Something else to consider. I was once offered a job with an insurance company and they expected me to do sales calls in person. They said the average agent spent most days driving around to potential customers. They said expect to drive 3-4 hours a day. That is a lot of gas, maintenance as well as wear and tear on your vehicle.

Reloading? Is it that difficult?
Dolomite_supafly replied to serbu50's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
I would suggest a single stage or torret press before getting a progressive. Then when you get the nuances of it down sell thd press and buy a progressive. I personally like my single stage over my progressive. Other than that it is pretty straightforward. If you can bake a pan of brownies you can reload. Both are recipes and if you follow the directions and amounts you will be fine. -
How much is too much to pay for ammo right now?
Dolomite_supafly replied to LowBb's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Take a plastic 55 gallon drum. Cut the top out of it to make putting the steel plate in easier. Fill the bottom of the barrel with 12" of dirt, sand or mulch. Set the steel plate in the drum with the base of the steel plate against the rear of the drum then tilt the top of the plate towards the front of the barrel. That way the plate's top is angled towards the shooter. My steel plate is 18" wide and 30" tall. Be mindfull that splatter might perforate the side of the barrel with heavier hitting calibers. Also be aware that if the caliber will punch through the steel normally it will still punch through with this setup. I use mine for shooting 300 Blackout, pistol calibers and 22's. -
Does it look like any of these? https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&gs_rn=7&gs_ri=psy-ab&gs_mss=fast+reloading+re&pq=fast+reloading+revolver&cp=8&gs_id=8g&xhr=t&q=colt+ace&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.44158598,d.eWU&biw=1280&bih=649&wrapid=tljp1364297776478314&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=jolRUdKIJ5La8ASSi4DQDA

I know it can be dangerous but I got to thinking about this. In states where firearms, handguns specifically, are not allowed why not do this. Use a modern design such as DA/SA and make it a muzzle loader. Make the cylinders easily replaceable so you can reload like using a speed loader. You would be able to fire 6 shots then swing the cylinder out, drop the empty cylinder then replace it with another loaded cylinder. Chamfer the cylinder to make loading modern jacketed bullets easier. The cylinders would be muzzle loading cylinders so technically it would be a muzzle loading handgun and not regulated. Make it stainless so it can use smokless powder or blackpowder. Have a primer pocket in the cylinder to use modern primers. Just some ramblings.

I have been threatening to use one of the mare leg "pistols" to make a modern volcanic. If you could make them in a "standard" caliber I bet they would take off. Dolomite

I wonder if you could rechamber it in 45 Long Colt and then use cowboy loads. It would make finding brass easier but would probablt add $100 to the cost.

Selling Armor Piercing Ammo in TN
Dolomite_supafly replied to a topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Most ammo that is advertised as armor piercing is not actually armor piercing. M855 is not considered armor piercing even though it has a steel insert. Most ammo people call armor piercing is barrier blind ammunition, not armor piercing. And according to those in charge there is a difference. Dolomite -
Well then techincally those human hauler cars were hauling human hauling cars.

I sometimes forget there are wrong handed folks out there even though my son is one too. Dolomite

Are you left handed? I am right handed and always use my left hand to charge my rifles. I do it so I do not have to remove my firing hand.

Another Canadian blithers on US Gun Rights

That was because he was married to Jenny McCarthy at the time and that was her focus. He couldn't probably care less except he didn't want to be kicked out of bed. He is trying to remain relevant in a world he shouldn't even be in. -
It sounds like he has the seater die screwed in so far that it is applying a serious crimp to the case mouth. Then he tried to seat the bullets deeper after he already had a crimp. You need to do a full length size. Even new brass needs to be sized. Pull the handle down to the bottom of its stroke. Screw the sizing die in until it contacts the shell holder then add about a 1/2 turn. You want to make sure the sizing die ALWAYS touches the shell holder. Next you need to use the powder drop die to bell the case mouth. You want just enough bell that the bullet clears the case mouth. Most times you can't see or even feel the bell but when you set a bulet in the case mouth it is obvious. To set it you put the handle at the bottom of the stroke then you screw it in until the handle moves. Remove the shell and check the bullet fit. It is doesn't then add a 1/4 turn, lock it down and pull the handle to the hard stop with the case in the shell holder. Check it again and add a 1/4 turn at a time until the bullet just barely clears the case mouth. Too much bell work hardens the case mouth and will cause cracks pretty quickly. To set your seater die up do this. Loosen the die and loosen the seater pin. Put a piece of factory ammo in the shell holder. Put the handle of the press at the bottom of the stroke, I mean bottomed out on the hard stop. Then screw the die in until you see the handle barely move. Lock the die in place. Then tighten the seater die until it hard stops on the bullet. This will get you near perfect bullets. You might have to add a 1/8 turn to get more of a crimp but not much more than that.

Getting started on solar.....
Dolomite_supafly replied to Caster's topic in Survival and Preparedness
Last year I made a solor heater from about 200 soda cans. I put them in a box then covered it with plexiglass. I used a small solar panel to run a computer fan. In bright sunlight it raised the temperature 60+ degrees above what was going in. It recirculated the air from the inside. I seen plans the other day for cutting a 5 gallon bucket in half and using it to generate power with wind. It was pretty straight forward. Dolomite -

I bought about 20 of these with 48 LEDs: http://www.ebay.com/itm/White-24-48-LED-SMD-Interior-Dome-Panel-Reading-Light-T10-BA9S-Festoon-Adapter-/171002127347?pt=US_Chandeliers_and_Ceiling_Fixtures&var=&hash=item27d08563f3 You can also buy the automotive LED light strips. On Ebay they are about 1/5th the cost of in stores. The48 LED panels are extremely bright and are 12v. I will isolate the house from the main line and then flip every breaker in the house off. I will wire these into some sockets and screw them into the lamps. Then I will flip the breaker to connect them to a 12v battery bank that I have plugged into a socket in the garage. I just need to make sure all the 110v items are unplugged for a given area. My panels are smaller panels but they should recharge the batteries enough to prevent them from draining as long as I have sun once or twice a week. When i say bright I mean brighter than the flashlight you sent me. I have no illusions about what I want from my setup. All I want is light at night to keep the boogey man away. Dolomite -
I greased the crap out of it with moly grease. It helped a lot but it is still hard for me because of spring pressures.

