Man shoots self in face at Coal Creek Armory
Dolomite_supafly replied to Garufa's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
I will jump in and say this. What we know for a fact is there was a young man who thought his life was so worthless that he felt he was better off dead. That is never a good place to be. I do not know what was going on in his head or in his life to make him feel suicide is the best option but in comparison us arguing over it really is silly. We need to stop this. These silly word games we are playing among ourselves is not good for "our" family here. It is going to tear us apart as a board when we start making accusations and throwing veiled insults at each other. For those of you who feel like arguing (you know who you are) about someone else's attempted suicide take to PM or hell give each other a call and throw a few cusswords at each other. In the end the board will be a better place because of it and those wanting to argue will blow off some steam.. Seriously guys, we do not need to be arguing amongst ourselves. Dolomite -
Welcome to the board. Coming from Germany you are probably a bit overwhelmed with the gun laws here versus in Germany. And you never know when something bad is going to happen so it is never bad or paranoid to be prepared. We have at least one other German speaking member here. Maybe she will show her face in here. AR barrel recommendations
Dolomite_supafly replied to Caster's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
Almost any current produciton Blackout is going to be a 8 twist gun. He is looking for a 10 twist. Might be searching for 300 Whisper barrels instead of 300 Blackout barrels. Most of the Whisper barrels were 10 twist while most of the Blackout barrels are 8 twist. Dolomite -

Model 1 Sales is a decent group to order from. They use quality barrels and most of their other parts are brand name stuff. I have ordered a lot from them over the years. Dolomite -
I would get involved but I am not sure I would shoot to kill immediately. I would try to intervene but exhaust EVERYTHING before resorting to deadly force. I would not shoot first even if seconds do count. The reason is the second you kill someone, even if it is justified, you are going to be sued by the bad guy's family. And that is going to cost you $10K or more to prepare for your first court date. Even if it is thrown out at the first court date it would be stupid to go in without counsel and hope the legal system turned into a justice system, there is a difference. You know the bad guy's family will have a pro bono attorney on their side and if you don't have counsel you are taking an awful big risk. Another reason is to observe for a few seconds to determine what exactly what is going on. Perhaps the women is the agressor and the man is defending himself the only way he can. Dolomite

What have you done in the past week to prep?

I have been casting a lot of bullets lately. I have also cast food for my slingshot and been practicing. They are .33" cast lead balls that hit harder than marbles and even harder than steel ball bearings. Dolomite -
A good low cost 300 Blackout complete upper ?
Dolomite_supafly replied to Fourtyfive's topic in Long Guns
It is possible to build a COMPLETE Blackout upper for under $425. And these prices are through Midway, hardly the cheapest place to buy. You can search around and probably save another $50 on the total cost. upper receiver $77 http://www.midwayusa...-flat-top-matte bolt carrier group $110 http://www.midwayusa...remington-matte gas tube $12 http://www.midwayusa...le-ar-15-lr-308 gas block $26 http://www.midwayusa...ter-steel-matte free float tube $35 http://www.midwayusa...-aluminum-black charging handle $14 http://www.midwayusa...-aluminum-matte barrel $120 http://www.shop.ar15...ack-Out_c44.htm Flash hider $6 http://www.midwayusa...ead-ar-15-matte total $400 Or buy used items and save even more. I would be willing to bet that with some time and diligence you can build this upper for under $300. I have seen used uppers sell for $30, used charging handles for $5, used BCG for $75, Gas blocks for $10. And those prices are seen regularly. And there is nothing wrong with used. If you are worried about how it looks a $4 can of Krylon can fix it and you would be hard to tell a difference once it cured. Krylon is VERY durable after a few weeks. As a matter of fact when I build my Blackout upper it will be made up of 100%, except the barrel, used parts. Dolomite -
Early on Bushmaster had issues with properly staking the gas key but recent production guns generally do not. Not saying it doesn't happen but it is a rarer bird today than before the move. If the Bushmaster was made before the move I would look very closely at the gas key. I can't recall when they moved but I want to say it was in 2010. But evenif there is an issue you can easily replace the bolt carrier as Darth has said. And you can sell the old one to make up the lion's share of the cost for a new one. On a side note, Windam brand AR's are being made in what was Bushmaster's old plant. The reason why they chose the name Windam is because that is where the Bushmaster plant was previously located. A one year warranty does not mean they will leave you hanging one year and one day later. There are tons of companies out there that have little or no warranty that does the right thing. I am not a fan of Bushmaster but they are decent "budget" rifles. If I had the money to spend on a used Bushmaster I would just buy a new M&P Sport from Smith & Wesson. Dolomite Dolomite

