  1. At my first police department, I earned the nickname "Magnet Ass" because I kept getting hit in traffic, most of the time while stopped. The best example was when I was driving a BRAND NEW police cruiser on it's first 24 hours on the road (it had 283 miles on it). I stopped on the side of the road to get out with a couple of drunks who were fighting. I was the only car on the straightest, widest, flattest, most well-lit stretch of road in the city. A drunk driver creamed the rear end of the car and caused several thousand dollars in damage. I'm driving a new car now and was almost hit in the McDonalds drive-thru. I'll give this new car a few more days before either someone hits me in traffic or leaves a nice big dent in the side from their car door or shopping cart.
  2. I used to comment on stories like these, but realized that people who post this type short-sighted commentary don't care what anyone has to say anyhow. That goes for most online venues, this forum included. People make up their mind and refuse to even remotely consider any viewpoint or information that runs counter to their beliefs. If you post data they don't agree with, the data is skewed, the source is biased, or it's just meaningless statistics. If you post data they agree with, they talk about it as if it's gospel and chastise any naysayers as dumb and incapable of understanding "facts" or "science." It's not worth the hassle.
  3. I like to shoot cans, bottles, and golf balls left on the berm at ORSA's plinking range. I think the distance to the berm is a little over 50 yds. I use a Ruger MKIII target model with a Volquartzen match trigger.
  4. Yeah, I think I'll probably part with it. Like I said, I have a few other good knives (Gerber ASEK, ESEE 4", ESEE Izula, a Mora military knife, a Gransfors camp axe, and a nice heavy machete). With my other blades, the Junglas just doesn't fill a gap I need to fill. I must admit, it's cool to hold that beast in your hand and it's sharp for sure.
  5. I got mine at Smoky Mountain Knife Works down in Sevierville. They carry the full line so you can see which size you want and pick the nicest specimen.
  6. My preference is to "bug in" if possible, but I have what I need to go mobile if necessary. I just don't see the advantage of heading to the hills over staying in a structure where all of your belongings are. I can't help but believe it would be much easier to defend your home than it would be to protect yourself, your family, and your gear while roaming through the wildnerness. Obviously, situations can always change and make this impossible, but I think the best chance for survival is to stay put, take full advantage of the shelter and supplies you have on hand, and try to organize with neighbors.
  7. It's a Gransfors Bruks. I think I have the small forest axe. Their products are hand forged and are extremely well made. The blade was literally sharp enough to shave hair and it holds an excellent edge. Wetterlings also makes some fantastic axes, but they tend to cost a bit more and I am not aware of any significant difference between the GB and the Wetterlings. I had a very knowledgeable fellow steer me to the GB over the Wetterlings and I couldn't be happier. http://www.gransfors.com/htm_eng/index.html http://www.wetterlings.se/the/index.php
  8. In a fit of hysteria, I bought a ESEE Junglas knife with sheath. They are a little tough to find for a reasonable price and I saw it and my lust got the better of me. I spent a decent chunk of change on it and I'm not really sure I'll ever use it for it's intended purpose. For those unfamiliar, this thing is a beast. It's kind of like a mini-machete more than it is a knife. I have a couple of nice survival knives, a machete, and a nice camp axe, so I don't know what gap this would fill for me now that I have it in hand. It's a nice set-up though, so I can't decide. So, what do you knife afficianados think? Should I keep it or sell it? http://www.eseeknives.com/junglas_machete.htm
  9. Is the Saiga basically a commercial version of the AK? Does it use AK mags?
  10. I had a Smith & Wesson 642 revolver bead blasted once upon a time. It basically took care of some pretty impressive imperfections that I created with a Dremel. As others have said, it won't completely do away with imperfections, but if you do some work to even out pits and major flaws it will do wonders to even out the surface and make those blemishes disappear.
  11. Definitely get the correct mag. The most likely problem based on what you are telling us is that the P228 mag isn't properly pushing up on the slide release, which is allowing the slide to go forward on an empty chamber. Typically the follower in the mag presses up on the mag release to lock the slide back on the last shot, so if you don't have the correct mag that's the most likely problem. I am pretty sure Mecgar is the OEM manufacturer for Sig. I recently purchased 3 of their 18 round high-capacity mags for the 226 9mm and they work as well as the 15 round factory mags.
