When I was in country we had some Serbian M855 show up. It looked like the standard green tip stuff except it had all kinds of problems. When we first started seeing problems we said range only ammo. Then we found out it was so miserable we didn;t even use it for the range. We sent it with an EOD guy to through it on the "pile".   In the first picture it looks like one it an open tip design.   I will say that I have seen a dealer who painted ammo to resemble green tip. If you have worked your way down to a knife fight something has gone terribly wrong.   Having a bag around your body while in a fight is going to be a huge disadvantage. It allows the bad guy to have something to grab a hold of easily.   I would have a flashlight, pistol or shotgun and cell phone in close proximity at all times. No need to over think it or over complicate it. You just want the bare minimum needed to defend yourself.   If someone enters or attempts to enter my home I would grab my firearm, cell phone and flashlight. Then if I decide to actively find the bad guy I will move slowly move to the area of greatest observation with a light switch. I will try to avoid using any source of light as I move because I have the advantage while it is dark but when the area is lit up it evens the playing field.   Then, once in position, I would use voice commands to warn the bad guy to leave. This should give me an idea of if they are friend or foe and if they are foe I would call 911. I will try to use the lightswitch to light up the area before using a flashlight. Then if the bad guy becomes a threat I would remove the threat.   If you decide to stay put, which isn't bad either, then leave the lights off and use the flashlight to light up the bad guy if he enters the bed room.   Distance is your ally. The more distance between you and the bad guy the better off you are.   Dolomite

I am a HUGE fan of the 300 Blackout but unless you reload it is useless in a SHTF situation because ammunition is scarce, even now. For me 300 Blackout IS my end of times caliber, more so than 223, because I can cast for it. I can use powders designed for 223 with my supersonic or subsonic loads. And my AR is very tolerant of all the different kinds of powders. But unless you reload AND cast for it the caliber is probably one of the worst choices because of ammunition availability.   I would recommend a rifle, bolt action is the simplest, in 30-06. 30-06 has been a military round and is a popular hunting round so finding it in stores or in abandoned houses is possible. It is capable of killing anything in North America. It is a 1,000 yard cartridge in capable hands. You can still find surplus WW2 ammo because stocks are still very plentiful.   For the handgun I would choose a semiauto pistol and for this there is only one option. The Ruger MK series of pistols and the all steel version at that. The are very few all steel 22's and the Ruger is the most popular. This means the odds of finding one is probably higher than any other 22 pistol. And because it is all steel it will last lifetimes. There are Ruger MK pistols made in the 50's that are still being used today.   Dolomite

I don't think FFL's should report the gun at the time the background check is done. Added to the form after the approval, yes, for his own record keeping.   I also believe the lion's share of guns that are bought by those who are not allowed to have them come from "innocent" people who have no clue they are selling to people who are not allowed to own them. I have seen it myself a number of times when I was walking around the show with a gun for sale. I mention signing a bill of sale or having it transferred on my dime and they say they can't. I have even had one be completely honest and tell me he can't buy a gun but he would pay extra if I would sell it to him "no questions asked". I didn't because of the red flag but it happens all the time.   Don't believe me. Next time anyone is at the show with a gun for sale ask the buyer if they would mind having a dealer transfer it.    The problem is that criminals are being lumped in with the law abiding gun owners. We need to figure out a way to distance ourselves from that. Unfortunately, even on here, we hear of gun owners saying convicted felons or the violent should be allowed to own guns and I disagree. And a background on an individual, without reporting what was bought, is one way we can distance ourselves.   But like I said there is no easy solution to the problem. Just trying to discuss things rather than just shut down and hope for the best.   Dolomite

During the cleaning process I don't use any. I toss the sorted wheel weights, to remove zinc, in a pot and melt over propane. I scoop out the clips then pour the lead into ingots. This is where the majority of the smoke comes from but I wear a mask when working with it. But sometimes when I am waiting on it to melt I will remove the mask and go inside. And when I come out I sometimes I inhale some smoke before getting my mask on. Then in the pot itself I allow the oxidation build up on top to keep the air out of the lead. Then I cast the bullets from s bottom pour pot. I used to flux often only to have the crust build up. I have used wax as well as wood shavings. But when I just let the crust build up it rarely smokes. Dolomite

DPMS is the best for the money. I have used them for countless builds and they have always been great. I have seen issues with other brands. Your biggest obstacle is getting used to the fact you are going to have to use what ever you can get. All AR parts are in short supply right now. Dolomite

