gun back to the local dealer most are just going to send it to the maker for repair which I can do on my own. I have seen dealers asking $699 for bare bones Glocks, no might sights or anything extra. That is why they are not selling them, not because of their competition. I was in the market for a Taurus for my wife. From a non local dealer I can buy the particular model she wanted for $362, that included shipping, background and transfer fees. The local small dealers that have had the same gun seem to think they should ask $500+ for the same exact gun. Then add the background and tax and you are in it for $200+ more. Hell if these same dealers would buy from the same place I can then add $50 I would buy from them but as I said most want to make $100 or even more on each gun sale. Some dealers do understand that pricing things reasonable to competition generates sales. I know this because there is a local dealer I have dealt with that charged $300 out the door for a NEW S&W Sigmas. He also charged $230 out the door for NEW Mossberg Maverick shotguns. Every other dealer I have asked wants $350, before taxes and background for the Sigma. I also see it at the shows. The last show I saw a dealer complaining when no one was buying the collapsible AK stock he had for sale for $199. The reason was other dealers had them nearly $100 cheaper as well as the fact the same stocks were online for under $75 shipped. If the local shops would charge a reasonable amount they would make a lot more sales and a lot more money. I try to support the local guys but I will not pay a premium to be able to say I did. 2. Kinzel way Walmart in Knoxville has a Sig 522 for $479. It has the folding, collapsible stock. Dolomite
  3. I was in a local Walmart and the associate was saying they will begin to carry pistols after the first of the year. I hope so. Dolomite
  4. And as far as the casing getting dinged up it is a 1911 thing especially if the port hasn't been worked. Dolomite
  5. Is this a new problem or is it a problem you just noticed? I assume you have already cleaned it. Other than being dirty I can't think of a reason why the slide would become harder to rack. Dolomite
  6. If they wanted to really stop these animals they need to make it mandatory that any hog seen is to be shot on sight. Any hunters, deer or others, would be required to shoot then on sight. They would also let anyone hunt them using any method they want and at any time they wish. Dolomite
  7. I am all for reasonable acts to bring knowledge to those who should but do not know the law or are unwilling to hear the law. Although a bit over the top his state park incident made officers that weren't aware of the laws intimately aware of them afterwards. And without it I am not sure the officers involved would have been receptive to a "layman" advising them on the law before the incident. On the other hand his actions, although legal, might result in the opposite in what he is trying to accomplish. Similar to the rash of open carrying people in California that ended with the practice being outlawed. I am afraid his antics might do the same for those in Kentucky and then spread to other states. His actions and antics are becoming a bit extreme. I for one am glad he is no longer a HCP holder. When all is said and done we do not need him to be identified as a HCP holder. He needs to be indentified as what he has become, a crazy lunatic. After all, who other than a crazed lunatic would intentionally expose themselves to a real threat of death. I hope his actions don't result in anyone getting hurt. Either him, an officer or an innocent bystander. Even if he is shot or killed the officer(s) involved will have to live the rest of their lives knowing they took a fellow human being's life. Not the easiest thing to live with for any man. Dolomite
  8. No, you are acting on behalf of the owner/agent. Now if you do something stupid (not saying you will) the owner/agent can be held responsible for your actions. Dolomite
  9. Reminds me f the Protec Security bafoons from over on ARFCOM. Remember that one Bimmerfreak?. Funny thing is they were also from Alabama. The Protec Security guys had a convicted rapist teaching women's self defense. Every member was a member of special forces. Dolomite
  10. Do you really use or need the features of your current buttstock? If not I would look at finding a youth stock then add spacers to bring it up to your length. For the extra rounds get a side saddle. They work just as well as the speedfeed. You can also pick and shoose which round you grab, not just the next one in line. I used a side saddle on mine and had slugs, buckshot as well as less lethal. If you do replace the stocks realize that a pistol grip on a shotgun with a top mounted safety is a HUGE pain to manipulate. I sold my 500 for this very reason. I either had to release my firing hand to manipulate it or hold it with my firing hand and use my forward hand to manipulate it. I trained and trained with it because it was gonig to be my HD gun but in the end I just left the safety off and the chamber empty. I have a 870 with a standard stock and like it. I recently picked up a Saiga and it was converted to a pistol grip with a collapsible stock. I like the ability to shorten the gun as needed. This is really important if someone else might have to use it. It also helps out with body armor. And if you are dead set on Mossberg look at the Mavericks. They have a trigger guard safety like and 870. They come in 8 shot models and can be had for under $250. Not sure if the 500 or 590 accessories will fit. Dolomite
