  1. I was being sarcastic. But I have seen it in recent times. When an electronic piece of equipment fails some people find themselves lost, both figuratively and physically.
  2.   Funny, I spoke of something similar in chat last night. Our son was in scouts and like many it was at a local church. His scouts was not like I remembered. Yes they did some scout activities from time to time but the majority of the time was spent doing religious activities. I liken it to sunday school because they would seperate into different groups and go read religious materials or do religious activities. We were often asked to donate to the church. My son didn't stay with it because he expected the scouts I told him about in which we did stuff related to scouting and not a church group that sometimes did scout activities between religious activities. And as much as I wanted him to stick with scouts I also agreed with him when he wanted to leave. We have never forced our religious views upon our son. What a person believes in is a personal choice and it should be up to them to decide who or what they belive in. I felt bad that the scout troop he was involved with used the scouts as a means to further or force their individual religious beliefs onto others that may not share their beliefs.   I openly support an individual's right to do what they want providing it doesn't affect another individual's right to do what they want. A person sleeping with the same sex in their own bedroom has zero impact on me or anyone else so I don't care.   I have zero issue with allowing anyone into the scouts providing providing what they discuss is scout related and not sex related. The last I remember sexual orientation or even talking about sex was not part of the discussion by anyone in the scouts. Being gay should not be discussed any more than being straight.   Just as before there will be gays in scouts that will try to keep it hidden but now there will be some who do not need to worry about keeping it hidden and can concentrate on becoming a better person. I think being a good person goes way beyond who you sleep with at night and I believe that just because someone is gay doesn't make them a bad person, their actions outside of the bedroom determine whether they are a good person or not. Trying to say that all gay people are bad is just as bad as some saying all gun owners are murderous psychopaths.   And for those who keep talking about morals let me throw this out. Morals change over time. Yes, everyone has their own beliefs in what is moral but it is the society that will determine what is considered morally acceptible. 50 years ago it was not morally acceptible to have a sexual relationship prior to marriage but today it is considered morally acceptible. 100 years ago is was morally acceptable for a 20 something to marry a teen but today society says that is not morally acceptible. 200 years ago is was morally acceptible to keep slaves but it is not today because society says so. I would be willing to bet the majority of us here have changed their moral stance on a few things in our lives.     And finally, a word of caution to EVERYONE. It seems like every time there is a controversial thread people say things they should not and people get banned. Be mindful of this fact as well as the fact we have ZERO issues punting a member if they cross that line. It isn't just name calling but also flame posts, racial slurs, and other insulting remarks meant to cause conflict. I already have one member that is going to be given a little time to "reflect". I don't want to do it to any others but I will if need be.
  3.   Then you surrender or give up.
  4. Yeah, ask Oh Shoot
  5. I have an app on my Iphone that automaticall tells me elevation, barometric pressure, temps as well as any other pertinent data. Heck it even calculates how the earth's rotation affects where the bullet will hit on those longer ranges.   It gets my exact location based on my distance from various cell towers then it gets and average for the weather data between them all.
  6. Does it read the down range wind?
  7. There still is a lot of skill involved in long range shooting. Reading the wind, thermals and distance are all critical to long range hits. As are individual skills like shooting position, trigger discipline and breathing.
  8. I have met the ex officer involved long ago when he was an officer with Grainger County. He had a history before this today. In 2000 his father, Chief Randy Holt, was the chief officer for Grainger county sheriff department. At this time his son (I believe), Jason Holt, worked for the department. I am not sure when Jason Holt left the department but his father, Randy Holt, went to 911 service in 2002 when the newly elected sheriff cleaned house. There were several brothers who worked for the sheriff's department at the same time and I assume they all left at the same time. The reason I remember this is I applied for a position and Chief Randy Holt told me he would hire friends and family before me. I thanked him for being honest and never applied again.   Prediction, because of who he is related to and who else is likely involved Jason Holt will not get what any of us would consider a fair sentence.   Maybe this will bring our county under the watchful eye of the state or feds. Our county's court system is screwed up. We are already being looked into for a disproportionately high amount of dismissed and time served cases. We recently had a DUI kill someone and get 48 hours in jail. Every week our newspaper is a list of dismissed charges that should be felonies.
