  1. Reloading 7.62x25 is cheaper than buying. If you bought everything except the brass it would cost about .13 each. Dolomite
  2. Joe Bob Outfitters has them for under $55 shipped. Dolomite
  3. Wow, you had more damage than I did without a doubt. I can't imagine what you have had to endure and it sounds like you are still postitive despite all that has happened. I think the biggest part of healing is keeping a postitive attitude as much as you can. I know the year after my accident I got pretty down. I had went from ~195 pounds down to 147 pounds. My injuries are mostly nerve damage and a little bit of damage to hard structures. I wish mine would have been more hard structures and less nerve damage. Hard structures heal with time but nerve damage tends to take a bit longer to heal if it ever does. Your injuries are, without a doubt, some of the worst I have ever seen. It has been 4 years since the helicopter accident and the doctors say I am about as good as I am going to get. I walk with crutches and will for the rest of my life. I use them mostly to keep me from falling but they also help me stay on my feet longer. Without them I get about 20 minutes on my feet before my legs go numb and I start to stumble. With the crutches it stretches that out to about 45 minutes. Sitting causes me the most problems, probably because I was seated during crash. For me going from a seated position to standing postition is very painful. Because of the nerve damage I also piss on myself daily and have other issues. I can't ride in a car for very long before it becomes unbearable. I, just like you I am sure, have good days and bad days. On good days I am almost normal but on bad days I literally curl up in a ball and never leave the bed. I get a good day a day or two a week then a few mediocre days then a few miserable days. I walk like an old man, taking guarded steps. My wife helps me get dressed regularly as well as helps me with getting in and out of the bath. She is always by my side and has to drive me most places I go. And without her I would have given up a long time ago. She has been my rock and never gave up on me and for that I will always be thankful to her. I wish you well in your healing and if you ever feel like talking send me a PM and I will give you my number. I know there were times when talking to people helped me out of a slump. Or if you ever make it to Knoxville we can grab lunch or hit a local range. Dolomite
  4. This all started with the barrel that a gunsmith had messed up when installing the front sight. The tried to do it without a jig and the sight was canted very badly. Something else is the chamber is a 223 chamber or 5.56 match as I like to call it. It is a 12 twist barrel which is also something I have been wanting for a while so I can shoot lightweight bullets. And with that twist FMJ 55 grain bullets will be accurate yet tumble upon impact with anything. Funny how nearly every AR build of mine started with a single, extra part. And in most cases most of those parts were cheap. When I get it built we need to get together it has been long over due as you are local to me. Or if you want we can grab lunch sometime. Dolomite
  5. Also, the person in Knoxville with the gas blocks please PM me your contact info. Thanks Dolomite
  6. I am starting a new thread after the last one got derailed a bit. Anyways I went through and weighed a few parts to give you an idea of weights and dimensions. The barrel is a 20" barrel that is .56" ahead of the gas block and .64" under the handguards. It maintains that profile to the front of the chamber. The barrel weighs (with the railed gas block, flash hider and gas tube) exactly 2 pounds. I am using a standard A2 flash hider but I might actually just make a thread protector to take weight off, haven't decided. I countersunk the flash hider so it will tighten directly against the barrel shoulder without a crush washer, saving a little there. The upper receiver (with charging handle and FA) only weighs 8 ounces. I am also debating on milling down the center of the top rail to save some weight there. I will not be using a ejection port cover, not really for weight savings but just that I don't need it. And while I had the lower apart I squared up the barrel mating surface to hpoefully help with accuracy. For the bolt and BCG I am going to use a standard bolt. I had thought of using a lightweight JP bolt or lightening a standard bolt but if I do I loose the use of the forward assist. The standard bolt weighs 10 ounces. I found an old bare bones collapsible stock. The one without any reinforcement ribs. It weighs just 3 ounces and will be good enough. The standard standard lower receiver weighs 1 pound 9 ounces complete with a commercail buffer tube but no stock. But to save even more weight I think I am going to order a polymer lower. The polymer lower is 7.2 ounces lighter than a standard lower so that is a significant weight savings. If I don't like it I can always use it for my dedicated rimfire. 10 rounds of 55 grain loaded into a stubby magazine weighs 5 ounces. I might be able to shave some weight with a Magpul magazine. If anyone has a 10 round aluminum mag and a short Magpul magazine could you weigh them to see which is lighter. I am still working on a free float tube. I can save 3 ounces but at the cost of about $130 more. I am still debating on that but I think I will be going all out for this build. That pretty much covers it other than optics. I would like to find a lightweight magnified scope that is 4x. If not then I will be Using a Burris Fast Fire which weighs 1 ounce. Or maybe a set of Magpul polymer sights. My goal is to have a gun capable of firing 10 aimed shots while still under 6 pounds. I also set a goal of doing it with off the shelf parts so anyone who wants to duplicate it can. I was going to do some "creative" weigh saving measures but I want anyone to be able to duplicate what I am doing. Right now I am at 5 pounds 4 ounces with everything but the handguard but with a standard lower. If I go with the polymer lower that drops the total weight to 4 pounds 13 ounces before the handguard. And the handguard I plan on using is only 9 ounces so I should have a complete gun capable of firing aim shots that weighs 5 pounds 6 ounces. I will post pictures in a few days as the build progresses. Dolomite