They are a bright pale white. Kind of hard to explain but maybe a cream color. They are easily seen during the day. You could also mix in some titanium dioxide to brighten the mixture up some. I do not belive they will affect the "glow" properties too much. Another option might be to sprinkle the glow material with titanium dioxide while the glow is still wet. It will make it white and the glow should still shine through. Dolomite -
Bushmaster will have a properly staked gas key. As far as no paperwork I would not worry about it. Bushmaster is a well established company and will repair it without question providing user error didn't screw it up. Other than normal wear you are probably not going to see anything wrong with the gun. And even wear isn't a bad thing. Worn guns tend to be less sensitive to certain ammo. And even if there is a problem AR's are easily fixed. Bushmaster is a great gun. Not sure how much he is wanting but Walmart sells Bushmaster Patrol Carbines for $897. Dolomite

On one side I agree that the fact that by being accussed of a crime it can negatively affect you. But realize that in cases in which a person is arrested there is sufficient probable cause to make an arrest. Just because LE wants to question you doesn't mean you have to answer their request. If they have enough proof they will not ask you to come in, they will arrest you and bring you in for questioning. Which brings me to another point, NEVER answer questions regarding a crime you are considered a suspect in at least not without counsel and if you have been arrested you are entitled to counsel. If you have not been arrested it is because they do not have enough probable cause to arrest you. Another reason to publicize it is a lot of crimes are solved with the public's help. By plastering the crime all over the media it will get possible witnesses to come forward. And if a person is arrested for a crime and then found not guilty they cannot sue for compensation unless wrongdoing is established. Just because a jury finds you not guilty doesn't mean you are entitled to any compensation. Also just because a jury finds you not guilty of the crime for which you have been accused doesn't mean you didn't commit the crime. As far as juveniles there is a legal requirement to safeguard their identity. I know that even when they are in custody their identity must be safeguarded from everyone, including other inmates. I have dealt with quite a few people who will not sign a bill of sale whether buying or selling. There is not a legal requirement for it and as long as you have no reason to belive they are not allowed to possess a firearm you are going t be fine. If you purchased it from a dealer then there may be a 4473 on file "tying" you to the purchase. If, when you purchased it, you did not fill out a 4473 just sell the gun to whoever will pay your asking price and not worry about it. And realistically if you just write yourself a note of when, where and a description of who you sold it to that would likely be enough even if the buyer has no clue you did this. I know I generally never ask people to sign a bill of sale but I do set up a location where they will have to drive and I will write down their license plate number along with a description of the vehicle and the person I sold it to. I also make sure to ask if they are allowed to posses a firearm. That satisfies my conscience. Now you need to pay for benefactor status and sell it in our classifieds. Dolomite

Although it is rare stuff like this does happen and it is a sad situation. Personally I believe the officer should be charged criminally with the shooting as well as pay damages out of HIS pocket. It was his actions that led to the death of another. Had the officer had the right address and announced himself the person killed would have likely not been shot. What is likely going to happen is it is going to be ruled a good shoot by the officer. The jurisdiction is going to pay damages, without admitting guilt, and the citizens are the ones that are going to pay for it with their taxes. I would love to see the laws change where if an officer does wrong he is held responsible financially before any settlements made from public funds. If officers knew they could loose everything they worked so hard for they would probably use more caution and restraint. As it stands right now most officers are protected from loosing anything by their unions and the jurisdiction. Also, if someone kicks my door in and doesn't announce themselves they will get shot. To me anyone who kicks my door in and doesn't announce themselves they are the bad guy. And if someone knocks at odd hours I have a gun in hand 99% of the time. Dolomite

Can't have a separate area for novices. The reason? Because no one would admit they are novices. Nearly every trip I see safety issues. I have seen stuff that was so bad I left the range because I didn't want to have to call the ambulance. Dolomite