  9. I seen this earlier today and thought to myself that they, as in the British government, has allowed the Muslims to gain all kinds of ground. I would be willing to bet if those who did the beheading go to tried they will try to use Sharia law to get off or at least a reduced sentence. They, as well as all of Europe, are having problems with the Muslims overtaking countries by force.   I fear this my be the US in the next 10-15 years.
  10. The reason I run a 3 way is because there is a lot of extra pressure with the 12" of barrel past the gas block when shooting supers. When I cut the barrel down to 9", with 5" past the block, the pressures will will be close enough that I do not need to seperate the super and sub pressures. I can tune it for the subs and the super pressures will not be an issue.   I will be adding a can and will tune it for use with the can to reduce wear and tear as well as keep the action much cleaner.
  11. If you only plan on running one type of ammo then an adjustable block will work fine. If you plan on shooting supers and subs then you will spend a lot of time turning the screw on the adjustablt. My 3 way is off-subs-supers and I can switch with a 90 degree turn of a switch.   In a barrel the differences would be hard to tell. I try to avoid cleaning anything I don't have to so for me SS is much better than carbon.
  12. I used 9mm dies to load some last year. Worked fine but you had to use a 38 Special case holder.
  13. Federal Protective Services.   I have worked closely with them in the past. Just like any other LE agency they have good officers and bad ones. I will say they try to make themselves kind of shadowy. I can also say that having them monitor your activities is a huge pain because they were sneaky.
  14. Cobb manufacturing makes a 30-06 AR. As a matter of fact they have replaceable magwells for a bunch of calibers.
  15. I use a chronograph to load. There is a correlation, I believe, Standard Deviation and vertical stringing when shooting at longer distances.   Everyone has their own routine for accuracy testing. I do it this way to minimize my time at the range. I can shoot at my house so I can determine SD's without being at a range. With my testing all components are as close to being identical as humanly possible. Cases the same, bullets the same, primers the same and all are loaded in the same setting. The only variable when I test will be the powder charge and overall length of the bullet. This is how I test loads for accuracy. I will load 3 rounds with the bullet I plan to shoot starting at the minimum powder charge and at the maximum overall length. Then I load 3 more but I add .3 grains of powder to the load and again at the maximum overall length. I do this, .3 of a grain at a time, until I start to see signs of pressure. I record the results then move on to the next powder and do the same. And once I find a load that has a SD I feel is small enough I start the load development.   With the same powder you will find a point where the SD numbers drop significantly. I think this is where the powder has reached is perfect efficiency. I have a 223 load that has a SD of 1.73 fps, which is amazing. I thought my chronograph was broke or the batteries were dead but after replacing the batteries it ran the same numbers again and again. And because the bullet exits at a certain part of the whip you need to find the position where the bullet exits at the same time. I normally load the 3 that had the smallest SD. Then I load 3 more with the same charge except I seat the bullet .01" deeper in the case. Then 3 more that are .01" deeper than the previous. Seating .01" deeper will change where the bullet exits during the whip of the barrel. I will generally start out seating .01" and stop at .10". That is unless I see pressure signs first. Then I take these loads and shoot them at a horizontal line on the target. I am not worried about lining up with a vertical line at this point. I try 100 or maybe even 200 yards. You are not worried about the horizontal, side to side, group size but vertical group size. That is if you have 3 rounds that are spread out over 2" vertically that means the bullets are exiting at different times during the whip. If you find that 3 rounds that are on that horizontal line, even if they are spread out horizontally, that means these are exiting very close to the same point during the whip.   I also prep my brass when I am trying to squeeze the absolute last amount of accuracy of the the gun. I buy brand new brass and use brass from the same lot. I trim them all then weigh then all and throw out any out of the norm. Then I uniform the flash holes and chamfer the flash hole. I uniform the primer pockets so they are identical. Then I neck size the brass followed by body sizing the brass. And when seating my primers I seat them using a die that allows me to set the depth so all primers will be the same height.   For my Savages I set the headspace at 0 using the sized pieces of brass. That is I loosing the barrel nut and tighten the barrel down onto the sized piece of brass without anything providing some clearance, like tape or paper or gauges.   What did all this work get me? A factory Savage barrel that shot .3's at 100 yards pretty consistently.   I haven't used this method for probably a year since I went to the 300 Blackout. I no longer shoot for the smallest groups on paper but do shoot for fun. I enjoy shooting clays and other reactive target so as long as my handloads are able to to that I am happy.
