There are some detractors for the caliber but they don't really affect me. First is the weight of the loaded ammo is A LOT heavier than the 223. Especially the subsonic loads. I loaded about 100 subonics the other day and it surprized me when I picked te bag up. Round for round a subsonic BLK is probably heavier than a 7.62x51 round. That is of no concern to me because I am not going to be running around with a full combat load. Second, I can't Walk into my local Walmart and buy ammo. I have asked a few times and the next time I go in there I am going to ask them to order some even though I reload. So far every story locally, except a small privately owned one, has looked at me as if I were an idiot when I ask if they carry "300 AAC Blackout". The local has the 115 grain ammo for $12.60 out the door and said he could order me subsonics if I wanted them. All in all I really do like the caliber. More than 223? Probably about the same right now. I will never get rid of my 223 caliber guns but the BLK will compliment the 223. Nothing like reloading a 223 until it basically starts to fall apart then cutting the neck off and shooting it some more until the case falls apart. Then after than I will be using the cases to make 7.62x25 Tokarev brass. Hard to beat something that you can use so many times. Dolomite

Download this form and fill it out: http://www.atf.gov/f...tf-f-5320-1.pdf After filling it out have your local sheriff or Chief Law Enforcement Officer sign it on the back. After signing make a few copies, one for the ATF and one for you. Have passport photos taken and attach one to the original form as well as a copy of the Form 1. I stapled mine in place and also wrote my Name, DOB and SSN on the reverse of the photo. Either find a local Class III dealer for the correct figerprint cards or contact the ATF to get the correct fingerprint cards. Take those fingerprint cards to the same office that is signing the Form 1 and ask to have them fingerprint you. You need two sets done. They need to have a specific ORI number for the ATF and you must use the ATF's fingerprint cards. You must also fill out one of these as well. It is a recent change to the process: http://www.atf.gov/forms/download/atf-f-5330-20.pdf Then you put your two Form 1's, copy and original; two sets of completed fingerprint cards, Certificate of Compliance and a $200 check in and envelope. Mail the packet to the ATF then wait approximately 6 months for your paperwork to come back. You can call about a month after your check is cashed and check on the status. It will be pending or they will have no clue on the status. Calling doesn't affect the time it takes because you are talking to secretaries, not the examiners themselves. This can also clue you in to any problems. After, and only after, you paperwork comes back stamped you can remove the pistol stock and attach a rifle stock. Do not have a spare rifle stock unless you have a receiver or completed gun that is a rifle. For the reason I put "For any lawful purpose". The rest is easy. For the barrel length use the abrrel length you have now. DO NOT put multi otherwise it may get kicked back. Dolomite

Loading the 38 S&W (Not Special)
Dolomite_supafly replied to Dolomite_supafly's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Unsized 158's seem like they are doing pretty well. I tried some 90 grain Gold Dots I had laying around and they were WAY too small. It is shooting a bit off compared to the factor ammo because they are probably a bit small. I have a decent load that mimic's the factoy loads well now. The little gun will just about jump out of your hand with factory rounds. Mine are a little tamer. I am going to cast some really soft 158's for it. I will probably take some confettie circles and pace them between the two mold blocks to give me a few more .001" of OD on the bullets. -
So today I bought a 38 S&W revolver. The 38 S&W was the precursor to the 38 S&W Specail and Magnum. And because the S&W is an earlier version the case is also much shorter than a Special or Magnum. So I sat here trying to find S&W dies then thought to myself it looks suspiciously like a 9mm with a rim. Well they are so close I am using 9mm sizing and loading dies with a 38 Special shell holder and it seems to work great. Other than a few minor changes in the depth of the dies they are working great. So if anyone else out there own a 38 S&W revolver an thought ammo was to expensive then reload. The cost to do it would be about the same as 3 or 4 boxes of ammo. Ammo is going to cost me less than a 22 lr now because I cast. The most expensive part of the load is the primer at .03 and probably .01 in powder. Dolomite

And since when is it legal to remove sand from beaches? Last time I checked it was illegal as most beaches bring sand in to refurbish beaches. Dolomite -
165 gr Federal Hydra-shock still effective?
Dolomite_supafly replied to Newman's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
It is going to be a very effective round. I would normally switch off between those lightweight bullets in the summer and heavuer bullets in the winter. Overpenetration is also reduced with lighter bullets. Do no carry FMJ's as they will pass through pretty much anybody you might have to shoot. And you are responsible for that bullet even after it has passed through a bad guy. Dolomite -

Officers do not do whatever they can to trick someone into breaking the law. As far as the radar traps statement, don't speed and it should not matter if the officer is hidden or not. Don't run red lights and you won't get your picture taken for a ticket. Don't break the law and you will probably never have to explain anything to an officer because you will never be questioned. When someone is being questioned by an officer it is because there is a reason. People break the law then blame anyone other than themselves for the consequences. That is one thing that has really bothered me recently, people do not want to take responsibility for their own actions. It is everybody else's fault except their own. Dolomite