  11. My wife and were in a shop recently when a customer brought in a small gun to get worked on. The shop worker was handed the gun and he racked the slide, dropped the mag and pulled the trigger (yes in that order). This was done while it was pointed at my wife. I was in the back when this happened and didn't find out until after we had left. She told me she got onto the shop worker. He had already swept her once with another gun a little earlier and she she got onto him for that. The second time she got mad and jumped onto him about it. His response "This is a gun shop get used to it". That is the kind of attitude that gets people hurt. We should never get used to unsafe practices. My wife is very aware of muzzle discipline and if anything is even remotely pointing her way she lets the person know. Doesn't happen very often so when it does it is a big deal. Dolomite
  12. I have tried every conceivable subsonic ammo out there. The most reliable, consistent and available I have found is the Winchester Subsonic HP's. The Winchester Subsonics tend to be the cheapest as well. I can find them for $3.50 a box of 50. They stay subsonic in everythig from a 4" barrel to a 22" barrel. They are also very accurate out of every gun I have shot them in. They also have a very large HP which mushrooms out to well over .35" out of a pistol. They are also very quiet. Remington subsonics have consistency issues that lead to accuracy issues. They also don't seal the chamber well and will give you a chamber "pop" when firing from time to time. They aren't as quiet as the Winchesters either. CCI's are good as well but they have a higher driving band on the bullet so they have reliability issues with match chambered semi autos. For sporter chambered semi autos or bolt guns the CCI's are fine. They are as accurate as the Winchesters in sporter chambered guns and are almost as quiet. They tend to be a bit more at around $8 per 100. If it is for use in a barrel 16" and under another good one is Winchester Dynapoints. They are as accurate as the Winchester Subsonic HP's. In barrels that are 18+ inches long they will go supersonic. They cost about $30 per 500 so they are cheaper than most but you do have to be aware of barrel length. If it is for pistol only with a 4" barrel or shorter I like Federal Automatch. They cycle really well and are almost as quiet as most of the truly subsonic rounds. They also have their velocity right at the speed of sound while most subsonics loadings are a hundred+ FPS less. Not all subsonics are created the same. Just because it is a subsonic round doesn't mean it is as quiet as any other subsonic round. In rifles the difference isn't as noticeable as in a pistol. And with that being said each suppressor is different in what it likes too. Some suppressors do well on a rifle and are miserable on a pistol while others are just the opposite. I researched long and hard to find a suppressor I liked but in the end I built my own. Dolomite
  13. So does your frined live on Koon Lane or not? If he doesn't and the officer put it down I would contact the mayor, the media as well as anyone else who will listen. We do not need LE like that no matter how small or large the department is. With that kind of thinking it would be hard for the officer to be impartial when dealing with your friend. Then your friend should contact an attorney to see what kind of compensation he should receive for his apparent emotional damage he suffered from it. I absolutely hate it when officers do this. It sheds bad light on all of them. Dolomite
  14. There is a lot of misinformation out there as well as rumors. This is causing all kinds of confusion for a lot people including LE. I overheard a customer asking a dealer about a self defense shotgun for his car. The dealer told the potential customer that the shotgun he was asking about could be in his vehicle. The dealer then told the customer he could even have it loaded. I told the dealer it could not have a round chambered and even then the customer had to have a HCP to have it in his vehicle. The dealer told the customer that a "new" law lets anyone carry anything they want in any condition they want as long as it is inside the vehicle, even without a HCP. I tried to explain to the dealer he was wrong but he said he was the dealer so he knew the laws and I didn't because I was just a customer. BTW, this is the same dealer that at a previous show was selling Charger barrels and stocks for use on 10/22 rifles. He was telling customers it was legal to put the Charger stocks and barrels on their 10/22's to make them into pistols. I explained the once a rifle, always a rifle rule and a 10/22 is a rifle. He said that didn't matter because of the Thompson Center Contenders can do it so all guns can. I told him putting a barrel less than 16" on a 10/22 required SBR registration. He said if you put the Charger stock on it at the same time then it was perfectly legal. I try to explain and help people out with the laws I know. In most cases people don't want to hear anything different than what they have already been told. Dolomite
