Just thought I'd mention something. The feds don't need a youth DHS army to take over the country considering there are already thousands of federal LEOs and military members who have access to all sorts of fantastic weapons and vehicles. Does FEMA have some magical power to brainwash young minds that exceeds the ability of the US military to brainwash 18-21 year olds? This is nothing more than conspiratorial hogwash. Yes, DHS bought a bunch of ammo. So what? DHS includes many more agencies than FEMA. Immigration and Customs and the Border Patrol, the US Secret Service, the US Coast Guard, the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers, and the Federal Air Marshals are all under DHS and obviously need guns and ammunition for their duties and training. Also, let me address this silly Obama Youth Brigade hand gesture thing. I have studied World War II history as an armchair historian, and genocide as an academic endeavor. Never have I seen any photo of the Hitler Youth using the hand gesture shown in the picture associated with Obama. Never. In fact, the only picture I have seen is the close-up of the hands used as a comparison. However, I can find plenty of pictures of Hitler Youth using the standard Nazi salute (which was also used by American school children to salute the American flag when the Pledge of Allegiance was introduced to American society by Francis Bellamy, a socialist). So what we have here is the absence of a single photo or propaganda poster that displays this alleged hand gesture. None. Please feel free to do your own research and try to prove me wrong, but I think you'll be hard pressed to find any photo or propaganda poster that shows this alleged hand gesture. The photo showing this alleged Hitler Youth hand gesture did appear in the Heinrich Hoffman books and and was credited as being a photo of Hitler's own hands during a speech. It can be seen about 3/4 down the page on this website that shows photos of the books' contents: <a href="http://www.germaniainternational.com/hitler23.html">http://www.germaniainternational.com/hitler23.html</a> Regardless, the comparison between this and the Obama "sign of progress" thing where the hands are supposed to make a letter O for his last name, is simply a fabrication of the conspiratorial right-wing blogosphere. It wouldn't surprise me if Glenn Beck or Alex Jones came up with it single handedly to create this very effect. In other news, do know that the Obama administration is currently training members of the Civil Air Patrol to fly black helicopters. They are starting them young too. This website shows them being trained to do tactical repelling into your home in the event of a government takeover. Video proof! <a href="http://www.gocivilairpatrol.com/cap_home/teens/">http://www.gocivilairpatrol.com/cap_home/teens/</a><br /> Also, I have just found photographic evidence to prove that Ronald Reagan was actually a communist and admirer of Muammar Gaddafi:

These replies answer my question. My impression is that these are pretty rough and don't really justify what I consider a premium price for a well-used SKS. I do have a C&R, but even then, I know I can get a nice used one for a few bucks more. I've read that some appear to have never been rebuilt, and are in as-issued condition, so who knows what they will look like or what problems they may have. I'll pass. Thanks for the info.