How about "Can you purchase a firearm with the intent to re-sell under the occasional sales section of the GCA without having a FFL?" My whole point is you need a FFL if you are buying firearms with the intent to resell them. If you are buying them then reselling them that is not an issue unless you intended to sell them before you bought them. Dolomite
-
Never seen those before. I might have to change my feelings about this. Dolomite

Why an ambi? I find an extended one works extremely well and they tend to be cheaper to boot. Dolomite

If profits are what makes it illegal then you have admittedly broken the law. But it has nothing to do with profits. Well you have also said your intent when you buy every firearm is to resell for a profit. You are getting hung up on profits and profits has nothing, zero, zip, nada to do with it. Buying a gun for $1,000 with the intent to sell it for $1 is just as illegal as intent on selling it for $2,000. It is about intent, not profits. I mentioned profits earlier but profits do not determine whether a person needs to have an FFL. You are saying you buy guns with the intent of reselling them? If so then you need an FFL regardless if you are making a profit or not. There are no magical numbers for "occasional sale", that will be determined by the agent doing the investigating whether they are occassional or not. Could be a few or a few hundred but that is determined by the agent. It is likely based on whether the agent can prove the gun was bought with the intent to resell it. And as I said before it is hard to prove intent without substantial numbers or an admission. We are going in circles. Next time I have lunch with a member I make a call and ask so they can post it here. Dolomite

I am actually looking for a push button folder. This one works great and locks up solid but it can be a pain to unlock it. I looked at the various rails but I wanted the gun as light as possible. The SGM's work as good as the other mags I have. I have a factory 5 rounder, a few 5 round Keep Shooting mags, a few ProMags and some 10 round SGM's. I prefer stick mags to drum mags. I am going to cut one of the SGM's down to 8 rounds to make it a little more manageable. You can also cut the ProMags down to 5 rounds if you want to. Dolomite

For the dust cut a few dryer sheets in 1" squares. Toss those in with the media and it will collect the dust. Are you adding any type of cleaners or polishers? Might want to because that seems to reduce the dust as well. Dolomite

I size then tumble then prime because I am on a single stage. There is no issue with tumbling loaded ammo if that is what you want to do as well. I use Kaytee Lizard Litter, Desert Blend. It is walnut hulls that are small enough to not get caught in the flash holes. Dolomite

This is why they concern themselves with the bigger cases. It doesn't change the fact there are laws and the law has been broken when a person buys firearms with the intent to resell. Could be too that is is very hard to prove intent unless they are buying and selling a lot of firearms. Here is an ATF press release for someone who was prosecuted for "intent to unlawfully deal in firearms". http://www.atf.gov/press/releases/2013/03/032013-sf-sacramento-man-arrested-for-firearms-trafficking-offenses-involving-guns-purchased-in-nevada.html There is no problem with buying a gun then selling it for a profit unless your intent when you bought the gun was to resell it. Profit is not what breaks the law, buying it with intent to resell it is. You can sell and entire collection fo 100's of guns and be perfectly legal but once you buy a gun with the intent of reselling it you need a FFL. They choose to prosecute the bigger cases because it is easier to prove intent. Someone's intent is very, very hard to prove so it is only the big cases we hear or read about. As I said before if profit was the requirement then people could just say they lost money on the sale. And if the transaction was done in cash between two seperate parties who would know whether there was a profit or not. It is not about profits, it is about intent. I am sure we have an agent or two here on the board. Maybe they can chime in. If they want to stay annonymous they can PM me or someone else in this discussion. Of if someone local to me wants I can meet them and they can witness the call between the ATF and me. Dolomite

A single round of 9 pellet 00 buck at 1,325 fps has almost double the energy a single 55 grain 5.56 at 3,100 fps, 2,097 fpe vs 1,173 fpe. 12 pellet 00 buck has even more with 2,796 fpe. Overpenetration is going to be an issue with either if you miss the target. With a smaller shot size you can minimize the amount of overpenetration with a shotgun. I suspect most of the shotgun wounds you seen were from smaller shot, not 00 buck or slugs. Smaller shot was what was used by the Aurora shooter and that is why there was a high hit percentage but low kill percentage. Had he used #4 or larger shot the outcome would have been a lot worse. Chokes do not spread the shot, they shrink the pattern sizes. And a 9 or 12 pellet 00 buck will easily land inside a target at house distances if hit center mass even without a choke. Shot does not go wildly all over the place once they leave the barrel, it takes distance for it to spread. And it really doesn't matter the shot size the pattern size will be very similar between them. There is even accuracy enhanced buck shot loads that extends the range at which they are accurate substantially. Our go to gun for a very long time was a AR chambered in 9mm. It gave the same performance as a 357 magnum because of the longer barrel but the report was substantially reduced compared to a 9mm handgun or a 5.56 AR. But it too would overpenetrate if the target was missed. I am a huge fan of AR's but it would be far down on my list for a home defense gun, at least in 5.56. This is very telling: http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/bot14.htm All were shot into sheetrock walls. The 5.56, 30 carbine and various 00 buck loads made it through but not the #8. And see my video above if you think #8 is not an effective SD round at typical house distances. Here is another he did showing the penetration of the 5.56. http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/bot1.htm
