  1. The BCG from a 5.56 AR will NOT work with a Colt pattern 9mm setup. Colt, and most other brands, 9mm ARs are typically blowback operated. Because they are blowback they do not require ports in the barrel, a gas tube or even a gas key on the carrier itself. The carrier is also weighted more heavily so it will work with the blowback setup.   Any blowback gun is going to be more reliable than a typical locked breech gun. It is also safer because if you have an over pressure round that just means the bolt will open a little sooner. And 9mm blowback makes an excellent training gun because the 9mm is cheaper to shoot and has more felt recoil than a 5.56. So you can train for recoil using cheap 9mm. And with the longer barrel the 9mm starts performing more like a 357 magnum and less like a 9mm pistol.   Another great thing about the extra recoil of a blowback gun is they are super easy for those of us who cannot afford a MG. I recently bought one of the $100 bumpfire stocks and it works great.   I built my wife a 9mm AR in 2003-2004 (can't remember exactly when) and it has been dead nuts reliable. As long as we are shooting ball ammunition her gun is 100% reliable but it is a semi auto as well. Hollow points are a bit more finicky so just plan on not using them. I use the Flex Tip ammunition for my defensive ammunition and it feeds perfectly. I recently built another 9mm AR that has a 3.5" barrel. I built it specifically for use with my 9mm silencer and it seems like a perfectly match setup. I threaded a pistol buffer tube for a YHM butt pad so the setup is short. I made the barrel from a Green Mountain blank. I have probably used 15 GM barrels for different projects now and they have always worked great. I will try to get a picture uploaded.   To convert a 5.56 AR to shoot 9mm you will need these items beyond what comes with a standard 5.56 AR. 1. 9mm barrel 2. 9mm blowback carrier that has been ramped 3. Magazine block for the lower 4. Magazine (Either Colt pattern or UZI magazines with the catch slot cut in) 5. Heavy buffer 6. Flash hider 1/2-36 7. 9mm hammer (some 9mm bolts do not work well with 5.56 hammers so you might have to buy one)   There are a couple of decent options on magazine blocks. Hahn is the Cadillac of conversion blocks but they are very EXPENSIVE. ProMag makes one as well but unlike their magazines the block itself works great. The ProMag magazine block drops in from the top of the lower and is held in place with the bolt hold open and magazine catch in the lower. So switching back and forth requires a bit more time, like 15 minutes, than just. Hahn makes a "temporary" magazine block that slides in from the bottom and is held in place with set screws. It works great but it will loosen over time leaving the magazine sitting a little too low to feed. So ALWAYS use the one the drops in from the top to prevent that.   If you need ANY help with getting your 9mm running, or with what you need to buy, please let me know.
  2. I am slowly getting better, 40 days left before I can start to get back to normal. Well as my surgical sight pain has started to subside I am starting to realize I am sore in other places. Probably just got manhandled but my right shoulder is hurting pretty bad but no where near as bad as the 2-3 ribs that are sore. The boney "wing" on my hip and my right knee are noticeable as well. The ribs are noticeably swollen. Matter of fact the ribs and shoulder are more bothersome than the surgery now. I slept on a chaise lounge last night and it helped me a lot. Before last night I have had less then four hours of sleep since Sunday. Last night I got four then another four this morning. I really appreciate those of you who have reached out with advice and encouraging words. It is helping me a lot.
  3. I would STRONGLY suggest getting a ramped bolt when you do go to 9mm. Bolts that are not ramped cause the hammer pins to break and will egg shape the hammer and trigger pin holes. If you have a RDIAS then it isn't that big of a deal but if it is your lower that is the MG then it could destroy your lower.
  4. If you want I will build you a barrel. I can build it to YOUR specifications and configure it in any way you want. I can also thread it 1/2-28, versus, 1/2-36, to make silencer use a little easier.   All I need is for you to order one of these and mail it to me. http://www.gmriflebarrel.com/9mm-blank-s-17-5-x-1-25-9mm-gunsmith-edition-raw-blank-1-10/ (I will send back any unused portion of the barrel for future use)   And for payment just add one of these to the order. http://www.gmriflebarrel.com/7-62x51-blank-7-62x51-raw-blank-25-x-1-25/   I can also add cooling fins to the 9mm barrel if you like because it will be used with a MG. Like I said I will build it to your wants and can anywhere from mild to wild.   Only hang up is I am on the injured list until the end of June so I cannot do it until then.
  5. David is the best guy in the world. Honest to a fault and ALWAYS willing to help both by his actions and by offering up his vast amount of knowledge freely. The stuff I have personally witnessed him do for others is more than anyone else I have ever known. We met in my time of need when he bought a gun I was selling. I consider him a good friend and just like he would do anything to help me I would gladly do the same for him.
  6. Another option could be to open up the .473" bolt face to .514" and chamber it in 50 AE and shoot subsonic 660 grain 50 BMG bullets. It will have an OAL less than 308 Winchester.
  7. So I was up doing laps around the bed and decided to snap a picture. I didn't even know I was pregnant but with the screwing I took six months ago I figure it looks about right. Just hope I am not going to be giving birth in another three months. I have two small incisions on either side of my belly button and they feel no more sore than when I got shot. The one that hurts like a mother is the incision where they went through my belly button, it is still stinging. The area where the mesh is hurts no worse than before, at least right now. I suspect that will change tomorrow. Thanks for all the kind words, thoughts and prayers.
