My wife is getting ready to go to Memphis for a few days. I am unable to accompany her so she will be carrying. She has her HCP but I was wondering if there were any areas where she cannot carry on her person or in her vehicle? Thanks

My Saiga has been shot by others way more than by me. I have laid 100 round packs on the benches at the range and told people to shoot it up. I get just as much enjoyment letting others enjoy my guns.

No. My next project involves an appeal letter to the ATF for a reversal of a decision they made in 2010. I do not like, am not a big fan of, shooting shotguns. The recoil bothers me.

Very interesting walmart tactic...
Dolomite_supafly replied to serbu50's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
I was in Walmart a few days before Christmas. I stopped by sporting goods and seen a line of about 10 or so people. From the looks of it most were picking up guns. There were some 22 on the shelf as well so who knows. I was looking at some scopes when I seen some adults act awful. Well a mother, and her son who didn't look 10, were there picking up his Christmas present. He was getting a nice bolt action 22 which was probably his first "real" gun. After the background they began ringing up the purchase but before they paid they asked for a few boxes of 22. They weren't getting all of it but you wouldn't know it based on how the adults were acting. The second she asked for the two boxes a universal "huff" came from the crowd followed by comments about how it was BS followed by a lot if whispering. It was enough that the mother was looking around to figure out what was going on. Hopefully the kid didn't catch on but the mother sure did. I say this because something needs to give when adults are bitching about a kid getting a gun and ammo.- 39 replies

Yeah. The application to "make" anything is $200 regardless of what if is. That is unless are licensed to make them to sell.

Here is an ATF opinion letter saying a pistol grip shotgun with a 17" barrel is NOT an NFA item because it is 26" long: https://e8c9b3ab-a-62cb3a1a-s-sites.googlegroups.com/site/openatf/2010-778.pdf?attachauth=ANoY7cq8mLzTTqAv99BUAGTGtxWK2Y3RRaBxwFflnnUKqWOOlTZn6CYPTn-JO5lGY9JGOuflZX2TwfmLBFPICKEbiQM6lYAk-VKkql69Nb7GUbcccmeTn0gzLyfkL95-RNzoVwAeQa7-ZgGHfF6m8Cw7NO_7H9rTSML-1savxrfwxj5PIQL5FryNBgdzX05sfIDvk4a1VSgxz8a9ME3Ta8V4HumZtHRGMg%3D%3D&attredirects=0 And another letter: https://e8c9b3ab-a-62cb3a1a-s-sites.googlegroups.com/site/openatf/2010-1005.pdf?attachauth=ANoY7cr-sprJ64N8kdoFMmEsUUUctdNGeqR_qoNEl_L5M5ByzimCzlZ4EL9Pcb8g6hhgFCQgA77-n3c6QsUiLjTJBZos_cd9I5aUOhmuSaLW1uK6pp2rycxvPa_suaYnfo_98GlgyiBFvuoahAOaovpEZ3W3g68gPJ4-KiJlp-5zGqEUotoIh6yo4TqyUywb0zRdM-khxdOOqule8Vm9DiwDjZ-fiL5wbg%3D%3D&attredirects=0

If you buy a shotgun that left the factory with a pistol grip it is not considered a "shotgun", it is considered a "firearm". The reason is a shotgun's definition requires it to have a shoulder stock or be capable of being shoulder fired. So when the shotgun does not meet the definition of a shotgun then it becomes a "firearm". And because it is a "firearm" and not a shotgun there are no barrel length requirements, only an overall length requirement which is 26" or more. So if you buy a shotgun that had a pistol grip from the factory you can have any length barrel you want so long as the overall length is at least 26". There are opinion letters from the ATF stating a sample shotgun they were sent with a 17" barrel is perfectly legal because it was at least 26". I have also seen people get approval, without registering as an AOW, guns with a 12" barrel because the stock they used came far enough back to meet the 26" overall length. The ATF also adds to their opinion letter regarding this that if a person is caught with it concealed on their person it would meet the definition of an AOW and a person could be charged with illegal possession of a NFA item. I am really thinking a virgin AK receiver could be used to build a nice "firearm" using a Saiga 12 as a donor. Because the receiver is so long you could install a pistol AR buffer tube at the rear and end up with a ~12" barrel. And the best part is it would be completely legal so long as the overall length was 26". Imagine a Saiga 12 with a 12" barrel and a 20+ round magazine. You could probably use the buffer tube to carry extra ammo too. Another great thing about a "firearm" vs a "pistol" is you can attach a forward grip to a "firearm" but not to a "pistol". For example, this is NOT a NFA AOW: It is just a "firearm", not a shotgun, because it is 26" or more long. And you can legally add a forward grip.