scope question. parallax and focus
Dolomite_supafly replied to vujade's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
The SWFA Super Sniper scopes have developed a cult following. They are durable and work well for the money. I have looked through a bunch of them and none of them have been as clear as a comparably priced Bushnell or Burris. With that being said they are some good entry level scopes and I wouldn't feel bay paying what they ask for them. Not sure where they are made now. They were originally made by Tasco in Japan. When Tasco dropped the line SWFA picked up the line as their own and began making them to Tasco's original specifications. Dolomite -
scope question. parallax and focus
Dolomite_supafly replied to vujade's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
So you refocus your scope every time you shoot at different ranges? Loosening the focus ring ring can affect your zero some. Next time you have the focus ring loose look throguht he scope and turn it . You will see the reticle bounce around. And depending on where you lock it in place it can be off. The focus ring is designed to be adjusted once then left alone. The "fast focus" eye pieces we see now are not needed because you are adjusting the reticle to your eyes and should never change, at least not every range session. Just trying to keep you from doing a bunch of extra work and keep you on target. Dolomite -
scope question. parallax and focus
Dolomite_supafly replied to vujade's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
Take your scope and point it at a white wall with nothing in the background of the scope. Turn your parallax adjustment to the closest distance availabe. Then adjust your scope's focus (not parallax) ring until the crosshairs are clear to your eyes. This is to ensure the crosshairs remain clear no matter the parralax. It is possible that your reticle is out of focus but your eyes correct for it and this small correction can throw the parallax off. Once you have focused the reticle then the parallax should be used to clear up the distances, not the reticle. Now it is possible that the parallax knob is off. Some are actually adjustable so you can put the hash harks of the knob to the correct distance. Find a known distance and adjust the parallax until it is as clear as it is going to get. It should line up, if not then you need to adjust it. If you can't adjust it you may want to take a paper label and make new hash marks. And actually this is better for more precise work. Take the scope, with the label, and focus it at 100 yards, then 150, then 200, then 250, then 300 and mark each. Now you can use your parallax adjustment to determine range within 50 yards. Just turn the parallax knob until everything comes into focus and what is on the knob is the distance. Dolomite -
They even made sure to throw in a few "war" stories. Wheelchair guy said he had someone steal his air and he burned in from 75 feet. Screwed him up pretty bad. The counter guy, from the 75th no less, lifted his leg up and tapped on it with his knuckle. Not sure if it was an artificial leg or just a brace but it sounded plastic. He said they were coming in low and slow when he had a malfunction as he exited. He said it was LOW, as in 275 feet, when they exited and his canopy never opened. His quote "They dug me out of the Georgia clay". Now I know miracles do happen. But falling from 275 feet and still able to walk and not be a doped up zombie from all the meds is pretty amazing. I got to know a guy who burned in from 100 feet. He spent 359 days in the hospital. I met him years after it happened and he was still pretty F'd up. I know he broke all but I think it was 3 ribs, shattered both femurs, his head hit so hard it ruptured both eardrums and he had his knees wired together. He had a bunch of other injuries to, It messed with his cognative abilities and he spoke with a very strong because of it. And he said what saved his life is he landed on his pack and it forced him to do a PLF. He said he was stiff as a board as he burned in but hitting his bag saved his life. He was a hardcore MF'r, SF, AB, AA. I met him in PLDC, he was a cadre, and we became friends a few years later when we found ourselves at the same duty station. He said he hated working at PLDC. He had A LOT of awards and accountrments but he said the command would not let him wear everything on his A's because the other cadre would get upset because of all the extra attention he got. He said they told him to tone it down "for the students". I saw his DA photo and I would have a hard time standing up without leaning to one side. Again, one bad ass MF'r. I will probably watch this show but realize it is for entertainment only. I know it got me worked up a few times which I guess is good. Dolomite

You could also have and extension added to the factory barrel. Might be less than buying a new barrel. When I had it done it generally cost around $100-$125. What the smith does is thread the factory barrel. Screw an extension onto the barrel with sleeve retainer to hold it in place. Then turn it down to the factory barrel's OD. Then thread the extension for whatever thread pitch you want. Another reason to do this is you know, without a doubt, the threads are concentric to the bore. Another advantage is the original barrel length is kept the same. Longer barrels, even by a 1/2" can increase velocity to supersonic in some rounds. Dolomite

I knew within 30 seconds it was a bunch of retarded wannabes. The producers no doubt had them do do it for effect but they were doing a full on tactical movement from the parking lot to the front door. And every person had either an AR or an AK that was covered with rails and every inch of rail covered with something. Be it lasers, lights, red dots, you name they had it. And this was when they open up the shop. Then every single customer than came in was in full "tactical operator" regalia with their rifle hanging from a single point. They all stood in the "proper" low ready stance with one hand on the grip and the other on the foreward grip. At least they don't have the American Guns pricing scale. But, without a doubt, it was all scripted. A young lady comes in and cusses the manager out. Then the manager goes and cusses the secreatary out. Then the owner goes and cusses the manager out. There was a lot lf bleeping going on and it has the same feel as Operation Repo except in a pawn shop. I cannot say whether I will watch it again but at a bare minimum the show is putting guns on national television. And any exposure, as long as it isn't extreme, is a good thing. Dolomite
