  1. OK, so just to be clear, if I wanted to purchase a handgun from someone inside the state of Tennessee, they can ship it directly to me without going through an FFL? The seller would have to use UPS overnight by shipping it from an official UPS drop point?
  2. I think your topic is interesting, but like others have said, it will be a massive undertaking to adequately address such a broad and complex topic. I think another perspective that would be interesting and still go towards your point would be to discuss the ethical obligations that lawmakers and policymakers have in supporting the 2nd Amendment, especially in the wake of the recent Supreme Court rulings on it. You could also approach it as a project discussing how gun owners have an ethical obligation to exercise their 2nd Amendment rights responsibly. I think that if you try to make your original argument, you are going to find yourself in a situation where you will have to address every single "what if" regarding people who many believe should not own guns (e.g. felons, mentally ill, minors, etc.). Just my 2 cents worth coming from the perspective of a college instructor.
  3. I swapped out the backstrap on my Walther PPS for the larger one and I thought it made all the difference in the feel of the pistol.
  4. Laser Max makes some nice lasers. Take a look at the Uni-Max laser. I have one and like it a lot. Much more compact than most rail mounted lasers out there, and their customer service is very good as well. LaserMax > Home
  5. Does anyone know where I can pick up the electrical kit for the Liberty brand safes somewhere around Knoxville? Liberty won't ship direct and the closest dealer is about 75 miles from me. I checked at Gander Mtn since they carry Liberty, but no luck.
  6. Thanks for the offer; that is very generous. I ended up just paying a fellow to move it. I've been running back and forth to Kentucky so between that and the crappy weather, I decided to just bite the bullet and get it delivered. Incidentally, I never did find any place in Knoxville that rents the type of dolly I was looking for. Knox Tenn shows them on their site, but when I spoke to them, they said they don't have them. I called a couple of other places with no luck. Everyone has the regular appliance dollies, which I am sure would work as long as they can take the weight. I'm certain you would need more than one person to move it safely with one of those. The guy who delivered it just used a pallet jack.
  7. I just picked up a Liberty from Gander Mountain, but it's not built from titanium reinforced armor plate and weighs in at less than 12 tons, so I suspect there will be those out there who will call my "residential security container" a quaint way to present my firearms to thieves for their enjoyment.
  8. I would second just building one. There's no better way to understand how the rifle works than to build it yourself. You can build a lower with very little effort or special tools. Just buy a stripped lower, get a complete parts kit, and slap that puppy together. If you don't feel comfortable with building the upper, just buy one preassembled. It really isn't that difficult to build a lower and there's really no better way to learn the function of the rifle. However, to the original question, I personally would just pick the best value for the money. Standard AR-15 rifles are pretty much the same out of the box and that will free up the cash to do any customization you decide to do after you've had the rifle a while. It would suck to buy a top-of-the-line rifle and decide to swap out parts when you could have gotten a standard version for several Benjamins less and used that cash to get what you want. I really like Rock River rifles. They tend to be well-built and perform well out of the box. Stag Arms also makes some decent rifles for the price. Finally, although they have a hit-or-miss reputation, Century Arms had some A2 rifles that used mil-spec Colt parts. I had one for a while and it worked flawlessly.
  9. In that price range, I personally would go with a Springfield as the first choice, and a Kimber as a close second choice... unless, of course, you happened across a Colt at that price and they do pop up from time to time. There are several models made by Springfield and Kimber in that price range that have various levels of customization depending on what you want to do with it. It's also pretty easy to find drop-in aftermarket parts for the Springfields if that's an important feature for you.

    pocket gun

I've thought about getting one myself. Folks who have them seem to like them, which I suspect is why you don't see used ones for sale all that often (at least in my experience). For those who doubt the lethality of them, when I was in the police academy they showed a film where a police officer was shot and killed by a single shot from a NAA in .22LR. The shooter survived 5 hits from the officer's .357 mag revolver. One-in-a-million shot for sure, but the bullet missed the body armor and ended up severing the aorta. Never doubt the potential of a little pocket gun like the NAA. Sent from my SPH-M900 using Tapatalk
  11. Nope, that holster is designed to be worn the way he wore it. http://www.usgalco.com/Catalog/normal/Jak-Slide.jpg

