  1. I have been waiting since April 1st for my NFA paperwork to go through. I am, in all reality, less than 1/2 way through the wait.   In 2011 my NFA paperwork came back in something like 97 days. I haven't even gone pending in 97 days this time.
  2. You might try taking up casting. For the cost of 500 bullets you can have everything you need to never have to rely on another for bullets. Lee molds are under $30, a pot is under $60 and a bottle of lube is under $6. And that is buying all new equipment designed for bullet casting. You can also use a hot plate, old pot and a dipper to pour bullets for a lot less. It may not be as fast as a bottom pour pot but it is still fast enough to be worth while. And if you shop around for those items I bet you can get everything you need for under $50. Heck, you could even use a gas grill to cast and I have seen some who do it over a wood or charcoal fire.   Then ask a few local tire shops for some lead. And it isn't as slow as some people think. I can easily cast 300+ an hour once I get into the groove. Cast bullets perform as well as almost any jacketed bullet too.   When I first bought my casting equipment is was not about saving money. As a matter of fact all my equipment sat for a very long time before being used. I bought it for a time, that I thought was far off, when I couldn't buy my own but decided to give it a try before that happened. Well it turns out that time is now for most.
  3. I have used soft Japanese water stones for a VERY long time. They work as well as anything out there and it is very hard to mess a knife up because they are slower than some of the other methods. Once you have a nice edge it is very easy to maintain it. It isn't that hard to learn to use them. And once your muscle memory has remembered the angle it gets a whole lot quicker.
  4.   Probably not. With all his "bad experiences" with LE I suspect he would have a hard time passing their background.   I have said it before and will say it again. Very few truly innocent people have had a negative experience, as in a single one, with LE and here we have someone has had several. I bet 99% of the people on this board have never had LE question them, much less handcuff them. I suspect he isn't as innocent as he claims and it is just that he hasn't be caught with the enough evidence to turn him from a "innocent bystander" to a criminal. Personally it sounds like he got caught up in something one of his friends was involved in. He even says most of his negative experiences have nothing to do with speeding so that begs the question, how did LE find their way to him? LE just don't randomly pick out the same person several times.
  5. At what point does a name become abuse? Imagine a child being named "Stupid" or "Kick Me Johnson" or what about an overtly offensive name like "N*gga Jones". Any one of those would mean their lives would likely be filled with hurt, regret and ridicule. And I, for one, would change those names above to prevent what would lead to a life of misery for a child. Emotional abuse, especially for a growing child, can be just as damaging as physical abuse. And names like those above would most assuredly lead to emotional problems. So I ask, for the sake of asking, at what point would it be ok to change a name?
  6. I have serious issue with parents who name their children names that will obviously cause the child emotional, and likely physical, harm. Messiah isn't one of those names but there are plenty of examples out there that a child should never be called. I can see the point of changing a child's name from "Satan" to something else for the welfare of the child but not "Messiah". If it wasn't Michael Jackson's kid "Blanket" would be a name I would change but because he will likely never spend a day in public school it will not be an issue.   Then again, who am I to tell someone else what to call their child. We already have the government trying to tell us how to live every other part of our lives.
  7. Try not breaking the law and you might not have a negative experience. Funny how people complain after they have broken the law. I am a critic of bad officers but a officer writing you a speeding ticket is not a bad officer nor is it the officer's fault. Trust me when I say the vast majority of officers would rather not stop anyone and put their lives at risk.   Tasers help prevent injuries everyday and not just those from gun shot wounds. It prevents injuries that occur when chasing bad guys. It prevents injuries that occur when officers have to fight people for control. I would support using a taser over fighting or chasing a bad guy any day of the week. And any injuries caused to the bad guy during the use of the taser is not the officer's fault but the bad guys fault. They should have not chose to run or fight.   As far as the child a taser can go 20+ feet and an 11 year old with a 20' lead can probably out run a cop for 2x times that if they are in half way decent shape. That is 40' and if the girl was within than 40' range of the highway the taser may have saved her life. If you take an overweight, out of shape officer and pit them against most 11 year olds the child will run circles around them.
  8. 53 grain Sierra Match Kings will come apart at 3,200-3,300 fps when fired out of a 7 twist barrel.   I will also say that I have yet to have a published load meet the published fps in a real gun. I have chronographed dozens of published loads in several different calibers and they NEVER reached the published velocity.
  9. Twist is what kills a bullet. As long as the twist is appropriate the bullets will be fine. A 7 twist will sling a 223 bullet apart at 3,200 fps.
  10. I read an article about a guy back in the 60's who pushed a bullet to 10k fps. The casings were different in the rim was on the inside of the case. This allowed the entire case to be supported and in turn able to increase pressures. I will try to find the article as the concept was amazing as well as safer than anything out today.
