My Strange Gun trade today.....What yours?
Dolomite_supafly replied to urdubob's topic in General Chat
Not really, I can stick a gun in my pocket. I would pay to see someone do the same with a cow. Dolomite -
Mossber is releasing a "new" bolt gun. It is chambered in 223 and 300. It takes AR magazines, has a threaded barrel and has QD stock setup. You can swap in an AR style pistol grip and stock or a conventional style stock. It is called the Mossberg Flex. http://www.gunsamerica.com/blog/mossberg-flex-mvp-patrol-rifle-takes-ar-15-mags-shot-show-2013/ Expected to be under $500. And for the money you can't find a gun with any more features than this. And for even twice the money you would be hard to find a gun that does what this does. It is on my very, very short list of must haves. Just waiting for it to hit the market. Dolomite

Wire for target scope crosshair
Dolomite_supafly replied to graycrait's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
I wonder if you could use a piece of glass and have it laser edtched with the reticle of your choice? It would just need to be a flat piece of glass with no curve to it. Dolomite -

I have used human hair in the past to fix cross hairs. Worked great. Dolomite -
I got to thinking and building a blowback would be a lot easier than one would think. Only thing is whether to go with a square or round receiver. Dolomite

AR-15 quad rail install question
Dolomite_supafly replied to a topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
It sounds like the ones that clamp onto the handguard retainer at the front. If that is the case your gun need to have a rifle length system to use the 12" rail. It sounds like you have a carbine length system and if that is the case the clamp on quad rail will not work. You could get another clamp on block and place it at the rifle position to make use of the quad rails. I have done it and it works fine but it is not ideal. I am also local to you and can help you out if needed. Dolomite -

We need to get the word out. One thing the antis have that we do not is a comprehension and use of social media. They use social media regularly to get the word out while there are a lot of us who do not use things like Facebook, twitter or other forms of social media. That is also the sole reason why we failed to elect Romney. If we could offer and get more like mided individuals using socail media it will help us immensely. It will help now as well as in 2016, which will be a huge accomplishment if we win that election. I have often said we need to take the plays from the antis playbook and social media is one of the better plays they have. We also need to be more vocal through calling friends, family or engaging complete strangers to explain to them why we are the winning team. A person who is sitting on the fence will choose to be on the winning team and if they think we are it then they will side with us. Those who are diehard antis are not fence sitters and no amount of logic is going to sway them. But for the fence sitters I think we can make a huge impact on which way they will vote by being more vocal. Dolomite -
Today was the first time I opened this thread. I intentionally stayed out of it knowing this would be a hot topic right now. Dub, as far as what you did I have no clue whether you knew what company policy was before but if you did know it was against policy and did it anyway you should have been disciplined. Same as the policy of showing up to work on time or not taking a ton of breaks. If you didn't know then I can have a little sympathy but ignorance of the rules is not an excuse. I am not going to comment on whether what you did was morally wrong or right but I will say I would not have done the same. Does that make me morally better than you? I don't think so. I think the worst part was saying, publically, that your customers are idiots. Not all customers are idiots or as knowledgeable as you. That is why they come to you, or at least did, looking to you for advice. It may be true that some come across as idiots but that is where you need to stand up and try to educate them. Knowledge is power but the true power is when you are in a position to be able to share it. The fact you said the customers were idiots and that you don't care what the customers, or non employee customers as you put it, think probably is another reason why your employer came down on you so strongly. I suspect that was the biggest reason you were fired. Those customers, and what they think, make the business successful or a failure and to say you don't care shows you don't care about those customers that pay your paycheck. As far as who wrote the letter I have no clue. I can say with great certainty that neither of the two you accused are probably the ones who wrote it. Was it warranted? I know I wouldn't but one of your customers, who you said you don't care about, seemed to care enough to write it. I hope you are able to return to work before too long and I hope your next job is better than the last. And I hope your family doesn't have to suffer because of this. Someone asked me to close the thread but I am going to leave it open for now for discussion. As long as we don't start attacking members or start beating a dead horse I will leave it open. Dolomite

Yes, a rifle buffer is longer by ~2.65" so if you don't use a spacer like I mentioned you will loose your current buffer. And without the spacer you also need to use the rifle recoil spring in addition to the rifle buffer. Ideally what you want if the bolt and buffer to recoil fully WITHOUT impacting the bottom of the buffer tube very strongly. That is why I recommend an adjustable gas block to most people because most guns built today ARE over gassed. And over gassed guns have a very high bolt speed and this causes reliability issues as well as increases the felt recoil. That is why the companies started releasing the heavy buffers, to fix the over gassing issue. And if your gun came with the heavy buffer then it is likely overgassed. Your heavy buffer may be slowing the bolt down enough to reduce that impact, reducing velocity reduces energy imparted compared to just reducing mass. You can read my thoughts on over gassing here: http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/topic/56496-over-gassing-an-ar-and-the-problems-is-causes/?hl=gassed A perfectly gassed gun with a standard buffer has very little recoil. My lightweight 5 pound AR has less recoil than my 7 pound AR because of the lightweight being perfectly gassed. In a perfect world you would want a standard weight buffer to work. And for it to barely impact the rear of the buffer tube. I have made lightweight buffers and made sure the gas was correct. In those instances the AR is 22 lr like in the recoil. I will make you a deal. If I have enough material sitting around I will make the correct spacer for you to keep your current buffer and recoil spring. PM me your address and I will try to get it out to you in the next week or two. Actually I think I can make a spacer that uses the rifle recoil spring and a carbine buffer. Or if you want to keep your carbine recoil spring I can make that spacer as well. I just need to know what you want. Either use your current buffer and spring or use your current buffer and a rifle spring. I would HIGHLY recommend getting and adjustable gas block and tuning your rifle. These people make great blocks for the money: http://bte-usa.com/parts/gas-blocks.htm Dolomite