  13. True enough. I get so annoyed that here I almost have a PhD in criminology and she wants to argue with data I show and counter it with her own opinion as if it has any validity. She really lives in her own reality sometimes. She's not insane, just a liberal. She even convinces herself that Obummer isn't inept, but is so brilliant that we can't understand why he makes the decisions he does. Yeah... sure...
  14. I did for a while, but kind of got out of it. I always wanted to get all of the silver eagle dollars, but with the price of silver through the roof, I sold the few I had and I'll start back up when they go back down.
  15. I need to move a 600 pound gun safe and I'm trying to locate some place that rents a big appliance dolly with the extra set of wheels that kick out to help carry the load. Anyone know of a place in fabulous Knox Vegas that rents those?
  16. No, I don't think the OP ever said, but I'd like to hear what kind of safe was being used.
  17. Classic example of someone not keeping tabs on the condition of their carry rig. You think this wouldn't have happened had it not been a Glock? How about all the folks who carry DAO handguns and revolvers after doing a high-speed trigger job? Let's face it, it isn't the gun's fault. Incidentally, I don't care for the majority Galco leather because it is too thin and soft (although it looks darn nice). I actually started making my holsters because the Galco holster I paid almost $100 for was so floppy after a couple of months that I couldn't use it anymore. In all fairness, consider how many millions of Galco slide holsters are out there and how this is the first time we've heard of such an incident. I hardly think this is any more than a freak combination of events and a good reminder to check your carry rig regularly.
  18. I think I'd need some WD-40 in there too if I go that route.
  19. Yup. This has been one of the most recent justifications for increased gun control and it was the BATF that was helping the problem along. No wonder Obummer didn't want to discuss it much at the time.
  20. The Glock does have a safety. In fact, it has three of them. Comparing them to a 1911 that is cocked is like comparing a parked car with no key in the ignition to a stock car on the starting line waiting for the green flag. The only way one can "accidentally" discharge a Glock is by pulling the trigger. This is no different than a revolver, and plenty of folks have those down to a 5 pound trigger. The Glock also has the trigger bar that prevents the trigger from being moved to the rear unless the finger is on the trigger and depresses the bar. Some departments did see an increase of AD/NDs, but it was found this was a training issue and not a firearm safety issue. When they retrained their officers to keep their finger off the trigger unless they were ready to fire, this problem went away. Training issues are not unique to Glocks. I recall an officer in central Kentucky who shot an unarmed man in the head when he tried to decock his Beretta 92FS by lowering the cocked hammer with his thumb. Yes, the Beretta has a decocking lever built into the safety, and no, there is no reason why the officer should have even thumbed back the hammer on his Beretta. He did it anyhow and it was determined to be a training issue after he transitioned from a revolver to semi-auto pistol And no... most responsible gun owners don't just "stuff" their pistol in the waistband without a holster. That's how ADs/NDs happen and how firearms fall free. There's a reason people spend good money on a holster. We want the pistol to be securely and safely carried.

  22. Thanks for those ideas. I was also sitting here thinking about it and I may try to widen the hole a lot, fit a steel nut into the hole, and secure that with either JB Weld or epoxy.
  23. I received a nice spotting scope from a buddy of mine and I am trying to figure out how to fix it. It has an aluminum body and is attached to the mounting bracket with a threaded knob that screws into a threaded hole in the body of the scope. Problem is, the threaded hole is totally stripped out (big shocker when you build your scope to utilize a steel screw in a soft aluminum hole, but I digress). Basically, when I try to screw the knob into the hole, there's nothing left for the screw to grab onto. Any ideas on how I can fix this?
  24. I got it from their website. Spoolie got it cheaper than I did, so you probably want to start there. Not sure why I had a brain fart and didn't start on eBay.
  25. I've considered one of these, mostly because of the capacity. I just can't bring myself to pay that kind of cash for it. I wish someone would make a pistol in .22LR that held 30 rounds. THAT I would buy.