  15. Just out of curiosity where did you hear that? The reason is I was on the phone with a supervisor purchasing a pistol. He inspected it for me while we were on the phone. They do have several locations where they have guns. They also have a store front that they sell out of. I have ordered from them several times and did have an issue the first order I placed. In the end they gave me a fair amount off of the gun itself as well as issued a refund to my credit card for the FFL's transfer fees. In the end I ws happy. I recently ordered a gun from Gilbert's. It cam in the next day and was a easy transaction. They will tell you to order online rather than over the phone though. Dolomite
  16. Also, any of the NFA organizations or dealers are not going to support a repeal of the Hughes ammendment. They have so much money tied up in collections because of the price increases that if they did repeal it the dealers would be out a lot of money. I would love to be able to buy a brand new MG or convert my own but those in the NFA trade would lobby hard against it. Dolomite
  17. +1 I called once a week the entire time I was pending. Almost always got the same person who looked up the status in their database. Mine came back in 96 days, hardly a delay. Dolomite
  18. If they are not crimped I will pay shipping for the small primer 45 brass. Dolomite
  19. There is firearms insurance available through the NRA. Dolomite
  20. Yes, it is organized shootign only. You can shoot your shotgun on the benchrest line but that is sitting only and slow fire. Might want to look at joining the Norris range. You can shoot how you want there. They have a 200 yard rifle range and a pistol range. Another good thing about Norris is you don't have the attitudes like at John Sevier. Both the customers and some of the RSO's there have bad attitudes. Dolomite
  21. I got my Form 1 in July. Took 96 days door to door. Dolomite Here is the current wait times: http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_6_17/295509_New_NFA_Timelines_thread__post_Nov__5__2009.html&page=73 It all depends on the examiner. I had Santa Maria which is one of the faster ones.
  22. I would like to see them start selling pistols again as well. Dolomite
  23. It is sad that a DA can come in after the police and charge people. Seems to me if the police say a person isn't worthy of being charged then that should be good enough. Problem is DA's want to look like they are tough on crime but few really are. They want to be able to say they had X amount of cases come in front of them and they had X% of those were convictions. Rarely do they say that the majority of the pleas are often to much lesser, and often very enticing, charges. To the DA a guilty plea for a much reduced sentence is better than the chance of his % being ruined by a not guilty ruling. The DA's say it is to save taxpayers money, and it does, but in most cases it is the DA who is looking for benefits of the plea. Even if a person were not guilty of a crime they were accused most would probably plea if they were offered a sentence that involved no jail time in order to avoid the chance of a jury convicting them and sending them to jail. Most DA's know this so they will charge anybody and everybody they can in hopes of putting another feather in their hat with another conviction. But when it becomes apparent the person will not plea the DA will drop the charges so it doesn't affect their percentages. This is what probably happened to TMF 18B's uncle. Something else I would be a supporter of is this. Whenever a crime is initiated those who initiated it should also be responsible for any and all violations of the law during that crime even if not done by them personally. In this case the robber would be responsible for all his crimes as well as be charged with the shooting of his vehicle by the clerk. After all, were it not for the robber's actions the clerk wouldn't have shot his firearm at the suspect's vehicle. I would also like to see the use of deadly force authorized in the defense of property if the amount stolen would constitute a felony conviction or would cause serious financial hardship to the victim. Like stealing someone's tools or equipment they use to support their family. Don't want to get shot? Then don't break the law. Millions of people stay out of trouble everyday so it isn't that hard. Dolomite
  24. And it is for a friend who has a 10/22 we can't get to shoot. I will be taking this one and setting the chamber back to match specs and installing it for him. Dolomite