  12. I had a PA Micro Dot for my AR and it was a fine optic. It held zero and seemed well built. I recently sold it after I got an Aimpoint PRO. In a way, it's comparing apples and oranges, but I made the switch due to the reputation that Aimpoint has and I have clear evidence that the Aimpoint is made to survive abuse. My feeling is to get the best you can afford and balance that with your needs and wants. I wanted an optic with a larger field of view and one that I knew was able to hold up to extreme use - just in case. I spent 10 years as a cop and who knows whether I'll return to the streets at some point. I don't know if the PA would hold up like an Aimpoint, but for my limited use, it did just fine for range use and some 3 Gun shooting.
  13. I can't think of anyone in my own personal experience who shoots less than a .223/5.56 in 3 Gun.
  14. I guess I would say MSNBC, but I'm not sure why anyone would want to buy stock in a liberal media outlet.
  15. Don't be fooled. Even the most basic web search reveals that Santorum has a mixed record on 2nd Amendment rights, has supported gun control legislation, and supported anti-gun politicians. He also has no respect for the 4th Amendment.
  16. The group is a fringe organization that does have some history of violence against law enforcement. Their most common crimes are related to not paying taxes and refusal to abide by laws they feel are illegal. I'm not under the impression that they are a significant threat to national security. I would think that the anarchists who you are seeing as part of the Occupy movement are the real threat. Sovereign Citizens generally want to be left alone. Anarchists are actively trying to collapse the system.
  17. Hmm.... It's great for Starbucks to respect rights that we believe in, but not for them to respect the rights of other groups as well. Isn't that just the American way?
  18. Powell is in Knox County. I've not heard either way whether the Sheriff is good about signing off or not.
  19. Well. I've decided to just give in to the coolness factor and I am filling out my Form 1. I can't decide which is a bigger hassle, getting prints/photos/CLEO signature or doing an NFA trust. I was originally under the impression that the trust would be pretty simple. After reading some info from NFA trust lawyers, they (obviously) warn people away from DIY trusts with plenty of explanations how the trusts done through Quicken are technically incorrect for the NFA requirements and thus put you in violation of the NFA. I surely can't justify spending $500 for a trust lawyer just to avoid pics/prints/CLEO signature. Any experienced folks have any insight?
  20. Interesting to see how folks don't have a problem broadcasting their political views, but get all wound up when someone with opposing views does the same. The owners of the Bistro have the right to do what they did. I wonder how many of you would do the same if Obama or Sarah Brady walked into a business you owned.
  21. Incidentally, the local news reports this same dealer was one of the victims of the gun thief. Sounds like this dealer needs to seriously rethink a few things.
  22. This coming from a person with a "safety-less" revolver in their profile pic...
  23. I always find it intriguing how media folks generally fail to get the opinions of criminologists when they look at these sorts of issues. I'm pretty certain a simple phone call or email to anyone at UT or even Gary Kleck at FSU would yield some good information.
  24. Correct. Active or retired LEOs are able to carry concealed in DC. They generally aren't allowed to carry in federal buildings. When entering, the LEO must declare the weapon and show credentials. They will let you check your weapon while you are there.
  25. All of our enemies use the AK platform because during the Cold War the former Soviet Union made them in massive quantities and gave them to their allies and/or provided them the ability to build them. They are cheap to make, easy to work on, and anyone who can pick one up can operate it. It's not particularly accurate in comparison to other military rifles and can't easily be adapted to other functions like the AR platform. There is a reason many of our allies use the AR platform and virtually all use the 5.56 cartridge. Even if the Chinese did invade, I wouldn't be worried about not having an AK because I'm confident it wouldn't be hard to get one off a dead body at some point. The 5.56 is the standard NATO round, it's stockpiled by our military and our allies, law enforcement agencies use it, and most gun owners do as well. There will likely be far more 5.56 ammo around in the early stages of a foreign invasion and will definitely be more around in the event of social collapse here.