I'm seeing these available on the net and I'm wondering if anyone has handled one. Are they worth a darn? I have a mystery to solve.......................
East_TN_Patriot replied to Andyshowfan's topic in Long Guns
My guess is an old Mossberg that's been bubbaed up a bit or a vintage European or Asian import. Mossberg had a lot of rifles that had a squared trigger guard, but it was at the rear. It makes me wonder if someone removed the trigger guard and replaced it backwards. The seller's pics leave a lot to the imagination. That is enough to keep me from offering anything for it. -
Well I guess you guys are gonna ride me out on a rail when I say this.. and before I do I understand everyone works hard for their money and can do what they want with it. But I for one will NOT buy a firearm from wally world, nor will I buy ammo.. I support my LGS, why ??? Well when I visit I am treated like family, never spoken down to.. Always treated fairly. At wal-mart I am just another number.. Wal-mart is killing the little guys, and what are we going to do when the little guys are gone??? Do you think you will find a "Gunsmith" at wal-mart??? Nope... Like I said it is your money, do what you will.. But please stop feeding the beast..
Also, Walmart survives on corporate welfare from local governments that give them huge tax breaks and infrastructure construction that is paid for with our tax dollars and not offered to the small businesses in a community. Walmart is a beast indeed. I wonder how many people who love Walmart and their low prices harp about paying taxes. Your less expensive Ruger 10/22 is subsidized by our tax dollars. For example, one organization summarizes the issue like this:
A secret behind Wal-Mart’s rapid expansion in the United States has been its extensive use of public money. This includes more than $1.2 billion in tax breaks, free land, infrastructure assistance, low-cost financing and outright grants from state and local governments around the country. In addition, taxpayers indirectly subsidize the company by paying the healthcare costs of Wal-Mart employees who don’t receive coverage on the job and instead turn to public programs such as Medicaid. 1
Walmart is also notorious for not respecting individual property rights and using their influence to have private property seized under imminent domain. As another group notes:
[...] if the city of Denver has its way, these small businesses will be evicted to make way for a Wal-Mart super-center. The city’s Urban Renewal Authority has threatened condemnation if the property owners refuse to sell and has offered Wal-Mart $10 million in public subsidies. 2
I, for one, have no love for Walmart, I refuse to shop there, and I get quite upset when my wife shops there. 1) http://www.walmartsubsidywatch.org/index.html 2) http://reclaimdemocracy.org/independent_business_walmart_eminent_domain/

I recently took a trip to Chicago. I felt the same way. Nice city (at least the part I was in) and the people were friendly, but I couldn't stand the thought that most of the people I laid eyes on believed that the government is more trustworthy than I on issues of safety and personal liberty. Surprisingly, I only saw 3 cops my entire week there. Two bicycle cops my first evening, and one patrol on the morning of my departure, but I saw plenty of panhandlers, homeless folks, and unsavory types wandering around. Had one decided I looked like a good target, I was not in any position to protect myself beyond my Swiss Army knife, and even that was a crap shoot because the blade is right at the legal limit (Chicago even has very restrictive rules on pocket knives). What irks me more is that it wasn't even legal for me to keep the firearm secured in a locked case in my vehicle since Chicago prohibits possession of a firearm pretty much completely, so a trip to Chicago requires one to make the drive without a firearm or risk a felony charge upon arrival. Just as an aside, I remember when I entered law enforcement in 1997 and I supported the concealed carry law that was being pushed in Kentucky at the time. I was definitely a minority in policing at the time and that wasn't all that long ago. My point is that less than a generation ago, most LEOs were not supportive of one's right to carry and the major police organizations are not especially friendly to right to carry, especially the National Association of Chiefs of Police. Heck, that group even opposed the federal law granting national carry for LEOs.

I second the vote for Apex. I bought some of their used ones and they seem to be fine.

GOP leaders seek to avoid repeat of Gun law Fight
East_TN_Patriot replied to a topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
So, from what I read in that article, our elected officials don't think I am being "reasonable" because I strongly believe that I have a right to keep an item secured in my vehicle regardless of where it is parked. When the debate starts off like that, you know it's not going to bode well for gun owners. -
When a LEO handcuffs an individual "for your safety and mine" that is called an arrest. An arrest requires probable cause of a crime. I do not see probable cause of a crime here. What I see (well, hear) is an officer who does the typical illegal arrest and tries to justify it for officer safety. The officer can conduct a stop and frisk if the officer can articulate reasonable suspicion or probable cause that the individual is engaged in criminal activity and is armed. If the officer didn't see any traffic violations, then he has no lawful authority to make a stop. Regardless, once the officer found the individual had a weapon and became uncooperative, I think it would be reasonable for the officer to detain him (not arrest him) and take possession of the firearm until he can further investigate and dispel his suspicions. Frankly, the rider brought this on himself for being a jerk for no reason. He also doesn't fully understand the 4th Amendment. It does not protect us from any search and seizure; it protects us from UNREASONABLE search and seizure. This is determined through case law and interpretation of the circumstances on a case-by-case basis. Beyond the fact that he likely made an illegal initial stop, he acted professionally in my professional opinion.

