So I need something that has an OD of 1.125" (1 1/8") and that is round. It can't be metal but anything else is pretty much open, the lighter the better. I have found a solid plastic rod that will work but I would prefer a round ball. The rod will be easy enough to cut but a round ball would work better. It can be a plastic ball, rubber ball or just about any other lightweight material. If anyone has any leads I would really appreciate it. Thanks Dolomite

I personally like using 3N38 for the 147's. The reason is you can push them to 1,200+ fps if you want. I chronographed them out of a Glock 17 with .1 grain less than max and got 1,190 fps. It is listed in the VV load manual. And yes it is a stout load but still not listed as a +P load. I know shooting it felt like a 357 magnum and would sting a bit. Dolomite

Some people actually prefer lead to jacketed. I don't care either way but as a person who casts there is a lot of value in it. Because I cast my own bullets I can LOAD 45 acp for under a nickel a shot. Dolomite

I carry a beat up but extremely reliable full size 1911 95% of the time. The other times it is a full size Taurus 23/7 OSS DS in 9mm. My wife has my back with her engraved and nickel plated Ruger LC-9. Along with those we always have a Taurus PLY .22 loaded with 60 grain Aguila SSS. It has turned into a very reliable gun that is our last ditch weapon. And then on top of that I have a takedown AR in 9mm that is nearly always accessible. Mind you this is when I am not at home. As I said my PLY 22 has become very reliable. I bought it here for $100 because it wouldn't cycle. It took some work to figure it out but now it is something I trust as my last resort gun. I have only been without my main carry gun for 5 days in the last 4 years so I doubt I would ever need the PLY but I do trust it if I do. Dolomite

Shouldn't be an issue as the rounds headspace on the rim. Problem might be the jump the bullet has to make. Or maybe use the hyper velocity rounds with longer cases. Might need to pick up some spent 17 M2 brass at the range to take some emasurements. Just a thought for when you can't walk in and buy it anymore. Dolomite

I got to thinking that with the price of HM2 ammo being pricey as well as falling out of flavor that at some point there might be a better way to get it. At .20 a round it expensive for what it is and for me there might be a better option. I am thinking about the possibility of removing the bullet from a standard 22lr then necking down the case to 17 then seat the bullet of your liking. I would need to work out a way to measure a microscopic amount of powder. I would also probably avoid shooting it in a semi auto but in a bolt gun it should work. It would also allow me to use bullet weights that might not be available with a factory load. I have had other crazy ideas as well. Like the time I tried shooting a 69 smk using a blank. I have a scar or two from that experiement but at some point I am going to revisit it. I have also shot .22 pellets using blanks and they work suprisingly well. In a rifle are pretty quiet, about like a 22 short in noise levels. Another great reason for doing this is there are different strength blanks at Home Depot that they use for nail hammers. You can go from mild to wild for a funder $5 a box for blanks. Using the #4 blanks it will penetrate about 1/2 way through the short side of a 2x4. Dolomite

I would be willing to bet the velocity is hardly better than a 22 short with the shortest barrel. It does bring extra bullet weight but is it worth all the blast and recoil? They are hard to hang on to as well. I would rather have a 22lr version and load it with a Velocitor or the SSS. See the film I linked above. It is out of a NAA revolver and penetrating 9 inches. If anyone wants their 22 mag NAA chronographed let me know. I will meet you in the Knoxville area wherever you want. It will be an eye opening experience. Dolomite

This is the gun I was referring to in my earlier post. It has been supremely reliable with the 60 SSS rounds. The magazine feed lips had to be tweaked a little to make it reliable with everything else. But now I have well over 500 trouble free rounds of bulk ammo through it and over 300 SSS rounds through it without a single issue. The velocity runs in the 750-800 fps range using the SSS this gives the penetration that makes it a viable, low recoil alternative to a pointy stick. There is no other 22lr loading in this gun that will give even close to the energy levels of the SSS. And it is this energy that carries the bullet to the vitals. And on top of that is generally turns sideways making for a much bigger wound channel. Is a 22lr ideal, not even close. Is it ideal when loaded with the SSS? Not even close but it is better than any other alternative 22lr round in a short barrel. Without a doubt the SSS is the best option for short pistol barrels. Perhaps they have been under pricing them. You figure it costs the same as a standard AK to make then it is converted for import. The additional items needed to meet compliance adds cost to the firearm. I know I would never sell my S12 and now I definitely will not. It has to be the most reliable shotgun I have ever owned. It is melonite treated. That treatment is leaps and bounds above chrome lined. It is more durable and makes for a more accurate gun when compared to chrome lined bores. Melonite treatment cannot wear off and it doesn't build up. It is a surface and subsurface treatment that makes for a very durable surface finish. It also has an additional benefit of adding lubricity to the surface. And it is more corrosion resistant than most coatings out there. I would choose Melonite over any other treatment out there. If you are thinking about 22 magnum in a tiny gun I would rethink it. The reason is the 22 magnum needs barrel length to get velocity. By most accounts the 22 magnum rarely gets beyond 22 lr velocities when fired out of a 5 inch barrel and with that you get a lot of muzzle blast. I would buy a 22lr and then load it with the 60 grain SSS rounds. I recently chronographed some out of a 2.75" barrel. The velocity is within 10 fps of some ballistic gelatin tests I seen. The penetration was right at 10" ensuring it can reach vitals of most people. I do have a backup 22lr pistol. And all I carry in it is the SSS rounds. Even though the velocity is ~800 fps that is fast enough to penetrate. A big advantage of the SSS is because of the shorter case it tends to be more reliable than many standard 22 lr. You need to make sure to test fire it enough to make sure it will cycle if using a semi auto. If you don't want to use the SSS then I would use the Velocitor. It has a heavier bullet than most other 22's and also has a higher velocity than most as wel. And the worst thing you can do is use Stingers, Aguila supermaximum, Winchester Xpediter or any of the other hyper velocity rounds. They need barrel length to work. I have chronographed nearly every hypervelocity round out there and none have made it past 1,100 fps out of a 4.5" pistol. Most come in under 1,000 fps and when you consider they have really lightweight bullets you would be better off with a 22 short. Most 22 shorts achieve similar velocities out of shorter barrel without all the fuss. Dolomite

I suspect the barrel is pinned in place. After removing the barrel it is easy to thread then have spare barrels of different flavors. I have always been intrigued by the 17m2 and it would be easy to do. Even if I keep the "pin in place" setup it will be easy to swap barrels. In the end this is going to be a toy and nothing else.