It is free to transfer any NFA item that is not part of a trust. Mine will go to my grandkids if they want them. They are on Form 1's and all that has to be done is to complete a Form 5, tax exempt transfer. It does not cost anything to transfer NFA items to an heir. The way trusts are done now is about to change. There will be a CLEO signoff requirement, photos as well as fingerprints and backgrounds done on all trustees. We don't have much longer before it goes into effect. The only advantage a trust has right now is time. You can do an electronic submission of a trust and it will take ~90 to complete. But when the new change goes into effect you will no longer be able to submit electronically because of the background checks.

Initially, which has been a very long time ago in Tennessee, they recorded the firearm you used to qualify. I cannot remember if you were required to carry that gun or not but now they do not record the firearm used so they have no way of knowing what gun you qualified with. I have heard of some instructors keeping targets as "proof" of you ability but it is not a requirement either. My wife was able to bring her target home. There are minimum training standards and it seems as though a lot of instructors are going well beyond the minimum. Mine was extremely bare bones while I have talked to others who had all kinds of "tactical" scenarios as well as stuff they just plain didn't need. It was almost like the instructors picked something they were really good at and had the class do the same so the instructor could show off.

"Duck Dynasty" launches its own line of guns
Dolomite_supafly replied to greenego's topic in Long Guns
Isn't it funny how the love of money is supposedly the root of all evil yet there seems to be a lot of self proclaimed religious people who are trying their hardest to get as much of it as they can. Why would they try so hard to get it if they did not have a love for it? And they do this even though they have been warned their greed will bring ruin to their households. Get up at 5am any day of the week and you can see what I am talking about. "Religious" leaders preying on the misfortune of others to, no doubt, get rich. There is even a recent reality show where a religious leader is flaunting his wealth and possessions. Are they not worried about the moths, vermin or thieves? -
I kept mine 22lr. There definitely a lot more bolt thrust. I say go for it but I would not fire it once. It may survive once or 100 times but I would bet it would eventually fail. If you can find a Remington 580, 581, 591 they are much better. They were rumor to be for center fire but were chambered in rimfires out of fear it would outsell the more popular models. They have 6 locking lugs at the rear which makes it perfect got pistol calibers. People have converted them to several high pressure cartridges. I know I am planning 32 or 380 ACP for mind. It will handle that plus a lot more
-
You are going to exceed the safe pressures in the cricket. If I could find a blank with the correct bore I might make one in 25 ACP. No need to reline the factory barrel. Inside the front stock screw hole is a set screw. Loosen it and the factory barrel slides right out. Take the replacement barrel and lathe the OD to match the factory barrel. Chamber and you are done. This is how I made a barrel for mine using a GM blank.

You can shorten and do a crown without removing the barrel. You MUST remove the barrel to thread it.

Can you believe the state of CT gun owners?
Dolomite_supafly replied to serbu50's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
It will reach our state eventually. We already see tons of liberals influencing our state. At some point we will see the tide turn enough that our guns will be seriously threatened. We have way too many who want something for nothing for our state to not become a liberal stronghold. Stand in Walmart or any other major grocery store after the first of the month and watch the EBT cards fly. And every single one of those will vote democrat as long as they continue to get their cupcakes, coffee, sirloins and lobsters tail for free. And along with those votes for free food comes votes against our guns. I have said it 90% of gun owners would turn their guns in. 7% would hide their guns away and 3% would actively fight. Problem is the 90% would readily rat out the other 10%. People might think I am awful but all those "assistance" or "benefit" programs should go away. And if they can't feed their children then they should do the right thing and turn them over to someone who can. I can guarantee that 90% of the items I see getting bought are not for the kids and if they are then the parents should not be parents. Using most of the EBT money for what I have seen just tells me they are as not bad off as they make people think. I know if I was in dire need, and I have been, I would not waste money on lobster because that is a lot of beans and rice. There should be a lifetime limit on assistance because everyone hits hard times from time to time. Make the lifetime limit 3 years. If you choose to use it from 18-21 then you are done for life. If at age 30 you hit hard times and your benefits have already been used you better have family or friends to take care of you. If you don't then you either starve or work. Too many people think they are too good to work, no wonder when the government is giving them everything. Hunger can be a powerful motivator and I bet those who are starving would gladly work for a few hamburgers a day. I bet people in the states that have constitutional carry are saying that they can't believe people in Tennessee don't stand up and willingly pay for their right to carry a firearm. -
If anything it would require the gas port to be enlarged providing the gas block isn't past the 16" mark.

