  1. I guess this would be another pro/con depending on how you look at things. Both finishes are very thin, however thick enough to get the job done over time. With that the Duracoat is an epoxy based paint which I've been told kind of gives a firearm a certain plastic look to it. I tried to achieve this for S&G on my AR, short of it having the blaze orange tip it looks like a plastic airsoft gun. The cerakote allows for the metal characteristics to come out, downside any imperfections in the metal will also come out. Rightwinger saw that on the back part of the slide...and BTW it bothered me enough to the point I went home and stripped it back down and re-did it so those minor blemishes he saw are gone now. I wasn't sure what they were but they were gone after an thorough sand blasting. Duracoat Pro: Clean smooth finish Con: Can look like a toy Cerakote Pro: Smooth clean finish Con: Blemishes can possibly be noticable through the finish
  2. Well I've been applying Duracoat for a few years now and my biggest complaint about it is the cure time. I usually give myself at a minimum 2 weeks before I even touch it or start to think about assembling it. As for durability, My XD 45 has been numerous camo patterns and two-tone combinations over the last few years and the slide has remained black now for about a year and a half. I've got about 4-5k down the pipe and about 2500 with the slide in it's current state. The only problem I've had with the finish was when I decided to be smart and lock it down in the vise to remove the rear sight without any kind of buffer. Needless to say it got a little banged up, but as many of you who have tried when it comes to taking off the sight on an XD the rule "get a bigger hammer" truely applies. I just did my first slide with oven cured Cerakote. I did as per manufacturers instructions for baking metal. The guy I got the Sig from decided to try and duracoat it without doing any of the prep work. So I decided to give Cerakote a try. First off I haven't been able to run it through it's paces for durability tests, however I've got a gunsmith rubber mat that I do some of my work on instead of maring up my wood work bench. With that rubber mat down I was able to pull the slide out of the oven (after cool down) and put back in the double roll pin punch without doing a single thing to the slide. I was able to put back on the front and rear sights with some minor brass marks near the front sight due to me being a butterfinger. So far I've went from a junked up slide to a near perfect slide now and I think that it matches the frame better than the original slide. Since I have two slides for my P226 I'll give you a little comparison at the bottom of the thread. Duracoat Pros: Number of colors (201) Ease of application Proven durability Cost (4 oz after shipping: $30) Cons: Cure time (3-4 weeks) Cerakote Pros: Cure time (2 hours) Durability Ease of application Cons: Lack of color choices (32) Cost (4 oz with shipping: $44) More to follow with this subject when I do a little more and run the peices through a "test". Biggest thing that I've seen with aftermarket spray finishes is the prep work, quality prep work makes for a durable and long lasting finish. Here are the Sig pics I promised. Cerakote: Factory:
  3. Is it going to be better than the last few? At $10 for admission I haven't been impressed by what I've seen the last few I've went to.
  4. I saw a used P220 for I think $475 along the far right wall. It didn't look like it came with anything just the mag that was in it and the gun. I didn't have any luck there, a lot to look at but nothing that I was looking for, atleast not for the price I was looking for it at.
  5. I'll hopefully be there, just looking though. I already bought a few toys over the last few months. I'm bringing the wife so I guess I better start getting her ready so I can make it there by atleast 1.
  6. I've ran a lot of slings over the last few years. I've tried the standard 3 point Mamba style with the elastic give in it, it was nice but the strap that ran along the side of the M4 sometimes blocked the bolt catch. I went to a single point sling on a Blackhawk Universal Ambi end plate. It had its perks and drawbacks, It was nice for range work and could lace it through my shoulder straps on the armor to give it a central location. Rappelling, jumping off things it tended to want to "lawn dart" and when I would transition from primary to secondary it would sometimes swing back around to center or just get in the way while moving and shooting with the secondary. The best I've found so far has been a Vickers 2 point sling, it has a nice friction strap that is easily tightened when climbing ladders, jumping off things, rappelling as well as when running with the secondary in hand. I agree with David though the padded ones just tend to be in the way and give a larger surface on the strap to get snagged on kit. Best thing to do is get a few styles and try them for your application or find someone that has a few of them and borrow them to save some money and still give you the ability to see which one works best for you. Personal preference is everything.