  16. Grab a Thompson Center Dimension. They have a similar setup. Then build a chassis for it.   Rifles are ~$600 and barrels are ~$200.   Shop costs to build what you are looking at is going to be more than that.
  17. You can get an aluminum chassis for Savages as well as Remingtons that use Ace folders. I will caution you the Ace folders do have what I consdier a significant amount of wobble. I sent one back a few months ago for what I thought was a manufacturer's defect because of the wobble. I was issued a refund with them saying the wobble was normal. This was not the puch buttom folder but their standard folder. I have been told by users of both that the push button is just as bad as the standard. The wobble was about 1/4" up and down and very bothersome, even on my Saiga.   For the quick change I would suggest a screw in setup like all bolt actions use now. The reason as it will be the most stable and the most accurate. Any type of slip fit has the potential to have accuracy issues. If you were to add a shoulder to the barrel to set headspace then add wrench flats to the barrel it would make barrel swaps super easy and super quick. I could see a caliber swap in under 3 minutes using the screw in method. I know you spoke of the EDM Windrunner type but it is no quicker than a shouldered barrel being screwed into an action. Of course the standard setup isn't unique or as cool but it does work.   I am going to red loctite the barrel nuts in place for my Striker barrels once I set the headspace. It will make caliber swaps possible in under 10 minutes. As it stands right now I set the headspace using confetti I made with a hole punch and paper of a certain thickness. I drop a piece of confetti on the bolt face, insert a piece of loaded ammo or sized brass, screw the barrel until it hard stops then lock the barrel nut down. That headspacing process takes less than 3 minutes. The time consuming part of it is getting the action out of and back into the stock. I plan on remedying that with a chassis that exposes the entire barrel, including the nut.
  18. I have heard of people saying it will eggshape the rear bolt pin on a 10/22. Get a shock buff and it is not an issue.   I will say that I have never had luck with these cycling in any of my semi autos. The firing cycle is too quick and caused malfuncitons for me.   I will say that unless your barrel is a 18 or 20 twist they are not going to shoot very well for you. BTW, the standard twist for a 22lr is 16.
  19. I see your 300WM and raise you to 338LM. http://www.onlylongrange.com/badnews.asp Semi auto 338LM.
  20. And finally, you can swap calibers at home without the need of a gunsmith. After the gunsmith breaks the barrel loose you never need a gunsmith again. You don't need headspace gauges either to set headspace. I have NEVER used a set of gauges to set the headspace on my guns.
  21. Get a Savage action, any model number except the Axis or Edge. Also, if you look at the rear of the bolt avoid those that have what looks like a giant flat tip screw, even if it is a standard model number. They are good but some are mid sized actions and there is no aftermarket support for them. And without knowing what you are looking for it is easy to buy one without knowing.   Ideally you want an action that has a round back receiver but the flat back receivers are fine. Accutrigger would be nice but the standard triggers are easy to get a nice trigger job on.   They made/make two actions, a long and a short. The short is going to be a model number with two digits like "11" while the long actions will have three digits like "110" or "112". The short actions are for 223 and 308 based calibers as well as short magnums. The long actions can be used for 30-06 based calibers as well as standard magnums.   I see Savage rifles in pawn shops for $300 and under regularly. The last Savage I bought cost me $250 from an individual.
  22. I was doing some training when we had a "professional" get sent home. This guy chatted himself up as a consumate professional the day before training. Then when we got to the range things went terribly wrong for him and could have for the rest of us. During the course of the first few hours he had been warned several times to quit sweeping people. Every time he would reload he held the gun right in front of his face, like he was instructed, but rather than have the muzzle pointed up he had it level and pointed straight down the line. On top of that everytime he dropped a mag, which was often, he would bend over and to keep his one legged balance he would point his gun hand to the rear with the pistol flagging instructors. So after several times of sweeping the line, and sweeping the instructors, an instructor called him over. They chatted for a minute or two and I never seen the guy again. Crazy part was the instructors gave him plenty of chances but the guy never got it. At one point before they sent him home they pulled him off to the side to do some dry run mag changes for like 30 minutes.
