Thinking about a Versipack
East_TN_Patriot replied to peejman's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
I have the Jumbo and it carries a water bottle, my pistol, plenty of spare ammo, and whatever I would need for a day out and about. If I need more stuff than that, I go with a regular backpack. Coming from a guy with an 8 week old, I can safely say that a Jumbo Versapack is not large enough to serve as a diaper bag unless you plan on really downsizing what you carry. I think you could probably stash a couple of spare diapers, a small pack of wipes, and some basic baby essentials, but that's about it. Good enough for a quick trip out and about, but not for a long day. -
^^^^ This. Typically, once you have signed that plea deal, you are poop outa luck. By agreeing to the plea, you are acknowledging that you have read, understand, and will abide by the conditions of the plea deal. This goes along with earlier post "play stupid games, win stupid prizes" comment. If you agreed to the deal without fully reading and understanding it, you win the prize. Unless you can prove that the lifetime surrendering of the permit was NOT clearly laid out by the prosecutor prior to the plea deal, you really have no leg to stand on.

Are you serious??? Do you really think that a simple assault is an indicator that someone would be involved in a gun crime? Especially a juvenile charge? How many of us have been involved in some sort of physical altercation sometime in our lives? Please tell me you are critiquing bureaucratic BS and our over-litigious society and not suggesting simple assault is a predictor of violent gun crime.

Is the Mosin Nagant really all that and a bag of chips?

Nothing particularly special about my 91/30, but here are the pics: -
Spanish Mauser FR-8

Well, now wait a minute... sounds like someone needs to share some pics. -
Well, I just received a LaserMax UniMax-Micro rail mounted laser that I have installed on my Walther PPS 9mm. So far, I have to say that I am extremely impressed with the quality and design of the laser. The unit came packaged in a snap-closure clamshell pack with minimal extra wasted packaging. This is a minor detail, but I can't stand those regular clamshell packs that take a blowtorch, chainsaw, and Kevlar gloves to get into without slicing off a finger. The instructions were in color and more than adequate for properly setting up, installing, and adjusting the laser sight. The package also included a battery and an allen wrench. The laser mounts to the accessory rail of compact pistols such as my PPS and similar sized carry guns. The laser mounts using a screw that is easy to tighten down. The Micro has a small footprint that does not extend too far down or to the sides of the frame. The front of the laser also fits flush with the front of my pistol. The unit is far enough back on the frame that it can easily be activated with my trigger finger or finger from my support hand. Overall, the fit is darn near perfect for my PPS. It is also very lightweight so I don't notice any change in the balance or feel of the handgun. Features of the laser are excellent as well. It is a basic red dot laser sight, but it is extremely bright even in normal indoor light. I have not taken it outside in daylight to see how it does, but I expect it to be on par with other red lasers. The laser is activated by an ambidexterous touch switch; one push on either side turns it on and an additional push on either side turns it off. It also has a feature that automatically turns off the laser after 10 minutes in case it is accidentally left on. The battery is kept in place by a sliding metal door that is easy to change without tools. Adjustment for windage and elevation is easy using the provided allen wrench. The shell of the unit is a polymer of some sort that appears to be durable and solid. The laser does not feel cheaply made or flimsy. The laser itself appears to be housed in a rubber-like material to help absorb shock, which one would expect for a quality laser sight. The screw that is used is metal and utilizes a metal nut on the side to tighten the laser. This is important so you don't have to worry about stripping out any threads in the laser unit. The laser is mounted tightly to the rail and I see no evidence that the screwholes are especially weak. Specs per their website are as follows: For: Virtually anything with a Picatinny rail Weight: 0.43 ounces Wavelength: 650nm (red) Power Output: 5mW Battery Type: 1/3N Lithium (1) Battery Life: Over 5 hours Accuracy: User adjustable for windage & elevation I have not taken the pistol to the range yet, but once I do, a range report will follow.

Spanish Mauser FR-8

And if you want to get rid of one, keep me in mind. I've missed that rifle ever since I had to sell it. -

I've got quite a wait ahead. I just mailed my paperwork off this week. -

Yeah, I'm reading where some versions of the M44 are on their final run into the country. I was kind of shocked at how many of the old surplus handguns have jumped up in price as well. Wish I'd gotten in on the C&R thing sooner. -
Unfortunately, you may be right.

Um... no. Capitalism assumes that the means of production and profits are held by private interests. Stalin implemented a socialist economy in the Soviet Union under the belief, based on Marx's writings, that it was the necessary precondition for ushering true communism. Marx, and Stalin, were aware that communism was not something that could happen overnight, so they believed that the state had to play a role in forcing people to abandon the social attitudes and social values associated with a free-market economy until the masses realized the benefits of a communist society at which point they would adopt it without coercion or intervention from the state, at which point, the state would essentially dissolve and be replaced by a communal style of popular rule. All that said, you are correct. Religion has socialism/communism beat. This site lists death tolls for religious vs. non-religious conflicts: Twentieth Century Atlas - Death Tolls and Megadeaths And this site summarizes the above data: Deaths over history: religious vs. nonreligous « Bookrate To be fair, comparisons are difficult at best for a couple of reasons. First, it's a little disingenuous to compare total death tolls from religious wars throughout recorded human history with political movements of the last 100 years (such as communism/socialism/Nazi atrocities/etc.). Second, there is no clear diving line between many religious wars and political wars. These designations regularly bleed over into each other.