  8. I normally am not worried about procedures but this time I was pretty worried about going under. I had severe chest pain about a month ago. The ER thought it was a cardiac issue so they pumped me full of blood thinners. They rescheduled the original surgery because of it. They did all kinds of tests to ensure it wasn't my heart but that was lingering in the back of my mind as I was being put under. Chest still hurts from time to time but it is slowly going away. There is something good to come out of this. I have a new pain, although temporary, so that is a welcome break from my "normal" pain from the helicopter crash. I tell you what, between this and the cardiac testing I should be good to go to start getting back in shape. Just going to have to wait a few months.
  9. Ok, I couldn't run out of the hospital fast enough. I was out of the hospital in under an hour from the time I woke up. I am on my way home now. No lifting for six weeks so if anyone needs anything from me it will be at least that long. But if you want to call feel free to do so, I have about six weeks worth of boredom to deal with. Right now it feels like I have been in a rough bar fight with about a 1/2 dozen dudes. Definately did not win either.
  10. Do I REALLY need to show what my poor thumb has been through? Nevermind, I will go ahead an show off my war wounds. And I am doing it while waiting on my surgery to start. Ok, I told myself I would not do this but there are plenty here who haven't seen it. BTW, these are separate incidents. I have also smashed my thumb to oblivion but no pictures of it but I did figure out how to sleep with my hand up in the air like a 3rd grader trying to get the teacher's attention. My thumb met a very sharp knife and required a trip to the ER. This one my thumb got sucked into a router bit and I decided I didn't need to go to the hospital even though I probably should have. My poor thumb doesn't even look right and the skin grows all kinds of funky.
  11. You should ALWAYS clean your brass before AND after sizing. I put my brass in a bowl then I spray my alcohol and lanolin mixture over the brass. I stir the brass up then respray. I do the a couple of times until the brass is covered. I let the brass set until the alcohol evaporates. Next I size the brass. Then I put the brass back into the tumbler for another hour or so. I use 93% alcohol rather than the Heat but I use pure lanolin. I bring a large pot of water up to a temperature you cannot stick your hand in. Not quite boiling but HOT. I loosen the lid of lanolin and put the container into the hot water. This will make it pour easier and mix better with the alcohol. After the lanolin is hot leave it in the water but loosen the cap of the container of alcohol and put be alcohol in next to heat up. After both are hot pour the lanolin in with the alcohol. Shake it vigorously for 2-3 minutes then allow it to cool. This should keep the two from separating, at least not as bad, but if you start to see it separate just give it a shake.
  12. I have always wanted to take either the Troy pump AR or the Remington pump 223 that takes AR magazines and convert them to 300 Blackout or even 9mm. I think they would be cool, as quiet as a bolt gun and as quick as a semi.
  13. In about six hours I will be getting admitted for surgery. December 7th, in the midst of my world crumbling down around me, I gave myself an inguinal hernia when I kicked a grill into the next county. I have been dealing with it since then. Doctor said it feels like both sides are affected and that I will be laid up for about a month. I will update when I can.
  14. I begged for this to happen at least 3 years ago, probably longer, so I am glad it has finally happened.   Here is a post of mine from 2012 regarding this. http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/topic/49841-legal-posting/page-2#entry780487 and another http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/topic/35773-walgreens-fires-pharmacist-after-defending-himself-and-coworker-from-armed-robbery/#entry595960 and one from 2011 http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/topic/33796-tenn-measure-oks-guns-at-work/page-2#entry567008
  15. I picked up one of the Bushnell 1-4 MIL FFP scopes and for the money it is a nice scope. You are more than welcome to take a look at it if you ever are in the Knoxville area. http://bushnell.com/tactical/rifle-scopes/ar-optics/1-4x-24mm-throw-down-pcl   I picked mine up for $150 when PSA had them on sale and at that price it is a deal. Still a good price at $200 but not worth much more than that. I still need to get a lot more rounds down range before I declare it a great scope but it is a good scope for the money.   My only wish is rather than BDC I would prefer a mil reticle so I can also range using it.
  16. I found something as good as my bee loads. I use #4 blanks from Home Depot. It will stun them from about four feet. And there is no chance of media damaging something. Works equally well with pistol as with a rifle.
  17. But squeeze bore guns have been used before. I have wanted to build one to fool some people at the range. It's 17 caliber but shoots 22. Here is a good read. http://shootingwithhobie.blogspot.com/2011/01/squeeze-bore.html?m=1 And another. http://fmgpublications.ipaperus.com/FMGPublications/GUNS/GUNS0111/?page=18
  18. Looks like a basis for a new wildcat. I will call it a 30-556. Fire forming cases will probably be a pain.
  19. Send me your address, I still have some bands left over.
  20. Not many of us can hold our hand up that long. Figuring 10 seconds a shot that means 300 seconds or 5 minutes. I could not hold my hand up that long without shaking without a gun. BTW, what kind of gun is it? A six pounder hand cannon would be harder to hold up too. As far as not being able to hit the center, move closer. It sounds like you shoot a lot so I bet if you move forward you will still outshoot the average person. Or get glasses. There is a reason most older guys tend to get into bench rest or other slow shooting sports. It is because we are not as strong, keen or as quick as we once were. But along the way we gain the wisdom we needed when we were strong, keen and quick.
  21. Yeah, with cast if it will chamber it will be safe so long as the rest of the load is safe. I have shot .313" cast Bullets in a .300"/.308" bore without issue.
  22. That is why I gave away 300 Blackout magazine bands. I knew a 300 could be fired in a 5.56 so I quite taking both to the range at the same time.
  23. I have shot .3's using prepped Winchester brass. But I won't do that any more. I was spending way too much of my shooting time preparing to shoot. By the time I went through everything I bet I had 5 minutes in each loaded round. I quit doing most of the prep but still do the flash holes.
