With the Hornet you could use pretty much any scope you wanted because there is little recoil. Do you have a picatinny style rail or the factory scope setup? I would not worry about the oversized pins as long as the gun locks up tight. Here are the three places I look for barrels and parts: http://www.encoreclassifieds.com/forum/index.php?t=i& http://specialtypistols.infopop.cc/eve/forums/a/frm/f/7946077864 http://www.ebay.com/ If you are wanting the best prices on new, and some used, barrels go here: http://www.edstc.com/

Make sure you can shoot it first if you do decide. There are a lot of CETME rifles with problems and Century has issues as well. Personally I wouldn't.

44 mag reloading technical question
Dolomite_supafly replied to gregintenn's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
A lot of people don't think it but a chronograph is just as important as your press or your reloading manual. A chronograph ensures your hand loads are safe. It also speeds up the load development process. And with a chronograph you can map your ballistics table without the need to shoot long distance. -
I wonder how they sell those super, duper safeties? I have searched high and low and can't even find a picture much less a way to buy it.

Man in Clarksville pulls gun.... Permit Holder??
Dolomite_supafly replied to a topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
I would like to hear what the justification for self defense was. It would either be a justified self defense situation OR a case where witnesses did not show. I do not believe the court would rule it as justified, as he claims, just because the witnesses did not show. If the witnesses did not show they would likely have just dismissed the case rather than rule it justified. But in the end I believe, like Duck says, it was a case of the witnesses not showing up and the court deciding to dismiss the case due to lake of evidence. Then because the case was dismissed Mr Bogle believes, mistakenly, that it means it was justified. There is a big difference between a court ruling it as justified and a court dismissing the case. Just because a case is dropped doesn't mean a crime was not committed, just that it may not be able to be proven (lack of witnesses) or that it is cheaper to drop the case than prosecute. Sounds like he got extremely lucky but as we all know people like this will eventually find themselves under the scrutiny of the law again. I contacted the courts but unfortunately they do not have an online research tool like some other counties. -
Not all barrels come with sights but all are drilled and tapped for a scope mount at the rear. Having a front sight added is an easy affair for most smiths. For rear sights you can find them on the used market for under $30 for a basic sight. They make several versions of the rear sight but from what I have read a Contender sight works only on a Contender. I bet your locking lug is a one piece because of the hard to open frame. Twin locking lugs will make it easier to open as well as trimming the spring. Something else I did was to slightly polish the top of the locking lugs then add grease. And I will try a few more things on mine in the coming weeks to see if they help with mine. I have an easy open frame but I think I can get it to open smoother with about 10 minutes worth of work. To check to see if you have a single or duel lugs just break the barrel open. Then right under the extractor there should be a flat area that is a little shiny. Those are the lugs. Try pressing on the lug on one side of the extractor. If both sides of the lug go in then it is a single lug. If only one side moves in then you have duel lugs. I can see me owning several more Contenders before this is all over. I now own two but always looking for more.

I bet the "positive reset" is code word for trigger slap. At $500 not a lot are going to be sold.
-
Does your Contender have a push button to switch from rimfire to centerfire or a switch on top of the hammer?
-
Also, if you have a single locking lug replace it with twin lugs. That makes it easier to open in most cases.
-
I believe there is a way to fix it. It requires some filing on the locking lugs but I am unfamiliar with the particulars. Specialty Pistols is where I read about it. I plan on trying a lighter trigger guard spring for mine.

TN Parent Arrested Trying to Pick Up His Own Kids
Dolomite_supafly replied to Oh Shoot's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Jumping line is not against the law. Yeah it pisses people off but what law have they broken? And more importantly what remedy can someone get against someone who cut in line? Nothing. People can bitch, grip and complain about it but beyond that nothing else can be done unless the property owner/manager decides to ask the person to leave the property. If a parent chooses to walk rather than wait it is not their fault the rest chose to sit along side of the road. The officer kept on using inflammatory adjectives to try to provoke the parent into a confrontation but he didn't bite. And when he didn't bite it upset the officer so he arrested him. The officer should be fired and charged criminally for kidnapping both the parent and the children. The sheriff should be charged with obstruction of justice for not investigating and suspended until another election can he held. The school principle should be fired and charged as well for being a coconspirator to the kidnapping of the children. And the taxpayers of the county should pay these parents millions for electing the sheriff but not before the officer, the sheriff and the principle are court ordered to give all their property and assets to the parents. Maybe when people like this start having to live under a bridge with their families they will see the error of their ways. But what is going to happen is nothing. The officer will continue to work there and will stand behind the immunity of being a member of the sheriff's office. I hate officers that over step their authority and this was not a baby step but a world record leap. -
TN Parent Arrested Trying to Pick Up His Own Kids