I was looking around for some options for when C&R arrives and saw one of my old favorite rifles, the Spanish Mauser FR-8. I had one years ago and had to sell it when I got divorced. I paid $79 for it at the time and of the handful I found, they were listed for $250 and up. Man, I sure wish I had that old rifle again! Does anyone have one of these lying around?
-
This is correct. You also need an aftermarket barrel to shoot reloads because the factory barrel has an unsupported chamber that has led to ruptured cases. I have a Lone Wolf barrel and I am very happy with it.

After the Glock thumb safety thread and a couple of comments from people other than the OP regarding the direction the thread went in, I couldn't help but think to myself, "so what?" I really don't give a flip where my threads go once I start them. If people take it where I don't want to go, then I bow out and let people run with it. The only place where I care is in the Trading Post where people make unsolicited comments from people criticizing the item or the price being asked. Other than that, I figure a forum is about free expression of ideas within the rules of conduct. Am I the only person that feels this way?

At this point, I would be content to see the parking lot carry law pass just so I could keep my firearm locked in my car when I am parked on campus so I have it when driving to and from the university. Here I am a former cop and police firearms instructor, PhD student, part-time college instructor, have a carry permit, and somehow I can't even be trusted to keep it locked in my freaking car.

Mosin Nagant SBR
East_TN_Patriot replied to East_TN_Patriot's topic in Curio, Relics and Black Powder
When I happened across that vid for the SBR, I saw some others where people were showing off their "sporterized" Mosin Nagant rifles. One guy had to have put several hundred bucks into the thing to make it into a "sniper" version. I guess it's like taking a stock beater Remington 700 and building a super accurate rifle with it. I also saw a video of a guy who was hitting a steel plate at 1000 yards with his rifle after glass bedding the barrel. Pretty cool little rifle. -
The only aftermarket Glock mag I have fooled with is an Asian military import that will hold 31 rounds. The only reason I got that over the Glock factory super high-cap was that it was $10. It's a little rough on the inside, but has functioned OK so far. I'll shoot a few more rounds through it before I would bet my life on it. You may want to take a look at one of those. CDNN usually keeps them in stock.

This is true. Some feel better knowing that in a struggle over their duty gun, they can drop the mag and render the firearm inoperable in case the bad guy gets possession of it. I personally preferred not having it because I didn't like the idea of not having the ability to get one shot off in case the mag was bumped loose or I hadn't seated it fully for some reason. See, this would be an example of people appreciating the design characteristics and limitations of their chosen firearm.

REALLY??? Do you really propose to know what I do and don't understand about firearms??? Well, after 10 years of police experience (that includes training as a firearms instructor) carrying a firearm every day of my career, never with a safety engaged if installed, or carrying Glocks as an off-duty gun, I never had a single AD/ND. Why? Because I religiously practice safe firearms handling, inspect my equipment, and respect the design limitations of my firearms INCLUDING A THUMB SAFETY that is NOT a substitute for properly handling, storing, and carrying your firearm. If you are too irresponsible or stupid to carry a striker fired weapon without a thumb safety, then you probably shouldn't be carrying one at all. The simple fact of the matter is that a Glock can't be fired unless the person puts their finger or some other foreign object in the trigger guard and presses the trigger to the rear. I've seen and know of cases where people had all sorts of AD/NDs with firearms that had any manner of safety devices installed. It all boils down to personal responsibility. If you think a dummy switch relieves you of any portion of that responsibility, you need to rethink your carry strategy. It seems it is you that can't appreciate the design limitations of a firearm and want to manipulate the design because you aren't comfortable enough with your skills to carry a Glock. I don't pretend a safety is a magical feature that will keep me from accidentally killing or injuring someone.

Taurus PT740 Slim named American Rifleman "Handgun Of The Year"
East_TN_Patriot replied to Grunt67's topic in Handguns
+1 and I'm not particularly a Taurus fan. What folks won't admit, is that had the NRA listed the Glock Gen 4 or some sort of big name 1911 variant as "gun of the year," they wouldn't be talking about how jacked up American Rifleman is or how much said company paid in advertising (yadda, yadda, yadda). I'll never understand how gun snobbery can render one a mindless zombie when it comes to accepting that a company can put out a high-quality firearm for less money. I guess that folks forget that the AR-15 platform, the 1911, the M14, M1 Garand, and many other highly regarded firearms out there were the cheapest guns the military could get their hands on. Like I said, I'll never understand the gun snobbery... -
Mosin Nagant SBR
East_TN_Patriot replied to East_TN_Patriot's topic in Curio, Relics and Black Powder
Those are pretty much my sentiments, although I wouldn't do that with a 91/30 myself (more out of practicality than any sort of admiration or general sense of sentimental longing for the old Soviet battle rifle). -
Employee pulls gun during Wal-Mart produce dispute

On the up side, at least the guy didn't shoot anyone. This is much less damaging to the image of CCW permit holders than if he'd flown totally off the handle and killed someone. -
Mosin Nagant SBR
East_TN_Patriot replied to East_TN_Patriot's topic in Curio, Relics and Black Powder
The guy says he had to get the $200 SBR. From the back story I read around the WWW, there was actually a strange variant of the Mosin Nagant that was used during the Russian Civil War called the obrez:
