  1. TNrifleman, Do you have a pic of your setup?? I'm really interested how much clearance you have over the peep. Also, how far back you brought the scope in the rings. Ya'know center the knobs versus moving it rearward for closer eye relief. Just wondering where your sweet spot ended up being. Oh yeah... is yours an M1A and are you running a M14 extractor to clear the spent brass or just factory??
  2. Thanks!! Yea, those guys on M14TFL are full of knowledge. Truly some expert info there. I'll be posting all my results of this install... good, bad or ugly, it is what it is. Still have some parts coming in before I get to test. Lo rings, M14 extractor and a shim kit for my front band. The scope mount does not require using the shims but I'm gonna tighten it up before I go shootin. m14man, you should let us know how your ARMS install is going. Maybe we can pick up some tips from what you get working.
  3. Another good tip I learned was replacing the original big headed screw on the front of the ARMS mount. It interferes with the handgaurd. Here's the set screw replacement that works real nice. If you set yours up like mine, the handgaurd does not hit this.
  4. Learned a neat trick on the M14TFL site that I'd like to share. Way too simple but once I got the scope in, it is precise. You can get the scope positioned perfectly to know ring height and distance from the eye. My math said use the medium rings but the Bubba tape enabled getting the scope's variable ring past the peep. Low rings will fit nicely there, I hope, cause that's what I just ordered. Check it out!!
  5. You guys sure are slow to respond. Had to some figuring... Still hard to make a decision on ring height because of peep interference.

    1911 mag capacity

I believe during the stressfull situation you describe you will slam that mag in, hit the release and not even blink. You wont even think about how it feels. Just my thought.
  7. Have you guys held or shot a MWS? Interested in why you like it more than a tuned M14/M1A or DPMS. More accurate, less trouble, marketing, better feel... ???
  8. Back when I had my Dirty Harry 44 Mag we use to dance 2 liter coke bottles around from 100-125 yards. Got pretty good at it too. Nothing like 350 but I was impressed.
  9. Took my play money from the last couple of gun sells and ordered a Leupold 2.5-8x36 with M2 turrents and a Ballistic Drop Compensator in it. A lot of scope for a knock around scabbard gun like this old Scout. Will be able to use it on most any rifle so I went for it. Expecting delivery by early next week. It'd be cool if I get it for the weekend. Still up in the air over the perfect 30mm rings to strap that scope onto the ARMS 18 mount. Looks like a LOT of the internet posters are quite pleased with their ARMS #22 Throw Lever QD rings. Since this will be primarily a scope gun, I want it as low as possible. When it's scabbard time on the 4-wheeler, I can just detach the scope and hit the whoopty doos like usual. Any thoughts on ring height to clear the peep??
  10. Over the years, I have been so sick of that old gen3 M1A scope mount that I finally give it away to a bud. Now... I get to see what all the rave is about an ARMS 18 mount. All kinds of good stuff written about it holding zero forever and the fact it's got a see-thru channel to use the irons if you quick detach the scope or have peep rings. We'll know soon as I got my delivery today!! Well, I have say when you open the bag, it looks small and unimpressive. After removing the stripper guide, I placed the ARMS 18 on the M1A and was no less than impressed with how it felt, looked AND fit. "Wow" does not begin to express my feelings. I truly expected a fitting session because of several comments I read about SA receivers being not quite to GI spec. Look at it... don't you think it looks as if it belongs? I like it, so far. Here's a view of the see-thru channel. Works just fine as I'm able to clearly see the front post with no obstruction, at all. Only downer so far is my quick detach GG&G scope mount is not compatible with this mount. It will fit backwards but the disconnect lever crowds my ejection path so I gotta do something different for rings. Do any of you have a favorite QD 30mm ring?? Please sound off!! I'll be ordering something soon as I wanta see how it does with some glass on it. SmokyBaer