  7. If you haven't paid attention to the 7.62x25 go look up the specs. It is an amazing little round that I think would take off if a modern gun were chambered in it. I know if someone made a modern design in the caliber I would carry a gun in the caliber every day. There is something about a bullet doing 1,450 fps out of a 4.5" barrel and 1,850 out of a 16" barrel. It is also the first pistol caliber to reliably defeat soft body armor and the PAGST helmet. Dolomite
  8. Are you wanting to dull up some parts? If so you might be able to cerakote them. Not sure how a matte clear would look over chrome or maybe a matte silver. Dolomite
  9. I have a slingshot that I recently purchased. I haven't touched one in at least 35 years prior to that and had forgotten how fun they really are. I tried shooting arrows with mine and although it works I need to work out a method to get it higher in the slingshot. I would still be Minute Of Rabbit inside of 10 yards after a few practice shots. As far as shot I haven't really tried anything other than what I had on hand. The .69" round balls were just way to big for my slingshot. They worked but hitting was difficult but if I did hit something it was guaranteed to go down. I may cast some lead .33" round balls for a more appropiate sized "bullet". A friend bought some of the steel ball bearings they sell as well as the white glass marbles. He said they work ok but he did say practice is a must. We both have Walmart specials. I will say if you plan on using it much at all make sure you pick up an extra set of bands. Dolomite
  10. To bad the bad guy died quickly. I can think of a lot slower ways to die that would be more fitting for scum like this. Hopefully because the girl is so young she will be able to get past what has happened. Probably the best thing for her is for everyone else to never mention it again in her presence so maybe the memory will fade with time. And for that dad, good going. I know he is having to deal with taking a life but hopefully he realizes by doing so he saved his daughter from further abuse as well other children. His actions are how all child abuses should be dealt with. Dolomite
  11. We had a section then people started posting "Free Hugs" and other stuff like that. It went south from there. Not sure where you would post it now without benefactor status. BTW, what you got to give away? Dolomite
  12. Tell you what. I will go back and edit out everything I said. I just feel strongly about the situation. Dolomite
  13. They also make a 7.62x25 conversion for Glocks as well. Should sit better with Gaston. Dolomite
  14. I have been building so many platforms in 7.62x25. I have built AR's and bolt guns for a very long time. I need another and will have one very soon. I love the caliber! Dolomite
  15. So are you also disabled? Dolomite
  16. They are 7.2 ounces lighter than a standard lower. So I should be able to drop the total weight of the rifle to 4 pounds 13 ounces before the forearm. Then a rifle length forearm will add 9 ounces bringing the total to 5 pounds 6 ounces. For an optics it will be a Burris Fast Fire or maybe irons, depending on what will be lighter. Any way you shake it the gun will be under 6 pounds in firing condition. Dolomite
  17. I have checked locally and from my experience most players are not interested in small pieces or it is too expensive in my mind. Dolomite
  18. I guess you just cost me $52 for my lightweight AR build. I honestly think it is worth it to take a chance on it. Dolomite
  19. To add a little more. The old guy should be responsible for the difference between the cost and asking price or the cost to refinish, whichever is cheaper. The dealer should not just take a financial hit because of some nincompoop. And it is a hit if he sells it for less than what it normally does. I don't care how old or young you can't damage someone else's property and get away with it. Dolomite
  20. Walmart was only doing what its customers wanted. Customers wanted cheaper prices so Walmart did what it had to do to keep those customers. It is the same as EVERY other person or corporation that sells something, getting their customers what they want. If Colt were to receive enough requests for Chinese made guns and the US made gun sales were way down they would have Chinese made weapons for sale rather than go out of business. And I bet any company faced with the same choice, fill customer requests or go out of business, would do the same. If you want Walmart to sell US made products demand it and quit buying Chinese or any other foreign product. Walmart will take notice of the trend and start selling US made products. Unfortunately there are more Americans wanting cheap prices than those wanting American products. Dolomite

    1911's

I also have a Metro Arms American Classic. It has been 100% reliable since round one. I now have about 3K rounds through it. It has a slide to frame fit that was better than my Colt and the Metro shot better than the Colt. After buying it I did go through and replace all the MIM parts with forged parts because this was destined to be a carry gun. I also replaced the barrel bushing with a hand fitted Kart bushing. I can bust clays with it at 125 yards regularly. I will be keeping this gun forever. Dolomite
  22. And most would stand around in wonderment at the amazing contraption. I wonder how well an annealer would work to cook those little smokie sausages? Dolomite
  23. I did hear a nasty rumor. Rex, the "R", in R.K. Gunshows might be spending some time in the FPMITAP. Turns out he may have had a SUBSTANTIAL store of undeclared cash at his home. I like his shows and he seemed like a very nice guy when I spoke to him a few years ago about a problem I had. I hope it doesn't affect his shows. Also, anyone notice the absence of the "private sale" tables by the same people every show? Probably because the ATF has made quite a few arrests as of late of unlicensed dealers leading to those who were not arrested being a little gun shy, pun intended. I know normally you see the same people with dozens of guns for sale out of their "private collection" but not this time. Dolomite