Yes, and our country is constantly shifting from rural to urban. I was thinking about this last night. I am afraid we may see a point when the urban centers far outnumber the rest of the country and their ideologies dominate.
I think he's been doing a fantastic job. I'm a hard working American that believes in responsible gun rights. Not trolling, just sharing. It seems that most people who were pro Romney didn't see the fallacy in his economic policy. He Is out of touch. All of this anti obama rhetoric will subside when we see that he's been doing a fantastic job a the economy continues to recover and unemployment continues to drop
So in other words, you don't really have an answer to my earlier questions. I was asking for an honest response on WHY you think he's doing a good job and HOW you quantify that belief. You don't appear to have that info. The economy is worse now than when he took office, the national debt is higher, the deficit is higher, and job growth is at a crawl except for the government sector. He's proposed no policies to fix Social Security, Medicare, or entitlement spending. He hasn't proposed any policy to address immigration. He has yet to propose a successful policy approach to energy problems. His foreign policy ideas are primarily extensions of Bush-era policies or quite similar to Romney's. He has not redeemed the USA in the eyes of the international community, we are still engaged in armed conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. He's ignored atrocities/genocide in Darfur and Syria. He oversaw the Benghazi debacle. He oversaw the "Fast and Furious" debacle. He hasn't gotten ONE SINGLE VOTE from Republicans or Democrats in Congress for his proposed budgets nor has he been able to lead a compromise between the two parties on budget issues. He oversaw the passage of the healthcare reform act, which most Americans don't approve of, that he's exempted dozens of businesses from, and that he had to lie to sell to the American people (hence the penalty vs. tax issue). Violent crime increased last year for the first time in almost 2 decades. He's increased the use of federal authorities to raid state-sanctioned medical marijuana facilities in conflict with his campaign promises. He's appointed members of special interest groups to positions in his administration in conflict with his campaign promises. He took a meaningless stance on same-sex marriage. His own administration has the gender-based pay disparities he claims to abhor. Crime and unemployment is at extraordinary high levels within the black community. He's apparently doing such a good job that he won by a much smaller margin this year than in 2008. Please tell me one single clear achievement that demonstrates he's doing a good job.

His record is totally abysmal, he has no leadership ability whatsoever, and many of his policies matched Romney's or were extensions of Bush-era policies. I can understand why people were enthusiastic in 2008, but not this time. Please elaborate on how you can be enthusiastic about the guy after the past four years. Also, are you saying that re-implementing the "assault weapons" ban and magazine capacity restrictions is "responsible" gun policy?
Interesting... Gary Johnson's votes would have put mitt ahead of Obama in FL and OH according to politico
No. The vote difference between Obama and Romney in Florida was 47,493. Johnson received 43,615. Regardless, Johnson originally RAN AS A REPUBLICAN and was rejected by the establishment using the exact same arguments people use to justify not voting a third party candidate: he can't beat Obama. So instead, we get the Massachusettes moderate who inspired ObamaCare, passed significant gun control legislation in his state, and has charisma slightly better than McCain (who was selected by the Republican establishment using the same logic). Instead of a party of clear principles, the Republicans have become a party of appeasers with a strategy of trying to please everyone with watered down policy ideas. During the third debate, Romney demonstrated he's really quite similar to Obama on most policy issues. People were aching for something new and Romney didn't deliver. I think Rubio would have given Obama an even more impressive run for his money. I think Johnson, given a legitimate chance, would have given Obama a run for his money except that we still have far too many closet nanny-state people in the Republican Party who want to enforce religious/moral values using government power in the same way the Democratic Party wants to do on their pet issues. I have been a life-long Republican, but I have grown so disgusted with the hypocrisy and closed-mindnedness of party leadership and base that I came to realize they party left me years ago.