I bet the next step will be the parents will be barred from school property. Also, I never heard where the father said he parked. He said he wanted to walk home with his kids. -
TN Parent Arrested Trying to Pick Up His Own Kids

http://cumberlandcountytn.gov/sheriff/ Butch Burgess, Sheriff 90 Justice Drive Crossville, TN 38555 Phone (931) 484-6176 Fax (931) 456-7582 Also, not a bad idea to call these people and ask what is being done: http://cumberlandcountytn.gov/county-commission/ http://cumberlandcountytn.gov/mayor/ I have seen people get arrested for DC then a few officers joke about it being for "contempt of cop". That was pretty isolated though. What is a lot more prevalent though is arrests for PI. I have seen officers use public intoxication as a catch all because it is very hard to disprove because it is based on the officer's observations and not any type of testing. When arrested for PI the arrestee is NEVER, at least from what I have seen, given any test to see if they are intoxicated. I have seen people who were completely sober get arrested for PI. And in every instance they said they were arguing with the officer. Not saying every officer does this but it does happen. This stuff sickens me. The schools have too much control and power over our kids and the SROs are used as the muscle to enforce policy, not law. -
Also, OneManCoyote is the Contender expert on the board. He has shot them in competition and owned them for 20+ years.

I have a 22lr and a 300 Blackout. I spent 20 years debating on buying one. Now that I have bought one a few months ago I decided to buy another a few days ago. I will say that when I put a scope on the 22 I could touch the rounds at 35 yards. The 300 Blackout is fun too but it will be getting a suppressor real soon as will the 22.

Planning 300BLK pistol build (advise wanted)
Dolomite_supafly replied to c.a.willard's topic in Handguns
Be aware that a standard A2 birdcage will not fit. The A2 are 1/2-28 and a 300BO barrel is 5/8-24. I ALWAYS use a Hogue grip on all my ARs. They are the best feeling grip out there. Here is the gas block I bought and it is a work of art. And for $50 shipped it is a great deal as well. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Stainless-Micro-Adjustable-Gas-Block-750-Mil-Spec-556-Made-in-USA-By-BTE-/181243919159?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a32fabb37 For a barrel just find something that fits your WANTS. I used a McGowen but there are plenty of other barrels cheaper that will work well. Alpha SHooting Sports generally has them in stock for not a lot of money. Here is one: http://www.shop.ar15hardware.com/NEW-PRODUCT-8-300-Blackout-Pistol-Barrel-ALP8300BOCM.htm If you want to discuss the 300 I can give you my number. -
Up until the shots were fired the officers actions were spot on. As a matter of fact there was a lot of restraint used. Had someone ran from me then refuse to get out I would have not argued or tried to "discuss" but tazed the driver to prevent their escape again. There would have been no discussing the situation. The officer is wrong in trying to talk to the mother because he should have already had her on the ground and in handcuffs. And if the boy came around that van on me I would have tazed him too as well as anyone else who tried to attack me. Breaking the windows out was needed to gain access to the driver who, as we see, tried to escape yet again. In the end I hope the mother and the officer who fired at the van get some long term sentences. The boy should spend some time in juvenile for attacking the officer as well. Problem is the bad officers we hear about every day makes people think they can refuse or resist any officer and that is not the case. And even if the officer that pulled her over was 100% wrong for doing so the driver cannot just refuse to comply or fight the officer. She has the courts for that. When civillians are allowed to physically resist officers when they think they are being wronged we will fall into anarchy shortly after. What is going to happen here is the mother will have all her charges dropped because of one officer and this will serve to embolden her and others to try to fight officers. She will cry it was because she is black and everyone involved will get weak in the knees. She will get a multi million dollar settlement that the taxpayers will have to cover and all this because SHE, not the officers, decided it was ok to fight on the side of the road rather than in court. Funny thing is the offier that fired is black but that will will not be mentioned when the lady cries racism.

