  1. I have a 19 month old, and I have already started talking to him about gun safety. I also keep all of my firearms locked up. Every firearm I own, with the exception of my primary home defense pistol, is locked in a gun safe. My HD pistol is locked in a small gun safe in my nightstand drawer. There is simply no excuse for this sort of tragedy, and a cop should know better.
  2. 1) Browning Hi Power - Legendary 9mm semi auto, one of the first specifically designed for the 9mm 2) CZ-75 - One of the first widely distributed "Wonder 9s" that first gave police and military the idea to replace wheel guns with a high capacity semi auto. 3) Glock 17 - Introduced the world to the polymer frame pistol
  3. I understand. I had a Kahr once as a back-up and off-duty gun. One day on vacation, I took it out of the holster to check it before leaving the hotel for the day and found the end of the guide rod sticking out of the slide. The end of the cheap plastic captured guide rod had broken off rendering the entire pistol useless. The pistol had less than 500 rounds through it. I traded it in on a Smith revolver and swore of Kahr for life.
  4. OS, you beat me to it. The Beretta is an aluminum alloy frame with a steel slide. If you're only going to have one, I'd go with the Glock 17. Here's why: 1) Mags and parts are plentiful and reasonably priced. 2) It's light enough for EDC if needed, but a large frame handgun gives you a better sight radius and larger ammo capacity. Accuracy is more than acceptable for distance shooting. 3) The platform is very durable and reliable with very few internal parts. It is a tried and true design that has proven itself by police, military, and civilian shooters all over the world. 4) It's easy to work on, requiring only a Glock tool, which is basically a single punch with a handle on it. Many of the internal parts are interchangeable between Glock models and require no fitting. 5) It's customizable, just like a 1911. 6) 9mm ammo is easy to get and reasonably priced. Regardless of what many people believe, the 9mm is more than suitable for self-defense. 7) In an EOTWAWKI scenario, parts and ammo will be much easier to find since 9mm is the NATO round and Glocks are one of the most common handgun platforms in the United States.
  5. I tried all of that. When I try to go into full moderation, I get an error saying I don't have the authority to access it. Same as when I try to mark it "sold" or when I try to edit the title. I tried all of that before I locked it.
  6. I have found that I am unable to edit the title in classifieds from "for sale" to "sold." When I try to do this, I get an error message. Is this a problem or the way the system is set up? I notice that some have marked their ads as "sold" hence my question. I can lock them and edit the main text of the ad, but that's all.
  7. http://www.policeone.com/Patrol-Video/articles/5930343-Video-Cops-expert-open-carry-response-goes-viral/ This "one man activist group" needs to do a wee bit more research on his case law as well. A Terry stop allows an officer to conduct a pat-down for weapons if he/she has reason to believe the person being detained is carrying a weapon. I think it's pretty safe to say that a person walking down the street with an MP5 clone strapped around your body constitutes reasonable suspicion a person is armed.
  8. I have no problem lowering the drinking age to 18. If you are old enough to vote, old enough to serve in the military, old enough to enter into a legally binding contract, and old enough to go to prison, then you are old enough to drink legally.
  9. Anyone see a good deal on a used Glock 17?
  10. But, but... That's not a $1000 Kimber or Springfield! It's made in the Phillippines. It's simply not possible!
  11. I think I'd rather listen to gunfire instead of a leaf blower. I too have had loud neighbors, and asshat neighbors. I had one in Florida wo got mad that I put a privacy fence around our backyard and started throwing her used cat litter and trash into my yard. I solved that by gathering it up and throwing it into her driveway after code enforcement wouldn't do anything (I guess throwing an old mattress and an old bicycle into your neighbor's yard while keeping an old refrigerator and water heater in your yard is perfectly legal in Lynn Haven, Florida). I finally sold the house and moved. I would suggest that the gunfire is more annoying because you already dislike the folks.
  12. OK. Then wouldn't it be better to just deal with the problem people directly and make a general statement clarifying the purpose of the feature instead of a blanket generic chastisement? Just a suggestion.