And for those who want to know the blood test costs $100. Blood is generally where the largest concentrations show up first. Than as the blood levels subside the levels increase in bone marrow. Not sure how long it will take or if there is even an issue. In speaking with the doctor he made it sound very remote but the symptoms seemed to come on as I ramped up my cleaning up lead from dirty wheel weights. Dolomite

Well like I said in the first port then. Background based on DL/ID number with no reporting of what was bought. And for face to face a person can call a 800 number with a DL/ID number of the buyer without reporting what was bought. Seems better than what we have now. And would be easier for a FFL as well. I seen a guy cuss out a commissioner during an arraignment. The guy would have been released after 12 hours on time served if he would have plead guilty. Instead he cussed her out without entering a not guilty plea. The commissioner asked if he could make bond and the guy said "F" no and continued to cuss the commissioner out. At that point the commisioner set his court date 3 months out and put the highest bond she could on him. He was really surprized when he couldn't get out for 3 months over what would have been a 12 hour sentence.   Dolomite

As a endorsement on a license it doesn't mean anything. I know several women who have HCP's yet don't own a gun. If you pass the background at the time you get your ID/DL it is an endorsement. Then you walk into a shop, show your license with an endorsement, buy your gun without a call being made or an upload on the internet.   Dolomite

Background checks are here to stay, they are not going away no matter how much you hate it.   So which would you rather have? A check that allows you to buy as many guns annonymously or a background check on every single firearm you buy? I guarantee they do keep track of who buys what right now. And "neither" is not the answer because backgrounds are here to stay.   In what I propsed the government would have no clue what you bought, only verifying previously by days or weeks that you are not a criminal or mental case. Other states do is using their HCP as criteria and it works well for gun owners. Why would it be a bad thing for us to be able to buy a firearm without a background check when you buy that firearm.   Just our of curiosity, how do you propose to make sure the person you personally sell a gun to isn't a criminal or a mental case? My brother, as an example, seemed like a normal person until he went crazy and tried to kill us. And he recently injured our mother during one of his "breaks". And he continues to be able to get guns from individuals. He meets all four conditions that restrict him from owning guns yet he still is able to get them from law abiding citizens.   Dolomite

Be aware of dust as well. Not an issue with loaded ammunition but at the range it is possible to be exosed to lead dust from either the targets or dirt backstops. Anytime you touch lead make sure to wash your hands before injecting anything.   I am having my lead levels checked this week because I cast my own bullets.   Dolomite

Then we add them. Those that have a mental defect, as determined by a doctor, that affect judgement and/or have shown to be violent should be added. I am not worried about those who are depressed, have an anxiety disorder or even PTSD unless it has been determined to affect judgement and/or be violent. The single common denominator in all the mass killings have been the mental state of the killer.   Just as a criminal, who is a danger to the public, has no expectation of privacy the same should hold true for the mentally ill who are a danger to the public. Once the mentally ill are found to be a threat to society their right to privacy, as it relates to firearm ownership, should be gone. Their mental illness should be made available to those who manage the background check system.   Everyone, on both sides, is having a hard time coming up with a solid solution because there isn't one.   As much as I hate to say it I would rather have a background, done like I described earlier, than have my guns legislatively neutered. By background I mean done once when you get your ID/DL then again only when you renew your ID/DL and not every time you purchase. This would eliminate a lot of extra work for the FFL's, eliminate the wait we sometimes have to go through as well as the $10 TICs fee every time you have a background done.   I realize nothing is going to be perfect and honestly I would love to be able to buy ANY firearm I want without a background check. But the background checks are here to stay so why not do it once every 4 years rather than once every few months. Just from a fiscal standpoint it is good for the gun owner and the FFL.   Dolomite

It would not be hard at all to tie your DL information to your background check information. Link the two and when you renew your DL there is an endorsement. And with that endorsement you can walk in and buy ANY firearm without going through a background check. You would still fill out the same paperwork except the FFL would not need to spend 15 minutes uploading your information or 5 minutes making that call. They just verify your information matches the form and that you have the endorsement. Seems like it would be a win for the FFL's.   Criminals are going to be criminals but if you look back at all the "mass" shooters they have all had mental issues. The check would be more about keeping the firearms out of those who have proven mental problems.   Dolomite    

A FFL would not be doing a transfer between individuals, only a background check. There will be no paperwork filled out. Or perhaps an endorsement on a DL that shows you are allowed to purchase without going through TICs. I know other states allow HCP holders to purchase without doing a background. And by all accounts it works well for everyone involved. Dolomite