Not necessarily. Anything 2,600 fps is the accepted fragmentation velocity with FMJ. So as long as the bullet is going at least that fast when it tumbles it will fragment. And as long as you have a twist slow enough to tumble then you will fragment. Now if you have a twist rate too fast it will not tumble and more than likely will not fragment unless the velocity is fast enough to cause the bullet to fragment without tumbling. And that velocity is much higher than 2,600 fps.
-
9 twist will shoot anything I might load or find. And it is still slow enough to tumble which starts the fragmenting process. And even if the bullet doesn't fragment the act of tumbing creates a larger wound channel. 8 twist will not do anything for me that a 9 twist doesn't already do. It would serve exactly the same purpose as a 9 twist except it would not tumble as quickly as a 9 twist. 12 twist results in near instantaneous tumbling when shooting 55-62 grain bullet. And the tumbling is was causes the bullet to fragment. 7 twist generally does not tumble inside of a smaller target with a 55 or 62 grain bullet. So the bullet just passes through and acts like a 22lr. And if the velocity is below 2,600 fps it can't even fragment even if it does tumble. There are tons of stories of soldiers shooting bad guys dozens of times and the bad guys continue to fight. This is because the 14.5" barrel reduces the velocity enough the beyond 200 yards the bullet will not fragment even if it did tumble which most times it doesn't because the twist is too fast. Here is a pretty good read on the subject. http://stevespages.com/pdf/5_56mm_military_info.pdf Tumbling can reduce the velocity needed for fragmentation but if the twist is too fast the bullet will never tumble and in turn never fragment. This is why we are hearing of the problems overseas. We have reduced the barrel length which causes a reduced velocity, on top of that they have increased the twist. The combination of a slower bullet that is spinning faster results in a bullet that is too slow to fragment and spinning too fast to tumble. Which results in a 22 lr type wound. What happens when a bullet is overstabilized is it will not tumble. And the tumbling is what leads to the bullet fragmenting. And it is this fragmenting that does the damage. When the bullet can't tumble it can't fragment and will only pass through. Now this can be mitigated using different bullet designs but for most tumbling is what you are wanting the 223 to do for best results. Velocity can also cause the bullets to fragment but the velocity has to be high enough to force the bullet to loose its structure integrity. This is the reason why we are hearing all the poor reports from soldiers overseas. The bullets are being overstabilized which kills the hopes of tumbling and the velocities have been reduced by the heavy bullets which kills the hopes of the bullet coming apart from velocity. We never heard of complaints from the military until they shortened the barrel to 14.5" and went to a 7 twist barrel. There is a reason for this. Also, a 7 twist will not shoot the lightweight varmint type rounds. I know because I have watched them turn into gray mist 25-35 yards out of the muzzle of a 7 twist gun I owned. A 9 twist barrel will shoot 40 grain bullets and all the way up to a 77 grain bullet. A 7 twist barrel will not shoot anything under 50 grains without the risk of the bullet coming apart under its own centrifugal force. And the 8 twist barrel is the best of ALL worlds. It will shoot any weight of bullet that can be fed from the AR magazine. There is nothing to gain with a 7 twist unless you are shooting tracers exclusively. A bullet that is spun faster than it needs to be will be less accurate than the bullet that is spun to the correct RPM. If you look at all the sucessful long range benchrest shooters they are using barrels taht have a very slow twist. There is a reason for this. Dolomite

Up until the shots were fired the officers were 100% correct. People think they can just do what they want without consequences. I hope they charge the mother with aggravated child abuse and take her kids. The son should be charged but not to anything substantial. The officer that fired should be charged with aggravated assault.

Most 9 twist guns will stabilize up to 77 grain out to a couple of hundred yards. I have shot thousands of 69 grain SMK's out of a 9 twist and they have been stable to 400 yards. I am sure they would be stable beyond that but I never checked the farther targets. As a matter of fact the most accurate load in my gun a 24.5 grains of Varget under a 69SMK. It has proven to be a 1/2 MOA shooter. It also worked well in my 9 twist Savage. The change to 7 twist was because of tracers, not because we went from a 55 to a 62 grain bullet. The tracers are a bit longer and would not remain stable in a 9 twist even though they weighed ~62 grain. The 62 grain M855 is perfectly stable in a 9 twist. I shoot 62 grain bullets in my lightweight 12 twist AR and they are stable to 100 yards. I might toss a few at 200 yards the next trip to Norris to see if they are stable to that distance. My gut feeling is they will not be but even if they hit sideways it doesn't make them any less lethal. 7 twist will sling the jackets off some lightweight bullets. 8 twist will not but 8 twist will also stabilize any bullet weight that will feed from a magazine. My first choice in twist is ALWAYS 9 twist, second is 12 twist and then 8 twist.