  11. A potato, I hear they work really well. Engraving is a pain but afterwards you can have mashed potatoes.
  12. I live with this kind of stuff every day. I live in a small town and the behavior can be described as cult like in how they protect certain families. The last three sheriffs we have had, except one, has had charges filed and then they are tossed out by the judge. Had one sheriff who was on THP roles at the same time as being sheriff. Not sure how he figured he wouldn't get caught but he almost made it 4 years before they did. The next one, and several of his officers, was indicted on insurance fraud. All those were handled behind closed doors. And if you are a prominant family you can be assured to get any charges dismissed, not like they don't do it for normal people at an alarming rate too. And the reason why is our county's inmates cost the county money so they try to house other counties inmates to make money. In the process a lot of criminals get released that should be in jail for a very, very long time. The current sheriff has rumors of what he, and his crew, were/are involved in before he took office and if it is true he will have the rest of the sheriffs beat. He signs my NFA paperwork without batting an eye so I am happy with him but there are some that are not.   And it isn't just the criminal acts that get taken care of. Our tax assessor's brother has some property he bragged about getting for $1 million dollars. He added sewer and water, roads for a subdivision as well as a a $300K+ building and a huge apartment complex to the property. And after all this it still assess for only $269K. Last year his 520+ acres appraised for $110K when it had the $300K building on the property. When I asked him about it during my appeal when I felt they charged me too much in taxes, oh yeah he is on the tax assessment appeals board, he said the downturn in the economy really hit him hard and it is not worth what he paid. BTW, adding a new $5K HVAC system to a home increases the value by $25K according to the tax assessors. His property borders a highway and is level land that by all accounts very desireable yet it appraises for $500 an acre with all the improvements. His home sits on 53 acres and appraised at $84,000 last year and $27K the previous year. I would really like a law passed that would say that a person could be forced to sell their property for 3x the tax value that way everyone would make sure their taxes were correct and that they are paying their fair share. I mean how is is possible for someone to own what is probably $3M+ piece of property and it only appraise at $269K. Those numbers are not after the 25% reduction either, for his actual taxes paid divide these numbers by 4 and that is what he actually pays taxes on. So he only pays taxes for $67K of assessed value in taxes on his $3M+ piece of property. That works out to only $1,687 according to the current tax bill which is still waiting to be paid. BTW, this is the same guy who was caught being paid for working a ghost shift in Knox county when it can be proven he never worked for Knox county. In that case all charges were dropped if he agreed to repay the $120K he stole.   I absolutely hate criminals, all of them, but I especially hate criminals that others aspire to be. Most people would hate to be a murderer or rapist but there are people who would not mind being a corrupt person in government.
  13. Exactly 3 shots until the barrel is toast and the muzzle blast is the only noise that can be heard in space. And Chuck Norris IS afrad to shoot this.
  14. And besides had you killed it you would have had to pay for a pregnant female with twins. Every single animal that was killed by Americans over there seemed to be pregnant with twins.
  15. For my carry, yes everyday, gun I carry a full size 1911 that is all steel. It came with an extended thumb safety that I removed immediately and replaced with a standard small one. The reason is I have seen those extended ones get bumped off too easily without someone noticing. It has an extended slide release because my hands are smaller and I need to be able to reach it. I run a commander style hammer and a beavertail. I also have a fully adjustable trigger that has less than a 1/16th inch travel. The trigger pull is ~3.5 pounds and very crisp. I replaced the factory firing pin stop and the extractor with Ed Brown versions. The firing pin stop is square and not radiused. I do this on every single 1911 I buy, new or used even if they run fine. I run a 16 pound recoil spring and a 20 pound mainspring as well as a shockbuff. I replace the springs every 1,000-1,500 rounds ad the shockbuff if it looks worn. I also run a 4 finger sear spring rather than the traditional 3 finger, this helps tune individual parts within the gun without affecting others. And finally I added a Kart barrel bushing.   For sights they were 3 dot but I darkened the two rear dots and redrilled a center dot in the rear. I drilled out the white dot on the front. I then added a mixture of epoxy and glow in the dark powder to both the front and rear sights. The glow in the dark powder is brighter than any tritium sight. A 1 second blast from a flashlight will charge it and they remain brighter than any tritium for about 6 hours. And if it needs a recharge it just takes another 1 second blast of light. I used high quality glow in the dark powder, not the stuff you find in local stores. And when mixed in with two part epoxy it is impervious to any solvent you might use on your gun for cleaning. I have also used the same epoxy with titanium dioxide for white dots. Titanium dioxide is the whitest substance known to man. The cost of the glow in the dark powder and the epoxy is under $30 and you could probably do 100 guns with the amount you receive.   I have over 3,500 rounds through my 1911 so far and can't recall every having a single issue. I carry it every day and it looks like hell but it is reliable and accurate.