  7. I love my Brownells account, I just picked up an extended slide catch, 2 more compact mags and a mag well attachment, more pictures to come with the new goodies. Range Report: The Sig fires like it did the first 600 rounds I put through it while I was in Ohio visiting family. The V-10 was great, my wife thought it had less kick than my full size XD....haha little did she know. The first shot was a suprise to her, although she didn't have a real good grip until after that first shot. The porting is cool, I have some video but have no idea how to upload it. It's a little rough shooting with only 1 magazine of 6 rounds, more are on the way. Trigger squeeze is crisp and smooth, sights are nice, over all feel is good despite the compact size and me having large hands. It held nice groups at 7 meters, my only complaint is the round capacity, but I am comparing it to an XD.
  8. I ended 2010 by getting a Sig P226 with some extras. I started 2011 off with a bang by getting a Springfield Ultra Compact V-10. Mods to come later on the Springfield. Here's the gun pron...
  9. You mean to tell me that I'm the only one that's going to have a Husqvarna Mossberg 500? Nothing beats a grey and orange shotgun that shows tribute to a great chainsaw....I think i would have to stop and laugh if I saw someone at the range with one of those. Then I'd pull out mine and show him how a real man handles a shotgun.
  10. Hey Guntroll, I got a .30 cal carbine stuck in my Hamilton Model 27 today, I'm going to bring it to you to fix it. Just kidding, don't people know to look at the firearm they are about to use before they go shoving ammo in it?
  11. Well title is supposed to say Chris Reeve's Knifes....hit the wrong button. I've had this knife now for about 4 years. My dad made a nice display for it. I was wondering if anyone else had any Chris Reeve's knives? This is mine:

    Gun apps

Not to hijack this but does anyone know about good firearm apps for a Blackberry Storm 2?
  13. I got myself an old (new to me) Sig P226, the wife and I got a handful of gift cards (which she has in her purse somewhere) and my parents got me a new Craftsman belt driven garage doog opener. They said the one I have is too noisy and it annoys my mom when she's down visiting.
  14. This one reminds me of the Mad Max semi...only updated. Better yet, I'll take this (Maximum Overdrive):
  15. Sig P226:
  16. I've been thinking about getting a Traxxas Trophy Truck, forget the exact model, for my daughter and I to mess around with...I need to stop buying guns first.
  17. I'll be waiting for that to come out. I dig the graphics, I may need to do some upgrades to my computer to run it though. With it though for those totally realistic graphics. Hopefully it will be set up to do a lot of mods to all the weapons.
  18. Just hop on I-75N and head to Cincinnati, that's where I keep getting these from, I got my .30 cal Blackhawk for around $400 last time I was up here.
  19. Well I broke down and got a Sig P226 9mm, German made, and it wasn't even a Christmas present. I'm pretty impressed with it so far. I'm taking it out to run it through it's paces tomorrow morning. It came with a second slide...9mm as well again German. Once I'm back in TN that will probably be on the Trading Post. It has all the original paperwork with it. The matching slide is from 98 and the extra is from 95 according to the letter stamps. With the addition of 4 magazines it was a steal of a deal. With wood Nill grips, tricked trigger, Sprinco recoil reducer op rod and night sights. I seem to get a new gun every time I come to Ohio...the 5 hour drive might be worth it.
  20. Very nice looking. If he doesn't like it you know how to get ahold of me.
  21. Those goofy looking things cost almost as much as the Glaser ammo I have. Looks like I'll have to get some and throw it in the mix of Glaser safety-plug and PowRball, snake shot, Golden sabre and hydrashot I have laying around.
  22. You guys don't do this to all your HPs? Geeze I thought everyone would know that if you spike the tip of the round you're going to get better penetration. I guess I'm just a little ahead of my time. Good luck with that one, I have no answer for you. In many of my bored searches for "exotic" ammo I've never seen anything like that, I have seen a ballistic tipped 12 gauge though.
  23. I'd go Mod 1, I like the low-pro gas block and rifle length rail and you stick a Noveske firepig on the end and that's just got BA all over it.
  24. I've got PC, I can't work a controller on any system except a Wii. I guess I missed that gene the rest of my generation seems to have, that or I spent more time outside than most of society. The 8/9th would work best for me and the rest of the PC gamers out there. I have family down around the 1st and a new garage door opener to install.
  25. I wish it were a few days later I'll be in Ohio...damn family. I'd be up for it if I were in town.