You can keep your carbine buffer and spring by adding a spacer at the bottom of the rifle buffer tube that is 2.65" long and .990" OD That is what I did on my last build. That way all you need it the rifle tube. The spacer can be plastic or metal or probably anything that is sturdy. I also put a 1/4" hole through the middle for pressure relief. Not sure if it is needed though. Dolomite

The first bit of steam as the temp comes up contains methanol. Methanol steam starts to run at ~150 degrees and ethanol steam comes on at ~170 degrees. Ethanol is drinkable and methanol will kill you. You need to run the temps at ~150-~160 until the steam stops then run the temp up to above 170 but below probably 190. This steams the ethanol but not the water. This will make sure you don't get methanol contamination in your ethanol. Or you can do like most do anyways and run it twice but following the temperature range like I mentioned before, ~150 until it isn't steaming then run the temps up to 170-190 If after you get past the methanol you let the temps get too hot you will only dillute the ethanol with water steam. You can run it again to extract more of the ethanol, leaving the water behind. If you run the temperature up too quickly or don't stop at ~150-~160 the methanol can contaminate the ethanol. This is where you hear of the health issues like blindness and death from drinking moonshine. It isn't that corn whiskey is any more dangerous than other types of alcohol but the maker has allowed methanol to contaminate the ethanol by not paying attention to temperatures. And yes corn mash WILL produce methanol. And the amount produces is enough to cause serious health issues if it isn't extracted. I have also heard of people adding battery acid to the mixture to speed up the fermination process. I have also heard of people running it through a radiator to cool it off. Both of these will cause serious health issues. I have been told if it burns anythgin other than blue or clear you will likely get sick. Dolomite

TWRA Requesting Public Input for 2013-2014 Hunting Seasons
Dolomite_supafly replied to R_Bert's topic in Hunting and Fishing
How about an open season on hogs. As a matter of fact make it a requirement to shoot on sight any feral hog a hunter sees. No day light hours requirement either. They are going to over run this nation if we don't get every person with a gun killing them. I do not hunt for sport, and haven't since 2001, but I would not mind hunting hogs. Dolomite -

Turn in your assault rifle get a $2000 tax credit
Dolomite_supafly replied to 10-Ring's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Going to be a lot of people making counterfeit guns. Heck if it does pass a lot of businesses will be selling back AW's to offset their tax bill. There are a lot of very, very realistic airsoft guns out there. There are some that even fooled the ATF. KWA makes one that has auto sears like a real AR, the bolt cycles and locks back. Very hard for most people to tell the difference. http://www.everydaynodaysoff.com/2010/02/28/airsoft-gun-seizure-apparently-toys-can-be-real-guns/ And they can be bought for under $400. Dolomite -

I have been on a perpetual state of readiness since October of 2009. Prior to that I was concerned but a bit complacent. But now I will not walk to the mail box or sit on the porch without a firearm. The reason is I have a relative that assaulted my mother then grabbed an AK and headed our way in 2009. The intent was to kill my family and I. He heard LE and fled into the woods where he had a standoff with LE. But bcause he has serious mental issues the courts dropped all charges ordering him to a mental institution. The doctors released him a few weeks later. Prior to this and since he has been saying he is going to kill us. He was arrested two weeks ago on aggravated assault charges after injuring our mother. He also threatened to use a firearm against her. Then he kidnapped her and would not allow her to leave. He took her keys and phone but she was able to escape. He was arrested and went to court but they sentenced him to time served after less than two weeks. That is because he agreed to plead guilty to domestic violence. He has been arrested several times for violent crimes. He plead guilty to felony drug possession and was released with a week. Because of this I am ALWAYS armed and always will be armed. I have multiple firearms ready to go that are close by or on my person at all times. I always have my head on a swivel and always making plans on what to do if something kicks off. I do this no matter where I am, at home, sitting in a restaurant or shopping at Walmart. I never walk out a door without looking around, even in public. I am determined that if I do have to defend my family or myself I will use an overwhelming amount of force to end the fight quickly, hopefully before my family or I get hurt. Dolomite -
A friend asked me to make her a holster for her Sig P239. She wanted one that looked used and distressed. It is missing the belt holes in the picture because I am going to make sure I get the angle she wants. She doesn't like her plastic holster that came with it. Dolomite

For the 300 you will find for deer hunting it will be equal to the 30-30. The reason is the bullet selection. Most bullets used in the 300 are ballistically superior to most you find in a 30-30. In Tennessee, where a 200 yard shot is a long shot, the 300 will work great. I shoot 245 grain bullets and 157 grain bullets out of my 300. And I would not heistte to take a deer with either at the ranges you find in tennessee. The biggest problem to getting a semiauto in 30-30 is the rim. I am sure there are some out there but I honestly can't think of any semi autos in 30-30. If you are dead set on a 30-30 I would grab a lever gun. They are nearly as quick as a semi auto and would be a million times more reliable than a semi auto shooting a rimmed cartridge. Dolomite
