  1. Paraphrasing is not wrong, as long as you cite the original source and don't take ownership of the ideas as your own. For instance, I could say: "According to Emile Durkhiem, crime is a normal and beneficial phenomenon in society. It gives societies the opportunity to clearly define, reinforce, and revise social norms and values. Without a clear definition of wrong, you can't have a clear definition is right." I totally paraphrased it and gave credit to the original author (who has been dead for over a century now). As far as plagiarism goes, you can also use brief quotes as long as you note them as such and give clear credit to the source. I would assume that meeting the standards of academic publishing would be more than sufficient for the purposes of copyright issues.
  2. Based on my limited experience on the law, I believe that the law does require a plaintiff to have some direct interest in the material to claim damages. This is yet another example of why we need a "loser pays" legal system.
  3. One of my Facebook friends asked me what I think of Palin. Here is my response: Even a stopped clock is right twice per day. Palin got it right because she knew just enough to keep from being blatantly incorrect, and in my mind her lack of articulation on the topic is evidence. Either way, as I alluded to above, there are plenty of other issues to worry about regarding Palin without worrying about her thoughts on Paul Revere.
  4. ^^^ This. Also, many people assume that felons are inherently evil people and that they will always be evil people. That simply isn't the case. Many times, the convicted felon is just like the rest of us, but they got caught and most likely didn't have the money to obtain a good defense attorney. Most people have committed a felony at some point in their life whether they realize it or not, whether they got caught or not. There are so many felony crimes out there, it isn't too difficult to stumble into one during your life.
  5. Nope. This one is most certainly a refurbished one based on you comment. I can tell by the pics that the receiver and bolt are matte black and some of the paint is wearing off the bolt handle. Wood is pretty scratched up as well, especially for a refurbished rifle. I think you folks saved me from spending too much money on a mediocre rifle. Thanks to all!
  6. I am going to take a look at a Russian SKS later today. They are asking $395 for it. What should I look for in it for this price point? Any advice?

  8. Do you actually think it's appropriate to call anyone who consumes alcohol in any amount a "drunk" or do you just strive to insult people for entertainment value? Thanks for wasting 10 seconds of my time with your totally mindless input
  9. That's a tough one because virtually all of the guns I have owned, with the exceptions of the ones I mentioned in the worst gun thread, have all been excellent. I think one of my favorites I have ever owned is my Walther PPS, but I really love all of the ones in my current collection.
  10. Perhaps. It would have to be one impressive shotgun for that kind of price as far as I am concerned. I love Kel Tec's designs, but this one I'm gonna have to put my hands on before I even remotely consider plopping down that kind of cash. The capacity is a big selling feature for sure, but damn... If the fit, finish, and function are there, I would consider it. My hope is that with an MSRP of $800 it will be possible to get one below that. If it was $500, I'd be in for sure. I might even go $600 - maybe. I guess time will tell for me. It's like their SU-16. Every time I get close to buying one, I realize I can get an AR15 carbine for the same price and have a much better rifle (at least in my opinion). The RFB looks totally bad to the bone. I would love to have one, but at $1800 that will never happen, first because I don't forsee ever having that kind of cash to plop down on a single rifle, and second, I can get a really nice M1 SOCOM for several hundred dollars less. I have the Sub 2000 and love it. It's a fantastic design; simple, rugged, compact, innovative... and reasonably priced. A bargain, in fact. I think the price is so reasonable, I gladly accept the rough machining and flaws in the polymer parts. For the kind of cash we're talking on the KSG, I would expect a practically flawless firearm.
  11. Take a look at this website. They should have everything you need. Mosin Nagant Rifle Parts : Buymilsurp.com, Your source for military surplus.
  12. My understanding is that the street price is going to be well over $500 (the number $800 sticks in my mind at the moment). I can't imagine many people spending that kind of cash on a pump shotgun.
  13. If you're happy and the other guy is happy, then it was a great deal.
  14. Can't say I've ever had the urge to point my laser at aircraft... not that I think it's a particularly good idea... but seems like they are making a mountain out of a molehill on this issue. Can you imagine the near impossibility of a laser being in a perfect line of sight of the pilot to hit their eye and cause such instant and intense eye damage that they couldn't land the plane? And all that with a little laser that loses it's power the further from the source it gets?
  15. I'll follow JeffsSig's lead and list mine in order of personal preference: Wood Micarta Carbon-fiber Rubber Plastic Aluminum or metal alloys I just don't think you can beat the look, feel, and grip of a nice set of checkered wood grips. The micarta are great for durability and grip, and have a nice aggressive look if that's what you are going for (this is a close second for me). Carbon fiber looks cool, but compared to the others, I prefer the wood or micarta. Rubber is a great utility grip but they tend to look cheap and don't hold up very well (I used them on my primary duty weapon because they are probably the best in the rain and are low-key for police carry). Plastic? Nah, not unless I have to or I can't find other grips for it. Aluminum grips look cool, but I don't like how they transfer the cold.

