Norfolk had a fake police department
Dolomite_supafly replied to Chucktshoes's topic in General Chat
I suspect there will be a lot coming out about the 1033 program as well. I looked up my county and several sheriff's ago took possession of a BUNCH of machine guns. In talking with some officers they have never seen or heard of all those guns. -
The Oath Keepers believe, as I do, that when you take an oath to protect the Constitution you take it seriously and try to uphold that oath the best way we know how. For me taking that oath is a lifetime commitment meaning I will defend this country with my life if need be from all enemies, not just the foreign ones. So many have forgotten the enormous responsibility they committed to when they raised their right hand to take that oath.

I was in Rita/Katrina providing security for government employees and equipment. And we started to have to ride with the electricians because people would shoot them as they tried to restore power. I can only presume the shooters were doing it so they could continue to loot. I was at Ford park outside of Houston at one point and we would take fire from the local highway every couple of days. We could see the car but we could never get them. When I was working at Jackson Square in NO we would hear gun fire almost every night and not just a round or two but what sounded like MAJOR gun fights. I have no doubt that there are people who are in Houston being shot at.

I have actually had people come onto family property and demand we give them a certain tree that they say belongs to them. Seems there great, great uncle on their mother's side told them when they were a child, 50+ years ago, they could have that tree when he died and now they are here to collect since he has passed. A lot of people these days have ZERO respect for anything they did not pay for or put effort into. If I borrow something it goes back in as good a shape or it is replaced. I have lent out a bunch of stuff over the years and you would not believe how people treat your stuff. Often comes back way worse or they get upset that you won't just let them keep it. Lent a quad rail out last year, it came back with two cross threaded screw holes and a few screws missing. He wanted to borrow it for a "week or two" but it took over 6 months to get it back.

Be careful about shooting those, definitely nothing "high brass". They were actually recalled at one point because the bolt lugs will shear off sending the bolt into the shooter's face. Yours may or may not be part of the serial number range.
-
Some seem to have a two digit and some have a four digit but all the "good" ones have a year marked at the end of the serial number. My 201 Mini Draco has a four digit year while all my 2014, 2015 and 2016 AKM and standard Dracos have a two digit year at the end of the serial number.

Right after we moved here from Alabama we had someone do several drive by shootings at the house we were renting. We tried to figure it out but the only thing we could come up with was our plates. We still had Alabama tags and someone was probably pissed Alabama beat them.

The best "budget" AK is a current production WASR. If the serial number on the trunion doesn't end with a four digit year, walk away. I have bought about 10 Romanian guns in the last 5 years and have had one that needed to go back for a canted trunion. They rest have zeroes perfectly with the front sight pretty much centered. WASRs are 100% combloc made. Century just mills out the magwell and swap in 922r compliance parts. It had a hammer forged, chrome lined bore. Battle Las Vegas, who rents machine guns, has said WASR barrels last longer than any other barrel. They say the bullets are still not keyholing at 90K rounds. The drawback to a WASR is the muzzle threads are rarely concentric which makes using a silencer problematic. No soft carrier issues either, like the RAS. All AKM/AK47 furniture fit. I wish the current production WASRs were named something else. They are fighting the problems of the junk WASRs from a decade ago. Had they named it something else it would be the best selling AK because current production quality is as high as any other AK under $1,000, for 1/3 less. But no matter what AK you end up with NEVER use a Tapco hammer. They contribute to premature wear on the tail of the bolt carrier, especially if soft. You can reprofile them and it helps but they are too hard and can damage the bolt carrier. Most combloc hammers are soft so they get damaged before the more expensive bolt carrier.

I don't but not because of fears of being broken into. I don't because people are assholes and they will key your car up one side and down the other for having a bumper sticker they don't like.

There are other guns with a lot less problems. You might get a good one and it will last awhile or you might get one that will fall apart of blow up on the first round. Google RAS47 cast trunion to see the destruction. They have soft trunion, soft carriers and soft bolts. Honestly, I have yet to find an American made or built AK that does not have some sort of problem. The ONLY reason to have an American made AK is if you are going to run a silencer, that is it. The ComBlock countries have been building and perfecting the AK for what 70 years now and an American company can come along and do better after a couple of years, I think not. We are great at a lot of things but AKs are not one of them things. If you are ever in the Knoxville area you are more than welcome to come and handle any of my AKs before you buy.

We wound up getting a Stoeger M3000 inertia driven shotgun, it is basically a budget Benelli without all the fluff. It is 12 gauge but it really has very little recoil. My VEPR 12 really pounds you in comparison.
-
I tend to be frugal so I check prices and their price was within $30 and for that I will pay extra and walk out with it.
-
But honestly outside of the payment snafu the service was great. The kid behind the counter helped us out a lot and took it like a champ as we were trying on half the shotgun rack. And the price wasn't too awful bad either.