  16. When belling the case mouth only flare enough to keep the bullet from shaving. The bell should be hard to see, if you can at all, and even harder to feel. The biggest failure of straight walled cases is the case mouth splitting and this is caused from excessve belling.   Secondly, with straight wall semi auto calibers the case mouth is what sets your headspace. So you need to make sure the crimp does not go so far as to remove the lip of the case mouth. I do not crimp my semi auto straight walled cases. I set my die up so it removes what little bell I have. If you apply too much crimp two things can happen. First the cartridge might fall too far into the chamber to fire, this is the good option. The bad option is the cartridge falls far enough forward that the throat holds the case mouth closed and the round is able to fire. This will cause astronomical pressure spikes and I believe 90% of pistol kabooms are a result of this, especially those who claim the load was not close to max. You have to have enough of the case mouth exposed to have a lip. And for me it must have enough lip for my fingernail to catch it.   Make sure the range pick ups are all boxer primed. Some brass cased ammo is berdan primed and can break the decapping pin on a Lee setup. To see what kind of brass a casing is you have to look inside. If it has one central hole in the middle it is boxer primed and can be loaded using your Lee. If it has two holes then it is Berdan and they will break your decapper pin if you do not catch it.   And finally, make sure to clean the brass if it has ever touched the ground. You can tumble them or you can wash them using Lemishine. The reason is all it takes is a single piece of sand to ruin your dies. It will scratch the inside of your die and then every piece of brass sized after that will have a corresponding scratch. Also, inspect any nickle plated cases very carefully because a flake of the nickle will also scratch your dies. Most will flake if you bell the case mouth too much too.   There is no need to lube the cases if you are using carbide dies but I do. The reason is it makes sizing so much easier. Without lube it works but requires a lot more force. When you have to size 500 pieces of brass it can get very tiring if the cases are not lubed. When sizing lubed 45 ACP I can literally use a single finger, without lube it takes my whole hand and a lot more force. For lube you can make your own using lanolin and alcohol. It is cheap, easy and lasts a lifetime.   One more thing. With Glocks be mindful that cast bullets can cause significant leading in the bore. That leading increases pressures significantly and can cause problems. I have talked to Glock owners and they said they put a round with a jacketed bullet at the bottom of each magazine to keep things from going south.   As far as the Lee dies go they work great for the money but I now prefer RCBS over Lee for most of my reloading. The reason is the RCBS has replaceable decapping pins if they break. The decapping stem is threaded to prevent slipping that sometimes happens with Lee dies. I have had more issues from Lee products than RCBS but Lee makes it right.
  17. Old enough to witness the signing of the Tennessee Constitution.   You can also get a lifetime permit if you become disabled or if you are a disabled vet. I forget the percentage for the vet but I qualify so it isn't 100%.   I really miss fishing. It was one of those things Sour Kraut and I really enjoyed. I will eventaully get a boat so we can fish again.

  19. How easy is it to flip the safety on or off with that pistol grip?   That is why I sold my Mossberg, pistol grips and Mossbergs don't play nice together. I just kept mine off of safe and the chamber empty until I sold it.
  20. Yeah, imagine the GPS system they are testing going mainstream and put in use at every major airport. Then terrorists use these inexpensive jammers to cause all kinds of havoc. Pretty sure there is a Die Hard movie about this.   They could either jam the airport or take one of the jammers on the plane, either way would probably cause a significant scare.
  21. I would use head mounted for 99% of the night time shooting I would do. I had a laser and a Eotech, I would zero one at 25 yards and the other at 50 yards. And as long and the targets (jackals) were centered between the two dots it was a hit out to 300-400 yards. It also makes shooting pistol a little easier with a head mounted setup.   I really do need to get a NV setup. It would make my suppressed, night time nuisance animal eradications a lot easier.
  22. Try driving in Afghanistan. There is a highway leading into and out of Kabul that is equal to a 8 lane. They are 4 two lane roads right next to each other with some curbs and some painted lines seperating them. It is a mad rush with cars going opposite directions in the same lane and weaving into and out of the other lanes of traffic. On top of this you have the motorcycles, pedestrians as well as the occassion cow cart. I seen some of the most amazing close calls over there.
  23.   A vendor, or anyone else, should be able to sell to anyone they want to or refuse to sell to anyone they want to. And the reason, any reason, shouldn't matter or even be brought up. If I refuse because of who they are that should also be my decision and not someone elses. If I refuse to sell to someone because they are Canadian then that should be my decision. No one else, including the government, should tell me I have to sell to Canadians. It is not discrimination when I refuse to sell to a Canadian, it is just a business deal I do not want to complete.   I can and should be able to hang a sign that says "No Canadians allowed" if I do not want them on my property. Why should I be forced to sell to someone, or have them on my property, that I do not want to just because of who they are? And honestly why would someone want to be in a place where they are not welcome.   I would support a vendor who sells to anyone they choose even if it is not my choice. My choice should never come into play in a deal that doesn't involve me. So yes I support them and their decision to sell to those in my example.
  24. Ok guys, if you are going to beat my wife up over the use of poisonous vs venomous I suggest you go back and check your own posts. Both of you have numerous mispellings. If you are going to judge someone else you might want to make sure you don't fall out of that ivory tower doing it.
  25. I live in a very rural area so mice, moles ans shrews are pretty common. We have never seen a mouse in our house or evidence they are here other than the times one of our cats snuck in with one in its mouth. Our cats leave body parts and whole bodies laying around every day.   We see snakes every year but this has been the most active year in a very long time.