  17. I have a Bersa 380CC and I love that little pistol. I've owned all sorts of handguns including Sig, Glock, Smith & Wesson, Kahr, Walther, and Colt and that Bersa has been just as good as any, and better than some of the big names I have owned. It eats everything I've put through it and no hiccups or signs of unusual wear. Definitely well worth the money. The biggest complaint I have seen and have personally is the finish. My pistol is a matte black finish and it's not especially durable. I can't speak for the stainless, but I would assume it would be much better for a carry gun if you are concerned about that sort of thing. I just got a dummy gun for that Kimber and it seems like a great size for CCW. It's slim and compact for sure. It's a little bigger than a Sig P238 and feels good in my hand.
  18. I agree 99%. The other 1% is that it's not just prohibition of marijuana that's the problem. Prohibition of most other substances also fuels this problem. We need to stop waging "war" on Americans and seriously consider harm reduction strategies instead. We have created a social policy that has turned our communities into battlegrounds and force our peace officers to become soldiers in a war that can't be won. Until the public demand for drugs goes away, there will be people who are willing to risk all to provide the product. What a waste of manpower, money, resources, and lives!
  19. And that is really the key question. If there were a line of handguns on a table and the Hi Point was one of them, would that be the first one you'd go to on your way to the showdown? Nope. Not in a million years. If the choice was the Hi Point versus a rock, paper, scissors, stick, or slingshot, I'd pick the Hi Point. Personally, I think they are better than most people give them credit for, but there is a reason it's not the top selling gun in America for law enforcement and personal defense use. However, in light of the OP's sarcastic tone, I just happened across this post in another gun forum by a fellow whose avatar says "Ghetto Glock": Well, I'm just not sure what to say about that...
  20. Oh... you mean that it's essential because the majority of society fully knows that typically the only people who OC are cops? Huh... You mean undercover cops conceal because they know it's important to keep a low profile and bad guys know that cops open carry and would look for that? Huh... They conceal even if it compromises their tactical advantage should they need to use their firearm? Huh... Kind of puts a damper on the "cops open carry so everyone else should too" argument in my mind. We do clearly agree that OC is not always appropriate so the argument becomes one very similar to the caliber debate. One must do what they feel is in their best interest and choose the method that they feel most comfortable with given the situations they plan to encounter. I think that CCW is generally the best option, but many feel differently. I'll concede that perhaps my perception of society's acceptance of OC is incorrect, but like I said before, I think there is a legitimate reason why most agencies I am aware of prohibit officers from open-carry while off duty. It's kind of the "just cuz you can, doesn't mean you should" thing. You can technically go about your daily life wearing swimming trunks, no shirt, no shoes, and don't bathe, but based on social standards, it's probably not a good idea. You can wear your pants so low that your boxers hang out the back, but it doesn't mean you should. You can sling an AR-15 over your shoulder and walk to the Weigels, but it doesn't mean you should - and yes, I know that a holstered pistol is different than an AR-15. That's just my take on it. I'm not hostile to open-carry per se, but we do also agree that doing it for political purposes is not the smartest thing in the world for our cause. Heck, you can OC, I'll CC, and we'll meet at Starbucks for a cup of coffee.
  21. The only places in and near Knoxville I know of are a small range on Rifle Range Road, the range out at the Oak Ridge Sportsman Association, an indoor range at Coal Creek Armory, an indoor range at Frontier Firearms, an indoor range at Gunny's in Maryville (if they are still in business), and the Norris range (I have not had the opportunity to go there yet). None of these are free to use. There is a fellow trying to secure financing to open an indoor range in the I-75 exit 112 area, but that's down the line and pending whether he can prove to the bank that there would be suitable interest. I can't speak to the range Chuck Swan.
  22. YouTube - Tucson SWAT Shot U.S. Marine Over 60 Times in Front of Family‏ The more I read and see about this, the more I wonder about the legitimacy of this whole thing. No evidence of a crime found at the scene, changing stories from the agency, their approach to the home, all of it is just odd. According to some other reports, multiple search warrants were served that morning and virtually none of them turned up any evidence or arrests. Now the Sheriff says he may never release the documents? If the suspect is so dangerous that a SWAT team is needed, it makes no sense at all to come walking to the door with the siren blaring. That's just dumb. You stack up quietly, knock and announce, and then breach. WTF???