The Stevens 200 is actually a better receiver. It doesn't get all the human's fluff and buff before ti leaves the factory so it is very consistent. I prefer the 200's over Savage.
-
I happened upon these and they are my next big purchase. http://mdttac.com/mdt-lss-chassis-for-savage.html I will mill the bottom of the action for the magazine. I will add a folding stock and have a nice tidy package capable of reaching out.
-
If the action is three digits like 110, 112, 114, etc then it is a long action regardless of caliber. If it only has two digits like 10, 11, 12, 14 then it is a short action. And with short actions there are two versions, a 4.275" spacing and a 4.4" spacing. The easiest way to tell is if it has a cocking indicator at the rear of the bolt. Another way is if the bolt release is on the front of the trigger guard vs on the side. And some 4.4" actions do have the release on the side. And finally if the action has a removable magazine then it is a 4.4" action unless the magazine setup is aftermarket. I will caution to stay away from guns with accustocks if you plan on building the gun. They are fine from the factory but present some unique challenges for a builder. You might try pawn shops because I have found short action rifles for around $200 and long actions for under $300. I will say that if you are working up a gun for accuracy I would try to find actions that have a round back receiver. A decade ago Savage changed owners and quite warrantying any previous versions which had the square backs. I will also say that the round backs tend to be more square and more consistent as far as dimensions go. And finally, DO NOT go with a Axis or Edge no matter how good the price is. They shoot well and are decent guns from the factory but there is ZERO aftermarket support for them. Jim at Northland sells stripped actions as well as everything to build them up to complete guns. Chrome lining in a barrel isn't like chrome lining on a bumper. I have personally never seen a barrel have the lining chip out. To properly thread a barrel it must be removed from the receiver anyways.

I had a friend who told me about a guy who had just gotten out of the military that was in a really rough spot. I told my friend to give him my number. Well a day or two later he came out. I handed him some tools and pointed to a small patch of trees, brush and other stuff on our land. He and my son cleared that patch of land in less than two hours and when it was done I handed the guy $200 and ordered food for his family for the night. I talked to my friend later on and he said that $200 made a huge difference and that the guy in need was back on his feet. The $200 was enough to get the gas he needed to get to work and to feed his family until his first paycheck came in. I have zero problems helping out people but I never give to people who ask for it and I also try to figure out some way for them to work for it. Helps them keep some of their dignity if they think they had to work for it. It also weeds out those who don't really need it. We have paid for people's groceries who are in front of us in line. When I stop in at McDonalds in the bad part of town I often buy extra meals for the homeless that are sitting in there to stay out of the weather. I prefer to help people out directly than give to a charity but for my entire time in the military I gave to AER after they helped us out with their food locker. It is awful to think that those who choose to defend the country have to receive food stamps and other aid just to survive on their active duty pay. We received WIC and was so happy to get it even though back then it wasn't like today. If anything being in the military should be one of the top paid professions in our country but sadly it is not.

Thanks. I am really trying to decide whether to do a R700 build or use one of my Savages.
-
I am wondering if someone might measure the length of a R700 short action receiver. I am needing from the front of the receiver to the rear tang., not including the recoil lug. Thanks

+1 I ask people all the time what they are doing on my road and if it sounds sketchy I ask if they have an ID. There is no law that says I cannot ask but I cannot force them to produce an ID. They can tell me to F'off too but the whole point of me asking is so they know someone is aware of their presence.
-
+1 People are awful but dogs are only awful after people have made them that way.

Funny how a modern, futuristic gun is built using a old WWII submachine as its base. That would be a Sterling pattern SMG that the British, and some allies, used during WWII.