    Info on 1911

EXACTLY!! If you wanted to play around and learn how to build your own 1911, an Essex frame is a great starter. My first one rides an Essex frame and yes it's on the edge of the specs but it's inside the tolerances. Turned out to be a pretty accurate pistol. The kicker is it's a keeper. Resale sucks so don't buy one to make money on it. My free labor and quality parts inside that Essex was about $700 total.
  12. Also, another way to get my point across is have a look at those M1A NMs and SMs. Bedded actions and rear lugs that all require touch ups to maintain if you take it apart for cleaning ever so often. There's things moving around in a M14 platform just by design. Don't get me wrong... I love the M1A/M14 platform! Been playing with them a LONG time. In fact, the whole reason for selling off a lot of my inventory the past couple months is to build me something. I'm really considering playing with an AR .308 of such BUT my heart keeps tugging to order a 22" LRB with the extended rail and put it in a basic JAE with a barrel tensioner. Just my thoughts, for now.
  13. Wel, let me say it like this... The Super Match I had years ago was a consistant 1" grouper as long as the scope mount stayed tight. No kiddin... that was THE worst pain I had with that rifle and it eventually led me to sell it off. If i knew then what I know now, I would have kept it it forever and got a different scope mount as they were later created. This all took place in the 80s. All my other M1As were a LOT lighter than the Super and some shot almost as well. If they had JAE stocks available years ago, I would probly not have experimented with other platforms like the FNAR that somehow just slaps into a plastic stock and shoots dimes at the same 100 yards. It ain't as cool tho.
  14. Not on your list but I tried a FNAR .308heavy barrel this last time around and have been thoroughly impressed with it's accuracy. Good ammo on a good eye day and I'm easily 3/4" or better at 100 yards. Mags ain't cheap. Winchester brought out a sister in camo. Still have one M1A left and love it for it's reliability and coolness. Accuracy is not built into M1A/M14s... it's worked into them. GI parts with no tweaking can turn out 2" groups regularly. Bedding, shiming and a GOOD scope mount can dial in 1moa sometimes better. For rugged use on a horse or 4 wheeler scabbard, it's hard to beat a tuned Scout. FALs i had were heavy and not so accurate. Cool pieces of reliability tho. DPMS might be my next experiment. Never had one but been told they are accurate out of the box like the FNAR. Prices appear to be coming down too.
  15. Can't believe all that work dialing it in and gonna sell the whole cherry rig... ain't right. Especially, when I ain't in a position to help you "liberate" that fine specimen of a m14.
  16. Agreed, the sticker prices are high at the Outpost BUT with just a little haggling I was able to get within 50 bucks of internet prices on two different deals. With results like that, I have no complaints. Never hurts to do homework, ask and make offers.
  17. Hey MAN... ain't fair!! All i got was a codboad box with mine!! Love them Baers tho. Nice piece Kano...
  18. #4 - If you have some cool Punisher grips, you MUST get a new home for them.
  19. Congrats on your new piece!! The Wilson trigger and action will keep getting smoother as it breaks in. You will admire it more and more. For me, my pistol trading has almost come to a halt since getting my Les Baer and Wilson 45s. Between the two, I have not wanted for anything else. Strange feeling after 30 years of trading.
  20. Has taken some 30 years to accumulate what I should have started with but they didn't make next level Baers and Wilsons back then. Sure am glad they do now. Read one of the post asking if a Wilson is worth the extra cash. Well, for me, once I shot one I could not believe it. The Les Baer Premier II done me the same way. If you pursue tight groups at the range (like me) or you want to dance cans at long range in the backyard (like me), you might just sell 3 pistols to buy one (like I did). It's worth it.
  21. Just to let you know... I do not know this guy BUT he must be having to sacrifice to let go those Wilsons for that kinda price. That Colt aint bad either. AAAND a Desert Eagle .357!!!! Couldn't stand it, Had to share... http://thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=415183 If you hook up with him and do a deal on that 357, I wanna shoot it... k?
  22. That is one Honkin' BIG barrel on that stick... Bet she groups!!
  23. Been reading LOTS of great things on the POF piston design... Anxious for a range report!!
  24. Never heard of it... but i like it!!