AKM Extractor trouble
Dolomite_supafly replied to glockster157's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
The problem with putting a spring under another spring is over time one can screw into the other with use. You need to have something seperating the two to prevent it. Dolomite -
The ability to swap calibers just makes it appealing to more customers. There are armies out there that currently use 308 or 300wm or 338lm but rarely all three wide scale. Because of this they can market this single rifle to to those countries. And those countries do not need to change their supply system or have to get rid of their stockpiles of a particular caliber. I would venture a guess and say most that are sold will be in a single caliber based on the customer's needs. Cost of training with small arms, especially the difference between 308 and 338, is literally nothing compared to most other types of training. Dolomite

AKM Extractor trouble
Dolomite_supafly replied to glockster157's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
Try pulling a little more tension on the extractor. It should actually be pretty difficult to snap over the rim. An easy way to add extra tension is to drop a ball bearing down I to the hole for the extractor spring. Just make sure it is small enough to get back out. Dolomite -

The subsonic load using a 220 SMK at 1,050 fps with a 50 yard zero: 100=-7.6" 150=-23.7" 200=-48.4' 250=-82.1" The data for a 40 grain 22 at 1,200 fps with a 50 yard zero: 100=-7.2 150=-23.5 200=-50.7 250=-90.0 Pretty close or at least close enough to the subsonic data that I can tweak the velocity of my handloads to work. Heck, being off by 2" at 200 yards is probably within my own error while shooting. They have a turret specifically for a 22lr in this velocity range so I am hoping I can tweak the handload to match the turrets. Supersonic load using a 125 SMK at 2,200 fps with a 50 yard zero: 100=-1.5" 150=-5.2" 200=-11.5" 250=-20.7" 300=-33.1" I am going to see if they have a MOA or MIL chart for the reticle at different magnifications. That will be more useful to me than their program to figure out holdover. The only thing I wish they would do is embrace the MILDOT. It is the easiest reticle to use across the board. Had this scope had a mildot reticle I whould have paid twice what they were selling them for and not given it a second thought. Dolomite

Across the board the 300 blackout is closer to a 22lr than a 223. Ballistically a subsonic 300 blackout is going to be pretty close to a 22 than a 223. Even supersonics are going to be closer to a 22 than a 223. The highest velocity bullet I might shoot out of the blackout is ~2,300 fps and it drops like a rock compared to a 223. And the 300 isn't going to have the range of a 223 either so I don't need a really busy reticle. I do plan on figuring out if there is a way to use the reticle to determine distance to certain targets. And because I handload I can tweak he velocities and bullet weights to get something that "fits" pretty close. Dolomite

I spent the last few days searching and about to go made when I found this little gem. http://www.nikonhunting.com/products/riflescopes/p-22/2-7x32_BDC_150_BDC_150/8499 The Nikon P-22 in 2-7. Because I plan on shooting mostly subs the reticle and the turrets are going to match up pretty close out to 175 yards. It has 80 MOA of internal elevation and when I cut that in half I should be able to dial it to right at 300 with subs, well over 650 with 110 grain VMax's and over 500 with 150 grain bullet. That is with a 50 yard zero. It has 1/2" adjustments at 100 yards which makes dialing in ditance a lot quicker as well. Best part is they have a $30 rebate going on right now making the deal even sweeter. So I will have this at my door for a lot less than I expected it. It was a toss up between it and this one: http://www.nikonhunting.com/products/riflescopes/p-223/3x32_BDC_Carbine/8496 The reason why I almost chose this one is it has 150 MOA of internal adjustment. Meaning I could get to probably 500 yards on the deals but with a 3x that is out of the range. I really wish they would offer either one with a Mildot reticle. It would make ait a much more useful scope. But as it stands it should work well and if not then I will toss it on a 22 and call it good. Glad this part is over. Now I just need to shoot it but I need a barrel to do that. Dolomite

I think he meant that Romney is also a #### sandwich. So now we have the choice of two #### sandwhichs but like you said one has mustard and one doesn't. And that mustand is either going to make it bitter and hard to swallow or cover up the taste of #### depending on your perspective. But any way you look at it the country is probably not going to come out of where it is right now regardless of which #### sandwhich we choose to eat. May as well be a #### sandwhich with a side of "R" than a side of "D" either way it is still a #### sandwhich we are going to have to eat regardless of the side. Dolomite

Depends on the die but it generally sizes it down quite a bit farther than the expander ball. I have never measured it but you can see where the bullet stops in the neck. I tried some 223 that way and it worked but not sure if it helped accuracy or not. Dolomite

Here are the criteria for catsup/ketchup as established by the Federal Government. And you know if there is a standard there is some one making sure it meets that standard. http://www.accessdat...rchTerm=ketchup In blue is the testing procedures.