You can do quite a bit with Picasa from Google. It's free and does the basic stuff you need to crop and tune photos. One bit of advice, shoot the shot wide and then crop it down.

Case in point: http://townhall.com/columnists/benshapiro/2012/02/01/the_republican_party_becomes_the_whig_party/page/full/
The Republican Party is like a bed of nails. It works so long as the nails are relatively close together -- but as the nails are moved further apart, the chances of winding up spiked from head to toe grow. Right now, the nails are too far apart. The Republican Party is about to be cut to shreds, even as the establishment declares victory over those redneck insurgents from the Tea Party. Romney's victory may very well end up being pyrrhic for the GOP in the end.
I voted for Gary Johnson and I'm proud that I voted for Gary Jonson and not one of these establishment crooks in the Republican or Democratic parties. Catastrophic to you or not, it's my vote, and I vote for the person I believe in. This is yet another election year that I shake my head at people who complain about the two main parties, but scream and holler about how dumb it is to vote for an alternative party. A very quick look at history shows how the Republican Party unseated the Whigs and put Abe Lincoln in the White House in 8 years. If people want real change, they are going to have to vote for it, and not compromise on their beliefs or the issues. Either you believe in individual liberty, small federal government, and fiscal responsibility or you don't and vote Republican or Democratic.

I got mine and I don't particularly collect C&R weapons. You can get a discount with several companies like Brownells and Midway. Also, privacy is pretty much a non-issue in my book since you are posting this question on the Internet to be cached for eternity and accessible to the public and the government. You have a CCW, and I assume a Social Security card. If you buy anything from a. FFL, they have access to all of your info anyhow. There's not much more the government would be able to get from a C&R application.

To you or me, yes, but to most officers, they do view it as an officer safety issue. The police are trained to treat every person they encounter as a potential hostile threat. Academic researchers have coined this the "symbolic assailant". The officer comes to see anyone as a threat. Right or wrong, that's the perception within law enforcement.
-
As a former LEO, an officer can run serial numbers on anything as long as they are legally able to access the serial number. If you provide the firearm to the officer, it's perfectly legal for them to run it. It's much like running license plates on vehicles in traffic, or VIN numbers on cars in parking lots. I always did it, but on thinking back, I don't really know why I would run the gun serial number over any other piece of property. It's that magical power of the gun that automatically ties it to criminal behavior in our popular culture I suppose, and I have always been a pro-gun guy, even in the days when most cops were not.

Best weapon light for me
East_TN_Patriot replied to ANDERSON MEDIC's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
I appreciate it, but I don't own either one anymore. The first was a small light I bought when I started in law enforcement in 1997. I kept it for about a year, but it quit working and I didn't know any better about contacting them for warranty work. I shied away from them after that, tried a couple of MagLite flashlights that weren't much better, and finally dropped money on a Streamlight Stinger around 1999-2000 that I still own and use. I've only put one new bulb in it and two sets of batteries in all of that time. About 3 or 4 years ago I decided to try another SureFire since everyone raves about them. I bought a G2 Nitrolon and in less than 6 months of VERY light and minimal use, it went through 3 or 4 lamp assemblies (and they cost almost as much as the light did new), which leads me to believe it had a short or something. I tried multiple times to contact their customer service and never received a reply. I dug the light out a couple of years ago and tried one last time to contact them about it, but never got a reply. I threw it in the trash and have sworn them off completely. In comparison, every single time I have contacted Streamlight about their products (to inquire about specs or accessories) their customer service is stellar. -
Best weapon light for me
East_TN_Patriot replied to ANDERSON MEDIC's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
The Streamlight TLR2 is an excellent light and their customer service is exceptional, neither of which I can say for SureFire. I have owned two lights from SureFire, both were absolute junk, and I am still waiting for SureFire customer service to respond to any of my multiple emails I sent about the Nitrolon G3 that I finally threw in the garbage after over a year of waiting for SureFire to respond. I've owned a total of five Streamlight products and all have been exceptional.