  13. Maybe we can just use and this point on... or might that be seen as a misuse of the emoticon feature?
  14. I agree that their handling of the situation was not professional. They should have sent an email to all customers who had a pending order to explain the situation and give them an option to cancel the order. I for one am very tired of lousy customer service from firearms manufacturers. DS Arms was absolutely the worst experience I have ever had, so between that saga and this response from RRA, there are now two companies I won't buy from. I have had some pretty sub-par service from Spikes Tactical, so I am really hesitant to buy from them again as well. There are simply too many decent quality AR manufacturers out there to put up with crappy and dishonest service.
  15. I suppose I am a guilty party in this, but I too must plead ignorance. For my part, I just saw it as a "like/dislike" feature kind of like Facebook. I did not see any detailed explanation and I try to pay attention to announcements. I did not see this as some sort of project that required deep critical analysis of someone's comments. It's a web forum for exchanging ideas and entertainment as much as it is a source for general information (information that is really nothing more than someone's opinions, however well-informed it may be). It's similar to the "subject matter expert" experiment - I'm under the impression that it's not really being actively pursued at this point although a small number of people still have the label. At the end of the day, we know nothing about why someone was chosen as a SME, why others were not given the designation, nor does it really matter since people choose to believe what they want regardless of what someone claims to know. I'm not sure why anyone would get their knickers in a twist over "reputation points" on a web forum anyhow. It's not like they really mean anything. So some faceless person on the Internet likes what I had to say or not. OK, whatever... At this point, I won't +1 anything just to save myself the worry of reading another dress-down that suggests I am being a child because I used a feature on a web forum that wasn't really discussed or the purpose explained. I appreciate all the hard work that goes into this site, and I support it as a benefactor, but frankly I think some folks take these things a little too seriously and the petty comments get a bit old (I suspect this is what bkelm18 is referring to as well).
  16. I found this website through the TEOTWAWKI Blog. It has dozens of military field and training manuals for free download on just about everything you can think of. http://www.stevespages.com/page7c.htm
  17. I'm glad I saw this thread. I have been kicking around the idea of getting a 1911 and we going back and forth between Springfield and Kimber. Kimber is definitely out if I can't do basic work on it myself.
  18. I agree with RobertNashvile. There are plenty of sites with free templates and info on the web and the office supply stores even sell kits with nice paper, envelopes, and software to help write one up. The trick is to keep them concise, professional looking, and to write a good cover letter tailored for each employer.
  19. I personally would drop for the Ruger Single Six. I have one with the extra .22 mag cylinder and the thing is built like a tank.
  20. I have owned a Mini 14 and an AR. I don't own the Mini 14 any longer and kept the AR for all of the reasons discussed above. However, if you don't want to sell your rifle, there is an option. The accuracy issues are related to barrel flex due to the pencil barrel on the older Minis, which is more pronounced as the barrel heats up. One fix is to install a barrel strut like the Mo-Rod or the Accu-Strut. http://www.mo-rod.com/ http://www.accu-strut.com/
  21. People forget that the Republican Party was a "third party" that appeared in protest of the Whig Party. In two election cycles, the Whig Party was no more and the new Republican Party had elected Lincoln to the White House.
  22. Why? Would you approve of people coming to heckle you? Should they have filed trespassing complaints on anyone who hadn't purchased food during yesterday's little protest? This is the problem with our country right now. People want to ignore our constitutionally protected right to equal protection under the law and pick and choose who gets legal rights and who gets the boot of the government on their throat, not because they are actually harming you in any way, but because they are different than you.
  23. My sense is that there are three main groups in this event: 1) the anti-gay crowd, 2) the free speech crowd, and 3) those who are peeved at the response of politicians who are using their power to prevent Chick-fil-A from establishing business locations because they disagree on policy. Clearly, they are interconnected, but the anti-gay crowd appears - at least to me - to be very prominent. That may very well be the result of selective media coverage, and partially because I just can't stand Sarah Palin and she's a big "traditional marriage" advocate and she basically started this push.