Going to ruffle some feathers
Dolomite_supafly replied to Dolomite_supafly's topic in Competitive Shooting Sports
Stoeger M3000 inertia driven in 12 gauge. I shot it and it really does not kick much at all. My VEPR seems to pound me compared to the Stoeger. It has sold me on the system. -
What to do with your eclipse glasses (seriously)
Dolomite_supafly replied to monkeylizard's topic in General Chat
If they block the sun I wonder how they would work for welding, specifically TIG. -
So my wife is going to start using a 12 gauge for skeet/trap shooting. She bought herself a nice semi auto to replace her pump .410. We are going to the range this weekend to give it a try The last time my wife went they gave her a hard time for using a .410. If they only knew the skill needed to bust clays with a .410. She shoots 20+ consistently with her .410 so with her being able to sling more lead with a 12 gauge I think she will do better even better But that is not the real reason they are going to get their feathers ruffled. The real reason is I will be shooting skeet next to my wife using my VEPR 12. I cannot wait to see the faces or hear the comments from those shooting a more traditional shotgun.

So today my wife and I found ourselves at Bass Pro walking around. She found a shotgun she wanted so she decided to get it. She filled out the background and we went to eat while waiting for the background to came back. After eating we left the restaurant and she had to go to the restrooms so went to the gun counter to pay. I asked if she passed and the clerk said she passed the background without a problem. I pulled out my wallet to pay and the clerk said that I could not pay for it. I asked why and he said it was illegal for me to pay for HER gun. I tried to explain that anyone can pay as long as the background came back and he held up a mousepad saying straw purchases will get you 10 years. I laughed and about that time my wife walked up so I walked away. While waiting on her I decided that I would speak to a store manager just as a FYI. I explained what had happened and he was adamant that I could not pay, even with cash, and that doing so was a straw purchase. Even if the background is already done it is still a straw purchase according to him if I pay for someone else. I tried to explain that once the background is done anyone can pay and he said no because their "expert" has said it constitutes a straw purchase if someone else pays. I asked about buying it as a gift and he said doing a background for someone else is perfectly legal as long as the person doing the background pays. At that point he offered to let me do the background for my wife's gun if I wanted to pay instead of her. Seems like they have things flipped. I can't pay because it is an illegal straw purchase if I pay but letting me do a background for someone else isn't illegal as long as I am the one who pays for the gun.

I have a friend who has a 5 twist. Says it shoots everything great. An 8 twist stabilizes my 265 easily at subsonic velocities.

The real question is how do you get $1 off a gallon of gas? And how often can you get that $1 off?
-
Seems they have pretty much dried up around here despite the fact no one has hunted the woods where I live in close to two decades. I can remember when I could sit on my porch and count a dozen, or more, squirrels running around. Now I will go days without seeing a single squirrel despite having plenty of nut trees around. They would congregate in the largest tree but that tree hasn't had a single squirrel this year.

.45 ACP Mosin Nagant conversion
Dolomite_supafly replied to Quavodus's topic in Curio, Relics and Black Powder
Rhineland arms used to make a 45 ACP conversion for Mausers. It was cheap too, something like $200 for everything including the barrel. Here you go, $160 and that includes the magazine well to accept 1911 magazines. http://www.troupsystems.com/mauser45kits.htm -
You can always turn it down, you cannot always turn it up. $100 to double your capabilities is a deal. It also depends on what you will be welding. If all you do is thinner material a 230 is not NEEDED. But if you are going to do any heavier gauge stuff a 110V may not work well. Also look at the duty cycle. You want a welder that can handle what you are doing without taking cooling breaks. If you are going to be using it to fix things, versus building things, you could get away with a lower duty cycle. If you get a high voltage welder you shouldn't have a duty cycle problem at the lower settings. The first welder I used was a cheap 230V model. If I turned it up past anything beyond 100 amps it would shut off after 5 minutes and take at least 15 minutes to cool before you could turn it back on. I used box fans to extend the welding time some but it still turned itself off before I was done welding. I am far from an expert, plenty of people here with WAY more knowledge than I have about welding. I am still trying to figure things out myself. Personally I would buy a good AC/DC TIG/ARC machine in 230V. It isn't as simple as a MIG but you can weld EVERYTHING with a AC/DC TIG/ARC welder. You can weld aluminum and steel. Now if all you are going to weld is steel and ease of use is important it is hard to beat a 230V MIG on gas. With it you can pretty much weld anything you would need to as a home user.

You ain't kidding. I had gloves and a t-shirt on the first day I spent TIG welding. My skin was peeling a few days later from the burn. Now I make sure I have a long sleeve on when running AC.
